Abstract:
Three experiments investigated the cues used by musicians and nonmusicians asked to rate their confidence that an implied harmony change had or had not occurred at a specified point in pseudo- randomly generated, isochronous, triadic melodies that conformed to the rules of elementary classical harmony. In the first experiment, a single melody note followed the putative point of harmony change, and subjects' responses were predictable on the basis of whether this note was contained in the previous triad and the size of the melodic interval between this note and the one preceding it. Musicians were relatively more influenced by the former factor, and nonmusicians, by the latter one. In the second experiment, five to seven melody notes followed the putative point of harmony change, which greatly reduced control by the harmonic relationship of the first of these to the previous triad, but the effect of melodic interval size persisted. The third experiment verified the findings of the first two by using the cues that had been identified in them as design variables and evaluating their effect with conventional analytic statistics. This experiment also parametrically manipulated the number of notes after the putative point of harmony change and showed that maximum confidence concerning the occurrence of an implied harmony change was reached with the first note that did not belong to the previous triad. Possible mechanisms for use of these cues to implied harmony changes are discussed, and directions for future research are indicated.

Abstract:
All languages change over time. English has undergone continuous change throughout its three major periods: Old English (roughly from 450 to 1100 AD), Middle English (from 1100 to 1500), and Modern English (from 1500 to the present). Sound is one of the most easily influenced parts of language to be subject to different changes. Sound change is inevitable and it is a live indication of the continuous growth of language. The evidence to prove the regularity and systematicity of sound change has been the main concern of linguists, This paper seeks to provide more evidence on how vowel harmony played a key role on the regularity of sound change by extracting samples of sound changes that have taken place throughout the English history.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Arnett and Bergman (1999) have proved that orthodontic treatment, facial soft tissue analysis, diagnosis, and treatment plan have parameters of harmony values as the key to determining facial aesthetics. Treatment of skeletal class II malocclusion with maxillary prognathism is generally performed by extracting two maxillary first premolars to correct the patient’s facial profile. This study was aimed to analyse changes in the facial harmony values after class II malocclusion treatment with the extraction of the maxillary first premolar following Arnett and Bergman’s analysis. Methods: This research was observational analytic with a purposive sampling technique. The study sample was 72 images of skeletal class II malocclusion lateral cephalometry before and after orthodontic treatment. Assessment of soft tissue harmony was divided into four, namely intramandibular harmony, intermaxillary harmony, orbital to jaw harmony, and facial balance. Data was not normally distributed, as resulted from Shapiro Wilk analysis. The analysis in this study was conducted using Shapiro Wilk and Spearman’s analysis. Results: There were changes in intramandibular harmony and facial balance in skeletal class II malocclusion with the maxillary first premolar extraction before and after treatment (p=0.025 and p=0.032, respectively ). There was no change found in the value of intermaxillary harmony and the orbital to the jaw harmony in skeletal class II malocclusion with extraction of the maxillary first premolar before and after treatment. There was a high effect of incisor retraction on the facial harmony values before and after treatment in class II treatment with extraction of two maxillary premolars (p=0.001). Conclusion: Treatment of skeletal class II malocclusion with extraction of two maxillary first premolars has a relationship between the magnitude of retraction and changes in facial harmony values based on Arnett and Bergmann’s analysis. Keywords: Class II skeletal malocclusion, extraction of two maxillary first premolar, facial harmony.

Abstract:
Vowel harmony involves the systematic correspondence between vowels in some domain for some phonological feature. Though harmony represents one of the most natural and diachronically robust phonological phenomena that occurs in human language, how and why harmony systems emerge and decay over time remains unclear. Specifically, what motivates harmony decay and the pathways by which harmony languages lose harmony remains poorly understood since no consistent historical record in any single language has yet been identified which displays the full progression of this rare sound change (McCollum 2015, 2020; Kavitskaya 2013, Bobaljik 2018). In this paper, I explore the progression and causation of vowel harmony decay in Old Norwegian (c 1100–1350). Using a grapho‐phonologically tagged database of a sample of 13th‐ to 14th‐century manuscripts, I present novel corpus methods for tracking and visualising changes to vowel co‐occurrence patterns in historical records, demonstrating that the Old Norwegian corpus provides a consistent and coherent record of harmony decay. The corpus distinguishes categorical pre‐decay harmony, probabilistic intermediate stages, and post‐decay non‐harmony. Across the Old Norwegian manuscripts, we observe a variety of pathways of harmony decay, including increasing harmony variability via the collapse of harmony classes introduced by vowel mergers, the lexicalisation of historically harmonising morphemes, and trisyllabic vowel reductions which limit harmony iterativity. This paper provides the first detailed corpus study of the full spectrum and causation of this rare sound change in progress and provides valuable empirical diagnostics for identifying and analysing harmony change in contemporary languages.

