Abstract:
The number of North American art museums with a presence on the internet has more than doubled since 1999. This is not surprising given the power of new media to transform the experiences that museum visitors have with our cultural institutions. Every year museums attract thousands of visitors to view, both in person and online, their specialized collections and unique exhibitions. Developing in tandem with these resources and largely unfamiliar to the general, museum-going public, the libraries and archives of these institutions have contributed to the research mission, educational programming, documentary history, and curatorial functions of museums in countless ways. In addition, especially for art historians and other scholars, museum libraries and archives have been and continue to be increasingly valuable for primary and secondary sources, including artists’ correspondence, diaries, sketches, hard-to-find monographs, exhibition records and sales catalogues. What is unclear, however, is the extent to which resources in art museum libraries and archives are being documented, preserved and made accessible online. This research is perhaps the first of its kind to evaluate, on a small scale and during a span of twelve years, the web presence of 22 North American art museum libraries and archives.

Abstract In September 1928, just after the publication of the report of the royal commission on National Museums and Galleries, the art dealer Sir Joseph Duveen wrote to his good friend Edgar Vincent, Viscount D'Abernon, who had chaired the commission, offering to pay for a new gallery at the British Museum to house the Parthenon, or Elgin, marbles. The new gallery cost over £100,000 and took ten years to complete, during which time Duveen worked hard to impose his vision of a new gallery – a vision often at odds with that of the Museum establishment, and one that generated controversy, including the unauthorized cleaning of the marbles.

This paper discusses the role that museums and art institutions have in recent years played in international relations, and their contribution to the concept of soft power, coined by Joseph Nye; referring to a country’s ability to persuade rather than coerce through elements of ‘hard’ power such as the threat of a strong military (Nye 2004). Using as examples the exchanges of the Cyrus Cylinder between Iran and the British Museum, and the loan of Picasso’s Buste de Femme (1943) from the Dutch Van Abbemuseum to the International Academy of Art Palestine, the paper argues that through their role as ‘national expressions of identity’ and ‘memory institutions’, museums and art institutions are able to make a positive contribution to international relations by engendering mutual respect and understanding in ways that other forms of dialogue may be unable to. As soft power is an area that still requires significant research, this paper aims to contribute observations and case studies that may affirm its influence.Key Words: cultural diplomacy, museums, soft power, international relations, cultural exchange

