Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis was written for a Swedish valve manufacturer to find out in what temperature regimes it was possible to replace electroplated hard chromium with autocatalytic electroless nickel-phosphorus. In this work the dry sliding wear properties of electroplated hard chromium and autocatalytic electroless nickel-phosphorus(10% P) were compared. All tests and investigations were done by using available equipment at Karlstads University. The tests were made to find out how the wear of these coatings behaved at different temperatures, how different substrates influence the wear of these coatings

Physical vapor deposited hard coatings comprised of cubic (c) transition metal (TM)-Al-N, and (TM)-Si-N are the current work horse materials for a large number of metal cutting and wear resistant applicatíons to light against the extreme conditions of temperature and stress simultaneously. In spite of a high degree of sophisticatíon in terms of material choice and microstructural design, a lower fracture resistance and limited thermal stability of the coatings remains a technological challenge in the field. The lower fracture resistance ofthe coating is an inherent material property. Limited

100
In last two decades, extensive studies have been dedicated in establishing a standard method on toughness measurement for thin film materials. However, there has no standard methodology or test procedure up to now. Stress based or energy based methods have been proposed on this subject, where the externally applying stress is usually required, and therefore special substrate geometry is designed, or micro-scaled strain gauge or atomically sharp cracks need to be fabricated. In addition, the stress distribution in the specimen should be monitored during the me
