Abstract:
Harmonics refers to a form of electrical distortion that can adversely impact power systems, electrical equipment, and the overall quality of power supply. The presence of non-linear loads, such as electronic devices, can cause the current waveform to deviate from the ideal sine wave, resulting in higher frequency currents that are multiples of the fundamental frequency. These distortions can lead to several negative effects, such as reduced power factor, increased energy losses, equipment overheating, and electromagnetic interference. These, in turn, can lower system efficiency, increase energy consumption, and escalate equipment maintenance costs. Several approaches have been developed to address the adverse effects of harmonics, such as the use of filters, capacitors, and other reactive components. These techniques aim to minimize harmonic distortion and improve power supply quality. This paper examines the effectiveness of a 1kVAr detuned reactor in mitigating harmonic distortion in power systems and electrical components. The detuned filter reactor reduces the harmonic distortion actively. It does so by monitoring the harmonic content of the power and injecting a counteracting current to cancel out the harmonic frequencies, creating a subtle "detuning" effect that reduces harmonic distortion. Detuned filter reactors find extensive application in radio and audio equipment, among other fields.

Abstract:
Abstract The development of new methods for the study of agricultural products is an actual task. A large number of studies on the electrical properties of biological objects are performed today for scientific and industrial purposes. Distortions of electric signals are considered conventionally as harmful. The authors performed test-bench analysis of harmonic distortion, produced by different agricultural products. Apple, banana, tomato, tangerine were tested. The digital source of sinusoidal signals and a computed spectrum analyzer were main components of the test-bench circuit. Results of measurements of harmonics, from first to tenth, were presented in a graphic form. Each kind of agricultural products created harmonic distortion with an authentic set and a level of harmonics. So, the authors have shown the ability of analyzing harmonic distortions to determine properties of agricultural products.

Abstract This paper aims to evaluate the performance of commercial class A and class S power quality (PQ) instruments when measuring time-varying harmonics. By using a high precision programmable voltage and current source, two meters from different manufacturers are analyzed and compared. Three-phase voltage signals are applied to PQ instruments, considering 3 situations of time-varying harmonic distortions, whose harmonic distortion values are in accordance with typical values found in power systems. This work is relevant considering that international standardization documents do not pay much attention to this aspect of harmonic distortion.

Abstract:
Harmonic distortion is one of the most important power quality issues in third rail electrification systems. The use of rectifiers and inverters in the third rail system can inject a significant amount of harmonic distortion to the electrical network. This paper aims to investigate the harmonic distortions for a DC urban third rail system at various operating conditions. The electrical network of Mass Rapid Transit Line 2 (MRT 2) Malaysia is modelled using ETAP software. The model had considered the effect of the inter-phase transformer in the 12-pulse rectifier. The current injection method is used to measure harmonic distortion at Point of Common Coupling (PCC) at the 132 kV and 33 kV buses. A normal and degraded operating conditions of power supply are investigated. From the simulation results, it is found that the 11th and 13th order harmonics have exceeded the statutory limit at 33 kV network for the normal operating condition. For the degraded operating condition, only the 11th harmonic order has exceeded the statutory limit. Keywords: Harmonic Distortion; DC Urban Rail; Various Operating Conditions

Abstract:
Solar and renewable plants are increasingly being added to national grids. One technical drawback of renewable generators is that they tend to cause a significant harmonic distortion of the current and voltage waveforms. The harmonic distortions are amplified when the natural resonances of the grid interact with the injected harmonics from the power electronic based PV generation. A sustained harmonic distortion can lead to equipment failure, reduced plant output or a complete plant shutdown. Therefore, it is important to study harmonic interactions and resonance issues using fully detailed EMT models before the commissioning of a renewable plant. This paper outlines important features of modelling solar converters for the use of harmonic and resonance studies.

Abstract:
The increasing penetration of grid-connected PV rooftops at the distribution level still entails significant technical challenges affecting seriously the power quality indices such as harmonics and voltage fluctuations. Owing to the intermittent nature of renewable resources, the changing incident energy from renewables can generate considerable amounts of harmonics. Moreover, power electronic devices and nonlinear loads that are used frequently in the industry may exaggerate the harmonic distortions as well. Accordingly, utilizing suitable filtration techniques for harmonic reduction is crucial. In order to evaluate the impacts of grid-connected PVs in modern grids, a case study on power quality and voltage profile is conducted with a large grid-connected PV microgrid of 9570 kW, feeding a large hospital project in Saudi Arabia as an initial phase of implementing this project in the future. For eliminating the possible increase in harmonic distortion, a single-tuned filter is used to cope with the permissible limits according to the known IEEE standards. This filtering technique is chosen due to its advantages including the simplicity, suitability for significant integer harmonic orders, and low cost. For evaluation tests, a detailed simulation is developed by the ETAP program for the overall selected project as well as the aimed PV subsystem. Several simulation tests are conducted to investigate the harmonic distortion problem. The results show a significant reduction in the individual harmonic distortion (IHD) and the total harmonic distortion (THD) below 8% according to considered IEEE standards for LV networks. Both 6 and 12 pule inverters are considered. This is considered an important step in the realization of such large PV projects in the field.

Abstract Modulation and harmonic distortion produced by ordinary moving-coil direct-radiator drive units are measured under current control and voltage control. A realistic two-tone test signal is used to investigate the detrimental effect of the voice coil electromotive forces on the voltage-to-current conversion that is critical with voltage control. Dramatic improvements in distortion performance are obtained with current control. Current nonlinearities in voltage-controlled speakers are shown to be the dominant source of modulation and odd harmonic distortions at signal frequencies above the fundamental resonance region. Currents in conductive voice coil formers also seem to be significant sources of distortion; with current control and non-conductive formers, odd harmonics and related modulation products virtually vanished in the upper midrange.

