Abstract:
MAY an English court, having jurisdiction under the Brussels or Lugano Convention, decline to entertain proceedings on the basis that a court in a non-Contracting State is the forum conveniens? Many would doubt it-can national law oust jurisdiction conferred by the Conventions? But the Court of Appeal famously decided otherwise in Re Harrods (Buenos Aires) Ltd. [1992] Ch. 72. The Conventions, it concluded, are designed to harmonise the jurisdictional rules of Contracting States only to the extent necessary to facilitate the enforcement of judgments between such States, their primary concern. That objective is unaffected if a case is eventually tried in a non-Contracting State, so stays in such cases are permitted. The House of Lords in Harrods referred the point to the European Court of Justice, but the case was settled, creating uncertainty about the correct solution, yet leaving all courts but the House of Lords bound by the Court of Appeal’s decision.

Abstract:
Abstract We model of demand-led growth with endogenous adjustment of labour supply and productivity, an approach that reconciles Harrod’s warranted rate of demand growth with supply. The model delivers a range of growth paths and unemployment rates rather than a single ‘natural rate’. Theoretically, the steady-state growth path may be dynamically stable or unstable, but empirical calibration favours stability. We show analytically that if demand dynamics are stable, supply will converge to the demand-determined growth path. While a minimum unemployment rate ultimately imposes a supply constraint on growth, empirical results show that a wide range of growth rates are feasible across different demand regimes. The results explain how economies can become trapped with low growth due to weak demand or fiscal austerity and suggest policy responses to stagnant demand.

Abstract:
The article attempts to analyze unconscious cognitive empathy in Sam Harris’ discourse. Harris equates the theology of Abrahamic religions with ancient mythology. However, the expulsion of the Numinous into the sphere of the transcendent, made possible by monotheism, gave impetus to the study of nature and led to what Max Weber called the Disenchantment. This Disenchantment, firstly, led to the discrediting of ancient myths, and secondly, to the scientism of Harris and his like-minded people.

Abstract:
The present paper responds to two discussion articles previously published in Language and Dialogue 3:2 and 4:2: one by Wolfgang Teubert (“Was there a cat in the garden? Knowledge between discourse and the monadic self”), which is partly a critique of Roy Harris’ integrational epistemology (Harris 2009), and the other, itself a critical reply to Teubert, by Alison Sealey (“Cats and categories — reply to Teubert”). In this paper I adopt an integrational linguistic approach (e.g. Harris 1996, 1998) to Teubert and Sealey’s opposing philosophical views (social constructionism vs. realism), showing how their linguistic theories heavily rely on strategies of decontextualization (‘segregationism’) needed in order to cast themselves in the role of linguistic experts. Unlike the integrational linguist, who regards signs as radically indeterminate, the segregational linguist has to retain determinacy as a fundamental property of the sign — and hence the latter’s insistence that signs are ‘shared’. Both the relativist and the realist working within a segregational linguistic paradigm adhere to a semantic thesis of how words get their meanings that Harris (1980) has termed ‘surrogationalism’, i.e. the belief that words, in their function as names, ‘stand for’ things in the real world, the difference being that Teubert treats ‘reality’ as a discursive community-based construction (i.e. there is no objective reality for homo loquens), while Sealey thinks that material reality is independent of discourse and that words functioning as names of things reflect this to varying degrees.

Abstract The experience of hearing one’s own voice during the act of speaking is a form of self-awareness and self-reflection that occurs in relation to and in interaction with the flow of experience, including the experience of other selves and their voices. Self-communication is deeply implicated in and necessary for interpersonal communication (Harris 1996). And yet, it is the latter which is generally taken to be the paradigm case of human languaging. The fundamental role of self-communication is neglected in the language sciences. Starting with the important fact that we hear our own voice when we speak (Harris 1996, chap. 11), this paper examines the central role of self-communication in the emergence of the self and the self’s role in languaging.

AbstractMy starting and concluding point is theZhuangzi, at least in parts attributed to the Chinese philosopher of the same name. His view, guided by the Daoist tradition, is that language users are free to reconstruct collectively their discursive realities (for instance the notion of happiness), as discourse does not refer to the unspoken reality. While both Edda Weigand and Roy Harris accept that meanings are not fixed, I disagree with Weigand as she wants to leave behind the language sign, and with Roy Harris, as for him it is each solitary person who is creating their signs, whether they take part in discourse or not. For me, but not for them, dialogue drives discourse in the sense of a contingent evolution of ideas, while for them dialogue is driven by solitary individuals. Perhaps we all agree that the meaning of a word likehappinessis arbitrary and we are free to construct its discursive reality, the only reality that counts.