Abstract:
Following an introductory essay, six short contributions by academics and museum curators in the United States (US) and Europe tackle the current state and future of Pre-Columbian visual culture studies. They explore the field’s impressive growth in this century, as well as some of the dangers it currently faces as a result of that growth. Several trace its present state to its origins and the part played by early Mexican and US nationalism, the popularity of world’s fairs, and the civil rights movement, among other factors. Also considered are problems inherent in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century separation of the preconquest past from the newly labeled colonial period, as well as the concurrent embrace of the term “Pre-Columbian.” Other essays take a hard look at the present and future relation of art history to archaeology and cross-disciplinary studies within the field, which is defined in part by their dependence on, or skepticism regarding, iconography. Whereas academics wrestle in these essays with the implications of a declining job market, museum curators struggle with limited funding. Nonetheless, possible new strategies and opportunities for the future are proposed, including engagement with issues posed by the rising interest in decoloniality and global indigeneity. RESUMEN Luego de un ensayo introductorio, seis contribuciones cortas de académicos y conservadores de museos en los Estados Unidos y Europa abordan el estado actual y el futuro de los estudios de cultura visual precolombina. Se explora el impresionante crecimiento del campo en este siglo, así como algunos de los peligros que enfrenta actualmente como resultado de este crecimiento. Varios colaboradores trazan el estado actual del campo hasta sus orígenes y notan la influencia en él de las primeras manifestaciones de los nacionalismos de México y los Estados Unidos, la popularidad de las ferias mundiales y el Movimiento por los derechos civiles, entre otros factores. También se consideran los problemas inherentes a la separación entre el pasado precolombino y el llamado período colonial que se establecía entre fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, así como la aceptación simultánea del término “precolombino”. Otros ensayos analizan detenidamente la relación presente y futura de la historia del arte con la arqueología y los estudios interdisciplinarios dentro del campo, que se define en parte por su dependencia o escepticismo con respecto a la iconografía. Mientras que los académicos discuten en estos ensayos las implicaciones de un mercado de trabajo decreciente, los curadores de museos abordan las restricciones presupuestarias. No obstante, se proponen posibles nuevas estrategias y oportunidades para el futuro, como la participación futura en cuestiones planteadas por el creciente interés en la descolonialidad y la indigeneidad global. RESUMO Após um ensaio introdutório, seis curtas contribuições de acadêmicos e curadores de museus nos Estados Unidos e na Europa abordam o estado atual e o futuro dos estudos da cultura visual pré-colombiana. O impressionante crescimento do campo neste século, bem como alguns dos perigos que atualmente enfrenta como resultado desse crescimento, são explorados. Diversos colaboradores traçam o estado atual do campo até suas origens e o papel desempenhado pelo nacionalismo inicial do México e dos Estados Unidos, a popularidade das feiras mundiais e o Movimento dos direitos civis, entre outros fatores. Também são considerados os problemas inerentes à separação, no final do século XIX e início do século XX, entre o passado pré-conquista e o recém-rotulado período colonial, bem como a aderência simultânea ao termo “pré-colombiano”. Outros ensaios dedicam olhar atento à relação presente e futura da história da arte com a arqueologia e estudos interdisciplinares dentro do campo, que é definida em parte por sua dependência ou ceticismo em relação à iconografia. Enquanto os acadêmicos lutam nesses ensaios com as implicações de um mercado de trabalho em declínio, os curadores de museus lutam com recursos limitados. No entanto, são propostas possíveis novas estratégias e oportunidades para o futuro, incluindo o envolvimento futuro com questões levantadas pelo crescente interesse na decolonialidade e na indigeneidade global.

Abstract:
Traditional museum space design is generally limited to cost and engineering volume, and follows the conventional unified design process of large-scale space fixtures, isolating the design contents of space hard decoration and internal soft decoration and display, and even flood lighting intelligence, lacking unified overall consideration and response. The disjointed design in the early stage led to a large number of space contradictions in the exhibition placement and actual use and operation after the completion of the hard installation and delivery. The intervention of new media art changes the traditional exhibition form. At the same time, the traditional public space design process also begins to change because the exhibition activity of new media art forms has many requirements such as technology, process, material, sound and light, and even environmental psychological effect on the space form and scale. Based on case studies of different characteristics, this paper summarizes the systematic design methods of new media art's involvement in the hard installation of museum exhibition space from three dimensions of spatial layout, spatial form and spatial scope.

Abstract:
This Bachelor´s thesis examines Bror Marklunds (1907-1977) workshop, as a museum created around one person and how a museum creates authenticity in a studio museum like this one. Marklund was one of the most merited sculptor artists in Sweden around the 40´s, until the 70´s. In the workshop, that arose through a donation from the artist himself before he passed in 1977, and a reception from the municipality, the curatorial approach has been my main focus. The thesis also contains a discussion about the commitment that the municipality of Örnsköldsvik takes in conjunction with the donation. Who has the right of deciding about who will be shown to the public as our cultural heritage? In this situation it´s a decision made of both the artist himself and the municipality. The material consists of the workshop and all the interior as it´s organised today and of archive photographs and texts. The material has been examined with the method observation to analyse how the gallery space is staged today. Photographs from the workshop´s early days, placed on the original location, and from the gallery space as it was staged at the opening in 1980 has been compered with the staging of today. The workshop has gone through a transformation from being a working space of an artist to a gallery room with the aim to show the artists development phases and working methods. So, what happens with the authenticity of a museum of a one-person over time? From what curatorial decisions does the visitor get the feeling of authenticity in a one-person museum? The thesis examines why and how we keep the artist alive through his works. The question remains – Does he exist among his sculptures?

