Simasiku, Frederick. "An investigation of how enquiry-based fieldwork develops action competence in Grade 12 Geography: a Namibian case study." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003511.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of the study was twofold: firstly to investigate and describe how senior secondary school geography teachers were implementing enquiry-based learning through fieldwork. Secondly, to investigate and document how enquiry-based learning through fieldwork facilitated the development of action competence amongst learners in a geography classroom. In order to address the first goal, a survey questionnaire was utilised to generate descriptive data from a sample of seven geography teachers in the Hardap region of Namibia. Although teachers engaged learners with enquiry-based fieldwork learning activities it is suggested, based on the findings of data of this goal, that teachers face severe limitations in terms of integrating environmental learning into the geography curriculum. The main limitations of the teachers include: limited practical knowledge of and training in how to teach fieldwork skills; a lack of teaching resource materials; time constraints; heavy personal loads; and lack of school support for environmental education. In addressing the second goal an enquiry-based fieldwork learning unit was planned and implemented in the researcher’s classroom. Observation, focus group interviews, and audio records of learning interactions, were used as data generation methods for this cycle of the study. An indicator framework for identifying action competence in learners was constructed as a data analysis tool. In terms of the findings of goal two it is evident that enquiry-based learning through fieldwork facilitated the development of action competence amongst learners. Six overarching benefits of this type of learning were identified in this study, namely: - It empowered learners to develop contextual knowledge and understanding of issues that they investigated. - It facilitated commitment thus motivated learners to take indirect action. - It promoted social interaction and group cohesion amongst learners thus enhanced their decision-making ability for problem-solving and action taking. - It elicited emotional responses and a greater understanding of learners’ own and others’ attitudes and values towards issues. - It fostered critical thinking thus permitted learners to envisage a future based on their learning experiences. - It enabled learners to plan and take indirect action during the learning process. Based on the research findings, some lessons learned are presented in an attempt to contribute to the effective implementation of enquiry-based fieldwork at the classroom level.

Ramoejane, Mpho. "The genetic integrity of Labeo capensis and L. umbratus (Cyprinidae) in South Africa in relation to inter-basin water transfer schemes." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013049.

Full text
Abstract:
The Orange-Fish and Cookhouse tunnels that are part of a major inter-basin water transfer scheme (IBT) act as a pathway for several fish species from the Orange River system to enter the Great Fish and Sundays River systems in South Africa. These include Labeo capensis and L. umbratus. Labeo capensis was restricted to the Orange River system before the inter-basin water transfer scheme. Labeo umbratus occurred naturally in the Orange River and in southern flowing river systems. Previous studies showed that the two species hybridise in Hardap Dam, located in a tributary of the Orange River system in Namibia. There are also unconfirmed reports of hybrids from Darlington Dam on the Sundays River system. The aim of the thesis was to confirm hybridisation in Hardap Dam, assess whether hybridisation between L. capensis and L. umbratus has occurred in Darlington Dam and to gain a better understanding of the diversity of these two species. Morphology (morphometrics and meristics), a nuclear S7 intron and the mitochondrial cytochrome ♭ gene were used to assess for hybridisation. A total of 275 specimens were analysed from across the geographical range of the two species. The two species could be distinguished using morphometrics (dorsal fin base, interorbital width and operculum to eye distance) and meristics (lateral line, origin of the dorsal fin to lateral line, origin of the pelvic fin to lateral line and caudal peduncle scale counts) characters. Hybrids from Hardap and Darlington dams were placed between the two species clusters. Labeo umbratus from the Orange River and southern flowing rivers formed a single cluster. The two species could also be distinguished from each other with six nuclear DNA mutations and hybrids were heterozygous at such sites in both dams. Labeo umbratus populations from the Orange River and southern flowing rivers (Gouritz, Gamtoos, Sundays, Bushmans, Great Fish and Nahoon) formed a single lineage. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA, however, revealed that L. umbratus populations from the Orange River and southern flowing rivers were two lineages that differ from each other by 5 mutations. Labeo capensis could be differentiated from both these lineages. Being maternally inherited, mitochondrial DNA did not reveal hybridisation, but ten specimens with L. capensis haplotypes were found in the Darlington Dam. In Hardap Dam, however, it appears that only L. capensis mitochondrial DNA haplotypes persist, despite morphological and nuclear DNA analysis suggesting that both morphs and hybrids of the two species occur. The genetic integrity of these Labeo species has therefore been compromised in at least Hardap and Darlington dams. The Great Fish and Sundays populations are considered to be under threat of complete introgression. The Kat River and Slagboom Dam populations that were isolated before the IBTs have to remain isolated to protect the genetic integrity of the southern lineage of L. umbratus in these two systems.

