Abstract:
The purpose of this article was to trace the growth and development of the Guild of St. Cecilia. This late nineteenth century organisation was founded by Frederick Kill Harford in London to provide music therapy to hospitalised patients. All information was derived from letters written by Harford and editorials that appeared in British medical and music periodicals. Initially, the Guild enjoyed great success and was endorsed by important people such as Florence Nightingale and Sir Richard Quain, physician to Queen Victoria. The Rev. Harford was astute in his observations that the effects of music must be tested to find the most beneficial ways for it to be used as therapy. He envisaged an association that would provide live and transmitted music via telephone to London's hospitals. Ultimately, due to the lack of support from the press, limited financial resources and Harford's ill health the organisation failed to prosper. Despite this, the Guild of St. Cecilia remains important because it kept alive the idea that music could be used therapeutically to benefit physically and mentally ill people.

Abstract:
Demuth and Harford (1999) contend that in Bantu relatives, the verb raises from I-C if the relative morpheme is a bound morpheme while the subject remains in spec-IP resulting in subject –verb inversion. Ikalanga, a Bantu language spoken in Botswana has no subject verb inversion in relatives although the relative morpheme appears to be a bound morpheme. This observation challenges the conclusion reached in Demuth and Harford (1999). This raises the question, What then is the structure of the relative clause in languages like Ikalanga and Luganda? This paper argues that Ikalanga relative clauses differ from other Bantu relative clauses in that the projection that houses the relative feature (RelP) projects below TP while in Bantu languages where subject verb inversion is observed such as Shona it projects higher than TP. Thus, the variation in the structures of Bantu relative clauses can be accounted for if we understand that there is a parametric variation in the position in which RelP projects; lower than TP or higher than TP.

Abstract:
Master´s Thesis - French Harp Virtuoses and Their Compossitional Contribution - is focused on a harpist, since the invention of single action harp, starting with Jean-Pierre Bauer to Dominiga Bouchaud, the harpist who represents the second half of the twentieth century. These artists often came from harpist families in which this craft ( harp), like in other fields was inherited to next genaration. The French virtuoses were active solo and chamber players, pedagogues, theorists and innovators of harp mechanism. They contributed to the expansion of harp repertoire, thanks to their original works as well as transcription of works that were not originally written for harp. The´ve written many harp´s methods, which have helped in improving technigue of many students, these methods are still in use not only in France at present time. Henriette Renié, Marcel Grandjany, Carlos Salzedo, and other virtuoses inspired other artists to create music for this instrument by their highly artistic qualities.Among the composers who had been charmed by the sound of harp were C.Debussy, A.Roussel, M. Ravel, A.Ginastera, A.Caplet and many more...

Abstract:
Until now among the works catalogue of the harpist and composer Elias Perish Alvars there was no trace of a composition called " Grande Fantasie sur des Airs Nationaux Anglais" for solo harp. We have found it in the library archive of the Czech Museum of Music in Prague: it is a manuscript autographed by the composer, dated 1843 and never publishe before. The main section of the dissertation regards the manuscript itself. The studying of it has been faced from a formal, harmonic, stylistic and historic point of view. After an introduction about the "Fantasia" every air is examined in detail, without leaving out the historic information behind every section. The most important part is then the critical edition of the manuscript that respects very carefully all the indications made by Parish Alvars in person. After a section to the enchanting figure of the composer, his life, works and the period he had lived in, the work gives references also to the double action pedal harp that had the main role in the harp music harp since its patent of 18140. The "Grande Fantasie" interesting discovery is composition and we are glad to present it in this dissertation work.

This topic is important because of the growing need for us to produce and supply low cost energy for public consumption. Demand has increased exponentially, and in order to reduce dependence on foreign oil, coal, and natural gas we need to utilize waste to its full potential. Three major waste to energy plant expansions are happening now at Olmstead WTE, Minnesota and at Lee and Hillsborough Counties, in Florida. New “Greenfield” construction is planned at Harford, Carroll, and Fredrick Counties, in Maryland.

Abstract:
Each year of the Biomedical Engineering program at the University of Harford includes courses that include student based research projects. The Freshman course “Introduction to Engineering” course includes projects requiring the designing, building and testing of devices (including statistical analysis and in-class presentations). During the Sophomore year, “Biomedical Materials” includes multiple journal-style laboratory reports. During the Junior year, “Biomechanics” includes student research projects (including such issues as reproducibility and accounting for human variances), and “Biofluids” includes a research paper. The senior year course, “Bioinstrumentation”, includes projects monitoring physiological parameters. The senior year also includes two sets of research and design-based courses: two courses in senior design pursuing research for outside principals, and an off-campus research course where the student performs as the engineer on a research project. The former course culminates in a formal oral and written presentation. The latter course allows students to work at local, regional, and national medical facilities, and to participate in clinically useful research. Our philosophy for these courses has been both to involve the student in the requirements and needs of pursuing research, and to prepare them for the expectations of those who will be reviewing their efforts after they graduate.