This Thesis explores the question; Is a children’s museum a playground or a museum? Through research and visits to children’s museums I feel that many are playgrounds. They are also visually stimulating to children, but not to the guardians who bring them there. In most cases the exhibits are permanent and there is little change to the atmosphere of the space on a regular basis. An old warehouse located on North Boulevard was chosen to house this project idea of a children’s art museum. The scenario is that The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Children’s Museum of Richmond would have a joint venture in creating a the Children’s Art Museum of Richmond. Thebuildings’ close proximity to these two museums make it an excellent choice for both institutions. There are interactive changing exhibits, a studio that continues the learning experience from the exhibit, and a gallery to display artwork that was created in the studio spaces. Through these three core spaces I hope to create a continuous interactive learning experience in this children’s art museum.

The following internship report is an investigation of the organizational structure of the Mobile Museum of Art from January 2013 to August 2013. During the internship, I was able to work in several different capacities, from volunteer coordinating, to marketing, to programming. This report analyzes several aspects within these fields, including the organization’s brand, marketing strategies, and educational structure as they shift under new management. Based on my observations, I will offer recommendations for programming, marketing, and volunteer management, and compare the current structure to best practices of other museums and similar organizations. Through this extensive analysis I will also offer thoughts about the future of this local arts environment.

Abstract:
This project investigates the relations light and shape in a museum of graphic arts. The nature of daylight determines the meeting between the building and the sky. The shape of the building, therefore, distributes the light thus facilitating the meeting between the visitor and the art. The best light in art museums is neutral and avoids sharp contrasts and shadows that would otherwise detract from the experience in the museum. I studied how different shapes influence light and found a rounded shape to produce the best results, distributing light evenly thus avoiding distracting contrasts. Rounded shapes from a quadratic base with straight walls optimize the distribution of the light, facilitating the interaction between the visitor and the art.  The building of the museum is part of a “light-game” with a quadratic base. The conspicuous shapes distribute the light, guiding the visitor in the world of art. In the north, the building has a density next to the car park while it interacts with the shapes producing an intimate small-scale feeling in the south.
Projektet undersöker relationen mellan ljus och form i ett museum för grafisk konst. Ljusets natur bestämmer samspelet mellan byggnad och himmel. Byggnadens form fördelar ljuset och underlättar besökarens mötte med konsten. I konsthallar är det kontrastfria, neutrala ljuset det bästa; skuggspel och ljusförändringar stör upplevelsen. I mina studier fann jag att en välvd form fördelade ljuset jämt, störande kontraster undviks. Den välvda formen fördelade ljuset på bästa sätt och uppfyllde kravet som konsten ställer inför mötet med betraktaren. Den välva formen med en kvadratisk bas i botten och raka neutrala väggar.Byggnaden blir ett spel där formerna framstår mot en grid-baserad bas (VAD ÄR GRID-BASERAD?). Det tydliga formspråket är anslående och vägleder besökaren. Byggnaden har en ”täthet” i norr, vid bilparkeringen, och omgivningen utanför samspelar med formerna ner mot södra sidan och skapar tillsammans en småskalighet. Byggnaden går från att ha en hög densitet i norr mot bilparkeringen, till att spela med ute och inne mot dess södra sida för att även passa in i den småskaliga omgivningen.