Abstract:

By the emergence of the Internet of Things as a physical extension of the network, characterized by the interconnection of intelligent, autonomous and sentient objects, man has lost the position of absolute master in those interrelations to be another actor in the theater of the intricate transformations that take place, evincing the need to rethink the ontological status of both human and technical beings. In the scope of Speculative Realism, the proposal of an Object Oriented Ontology by Graham Harman arose, claiming an ontology which does not depart from pre-established hierarchies between different types of beings. However, despite the undeniable value of the contributions that this movement has made, such as the intense questioning of the subject-object relationship, the importance given to the relation and the disregard of representational issues stricto sensu, such contributions do not seem to suffice for building a philosophy on a truly realistic ground. In this context, it is raised the question about the possibility of the existence of a common denominator between human beings and technical entities, which would be capable of grounding a realistic ontology devoid of pre-established hierarchies. In the present study, it is hypothesized that this gap can be fulfilled by the ontologies elaborated in the works of Gilbert Simondon and Charles Sanders Peirce, authors whose philosophies stand out for metaphysics of an eminently logic and scientific nature, but which do not yet appear in the theoretical framework of contemporary realism in a significant manner, pointing to the relevance of this research. The results of this hypothetical-deductive research are expected to lead to the scientificmetaphysical foundation of a renewed ontological perspective, capable of addressing the consequences of the coexistence between humans and technical beings, as a result of the emerging intelligence technologies, on a realistic and non-hierarchical basis

Fretwell, Daniel. "Level p paramodular congruences of Harder type." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9683/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we will produce and investigate certain congruences, as predicted by Harder, between Hecke eigenvalues of Siegel and elliptic modular forms. Such congruences form a natural generalisation of the famous 691 congruence of Ramanujan. In direct comparison the moduli of our congruences will come from critical values of L-functions of elliptic modular forms. In particular we will be interested in congruences between level p paramodular Siegel forms and Gamma0(p) elliptic forms. Evidence for such congruences in these cases is rare (the only known examples being of level 2, due to Bergstrom et al). In order to simplify matters on the Siegel side we move into spaces of algebraic modular forms for the group GU2(D) for a quaternion algebra D/Q ramified at p,∞. Here we can use a web of conjectures and results due to Ibukiyama along with trace formulae of Dummigan to produce Hecke eigenvalues of level p paramodular forms (allowing the congruences to be tested with ease). I provide new algorithms for finding explicit descriptions of these spaces of algebraic forms. In order to provide justification for the paramodular nature of the congruence we will also consider the interplay between associated Galois representations and automorphic representations.

Krishnamurthy, M. "Harda Mandi : experiencing change in an agricultural market in central India (1980-2010)." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1333230/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mandis or primary agricultural markets are old and ubiquitous institutions across many parts of the Indian economic landscape. Wherever they have formed, they tend to be dense sites of economic and political activity, connecting town and countryside, and local agricultural markets with larger circuits of commerce and consumption. Mandis are the most important site for the regulation of the critical "first transaction" between farmers and the buyers of their produce, vital points of interaction in complex and intricately intermediated markets for a range of agricultural commodities. Widely portrayed and perceived as entrenched, inefficient and unchanging, the last decade has seen growing calls for the dismantling of the mandi system as the key to the liberalisation and growth of Indian agriculture. Drawing on eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork, this thesis centres on the everyday life, life histories, and relationships of Harda mandi, an agricultural market in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It discovers a dynamic marketplace, constantly interacting with the changing contexts of agricultural production, regional political dynamics, technological developments, processes of reform, and the penetration and contraction of different forms of agro-commercial capital. Part One follows the mandi as a shifting site of regulation over the three decades from 1980 to 2010, as major state-led interventions in agricultural production and marketing interact with local agrarian contexts and political dynamics, producing a range of effects on the mandi, its spatial dimensions, material composition, forms of intermediation, and social relations. Part Two immerses itself in the seasonal dynamics of two contrasting commodity markets – soybean and wheat – analysing the diverse and differential effects on mandi actors, processes, and market management, as global movements and domestic policies are experienced in the market yard. Stepping back, it then traces critical transitions in mandi trade over the last twenty years, describing the dominance and decline of different transactional forms, their economic consequences, and the ethical questions that they raise for local actors and more distant policymakers.

