Scaling and corrosion associated with the use of natural hard water in cooling towers during recirculation pose great problems from both economical and technical points of view, such as decreased system efficiency and increased frequency of chemical cleaning. Treated municipal wastewater (MWW) is a promising alternative to freshwater as power plant cooling system makeup water, especially in arid regions. In this work, hybrid systems of salt precipitation (SP), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) were investigated, as potential pretreatment processes for wastewater reuse as cooling wat

Mobile satellite communication systems play an important role in space information networks. They mostly operate at the L or S band and have multiple beams efficiently reusing the limited spectrum. Advanced technologies, such as beamforming, are used to generate numerous beams through multiple feeders, and each beam’s power allocation is correlated and constrained. Frequency reuse among multiple beams results in co-channel interference issue, which makes bandwidth allocation among multiple beams coupled. On the other hand, hybrid frequency reuse can be adopted in cellular system to improve the cellular capacity. The increasing consumption of drinking water puts a heavy burden on our future water resources. Therefore the reuse of rain water in households can be a good option to tackle this problem. On the other hand the rapidly drained rain water leads to problems in the combined sewer systems and watercourses. If the storage in the rain water tanks can be used to flatten the rain water runoff, rain water tanks can have an additional benefit. The effect of rain water tanks on the combined sewer overflow (CSO) emissions is therefore investigated with a reservoir model. Compared with storage in the combi

Abstract The study aimed to reduce the storage time of urine treatment and assess the quality of treated urine following the Solar DISinfection (SODIS) method. Microbiological analyses were performed on urine samples taken before each sunlight exposure, between 10am and 4pm at a frequency of 1 h, during which temperature was measured in PET bottles (1.5 L). The initial concentrations of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella in unstored urine were 106 and 103 CFU/100 mL respectively. The combined effect of temperature and UV radiation increased inactivation efficiency of E. coli at 5 log un

AbstractFourteenth–fifteenth century food refuse from the kitchen of the Esztergom archbishopric shows a significant diachronic increase in cyprinid bones, in particular those of carp. Contemporaneous account books indirectly suggest that the archbishop’s kitchen must have increasingly relied on farmed carp fish. Sturgeons were a commodity sold by the archbishopric but rarely consumed. Expensive pikes were bought at low prices for the archbishop, possibly related to the small size of

Abstract Background The Hajj is one of the world’s largest pilgrimage and gathers millions of Muslims from different nationalities every year. Communicable diseases have been reported frequently, during and following the Hajj, and these have been linked to individual behavioural measures. This study aimed to measure the effect of personal preventive measures, such as face mask use, hand hygiene and others, adopted by pilgrims in reducing the acquisition of infectious diseases. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Hajj terminal in King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, S

Abstract:
South Africa has both a shortage and an urgent need for qualified people with technical and mechanical skills. In order to meet this need, the teaching of technical subjects at public schools should be promoted and improved. A key aspect of teaching technical subjects in schools is to ensure the safety of all learners in technical workshops. The theory of Geborgenheit (safety, wellness, wellbeing) in education entails the notion that effective teaching and learning is enhanced if the places of learning are safe and secure. School workshops should be secure and safe spaces for learners in order
