Abstract:
The paper explores the significance of the Chinese concept of harmony (he, xiehe) for establishing a stable and efficient global governance. The author assumes that to meet demands of the emerging global community this concept should be assessed in the context of two other important notions: “commonality” (yong) and “similarity” or “sharing” (tong). The merging of these concepts has been a real basis of the Chinese tradition and it can serve as a foundation of a new global order based on the principle of synergy.

Abstract:
Although their value-judgments diverge, neo-Confucian and American continental philosophers agree that Gadamer’s hermeneutics is anti-foundationalist. Neither side, however, has asked why he frequently appeals to standards of harmony, or why he models the art of medicine on the order of nature. These indicate a commitment to trans-historical foundation of One and many that forms the basis for comparisons with Chinese aesthetics in the Yijing tradition. These foundations are grounded in Gadamer’s reading of Plato and shape his onto-dialogical interpretive method. In contrast to Whitehead, Gadamer cements the One and many in practical life by removing the contradiction through a transformation in human ethos.

Abstract:
Harmony is one of the concepts that permeate the history of human creation in varied fields: philosophy, arts, music, science, economics, politics, etc. It is a preoccupation of the Pythagorean, of Plato and Aristotle, and a governing principle theorised during the times of the Byzantine Empire. However, in Cicero’s political thinking, harmony is the foundation stone of the organisation and functioning of the republic as body politic, a political principle which reflects the principle of the entire universe. Somnium Scipionis (The Dream of Scipio), an allegory on the harmony of the universe, is the closing part of the treatise De re publica, by which Cicero, inspired by Plato and synthetizing stoic, epicurean and neoplatonic ideas, bestows his political testament upon world culture and advocates the cultivation of virtue.

Abstract:
The study of the dynamic behaviour of non-uniform thickness circular plate resting on elastic foundations is very imperative in designing structural systems. This present research investigates the free vibration analysis of varying density and non-uniform thickness isotropic circular plates resting on Winkler and Pasternak foundations. The governing differential equation is analysed using the Galerkin method of weighted residuals. Linear and nonlinear case is considered, the surface radial and circumferential stresses are also determined. Thereafter, the accuracy and consistency of the analytical solutions obtained are ascertained by comparing the existing results available in pieces of literature and confirmed to be in a good harmony. Also, it is observed that very accurate results can be obtained with few computations. Issues relating to the singularity of circular plate governing equations are handled with ease. The analytical solutions obtained are used to determine the influence of elastic foundations, homogeneity and thickness variation on the dynamic behaviour of the circular plate, the effect of vibration on a free surface of the foundation as well as the influence of radial and circumferential stress on mode shapes of the circular plate considered. From the results, it is observed that a maximum of 8.1% percentage difference is obtained with the solutions obtained from other analytical methods. Furthermore, increasing the elastic foundation parameter increases the natural frequency. Extrema modal displacement occurs due to radial and circumferential stress. Natural frequency increases as the thickness of the circular plate increases, Conversely, a decrease in natural frequency is observed as the density varies. It is envisioned that; the present study will contribute to the existing knowledge of the classical theory of vibration.

Abstract:
This project explores research-based methods for creating an e-learning resource to teach an intellectual skill. Intellectual skills are one of the five domains of learning defined by Robert M. Gagné. The intellectual skill taught via the e-learning resource is the rules of Turkish vowel harmony, a fundamental phonological feature of the Turkish language. The purpose of the e-learning resource is to provide novice learners with a set of tools and strategies with which to approach the future study of Turkish. A literature review was conducted in three areas: Gagné’s instructional design theories, Turkish language learning, and best practices for the design of multimedia e-learning. Two rapid prototypes in the form of Moodle course sites were developed. Guidance for improving the prototypes was sought from experts in instructional design, usability, and computer software. The resulting finished e-learning product is a nine-topic Moodle course based on Gagné’s nine events of instruction. The main Moodle course content teaches the rules of Turkish vowel harmony as an intellectual skill which has been broken down into discriminations (the Turkish vowels), concepts (the Turkish vowel groups) and rules (Turkish vowel harmony). Higher order rules are taught in the form of exceptions to the rules of Turkish vowel harmony found in foreign loan-words in Turkish. Practice is provided in applying the rules of Turkish vowel harmony as a set of word attack skills for approaching Turkish language artifacts found online and in the environment. A comprehensive list of resources relating to learning Turkish, learning about the Turkish language, and learning about learning Turkish, is provided to facilitate future extension and application of what was learned in this course. Each lesson is presented in the form of a Moodle book. Each lesson is followed by an ungraded assessment in the form of an Adobe® PDF quiz. The quizzes and accompanying answer keys are designed to provide guided practice, feedback, and self-assessment to help students extend and apply the lesson material. All lessons were beta-tested to ensure usability and reduction of extraneous cognitive load. The project resulted in the development of a Best Practices Checklist for designing e-learning resources to teach intellectual skills. The Best Practices Checklist, which can be found in Appendix B, was used to develop the outline for e-learning resources to teach intellectual skills in other subject areas and was found to be an effective rapid prototyping and instructional design tool. Insight was gained into the significance of prior knowledge for teaching intellectual skills, and on how to calibrate cognitive load in e-learning design relative to the learner’s prior knowledge of the subject matter being taught.

