Abstract:
Scapanoclypeus Evans (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Tanyproctini) was established with Trichinopus aberrans Frey designated as its type species and included five additional species: S. testaceus Evans, S. carinatus Evans, S. cornutus Evans, S. brunneus Evans, and S. aulacocoleatus Evans. Scapanoclypeus, Trichinopus Waterhouse, and Oedanomerus Waterhouse are distinguished from other African Tanyproctini by their small size (12 mm or less), reduced mouthparts, and antennae with 8–10 antennomeres (Evans 1987). Species of Scapanoclypeus and Oedanomerus have simple claws without cleft or teeth at base, a slightly conical labrum, and a third antennomere that is equal in length to the fourth; while Trichinopus has bifid claws, a distinctly conical labrum with rounded end, and the third antennomere approximately as long as the fourth (Lacroix 2007). The antennal club of Scapanoclypeus is at least three times longer than the combined length of antennomeres I–IV and the clypeal surface at nearly a right angle in relation to the plane of the frons, while Oedanomerus has an antennal club about as long as the combined length of antennomeres I–IV and coplanar clypeal and frontal surfaces (Evans 1987; Lacroix 2007; Sehnal 2013). Scapanoclypeus was subsequently mentioned in Lacroix (2007), who re-drew the figures and adopted the key from Evans (1987). Three additional species have since been described from southern Africa: S. triapicalis Sehnal, S. sinepunctatus Sehnal, and S. hardap Sehnal (see Sehnal 2013, 2014).

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Drinking water in rural areas is often contaminated due to poor sanitation practices, which cause problems such as diarrhea, polio and cholera. Rural water quality is a critical issue in Namibia because a great deal of the population lives in rural settlements. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of nitrate and some microbial parameters in borehole waters in 8 rural settlements in Hardap, Namibia. The tests were conducted in 2016 and the results compared to tests on the same boreholes in 2011. Parameters were determined using standard procedures. Water infrastructure and sanitation practices were also examined. Water parameters were compared to NamWater safe water drinking guidelines. The results revealed that sanitation practices need to be improved to avoid health risks. High levels of nitrate and coliform bacteria were identified as the most threatening contaminants that were determined. Water quality has deteriorated in these settlements since 2011, when only two of the boreholes yielded water unfit for drinking. In 2016 the number of unfit boreholes had increased to four. Systematic monitoring of groundwater quality, workshops on public health and sanitation practices, and improved sanitation facilities are recommended.

Willemse, Hein. "The politics of narrating Cinderella in Namibia." Tydskrif vir Letterkunde 41, no. 2 (April 20, 2018): 69–83. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/tvl.v41i2.29675.

Full text
Abstract:
This article reports on variations of the Cinderella fairytale as told by two southern Namibian storytellers, Martha Frederik and Katrina Louw. The analysis concentrates on the self-imagery of these storytellers as reflected in their performances. Although their stories are not overtly political they interpret their social environment, the relationships between men and women and employment interactions. In this sense these narratives communicate deeper dimensions of Namibian colonial relationships. Life in the towns of Aranos and Gochas is uninspiring, since these are small agricultural supply stations, settled in the mostly arid, sparse, semi-desert southern region of Namibia, Hardap. These communities are generally dirt poor, inhabited mainly by the unemployed, children, women and pensioners. The article further explores facets of the Frederik and Louw's re-interpretations of Cinderella. A few salient sections in especially the performance of Frederik are selected to demonstrate how the storytellers reconstruct their experience of life. Both texts are adapted intuitively to the storytellers' social circumstances and lived experience. The article concludes that it is through the exploration of such narrative experiences that the dialogical relationship between the powerful and the powerless can be understood.

Abstract:
The study explores teachers’ views on the impact of the English Language Proficiency Programme in Namibian schools that was implemented over a period of five years, from 2011 to 2015. The program aimed at improving teachers’ proficiency in English. The summative evaluation was conducted in 2016 in the following five (5) regions: Erongo, Hardap, Khomas, Ohangwena and Omusati, selected on the basis of the level of participation and accessibility. The evaluation focused on the following aspects of the project: program development, program implementation and administration as well as assessment of learning outcomes. The study followed a qualitative approach using document analysis to inform the development of evaluation instruments and a phenomenological design to assess teachers’ lived experiences during program implementation. Data was collected through focus group discussions among teachers. The study established that teachers did not appreciate the program as it was ill-planned, irrelevant to their needs and disturbed their daily routines. Nevertheless, a few teachers embraced the program and reported positive benefits in terms of teachers’ career development goals. The study recommends the revision of the program in terms of content and implementation procedures. In addition, teachers’ support systems, learning materials and the mode of delivery need improvement to effectively enhance teaching and learning in Namibian schools.

Abstract:
A reference range is an essential part of clinical laboratory test interpretation and patient care. The levels of total serum protein (TSP) are measured in sera to assess nutritional, liver, and kidney disorders. This study determined the TSP reference range with respect to gender, age, and region in Namibia. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the TSP reference range among 78,477 healthy participants within the ages of less than one year to more than 65 yrs in 14 regions of Namibia. The reference range of TSP was 51–91 g/L for females and 51–92 g/L for males. A reduced TSP range of 48.00–85.55 g/L (2.5–97.5 percentiles) was established at <1–5 years and increased towards adolescence. An uttermost range of 54–93 g/L was observed from 36–65 years of age. At the age >65 years; a steady decline in the reference range (51.00–89 g/L) was recorded. An upper TSP range of 53–92 g/L (2.5–97.5 percentiles) was detected in Erongo, Zambezi, Hardap, Kavango East, and a comparable trend was also seen in Omusati with a 54–91 g/L range. Meanwhile; a reduced TSP range of 50–89 g/L was identified in Ohangwena. This study showed that gender, age, and geographical location can impact TSP levels with a significant clinical difference (p < 0.05) between each category.

Full text
Abstract:
Alumina cement which was used in this investigation contains about 56% of Al2O3 in the component. Early compressive strength alumina cement at 1 and 3 days can be achieved of 85% compressive strength value at 28 days. After a long period of hydration, the compressive strength of alumina cement harder decreased due to the releasing process of aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)3] to the outside environment [1, 4,11]. To improve and maintain the long lasting compressive strength of alumina cement harden, new binders would be created SiO2- Al2O3 and among CaO-SiO2-Al2O3. The new binders would exist sustainably in the cement harden as a result of the chemical reaction between the product of hydrated cement called gel [Al(OH)3] with micro silica (amorphous SiO2) [4]. This report demonstrates the result of the investigation which is about the effect of silica fume and fly ash on alumina cement.

Motta, Philip Jay. "A quantitative analysis of ferric iron in butterflyfish teeth (Chaetodontidae, Perciformes) and the relationship to feeding ecology." Canadian Journal of Zoology 65, no. 1 (January 1, 1987): 106–12. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/z87-016.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite much work on the iron compounds found on invertebrate and vertebrate teeth, no interspecific quantitative analyses of iron compounds in fish teeth have ever been conducted, nor in any vertebrate has such a study related the iron concentrations to the feeding ecology. This study reveals that ferric iron exists on the tooth cap of eight species of chaetodontid butterflyfishes. The iron layer appears early in tooth development and is darkest, and presumably more concentrated, towards the tooth tip. There are significant differences among the eight species, with those that feed on harder prey having more iron than those that feed on softer-bodied prey. Furthermore, there exist differences among the species that correlate with the degree of morphological specialization for feeding on hard-bodied prey. The iron layer, which has been shown by others to be harder than the underlying enameloid, probably represents a specialization to harden the teeth, resisting abrasion and cracking.
