KALÍŠKOVÁ, Kateřina. ""Tragic Mualttoes" in Black Women´s Novels from the 19th Century: Hannah Crafts, Harriet Wilson, Julia Collins and Frances Harper." Master's thesis, 2010. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-50169.

Full text
Abstract:
This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of the conditions of lighter-skin black women of mixed ancestry, both free and enslaved, before and after emancipation, as related in four novels written by the 19th century African-American novelists: Hannah Crafts, Harriet E. Wilson, Julia C. Collins and Frances E. W. Harper. The work especially deals with the main motifs appearing in their novels, such as the interracial relationships, variations of racism toward mulattos, the problematics of ``passing{\crqq} for white and the issue of ``racial uplift{\crqq}. The analyses of the novels themselves are preceded by a survey of the authors´ lives since they drew inspiration from their own personal experience. This is followed by a brief conclusive comparison of their novels.

Rosůlková, Magdaléna. "Reprezentace genderu na fotografiích nové vlny female gaze." Master's thesis, 2020. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-435554.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this work is the qualitative analysis of the new wave of female gaze photographers with a comparison of the female gaze pioneers. For this purpose, there were used photographs by Arvida Byström, Petra Collins, Harley Weir, and Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Corinne Day, which were published in fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, i-D, Dazed, and Vice. The theoretical part examined how female identity has been shaped by western culture and dominant ideology, and how patriarchy paradigm has influenced the visual representation of women in art, pop culture, and advertisement. It is shown through key feminist concepts including Simone De Beauvoir, Betty Friedan, Judith Butler, John Berger, Laura Mulvey, theory of young girl, gagafeminism, and xenofeminism. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to social semiotics analysis of each photograph and the results of this research, which show changes of topics in the female gaze content and the shift to social media-related topics and the virtual representation of women. The work could enrich further research in the field of feminist aesthetics, fashion journalism, photography, advertisement, and social media.

Abstract:
In the fall of 1963, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) took steps to become more directly involved in the civil rights movement when Dorothy Height travelled with a small interracial team of elite clubwomen to investigate the abuse of activist children imprisoned in Selma. The team moved behind the scenes and tried to establish ties with local black and white women to better support the movement. After the Selma trip, white team member Polly Cowan developed plans to bring additional teams of interracial middle and upper class women down to the South. At a March 1964 Atlanta meeting of black and white southern clubwomen, Clarie Collins Harvey, a black businesswoman and clubwoman from Jackson, Mississippi, invited Cowan and the NCNW to provide support to civil rights efforts in Jackson. Her invitation led Cowan and Height to develop plans for Wednesdays in Mississippi to help with Freedom Summer.

Abstract:
Chapter 11 explores the postdisaster impacts of Hurricane Harvey and Houston/Harris County’s continuing efforts to recover since the storm hit in 2017. Umair A. Shah describes the dynamics of a diverse county and the public health response to Hurricane Harvey’s devastation. Julie B. Kaplow highlights the extensive outreach and services that have been developed for children, emphasizing the unique needs of young people whose lives are shaped by disasters. Bakeyah S. Nelson explains why Houston serves as a cautionary tale for what can happen when natural disasters and human-driven environmental disasters collide. And Renee Wizig-Barrios describes how the Greater Houston Community Foundation, supported by an outpouring of contributions after the storm, put a priority on helping at-risk populations. Can the Houston/Harris County experience serve as a model for how other communities can move forward after disasters?

Bai, Xiao-Dong, Yun-Peng Zhao, Guo-Hai Dong, and Chun-Wei Bi. "Investigation on the Probabilistic Distribution of the Stress Range of Net Cage Floater of Fish Cage for Fatigue Life Prediction." In ASME 2018 37th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2018-78760.

Full text
Abstract:
The failure risk of fish cages has increased in the harsher environmental conditions as fish farms have moved into the open sea in recent years. Fatigue failure is an important limit state for the floating system of the fish cage under the long-term action of waves. This study is presented to investigate the applicable probability density function for estimating fatigue life of the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floating collars. The stress response of the floating collars system in random wave is firstly analyzed based on the finite element analysis combined with a hydrodynamic model. The stress histories of floating collars under each sea state are counted using the rainflow method as a benchmark for fatigue frequency domain analysis. The distribution of stress range was fitted by various probability density functions including Rayleigh, Weibull, Gamma and generalized extreme value (GEV) distributions. Comparisons of the estimated fatigue life using different distributions with rainflow statistic results were performed. Results indicate fatigue estimation based on the GEV and Gamma distributions by removing the negligible low stress range give much more accurate fatigue damage results of the short-term stress range distribution. While Weibull distribution overestimates the fatigue lifetime of the floating collar based on the short-term distribution of stress ranges.