Abstract:
Bovine leptospirosis is an endemic disease in bovine Brazilian herds, and the cattle are considered the serovar Hardjo maintenance hosts and the clinical manifestations in this species are related to decreased reproductive performance. This serovar has two genotypes: Hardjobovis and Hardjoprajitno. The genotype Hardjobovis belongs to the specie Leptospira borgpetersenii and Hardjoprajitno genotype to the specie Leptospira interrogans. Although both cause reproductive failure in cattle herds around the world, there are epidemiological differences between them. The infection caused by Hardjobovis genotype is characterized by subclinical form, especially causing abortion; while Hardjoprajitno genotype, is more pathogenic causing reproductive problems and also decreased milk production. Although not correspond with the serological classification, currently the best diagnostic methods for leptospirosis are those using molecular tools. The bacterial isolation, the correct characterization and genetic identification are important for understanding the etiology, epidemiology and pathogenesis of the different specie and genotype of Leptospira. The objective of this study was to isolate and identify molecular characteristics through Multilocus variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) and sequencing of the sec Y partial gene of two isolated strains of Leptospira in urine samples from bovine naturally infected of dairy herds. Fifteen dairy cows reagents in the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) with titles between 100 and 800 for the serovar Hardjo and history of reproductive failure were selected, such as abortion and infertility. The urine samples obtained from each animal were immediately seeded in tubes containing culture medium Ellinghausen-McCullough-Johnson-Harris (EMJH). The identification of the isolates was performed by Multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) technique and phylogenetic analysis of partial sequence of gene sec Y. From the 15 urine samples evaluated, two leptospiras were isolated and named Londrina 49 and Londrina 54 strains. The MLVA profile and partial sequencing of gene sec Y characterized the isolates as L. borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo genotype Hardjobovis differing them from Hardjoprajitno reference strain. Therefore, more studies are needed including isolation and molecular characterization from regional strains to obtain a better knowledge about epidemiology of serovar Hardjo in bovine which may assist in future strategies of prevention and control of bovine leptospirosis.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The cross-immunity between Leptospira hardjo and L. wolffi was experimentally evaluated in four groups of adult healthy golden hamsters. Each animal in groups I and ll were vaccinated. respectively with hardjo and wolffi. 18 days alter the vaccination, All the animals, except those in the negative control group, received a challenge dose of a virulent sample of hardjo. This sample was 100 X (times) greater than the infectious dose (ID 50) of hardjo previously activated through serial passages in hamsters. The achieved protection was evaluated by the direct finding of leptospiras (slides silver stained: Warthin-Starry and cultures of macerated organs in Fletcher and in modificated EMJH media). Clinical signs and histological lesions in liver, kidney and lungs HE stained slides were also analysed to detect the presence of leptospiras. The sera titres ofthe hamsters was tested by fast microaglutination in plates. The results strongly suggested that the vaccination of the animals either with hardjo or wolffi developed immunity against the harzyo strain.

Elstein, Daniel Yuri. "Prescriptions and universalizability : a defence of Harean ethical theory." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2014. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/261008.