Abstract:
The importance of harmony perception in understanding tonal melodies has been extensively studied, but underlying processes of implied harmonic perception remain unexplored. This study explores how listeners perceive implied harmony in real-time while hearing tonal melodies by addressing two questions: How is each tone of a tonal melody harmonically interpreted and integrated into the previous tones? How do harmonic expectations of “what” chord will follow and “when” the chord change will occur affect the processing? Participants with music training listened to tonal melodies and responded to target tones by singing their pitches as quickly as possible. The target tones implied an expected or an unexpected chord; they occurred at expected or unexpected times. The results showed that sing-back reaction times (RTs) were shorter for: 1) tones implying an expected chord; and 2) chord changes occurring at expected times, suggesting that harmonic expectations facilitate the processing of tonal melodies. Also, RTs became shorter over the presentation of successive target tones implying the same chord, suggesting that implied harmony becomes clearer as more tones belonging to a single chord are presented.

Abstract:
The present study examines both gradual and rapid changes occurring in 20th-century jazz harmonic practice. A newly-assembled corpus of 1,086 jazz compositions was used to test the idea that jazz music exhibits a mid-century decline in traditionally “tonal” chord usage. Evidence was found for slow, incremental changes in zeroth-order chord quality distributions, consistent with gradual, unconscious changes in harmonic usage. Typical tonal chord-to-chord transitions became less common between the 1920s and the 1960s, consistent with the hypothesis of tonal decline. Finally, use of root motion of an ascending perfect fourth dropped suddenly in the 1950s, suggesting that chord-to-chord transitions might be more susceptible to rapid change than chord frequency. Possible constraints on stylistic evolution are discussed.

Abstract:
Two experiments examined sensitivity to key change in short sequences adapted from Bach chorales. In Experiment 1, musically trained listeners identified key changes in single-voice (i.e., soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and in four-voice presentations of the sequences. There were two main findings. First, listeners judged the distance and direction of key change in single voices and in four-voice harmony with approximately equal ease. Second, for four-voice harmony but not for single voices, the direction of key change on the cycle of fifths influenced perceived distance. For an equivalent number of steps on the cycle, greater distance was associated with modulations moving in the counterclockwise, rather than in the clockwise, direction. These findings were replicated in Experiment 2, in which musically untrained listeners rated perceived distance of key change. In addition, the directional asymmetry found for four-voice harmony also was found for individual bass voices. The evidence suggests that harmony and melody operate somewhat independently in the implication of key structure. Difficulties for a strictly hierarchical model of perceived musical pitch structure are discussed and a partially hierarchical model is considered.

Abstract:
The tendency for languages to use harmonic word order patterns—orders that place heads in a consistent position with respect to modifiers or other dependents—has been noted since the 1960s. As with many other statistical typological tendencies, there has been debate regarding whether harmony reflects properties of human cognition or forces external to it. Recent research using laboratory language learning has shown that children and adults find harmonic patterns easier to learn than nonharmonic patterns (Culbertson & Newport, 2015 ; Culbertson, Smolensky, & Legendre, 2012 ). This supports a link between learning and typological frequency: if harmonic patterns are easier to learn, while nonharmonic patterns are more likely to be targets of change, then, all things equal, harmonic patterns will be more frequent in the world’s languages. However, these previous studies relied on variation in the input as a mechanism for change in the lab; learners were exposed to variable word order, allowing them to shift the frequencies of different orders so that harmonic patterns became more frequent. Here we teach adult and child learners languages that are consistently nonharmonic, with no variation. While adults perfectly maintain these consistently nonharmonic patterns, young child learners innovate novel orders, changing nonharmonic patterns into harmonic ones.

