<p>This paper focuses on the analysis of the connection of wind farms to the electric power system and their impact on the harmonic load-flow. A possibilistic harmonic load-flow methodology, previously developed by the authors, allows for modeling uncertainties related to linear and nonlinear load variations. On the other hand, it is well known that some types of wind turbines also produce harmonics, in fact, time-varying harmonics. The purpose of this paper is to present an improvement of the former method, in order to include the uncertainties due to the wind speed variations as an inp

In this paper, based on the analysis of the basic electromagnetic relation for the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), the fundamental and harmonic equivalent circuits are presented. The harmonic propagation from the stator to the rotor side and in sub-synchronous mode and super-synchronous mode is explained. The model of probabilistic harmonic load flow equivalent circuits for DFIG is presented. Then, the influence of the harmonic from DFIG to a small power system are analysed. Harmonic penetration can be problematic by the growing interconnection of Wind Turbines (WTs) in distribution networks. Since the active power outputs of WTs and loads in the distribution system have uncertainties, the optimal WT penetration level problem can be considered to have a stochastic nature. In this study, this problem is taken into account in the stochastic optimization method with the consideration of uncertainties in wind speed and distribution network load profile. As a continuation of the work done by the QSE (Electrical Supply Quality) research group at the UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) on harmonic load flow in electric power networks, this thesis aims to study existing harmonic load flow formulations, as well as the numerical resolution of the nonlinear equation systems derived from these formulations, in order to propose improvements for the former and compare performances of numerical methods for the latter. The improvements in the harmonic load flow formulations are related to a reduction in the number of iterations, for which an improv

This thesis presents a comprehensive solution technique for power system harmonic analysis with unbalanced load flow conditions. It is based on multiphase modelling of the system in phase quantities. Two of the most important features of this technique are the multiphase approach to the harmonic load flow problem, and the capability to add component nonlinearities easily. The first feature allows the technique to be used for either single-phase or three-phase, and for either balanced or unbalanced harmonic analysis. The second feature allows the later addition of power electronic device mode

This thesis investigates two algorithms for the steady state analysis of HVDC convertor plant. The first is an already well established frequency domain technique, known as IHA (Iterative Harmonic Analysis), and the investigation centres on the nature of the algorithm under divergent conditions. In particular, a mathematical analysis of the algorithm is used to prove that divergence of the algorithm is not necessarily indicative of a physical harmonic instability. The second algorithm is developed to exploit the IHA technique within the context of the three phase a.c.-d.c. loadflow as an alt

The connection of high penetrations of new low carbon technologies such as PV and electric vehicles onto the distribution network is expected to cause power quality problems and the thermal capacity of feeder cables may be exceeded. Replacement of existing infrastructure is costly and so feeder cables are likely to be operated close to their hosting capacity. Network operators therefore require accurate simulation models so that new connection requests are not unnecessarily constrained. “Hardware in the Loop” (HIL) testing is widely used in the automotive industry. The sophisticated electronic control units used for vehicle control are usually tested and evaluated using HIL-simulations. The HIL increases the degree of realistic testing of any system. Moreover, it helps in designing the structure and control of the system under test so that it works effectively in the situations that will be encountered in the system. Due to the size and the complexity of interaction within a power network, most research is based on pure simulation. To validate the performance of physical gene

These waveforms are called harmonics, and the harmonics will cause the load of the power system to overheat. And other issues. Abstract:
Power Electronics is the study of switching electronic devices and circuits to convert and control the flow of electrical energy. Power Electronics is the basic technology of switching power supplies, power converters, power inverters, motor drives, and motor soft starters. Inverters are devices that transform DC input into fixed AC output through changing the trigger angle, in the ideal statues the output wave form is perfect sine wave, however in the practical case it has some higher harmonics that need to be reduced. Inverters are an important part of UPS systems, fully explained in this chapter, where UPSs are uninterruptible Power Supply in which the inverters are included as an essential part, that can provide emergency power to a load when the input power source or main power source fails.
