Abstract:
Calculation of steel-concrete beams is performed with a rigid connection between concrete and a steel strip. This is possible if one installs hard stops that prevent the displacement of the strip with respect to concrete. The force acting on the stop, the number of hard stops and their pitch, are determined through the rotation angles between two adjacent stops. To determine the efforts that act on hard stops, as well as a step, one must first find a rotation angle between two cross-sections within the beams. The rotation angles of cross-sections are derived using a graph-analytical method. Ca

Because more and more young people are constantly presented with the opportunity to access information and connect to others via their smartphones, they report to be in a state of permanent alertness. In the current study, we define such a state as smartphone vigilance, an awareness that one can always get connected to others in combination with a permanent readiness to respond to incoming smartphone notifications. We hypothesized that constantly resisting the urge to interact with their phones draws on response inhibition, and hence interferes with students’ ability to inhibit prepo

Abstract:
For origami-based designs to be functional, they need to be stable. Typically, stability is achieved through the introduction of exterior supports or members. This work focuses on incorporating stability into deployable origami-based engineering applications, including the development of deployable stiffeners or hard stops and generating concepts for stable origami-based systems in specific applications. Two types of deployable stiffeners are developed. Models for transcrease hard stops are presented, which can be directly implemented into origami-patterns to block motion at a specified angle.

The purpose of this research program was to determine the requirement to stop active pitting and compare that to the requirement to stop general corrosion and prevent pit initiation. This report examines the cathodic protection requirement to stop active pitting in buried natural gas transmission lines and compare it to the cathodic protection requirement to stop general corrosion and further prevent pit initiation. During the two-year period of this research program, two different pit geometries were examined: (1) a small diameter pit of 10 mils in diameter and approximately 10 mils deep whic

Abstract:
This tutorial is about building up a COMSOL model for a robot ant. In this model, we have a robot with a size of a few centimeters and which is based on piezoelectric ceramics. This robot has already been built by the University of Michigan and some COMSOL models only for the legs’ operation are already existing and are published. From what we know, the full ant robot had not been computationally simulated before. Here, we provide a tutorial on how to successfully achieve this task. Furthermore, we uploaded a video on YouTube to visualize the results: https://youtu.be/ePyD8TAQt3I

Abstract:
Financial contagion and Sudden Stops of capital inflows experienced in emerging-markets crises may originate in an explosive mix of lack of policy credibility and world capital market imperfections that afflict emerging economies with national currencies. Hence, this paper argues that abandoning national currencies to adopt a hard currency can significantly reduce the emerging countries' vulnerability to these crises. The credibility of their financial policies would be greatly enhanced by the implicit subordination to the policymaking institutions of the hard currency issuer. Their access to

Abstract:
We propose algorithms for conducting Bayesian inference in structural vector autoregressions identified using sign restrictions. The key feature of our approach is a sampling step based on 'soft' sign restrictions. This step draws from a target density that smoothly penalises parameter values violating the restrictions, facilitating the use of computationally efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithms. An importance-sampling step yields draws from the desired distribution conditional on the 'hard' sign restrictions. Relative to standard accept-reject sampling, the method substantia

Abstract:

Abstract:
External capital accounts suffered during the COVID-19 crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean, but perhaps surprisingly the impacts were less severe than in previous crises. Gross capital inflows offset the outflows of residents, in sharp contrast to the global financial crisis of 2008/09 when residents repatriation of capital countered withdrawals from non-residents. In general, the result was relatively stable net capital inflows and modest current account adjustments. Still, some countries that had seen inflows fall prior to the crisis, reflecting weaker fundamentals, suffered Sudden Sto

Abstract:
This study has involved interviews with a randomly selected sample of 389 family planning (FP) acceptors from 20 barangays in Bukidnon province, Philippines. Respondents were currently married women who had either continued to use family planning (FP) since their initial acceptance (current users) or who had stopped using FP altogether (dropouts). Findings from the present study are expected to shed light on several aspects of the dropout problem, namely: How extensive is this problem and how accurate are the DOH records in this regard? How do FP acceptors view their local FP clinic and the se