El objetivo de esta comunicación es presentar algunas prácticas feministas que han hecho uso de las tecnologías en los museos de México, así como reflexionar en torno a la soberanía digital, los derechos culturales que se ejercen en las redes sociales y si estos se inscriben en la “internet feminista” desde los museos.En los últimos años, los movimientos feministas en México han tomado relevancia política, en ámbitos públicos y de intervención social. Muchas de ellas, han sido juzgadas negativamente por hacer uso de bienes culturales, lo cual ha desencadenado opiniones polarizadas.Si bien, la postura de los museos mexicanos a este respecto es reservada, existe una apertura a prácticas con perspectiva de género, desde sus investigaciones, oferta cultural y exposiciones temporales. Con las medidas de confinamiento derivadas del COVID-19, quedó claro que las estrategias de los museos para continuar sus actividades, se centraron y volcaron en las Redes Sociales y sus páginas web. Asimismo, se lograron continuar no solo con las prácticas con perspectiva de género que incipientemente se realizaban en estos espacios, si no que se incrementaron los contenidos de corte feminista y de acción política cultural.Entre los ejemplos más notables estuvieron la apertura de nuevos espacios virtuales como lo hizo el Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, con su Instagram Brillantinas MUAC, en donde se publican diversos materiales feministas desde la cultura y se ínsita al diálogo y la profundización de varios temas con perspectiva de género.Por otro lado, la actividad digital y cultural a raíz de la Conmemoración del Día Internacional para la Eliminación de las Violencias contra las Mujeres, fue adoptada por una gran cantidad de museos desde privados hasta estatales, ya sea con una mención al tema o una actividad o serie de actividades al respecto. Fue un ejercicio que trascendió a los 10 días de activismo y que obtuvo una interesante respuesta tanto negativa como positiva dentro de los públicos.Finalmente, uno de los ejercicios más interesantes que se lograron a pesar de las dificultades por la situación sanitaria, fue la iniciativa “Laboratoria: Mujeres en el Museo” lanzada por el Observatorio Raquel Padilla del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, que por medio de diversas herramientas digitales, se pudo llevar a cabo un ejercicio feminista y de soberanía digital en la elaboración de prototipos con perspectiva de género y para la prevención de las violencias contra las mujeres.-------- The objective of this communication is to present some feminist practices that have made use of technologies in museums in Mexico, as well as to reflect on digital sovereignty, the cultural rights that are exercised in social networks and if they are registered in the "Feminist internet" from museums.In recent years, feminist movements in Mexico have taken on political relevance, in public spheres and social intervention. Many of them have been judged negatively for making use of cultural property, which has triggered polarized opinions.Although the position of Mexican museums in this regard is reserved, there is an openness to practices with a gender perspective, from their research, cultural offerings and temporary exhibitions. With the confinement measures derived from COVID-19, it was clear that the museums' strategies to continue their activities were focused and turned over to Social Networks and their web pages. Resumen La ponencia consiste en compartir y analizar en profundidad el quehacer comunicativo del Museo de Cultura Popular de la Escuela de Historia de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, específicamente a partir de la iniciativa de diálogo virtual denominada “#elmuseodialoga”, la cual ha potencializado la presencia del museo en las redes sociales académicas y ha contribuido a potenciar enlaces dialógicos con académicos, dentro y fuera de la universidad, así como con actores de la sociedad civil en su conjunto. Esta iniciativa surgió ante el desafío presentado por la pandemia COVID 19 con el fin de potencializar acciones de extensión y difusión de carácter virtual por medio del uso de las redes sociales con las que cuenta el museo, por ejemplo, el canal de youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter y linkedin. Para ello, académicos que laboran en el museo y estudiantes de la Escuela de Historia, han aunado esfuerzos en pro de generar una alternativa de comunicación acorde a los nuevos desafíos de la virtualidad. En ese sentido, se ha potenciado a lo largo de poco más de un año, cuarenta ediciones de diálogo virtual, contando con invitados tanto nacionales, como internacionales, esto último dentro de la modalidad #elmuseodialogainternacional. El espacio de diálogo cuenta con tres ejes trasversales que permiten cubrir un amplio espectro de posibilidades temáticas: a) Cultura popular, historia, arte y patrimonio, b) difusión del quehacer académico y c) temas de actualidad nacional e internacional. En el primer eje abordamos todo lo relativo a patrimonio cultural, materia e inmaterial, tradiciones, cultores populares, arte costarricense, entre otros. A partir del segundo eje, trabajamos en difundir el aporte de investigaciones de académicos tanto de la UNA como de otras universidades nacionales e internacional, con el fin de divulgar a públicos más amplios la contribución del conocimiento producido por las universidades a la sociedad en su conjunto. En el caso del tercer eje, reforzamos la relación pasado-presente, generando espacios de lectura de la realidad nacional e internacional, abriendo también horizontes de prospectiva. Resume The presentation consists of sharing and analyzing in depth the communicative work of the Museum of Popular Culture of the School of History of the National University of Costa Rica, specifically from the virtual dialogue initiative called "#elmuseodialoga", which has potentiated the presence of the museum in academic social networks and has contributed to fostering dialogic links with academics, inside and outside the university, as well as with actors from civil society as a whole. This initiative arose in order to enhance virtual extension and dissemination actions through the use of social networks that the museum has, for example, the YouTube channel, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. To this end, academics who work at the museum and students from the School of History have joined forces to generate a communication alternative in line with the new challenges of virtuality. In this sense, forty editions of virtual dialogue have been promoted over the course of just over a year, with both national and international guests, the latter within the #elmuseodialogainternacional modality. The dialogue space has three transversal axes that allow covering a wide spectrum of thematic possibilities: a) Popular culture, history, art and heritage, b) dissemination of academic work and c) current national and international issues. In the first axis we address everything related to cultural heritage, material and immaterial, traditions, popular cultists, Costa Rican art, among others. From the second axis, we work on disseminating the contribution of academic research from both the UNA and other national and international universities, in order to disclose to wider audiences, the contribution of the knowledge produced by universities to society as a whole. In the case of the third axis, we reinforce the past-present relationship, generating spaces for reading the national and international reality, also opening prospective horizons. Abstract:
Application of 3D printing to works of art is not new. However, with the advent of larger and more affordable 3D printers, it is possible to fabricate works of art including statues, sculptures, and architectural structures from biomimicked composites. Made of hard ceramic and soft polymer with or without reinforcement, these composites have shown to be much tougher than their monolithic counterparts. The use of biomimicking will increase the durability and strength of such artifacts. In this study, a newly developed architectural 3D printer is used to create works of art using concrete, with and without reinforcement fibers. The challenge that face creating tough artistic display structures include durability, hardness and resistance to impact. To determine the right combination of hard ceramic and soft polymer, a series of experiments were conducted. These included the fabrication of biomimicked composites with different materials and testing them for fracture energy as well as maximum strength. Earlier published works demonstrate the effect of various parameters such as type of ceramic layer, layering, fiber reinforcement type, fiber length, and fiber loading. In this paper, the effect of hard layer thickness and the type of polymer on the mechanical properties of the biomimicked composites was investigated. Preliminary results show the highest fracture energy for composites made with concrete bonding adhesive (CBA) and Quikrete™ concrete, with a spacing of 5mm. The application of 3D printing to the educational activities of a museum in Newport KY will be explained and its implication in relation with civic engagement activities of Northern Kentucky University will be elucidated.