Abstract:
Flexible polyurethane foams used for cushioning in the furniture and automotive industries serve as foundations and exhibit complex nonlinear viscoelastic behavior. To design systems that incorporate these materials, it is important to model their mechanical behavior and then to predict the dynamic response of such systems. The example of a pinned-pinned beam interacting with a nonlinear viscoelastic foundation is the focus of the present study. The foundation can either react in compression as well as tension (bilateral), or react only in compression (unilateral). In the latter case, the contact regions between the beam and the foundation are not known a priori, and thus the coefficients of the modal equations obtained in a Galerkin approximation solution approach, are functions of the solution as well. It is therefore computationally expensive to predict the dynamic and steady-state response of these structures to static and harmonic loads. For polynomial-type nonlinearities, it is possible to speed up the computation time by using a convolution method to evaluate integral terms in the model. Also, if only the steady-state response is of interest, direct-time integration can be replaced by incremental harmonic balance to make the frequency response predictions more efficient. The effect of axial load and the influence of various parameters e.g., loading configuration, excitation amplitude, linear and nonlinear stiffness, on the response of the beam on unilateral and bilateral foundations are studied.

Abstract:
New Jack-up ships are built to transport offshore wind turbines from harbor and assemble them with the help of cranes on the ship at the site of installation. Every ship has four stilts, which can be lowered to seabed and jack the ship up. However, penetration and extraction the stilts at the harbor area could jeopardize the existing quay wall construction. In this paper two conceptual designs of foundations, which are used to improve the strength of the seabed in front of the quay wall, are investigated using numerical methods. Through soil exchange in open-ended cylinder or bucket foundation the strength of the seabed should be improved so that jack-up ships can dock directly at the quay wall and lower the stilts into the foundations. Three dimensional finite element analysis using a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method (CEL) are carried out to simulate penetration and extraction process. A hypoplastic constitutive model and the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model are used to describe the filling. The studies of influences of geometry of foundations as well as the soil parameters on the bearing capacity of stilts and failure mechanism in foundations are carried out as the design basis of the foundations.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines the forced response of an airplane engine supported by an elastic foundation. It is assumed that the vibrations of the engine and the foundation are small enough such that the equations of motion are linear. The engine is modeled as a rigid body connected to the foundation by standard industrial rubber mounts which act as three dimensional springs with a significant amount of hysteresis damping. Three fundamental models of the foundation are considered: rigid, statically flexible, and dynamically flexible. In the flexible cases, the foundation is modeled as a clamped circular plate, infinite plate, or any structure identified by a finite element stiffness matrix. In all cases, the mass, stiffness, and damping matrices of the engine-mount system are constructed and the frequency response to the rotating unbalance is determined. For the infinite and clamped circular plate cases, analytical methods are used to determine the real and imaginary parts of the flexibility matrix at different frequencies in response to the harmonic forces transmitted to the plate through the rubber mounts. It is shown here that the foundation elasticity may have a significant effect on the engine vibration and the mounting forces transmitted from the engine to the structure. It is also shown that only the dynamic model of the foundation is able to capture the correct response of the system at frequencies close to the foundation’s natural frequencies.

Abstract:
This paper examines the steady-state forced vibration of a moving medium that is guided by a partial elastic foundation, and where geometric imperfections on the medium’s edge act as an excitation source. Such a system is of technical interest in the areas of web handling and magnetic tape transport where externally-pressurized air bearing guides are sometimes used to control lateral position. The axially-moving strip is modeled here as a string that is guided by elastic foundation segments and that is subjected to traveling wave excitation as the edge imperfections interact with the foundations. The equation of motion for this “moving medium and moving load” system incorporates a skew-symmetric Coriolis acceleration component that arises from convection. The governing equation is cast in the state-space form, with one symmetric and one skew-symmetric operator, as is characteristic of gyroscopic systems. Through modal analysis, the forced response of the system is obtained to the complex harmonic excitation associated with the interaction between the edge weave and the guides. Parameter studies are presented in the transport speed, foundation stiffness, guide placement, guide width, and imperfection wavelength. Of potential technological application, for a given wavelength of the edge imperfection, it is possible to reduce the medium’s vibration at a certain location by judiciously selecting the locations and spans of the foundation segments.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents an numerical study on a large unanchored open-topped steel tank. The buckling behaviors of the tank are analyzed using the finite element computer package ANSYS by means of nonlinear stabilization algorithm. The effects of foundation harmonic settlement on the elephant foot buckling strength of large unanchored open-topped oil storage tanks with tapered shells under axial compression are explored by numerical modeling. Various items of actual geometrical structure which involve concrete ringwall foundation of tank, unanchored bottom with slope, shell tapering from the base to the top, wind girders and supports, top angles, stiffening rings and support plates are presented thoroughly in the non-symmetrical 3D finite element model. Geometric nonlinearity, nonlinear boundary conditions and elastic plastic material of Ramberg-Osgood model are involved simultaneously in simulate course. The obtained solutions are displayed graphically for selected values of system parameters: harmonic settlement amplitude, harmonic number, and critical buckling stress of axially compressed oil tank.