Abstract:
The Jews and Samaria involved in claiming one another's descendants of Abraham so that the dispute from the background of multicultural interests had an impact on the harmony of the two nations. During the intertestamental situation the upheaval still occurred. Historical studies of the feud that occurred during the intertestamental period also brought the message of harmony to trigger all the descendants of Jews and Samaritans to continue to be in hatred. That is what happened in Indonesia, there were many tribal, religious and customs sentiments which were contested so that the harmony of the plural society was tarnished. But learning from Jesus that brought change changed paradigms and teachings to love one another and live in harmony.

Gonitzke, Markus. "Mechanisms of harmony and the ordering of word order : consistencies and inconsistencies in language change and acquisition." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2007. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2405/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is based on the learning of word-orders in a cross-lingUistic and historic perspective. In linguistics, a certain hannony is expected in word order. X-bars of a language are supposed to be right-branched or left-branched. So, a language, which is right-branched has its head usually first, and a language, which is left-branched has its head usually last. In the generative framework, linguists argue that when a child encounters a structure where the head is to the right, she will assume that the whole language is constructed this way. Cognitive scientists like Christiansen argue that inconsistencies, that means a mixture of right- and left- branching are more difficult to learn because of recursive embeddings, and thus inconsistencies should simply die out or never come into existence in the first place. Greenberg established language universals after having considered forty languages. These universals would show consistencies in an X-bar branching, but Greenberg also cited exceptions and spoke of statistical universals. We are interested in these inconsistencies. If they are really more difficult to learn, why do they evolve in the first place and why are they often quite consistent in language evolution, i.e. they do not die out. Historical linguistics often argue that languages tend to develop from one consistent language via a transitional one and then develop again towards a consistent language. Inconsistent structures exist in most languages although there is a statistical trend towards consistencies. So, how do languages change and what makes persons learn at one stage a language differently and what are the mechanisms involved in learning that we can see as an end-result in language change. We will examine some of these phenomena, when we discuss· language change in Romance, the introduction of postpositions in Gennan, and the role of the infinite verb in Gennan and in Old English. Experimental work has been done for the frontability of Gennan particles, which is closely linked to the introduction of postpositions. We did an experiment in English language for the role of the infinite verb in verb-final languages such as Gennan and replicated this experiment in French because of its richer verb morphology because this gives us a greater distinction between finite and infinite verbs. An SRN-simulation on the role of the infinite verb supports the experiments.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we are studying the issue of transformational leadership in Chinese context, which is subjected to social science category. The reason why we concentrate on this research issue is based on the limited available references of Chinese transformational leadership, on our personal interests of transformational leadership and on the rather interesting and mysterious Chinese context covering the influence of globalization, digitalization and so forth. At the same time, we will focus on two major research questions, what leaders and followers’ expectations are during transformation in Chinese companies and what skills and abilities Chinese transformational leaders need in practice.Since we have ascertained the research issue and questions, the methodology of grounded theory and relevant literatures of organizational change, full range of leadership model, followership, and skill approach laid the solid foundation for our further data collection and data analysis. And the way of interviewing and questionnaire as specific methods of data collection played a crucial role in gathering empirical data, which gives contributions to theory development for our research.Through collecting and analyzing data, we constructed our theory of Chinese transformational leadership. For improving transformation performance in Chinese companies, transformational leaders is required to take both leaders and followers’ expectations into consideration and to lead the transformation with effective leadership skills and abilities. In addition, we found that there is a new implication of transformational followership for readers and a comparatively vague concept of trust in transformation process in Chinese companies for further study.

