To days , computer systems are applied in safety critical areas such as military, aviation, intensive health care, industrial control, space exploration etc. All these areas demand highest possible reliability of functional operation. However, ionized particles and radiation impact on current semiconductor hardware leads inevitable to faults in the system. It is expected that such phenomena will be observed much more often in the future due to the ongoing miniaturisation of hardware structures. The top-down development methodology is, for the most part, a well defined subject. There is, however, one area of top-down development that lacks structure and definition. The undefined topic is the hardware, software, and firmware allocation of functions. This research addresses this deficiency in top-down system development. The key objective is the restructuring of the hardware, software, and firmware process from a subjective, qualitative decision process to a structured, quantitative one. Factors that affect the hardware, software, and firmware allocation process are identified. Qualita

It is a great challenge to build reliable computer systems with unreliable hardware and buggy software. On one hand, software bugs account for as much as 40% of system failures and incur high cost, an estimate of $59.5B a year, on the US economy. On the other hand, under the current trends of technology scaling, transient faults (also known as soft errors) in the underlying hardware are predicted to grow at least in proportion to the number of devices being integrated, which further exacerbates the problem of system reliability. Abstract:
Today’s embedded systems depend on the availability of hybrid platforms, that contain heterogeneous computing resources such as programmable processors units (CPU’s or DSP’s) and highly specialized hardware cores. These platforms have been scaled down to integrated embedded system-on-chip. Modern platform FPGAs enhance such systems by the flexibility of runtime configurable silicon. One of the major advantages that arises is the ability to use hardware (HW) and software (SW) resources in a time-shared manner. Though the ability to dynamically assign computing resources based on decisions taken
