Abstract:
The field of positive psychology and psychiatry has the goal of helping people to achieve greater happiness, fostering the factors that allow individuals, communities, and societies to thrive. It proposes a hierarchy of positive psychological character strengths, composed of 24 specific human qualities, including spirituality. Spiritually oriented well-being therapies are a promising and much-needed field. The bio-psycho-social model, developed by Cloninger and colleagues, is an empirically based model that considers the importance of spirituality in the human constitution and development, providing a systematic way to promote health as an integrated state, rather than merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Personality development depends on the creative process of integration through three complex adaptive systems of learning and memory, involving associative conditioning of habits, intentional self-control, and creative processes of self-awareness. The physical, mental, and spiritual aspects are interdependent, and must be addressed jointly aiming at a healthy, happy, and good life.

Abstract:
Arguably, the most important difference between machines and humans is that humans have feelings. For several decades researchers have been trying to create methods to simulate sentimentality for machines, and currently Sentiment Analysis is the hottest, most demanding, and rapidly growing task in the language processing field. Sentiment analysis or opinion mining refers to the application of Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics, and text analytics to identify and extract sentimental (opinionated, emotional) information in a text. The basic task in sentiment analysis is to classify the polarity of a given text at the document, sentence, or feature/aspect level, that is, to decide whether the expressed sentiment in a document, a sentence, or a feature/aspect is positive (happy), negative (sad), neutral (memorable), and so forth. In this chapter, the authors discuss various challenges and solution strategies for Sentiment Analysis with a particular view to texts in Bangla (Bengali).

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter aims to provide a tentative answer to the question of whether party members are at all capable of engaging in non-coercive dialogical exchanges of arguments that result in concrete political proposals, let alone sustained critiques of some existing proposal. It looks specifically at the ‘circumstances of deliberation’ at the party base, asking whether the local partisan associations in which party members engage provide the conditions that are necessary for reasonably non-coercive and dialogical deliberation to arise, namely that participants have equal opportunities to influence the deliberative process, and that they hold a variety of different viewpoints that ensure that the issue under deliberation is considered from multiple angles. The chapter argues that these desiderata are indeed satisfied, showing that diversity is ensured by members’ different occupational backgrounds, and that partisans’ joint commitment to shared political ideals establishes an egalitarian ‘deliberative field’ in which everyone’s voice is heard. These are, it is suggested, very favourable conditions for deliberation, even if one applies much higher normative standards than the book does. Interestingly, the fact that partisanship involves having common adversaries—a by-product of having shared normative commitments—also contributes to the equal standing branch members enjoy; so, partisanship’s inherent exclusionary dynamics have the happy effect of rendering branches supportive environments for deliberation.

This chapter continues the discussion of Ernst Kantorowicz's life in Berkeley. Despite the five and a half years of uncertainty about his employment in Berkeley and concurrent dismaying news from Europe, on the whole, Kantorowicz was happy. Contributing to this was the arrival of three German émigrés in Berkeley in successive years: Walter Horn, Manfred Bukofzer, and Leonardo Olschki. Horn, Bukofzer, and Olschki, all with Heidelberg credentials, spoke Kantorowicz's language in both senses of the expression. Horn, born in 1908, studied in Heidelberg before gaining a doctorate in art history in Hamburg under the direction of Erwin Panofsky. Musicologist Bukofzer, born in 1910, studied in Heidelberg and Basel, where he received his doctorate after the Nazi takeover. Olschki, an expert on the medieval literature of Italy, was the one with whom Kantorowicz was closest.

The collective effervescence evoked during the worship service is intensified by the fact that there are thousands of people contributing to it. Megachurch services are fields of wonder that energize and synchronize human bodies and feelings with remarkable acuity. Abstract:
Consider this passage from a letter written by Robert H. Weitbrecht, a physicist who was born deaf and went on to change the lives of deaf people throughout the world: . . . Perhaps I was more fortunate than the average deaf child. My family had upheavals during my teens—my father passed away and we had difficult circumstances. My mother had faith in me and saw to it that I was given the best possible chance during these times. (Weitbrecht to Srnka, 1966) . . . As a young boy, Weitbrecht had difficulties learning to speak. His parents and teachers were not sure about his potential to acquire a normal education. Weitbrecht was teased by his peers because of his deafness. He did not have very positive self-esteem, and he was not happy in school. Despite the doubts and challenges, he went on to earn several academic degrees. In 1964, Weitbrecht developed a modem (“acoustic coupler”) which enabled deaf people to use the telephone via a teletypewriter (TTY). Weitbrecht’s modem was a major breakthrough in the lives of deaf and hard-of-hearing people, who had waited more than 90 years since the invention of the voice telephone by Alexander Graham Bell. It brought to them both access and independence with regard to long-distance communication. Weitbrecht’s story is one of a young deaf child with questionable abilities who went on to be successful in his chosen field. It is also a story that has often been repeated (Lang & Meath-Lang, 1995). Despite all of the hurdles which have threatened to thwart their progress, deaf people have found ways to go over, under, and around the barriers of attitude and access to distinguish themselves in many fields of endeavor. Imagine how much more they could do if society did not make it so hard for them. This book is about learning, teaching, and the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, but it is not intended solely for those who make their living by teaching. Rather, it is intended for parents, service providers, policymakers, and lay readers as well as teachers—anyone interested in the education of deaf children, whether or not they have a formal educational role.