Abstract:
During speech perception, listeners are biased by a great number of factors, including cognitive limitations such as memory and attention and linguistic limitations such as their native language. This thesis focuses on two of these factors: processing bias during word recognition, and learning bias during the transmission process. These factors are combinatorial and can, over time, affect the way languages evolve. In the first part of this thesis, we focus on the process of word recognition. Previous research has established the importance of phonological features (e.g., voicing or place of articulation) during speech processing, but little is known about their weight relative to one another, and how this influences listeners' ability to recognize words. We tested French participants on their ability to recognize mispronounced words and found that the manner and place features were more important than the voicing feature. We then explored two sources of this asymmetry and found that listeners were biased both by bottom-up acoustic perception (manner contrasts are easier to perceive because of their acoustic distance compared to the other features) and top-down lexical knowledge (the place feature is used more in the French lexicon than the other two features). We suggest that these two sources of bias coalesce during the word recognition process to influence listeners. In the second part of this thesis, we turn to the question of bias during the learning process. It has been suggested that language learners may be biased towards the learning of certain phonological patterns because of phonetic knowledge they have. This in turn can explain why certain patterns are recurrent in the typology while others remain rare or unattested. Specifically, we explored the role of learning bias on the acquisition of the typologically common rule of vowel harmony compared to the unattested (but logically equivalent) rule of vowel disharmony. We found that in both perception and production, there was evidence of a learning bias, and using a simulated iterated learning model, showed how even a small bias favoring one pattern over the other could influence the linguistic typology over time, thus explaining (in part) the prevalence of harmonic systems. We additionally explored the role of sleep on memory consolidation and showed evidence that the common pattern benefits from consolidation that the unattested pattern does not, a factor that may also contribute to the typological asymmetry. Overall, this thesis considers a few of the wide-ranging sources of bias in the individual and discusses how these influences can over time shape linguistic systems. We demonstrate the dynamic and complicated nature of speech processing (both in perception and learning) and open the door for future research to explore in finer detail just how these different sources of bias are weighted relative to one another

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if preschool children, specifically three- and four-year olds, were able to demonstrate recognition of chord changes and identify implied tonic-dominant chord changes as a result of age-appropriate instruction focusing on harmony. Sixteen preschool children (7, three-year-olds; 9, four-year-olds) were given 10, 15-minute lessons that consisted of activities designed to enhance their awareness of harmony. Following instruction, students were given a test that measured their ability to recognize chord changes with regular and irregular harmonic rhythm. Furthermore, subjects were asked to demonstrate audiation of the implied harmony in three unaccompanied melodies by performing chord changes on an electronic keyboard. Results indicated that preschool children (94%) could recognize tonic-dominant chord changes, especially when they occurred in a regular harmonic rhythm. A majority of students (69%) also showed mastery when chords were played in an irregular harmonic rhythm. Students were unable to demonstrate mastery in any of the audiation tasks. Following the 10-week treatment, eight of the original subjects continued for an additional 10 sessions. Instructional and testing procedures remained the same. The scores from the 10- and 20-week tests were compared using a repeated-measures ANOVA. Students showed significant improvement in their ability to recognize chord changes that were played in an irregular harmonic rhythm. A moderate correlation was found to exist between age and this same task.

Abstract:
Satellites provide humanity with data to infer properties of the earth that were impossible a century ago. Humanity can now easily monitor the amount of ice found on the polar caps, the size of forests and deserts, the earth’s atmosphere, the seasonal variation on land and in the oceans and the surface temperature of the earth. In this thesis, new hypertemporal techniques are proposed for the settlement detection problem in South Africa. The hypertemporal techniques are applied to study areas in the Gauteng and Limpopo provinces of South Africa. To be more specific, new sequential (windowless) and non-sequential hypertemporal techniques are implemented. The time-series employed by the new hypertemporal techniques are obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor, which is on board the earth observations satellites Aqua and Terra. One MODIS dataset is constructed for each province. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) [1] that uses a novel noise-harmonic feature set is implemented to detect existing human settlements. The noise-harmonic feature set is a non-sequential hypertemporal feature set and is constructed by using the Coloured Simple Harmonic Oscillator (CSHO) [2]. The CSHO consists of a Simple Harmonic Oscillator (SHO) [3], which is superimposed on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process [4]. The noise-harmonic feature set is an extension of the classic harmonic feature set [5]. The classic harmonic feature set consists of a mean and a seasonal component. For the case studies in this thesis, it is observed that the noise-harmonic feature set not only extends the harmonic feature set, but also improves on its classification capability. The Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) algorithm was developed by Page in 1954 [6]. In its original form it is a sequential (windowless) hypertemporal change detection technique. Windowed versions of the algorithm have been applied in a remote sensing context. In this thesis CUSUM is used in its original form to detect settlement expansion in South Africa and is benchmarked against the classic band differencing change detection approach of Lunetta et al., which was developed in 2006 [7]. In the case of the Gauteng study area, the CUSUM algorithm outperformed the band differencing technique. The exact opposite behaviour was seen in the case of the Limpopo dataset. Sequential hypertemporal techniques are data-intensive and an inductive MODIS simulator was therefore also developed (to augment datasets). The proposed simulator is also based on the CSHO. Two case studies showed that the proposed inductive simulator accurately replicates the temporal dynamics and spectral dependencies found in MODIS data.