Abstract:
<span lang="EN-US">The extensive use of power electronic converters in the third rail system increases the harmonic distortions on the rail electrical feeding systems. Electrical machines and transformers could be overheated causing premature failures of the devices. It is therefore important to address the harmonic distortions on the electrical networks during real-time operation, which includes the degraded operation, not just the normal operation. In this paper, the harmonic distortions of a third rail system are investigated using electrical transient and analysis program (ETAP) simulation software. Four operating scenarios, namely the normal operation and three degraded operations, are considered in the studies. The degraded operations occur when one of the bulk supply transformers or 33 kV feeders is out of service. The findings of the studies showed that the 11th and 13th order harmonics are the dominant harmonic orders due to the use of 12-pulse rectifiers on the third rail system. Single-tuned harmonic filters are designed and placed in the 33 kV feeders to mitigate the individual voltage harmonic distortion (IHDv) and the total voltage harmonic distortion (THDv) so that it is within the statutory of IEEE 519:2014.</span>

Abstract:
Newer technologies like Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Distributed Generation (DG) are being viewed as potential harmonic distortion threats for the distribution systems which are already facing increased harmonic stress due to the increased use of the non-linear home appliances in the recent years. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate and analyze the harmonic distortion due to the various non-linear home appliances, EV battery chargers and DG inverters to give a clear picture of the future scenario. So that future technologies can be accommodated in the distribution systems while the existing harmonic distortion threats are dealt with. This research work investigates the harmonic spectrums of various non-linear residential loads, battery chargers and DG inverters which are then deployed to perform various simulations of the distribution systems, using Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ET AP), considering several different scenarios. A high penetration level of non-linear residential loads is considered to simulate the current scenario. The results show high level of harmonic distortion at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The investigation is then extended to simulate the future scenarios by considering advent of the EV s and DG. The results indicate a significant increase in the Total Harmonic Distortion in the Voltage (THDv) in the presence of EVs and DG, at the PCC. Currently, Demand Side Management (DSM) strategies are primarily being designed based upon the daily load profile only. This research work gives a different perspective for the DSM based upon "Daily Harmonic Profile" developed by combining the experimental and simulation results. The results indicate that throughout the day, the THDv has a value of more than 1.5 % with per hour average THDv being equal to 3.25 %. The-situation worsens if the increased winter loading is considered to investigate the daily harmonic profile. This research work also explores the potential impacts of the developed profile on the DSM schemes to control the harmonic distortion in the future distribution systems.

Abstract:
The first loudspeaker was invented almost 150 years ago and even though much has changed regarding the manufacturing, the main idea is still the same. To produce clean sound, modern loudspeaker consist of expensive materials that often need advanced manufacturing equipment. The relatively newly established company Actiwave AB uses digital signal processing to enhance the audio for loudspeakers with poor acoustic properties. Their algorithms concentrate on attenuating the linear distortion but there is no compensation for the loudspeakers' non-linear distortion, such as harmonic distortion. To attenuate the harmonic distortion, this thesis presents controllers based on exact input-output linearisation. This type of controller needs an accurate model of the system. A loudspeaker model has been derived based on the LR-2 model, an extension of the more common Thiele-Small model. A controller based on exact input-output linearisation also needs full state feedback, but since feedback risk being expensive, state estimators were used. The state estimators were based on feed-forward or observers using the extended Kalman filter or the unscented Kalman filter. A combination of feed-forward state estimation and a PID controller were designed as well. In simulations, the total harmonic distortion was attenuated for all controllers up to 180 Hz. The simulations also showed that the controllers are sensitive to inaccurate parameter values in the loudspeaker model. During real-life experiments, the controllers needed to be extended with a model of the used amplifier to function properly. The controllers that were able to attenuate the harmonic distortion were the two methods using feed-forward state estimation. Both controllers showed improvement compared to the uncontrolled case for frequencies up to 40 Hz.

Abstract:
This study had two purposes: first, to collect information relating to harmonic and intermodulation distortion from several sources into one comprehensive report and second, to describe and develop an interactive CD-ROM as a new method of learning harmonic and intermodulation distortion. The CD-ROM allows students to interact and control the percentage amount of harmonic and intermodulation distortion in order to "calibrate" their ears. In addition, the practical testing environment changes on a random basis to continually challenge the users. These situations allow students to interact at their own speed and therefore customize their learning development.

Abstract:
Abstract Permian oil producers are facing increasing pressure from electric utilities to reduce power system harmonics, and the consequences for non-compliance can be severe. This paper details the results of a field-scale effort to reduce harmonics for a ChampionX UNBRIDLED® ESP Systems customer in the Permian basin, and how proper application and troubleshooting of harmonic filters exceeded customer and utility goals. Electric utilities have long understood that variable speed drives (VSDs) are a significant source of harmonic distortion. However, distortion limits generally have not been imposed on oil producers because utilities have not been significantly impacted, until now. Due to the large number of VSDs currently operating in the Permian basin (predominantly 6- pulse drives), the harmonics problem for utilities has reached a tipping point. In some locations, distortion of the power grid has become so severe that utilities are no longer able to communicate with smart metering devices – such devices are essential for utility billing and loss of communication with even one of these devices is a serious issue. As a result, Permian utilities have begun mandating harmonic distortion limits, as well as setting deadlines to complete harmonic remediation work. Failure to meet the utility mandates can result in severe consequences for oil producers, including disconnection of electric service or heavy penalties.