Abstract:
The focus of the thesis is translation strategies of the food items introduced in the Lithuanian and French versions of Joanne Harris’ gourmet novel Chocolat (1999). The Lithuanian translation is made by Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė (2004), while the French translation is produced by Anouk Neuhoff (2000). At the beginning, the new genre of fiction, particularly gastromance, or gourmet literature is defined as well as translation strategies of culture-specific items, specifically food, are described. In addition, the variety of translation methods examined by different scholars is introduced. The translation strategies proposed by Eirlys E. Davies (preservation and preservation as literary translation; addition and addition in the footnote; omission; globalization; localization (as specification, domestication or orthographical adaptation) as well as transformation and creation) are applied while analysing the translation of the food items in the novel. In order to highlight the significant grammatical aspects of the languages, the issues of the article usage and formation of syntactical structures are discussed. The food items are classified into two main categories: dishes and their ingredients and chocolate assortment and other types of dessert. Šio darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti valgių pavadinimų vertimo strategijas Joanne’os Harris „gurmaniško“ romano „Šokoladas“ (1999) lietuviškame ir prancūziškame vertime. Romaną lietuviškai išvertė Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė (2004), o prancūziškai - Anouk Neuhoff (2000). Darbe pristatomas naujas „gurmaniškosios“ literatūros žanras, analizuojamas kultūrinių realijų, ypač maisto terminų, vertimas. Kadangi skirtingi mokslininkai skirtingai įvardija panašias vertimo procedūras, aptariama jų įvairovė ir pasirenkamos Eirlis E. Deivis (Eirlys E. Davies) pasiūlytos strategijos. Darbe įvertinami anglų, lietuvių ir prancūzų kalbų skirtumai gramatiniame ir sintaksiniame lygmenyse: aptariama artikelių vartosena bei sintaktinių struktūrų daryba. Maisto terminai suklasifikuoti į patiekalus ir jų ingridientus bei šokolado asortimentą ir kitus desertus. Darbe siekiama nustatyti dažniausiai pastebimas valgių pavadinimų vertimo procedūras bei ištirti, ar Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė ir Anouk Neuhoff vartoja skirtingas ar panašias maisto terminų vertimo strategijas. Nustatyta, kad verčiant patiekalus bei jų ingridientus vertėjos naudoja panašias vertimo procedūras, iš kurių dažniausia literatūrinis vertimas. Skirtingai išverstų maisto terminų atvejai taip pat sutinkami: Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė verčia valgių pavadinimus į lietuvių kalbą, o Anouk Neuhoff juos perkelia nepakeistus, globalizuoja arba pritaiko kultūrinį ekvivalentą. The Master of Arts thesis “Translation of Culture-Specific Drink and Food Items in “Blackberry Wine” by Joanne Harris” presents the analysis of translation strategies applied in translating cultural realia, namely drink and food references in Milda Dyke’s Lithuanian translation of "Blackberry Wine", as well as a short analysis of the translation strategies and their function. The consideration of different translation strategies that were proposed by prominent scholars, such as Mona Baker (1992), Javier-Franco Aixelá and Eirlys E.Davies (2003) in translation studies, and the analysis of the strategies employed by the translator Milda Dyke translating the novel "Blackberry Wine" into Lithuanian are discussed in this thesis. Theoretical aspects are applied in the analytical part, taking into account the most frequent strategies employed for the translation of culture-specific drink and food entities by the translator and the comment on these choices exhibits peculiar cultural aspects. Futhermore, the ways how to handle problems related to the translation of culture-specific drink and food items from English into Lithuanian are analyzed and presented in the analytical part. Šio magistrinio darbo „Gėrimų ir valgių pavadinimų vertimas Joanne Harris romane „Gervuogių vynas” į lietuvių kalbą” tikslas yra išanalizuoti vertimo strategijų pritaikymą gėrimų ir valgių kultūriniams pavadinimams vertime iš anglų kalbos, taip pat pateikiama išsami šių vertimo strategijų ir jų atliekamų funkcijų analizė. Darbe nagrinėjama skirtingos vertimo strategijos, kurios buvo pateikiamos vertimo srityje tokių žinomų mokslininkų kaip Mona Baker (1992), Javier-Franco Aixelá, Eirlys E.Davies (2003). Be to, analizuojama vertėjos Mildos Dyke vartojamos vertimo strategijos į lietuvių kalbą. Teoriniai aspektai analizuojami praktinėje darbo dalyje, atsižvelgiant į dažniausiai vartojamų vertimo strategijų pritaikymą verčiant kultūrinius gėrimų ir valgių pavadinimus bei pastarųjų būdingas savybes verčiant į tikslinę kalbą. Praktinėje dalyje pateikiami vertimo sunkumai ir jų sprendimo būdai pritaikyti verčiant kultūrines realijas. Analizuojamos dvi pagrindinės kultūrinių gėrimų ir valgių denotatų grupės, kurias verčiant sprendžiami sudėtingi ir kartais polemiški klausimai literatūriniuose kūriniuose. Verčiant minėtas realijų grupes yra taikomos įvairios vertimo strategijos, iš kurių pabrėžiamos pačios dažniausios, veiksmingiausios. Šiame darbe yra dvi dalys: teorinė ir praktinė. This chapter announces Harris’s arrival at Covent Garden theatre. It recounts the ill-fated purchase of the theatre by four speculators in 1767 — Harris, Colman, Powell, and Rutherford — and the violent fight for control that eventually led to Harris’s triumph. This chapter explores the culmination of their dispute at the trial in the Court of Chancery, along with the factors and prejudices which influenced its outcome. Newly uncovered manuscripts are employed to recreate the arguments offered by the opposing advocates — Wedderburn and Dunning — as they focused upon the art of theatre management and the motivations of the youthfully impetuous Harris. This trial before the Lords Commissioners of the Great Seal was one staging post in Harris’s course towards Pitt’s ministry, as it forced him to confront the nature of public opinion as well as Colman’s ability to marshal it.