Abstract:
Conjugated polymers are promising candidates for applications in all kinds of organic optoelectronic devices: OLEDs, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic cells. The main goal of this work was to investigate transport features of photogenerated electrical charge in pi-conjugated polymers by means of novel technique based on time-resolved electric field-induced second harmonic generation (TREFISH). TREFISH measurement setup was implemented in the laboratory of Molecular compounds physics, and applicability of the method has been verified. Measurements were performed on three different model polymers: methyl substituted ladder-type poly(para-phenylene) (MeLPPP), poly(fluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) and poly(spirobifluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (PSF-BT), having different morphological and chemical structure. It has been found that motion of photogenerated charge carriers in π-conjugated polymer films experiences rapid dynamics after excitation. Different time domains of charge transport were distinguished. Initial fast transport of photogenerated charge carriers corresponds to the carrier motion along the single polymer chain or conjugated segment of the polymer chain. Slowest carrier motion phase is well described by the stochastic drift, which is attributed to interchain jumps and determines the macroscopic equilibrium mobility. Thus, the equilibrium mobility value is not applicable to the transport on nanometer scale up to tens of nanometers... [to full text]

Abstract:
AbstractThe Colombian Pacific region is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world, but several anthropic pressures threaten its ecosystems and the ethnic groups who live there. Since the colonial era, the region has experienced two different key strategies of landscape appropriation: (1) diversification of activities in the landscape; and (2) specialisation focusing on a few landscape products. These two strategies fall at opposite ends of a modified continuum over time, including a range of intermediate situations that combine elements of the diversified and specialised strategies. The first strategy is characteristic of Afro-descendant communities, based on harmony with nature and favoring human well-being, while providing multiple ecosystem services and cultural or spiritual values. In this context, this chapter reviews the relationship of Afro-descendants with their environment in the Colombian Pacific region, taking as an example the San Marcos locality. Through interviews with key informants and participant observation, we investigate the productive and extractive practices in San Marcos. Results show that the appropriation strategy combines different sources of income. This denotes a great local ecological knowledge geared to maintenance of biodiversity. Despite Law 70 (1993) stipulating Afro-descendant communities to have guaranteed autonomy and the right to collectively manage their ancestral lands, this socio-ecological production landscape is endangered due to pressures from the dominant society towards conversion to a specialised strategy. Finally, we also analyse “transformative change” in the context of governance of San Marcos. Such change could guide a profound transformation in conservation strategies based on a fundamental reorientation of human values.

Abstract:
The research discusses a conceptual approach and explanatory factors for political change, as political change, especially in the Arab case, is a concept that is still shrouded in a lot of ambiguity, through a descriptive and analytical methodology for this concept, due to its overlap with many concepts at the level of understanding and practice. In terms of the transformations that the political structures in society may undergo, or the nature of political processes and interactions between political forces, with a desire for partial change (reform), or comprehensive change of the whole system, So that the power and influence are redistributed within the state, and the transition from an authoritarian situation to a democratic one, where the concept of political change is determined based on the characteristic of this change, and this concept has also been linked to synonymous concepts such as political modernization and reform. Moreover, political change requires a set of foundations, rules and factors that the forces of change seek, in addition to employing change approaches that often come as a natural product of the thinking and principles of the forces seeking change, strategies for change, and the nature of the conditions of the stage in managing this process, that the intellectual awareness that forms the basis of the process Change at the level of the existing reality, and the alternative reality towards changing political structures in a way that will affect the centers of power in society, which requires harmony with the heritage background and cultural structure of the society, which necessitates the formation of a unified identity for the majority of citizens, meaning reaching a common vision that includes the largest possible number of supporters within the society.