Full text
Abstract:
R.M. Hare had an ambitious scheme of providing a unified account of meta-ethics and normative ethics by combining expressivism with Kantianism and utilitarianism. The project of this thesis is to defend Hare’s theory in its most ambitious form. This means not just showing how the expressivist, Kantian and utilitarian elements are consistent, or that the three are each correct, but also that they are interdependent. The only defensible form of expressivism is Kantian; the only defensible Kantian theory is both expressivist and utilitarian; the only defensible utilitarianism is Kantian. The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 aims to show how expressivism can provide a coherent account of moral judgement and discourse. The argument for expressivism draws on Hare’s thought that the main error of moral realism is to think of moral objectivity as requiring objects, moral properties which are really there in the world. It is shown, using an argument based on the Euthyphro and the Open Question Argument that realism is untenable because it makes this mistake, and this clears the path to expressivism. Chapter 2 is a full account of the issues surrounding the Frege-Geach problem (often pressed against Hare), showing how it can be solved and how exactly the expressivist’s embrace of minimalism about truth interacts with the solution to the Frege-Geach Problem. I include an explanation of how the expressivist is able to solve the most threatening version of the problem: Schroeder’s discussion of negation. Chapter 3 argues for the connection between expressivism and Kantianism. The argument (roughly following Korsgaard) is that Humean versions of expressivism run into a sceptical challenge of normative regress. Kant employed a transcendental argument to resolve this regress, deriving his Formula of Universal Law from the Categorical Imperative. This argument defended with expressivism playing a crucial role. This chapter thus explains how Hare is entitled to universalizability in a way that avoids the shmoralising objection: it is not justified merely by being derived from our moral concepts but rather from our inescapable nature as agents. Chapter 4 illuminates the other connection, between Kantianism and utilitarianism. The largest part of the chapter is spent defending Hare’s argument from universalizability to utilitarianism. Doing so shows how Hare’s utilitarianism depends on his Kantianism, and so also how it indirectly depends on his utilitarianism. I then go on to defend Hare’s distinctive two-level version of utilitarianism, especially against the objections of Bernard Williams. It is also argued that various difficulties for utilitarianism – utility monsters, interpersonal comparison, Korsgaard’s objections – can be met by a form of utilitarianism like Hare’s, which is Kantian, and thus that such a form of utilitarianism is indeed the most defensible.

Van, Bolderen Trish. "Twice Heard, Hardly Seen: The Self-Translator's (In)Visibility." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28767.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the most common definition, self-translation refers to a phenomenon in which author and translator are the same individual. Self-translation has been practiced for centuries, and research on the practice has increased noticeably over the past 15 years. Yet, two main observations can be made with respect to academic interest pertaining to this phenomenon: first of all, to date, there exists no critical review of research conducted specifically on this topic; secondly, although certain scholars have noted that self-translation seems to be overlooked within translation studies texts in which translation is discussed as a general concept, little data has been provided to substantiate the extent to which this might be so. Therefore, in this thesis, I seek to identify which aspects of self-translation have been studied by self-translation scholars as well as what evidence there might be of self-translation in publications on translation as a broader topic. This investigation also reveals that which has not been studied, allowing the reasons for and implications of these gaps to be addressed. Ultimately, this project sheds light on the under-representation---or "invisibility"---of the self-translator and of self-translation within Translation Studies. In the first chapter, I conduct an etat des lieux of research on self-translation specifically, noting which aspects of self-translation have tended to be discussed and which have tended to be neglected. The second chapter involves analyzing the tables of contents and indices of encyclopedic publications as well as the argumentation of theoretical texts in order to ascertain whether there is evidence to substantiate that self-translation is under-represented. In the conclusion, I propose various reasons for which self-translation constitutes an important area of investigation within Translation Studies. 1An aided, simultaneous self-translation from the French version, with assistance from Joanne Desroches.

Spann, Jason Hans. "Hoosier National Forest Hardin Ridge Recreation Area redesign : a visitor experience oriented approach to the design and management of the Hardin Ridge recreation area." Virtual Press, 1996. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1020169.

Full text
Abstract:
This creative project examined design and management alternatives for the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area located in the Hoosier National Forest. The design intent of the project was to develop Hardin Ridge into a wildland recreation facility which offered visitors a variety of experiential opportunity and choice, and provided experiences which could effectively accommodate a demographically diversified population. This project would also provide environmental educational opportunities and attempt to retain the integrity of the sites natural systems. An examination of the importance and benefits of outdoor recreation, National Forest Service recreational planning, outdoor recreation demographic diversity and outdoor recreation design issues was conducted in formulating the projects design criteria and theory. This design criteria and theory was then utilized to create the design concepts directly applicable to the Hardin Ridge project site and develop a design ideology applicable to most U.S. wilderness recreation areas. The final product of the study was a design and management plan which effectively addressed the design objectives at Hardin Ridge and created a design model capable of meeting similar design objectives at the national level.