Abstract:
The research is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of mediatization of art on the example of virtual museums. Main objective of the study is to give communication characteristics of the mediatized socio-cultural institutions. The subject of the research is forms, directions and communication features of virtual museums. Methodology. In the process of study, the method of communication analysis, which allowed to identify and characterize the main factors of the museum’s functioning as a communication system, was used. Among them, special emphasis is put on receptive and metalinguistic functions. Results / findings and conclusions. The need to be competitive in the information space determines the gradual transformation of socio-cultural institutions into mass media, which is reflected in the content and forms of dialogue with recipients. When cultural institutions begin to function as media, they take on the features of media structures that create a communication environment localized by the functions of communicators and audience expectations. Museums function in such a way that along with the real art space they form a virtual space, which puts the recipients into the reality of the exhibitions based on the principle of immersion. Mediaization of art on the example of virtual museum institutions allows us to talk about: expanding of the perceptual capabilities of the audience; improvement of the exposition function of mediatized museums with the help of Internet technologies; interactivity of museum expositions; providing broad contextual background knowledge necessary for a deep understanding of the content of works of art; the possibility to have a delayed viewing of works of art; absence of thematic, time and space restrictions; possibility of communication between visitors; a huge target audience. Significance. The study of the mediatized forms of communication between museums and visitors as well as the directions of their transformation into media are certainly of interest to the scientific field of “Social Communications”.