Abstract:
Over the last 10 years, the airline industry has come under increasing pressure to reduce operating costs and provide an improved service in an environment of declining revenues. As a result, operators expect engine suppliers to provide more efficient and reliable products and services, with lower and more predictable operating costs. In particular, the creation of long term service agreement offerings such as Rolls-Royce TotalCare™ align the goals of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and the operator in ensuring that engines keep flying with minimal disruption at minimised cost. Whilst great strides can be made to optimise cost of ownership around existing products the real potential for quantum reductions comes when the product and service are designed in harmony. This requires a cultural shift from ‘offering a Service around an existing Product’ to ‘designing a Service and the Product that supports it’. In 2002 a programme was launched within Rolls-Royce plc to create and deploy an improved process for ensuring our new products are truly ‘Designed for Service’. This has encompassed a cultural change programme, working practice and process changes, enhanced tools and technique development and embodiment of control systems within the design change process gates. The Trent 1000 engine for the Boeing 787 is the first Rolls-Royce new product to have fully deployed ‘Design for Service’ from its earliest stages of preliminary design. The process has already driven both architectural and detailed design change. This attention to detail from the earliest stages of design is fully expected to ensure that the Trent 1000 is the lowest cost of ownership solution for the Boeing 787 aircraft. This paper discusses the elements of the process, including some of the problems and successes experienced during this initial application.

Abstract:
Even though functional characteristics and various forms can be measured directly and objectively, many designers and engineers still fail to clearly evaluate product criteria due to consumers’ subjective inputs, which change over time. To appropriately evaluate product criteria, an effective design decision making analysis is required. In this study, we propose a methodology to assure this harmony using a mobile phone product family design scenario. Customer perceived utility of design features are first gathered using a questionnaire (with more than 500 responses), and then modeled using multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT) to allow for clustering based on consumer demographics (e.g., race, gender, and age). Based on the clustering, several mobile phone models are tested for their fitness. The goal of the methodology is to determine the appropriate product family size in order to satisfy customer needs as well as reduce supply chain complexity.

Abstract:
The main proposal of the circular economy is to change the concept of "garbage" fromWaste that was structured in this project and replaced by a continuous and cyclical vision of the production, in which resources are no longer just explored and discarded and are now reused in a new Cycle. The Circular Economy encourages new management practices, creating opportunities and value for organizations in harmony with the environment. This article aims to analyze the feasibility of implementing Circular Economy methods, with an emphasis on controlling scrap disposal in the Açu Port Complex (São Joãoda Barra/RJ), bringing sustainable alternatives to Waste Management. In addition to evaluating its environmental and economic efficiency, it proposes to end the linear production process and reinsert waste into the production cycle to minimize environmental treatment and the extraction of raw materials. The investigation will start through specific exploratory research, bringing as a consequence, possible economic alternatives for the reuse of these materials. The research is also classified as descriptiveand case study since a survey of real information on waste management in the Açu Port Complex will be carried out. It is hoped through this research to demonstrate how the circular economy can contribute to economic, social, and environmental development when used in an interdisciplinary way by productive activities.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the way of successful inclusion of heritage in the up-to-date sustainable tourism by recognising, professional evaluation and appropriate interpretation. The text is based on the presentation and analysis of healing methods applied by natural healer Arnold Rikli who founded healing tourism in Bled in the 19th century. Nowadays, his methods are very relevant again and although being an excellent basis for the creation of unique and authentic experiences, connected with nature, they are not utilised enough. The paper shows how and to what extent Rikli's heritage of natural healing can be an opportunity and basis for the creation of new authentic, sustainable and personalised tourist experiences, based on the harmony with the natural resources in Bled. The decisive factors, affecting the selection of a tourist destination, are authenticity and versatility of the tourist offer, which means that guests are looking for unique experiences that Rikli's story and his healing methods, based on strengthening the immune system in a natural way with the help of natural methods and elements such as water, air and light, definitely are in Bled.