Jim Harris was most unusual in combining the training, techniques, and craft of a conveyance with the concerns and the learning of a philosopher. His abiding interest in ethical theory was thus strengthened by his sound grasp of thorny and frequently litigated legal problems. Harris used this experience, not only to illustrate theses conceived in the abstract, but also as a means of explaining issues which, for the sake of justice, deserved patient consideration, while his grasp of the practical problems thrown up by legislation, litigation, and modern medicine led him to reflect deeply on the many differing accounts of law and justice given by more cloistered minds. In addition, it was his lived experience of the routine of private law–the contracts, conveyances, mortgages, testaments, statements of claim, and such like (the kind of work solicitors do all day)–that led to his fascination with the school of thinkers who attempt a general account of how that unglamorous process all adds up: his thoughts and writings returned to legal positivism again and again.

This chapter recounts Herbert Brownell's 1953 attack on President Truman and Harry White, which rekindled interest in Harry for a brief time and led to further investigations by state officials in New Hampshire, the FBI, and the Senate Subcommittee on Internal Security. It mentions the newly elected attorney general of New Hampshire, Louis C. Wyman, who was prompted by Brownell's speech and sent two officials to Blueberry Hill in in November 1953, where Harry's wife still lived in the summer. The chapter highlights that the June hearing dealt exclusively with the Morgenthau Diaries, which contained no information relevant to possible espionage but which included many excerpts detailing Harry's influential role in the U.S. Treasury. The subcommittee's general counsel, J. G. Sourwine, introduced each excerpt with a short statement aimed at making Harry seem like a dangerous infiltrator.

It is a great irony that none of the later drugs equaled those of the “golden years” of the 1950s, as though no subsequent generation of railway locomotives equaled the Iron Horse of the pioneers. Lithium remains the agent nonpareil for mood disorders but no subsequent “antidepressants” were ever the equal of imipramine and other tricyclics. The lack of progress in psychopharmacology was caused by the pharmaceutical industry’s taking over clinical trials. The 1962 Kefauver-Harris amendments triggered drug trials’ becoming so expensive that the incentive to try bold new experiments was minimal. The beginning of the great pivot of investigator-led to industry-led trials in the 1980s occurred as the “medical advisors” of pharmaceutical companies became responsible for collating the data as it came in from the various centers.

This chapter describes that the international role of the U.S. Treasury had expanded greatly during Harry White's tenure there. It traces the chaos of international finance after the collapse of the international gold standard, which forced the Treasury to devise new policies and techniques to stabilize currency values and preserve international trade. At the same time, many U.S. trading partners and allies were threatened by the increasingly aggressive behavior of Germany, Japan, and other members of the Axis. The chapter mentions that the State Department, led by Secretary Cordell Hull, viewed dealing with the issue as its own turf, but Henry Morgenthau was able to draw on his close friendship with President Roosevelt to ensure an important role for the Treasury. Morgenthau recognized and acknowledged Harry's uncommon abilities and relied heavily on him to develop the strategies and tactics for aiding allied countries financially.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses key figures in the 1950s and 1960s whose work led to the theory of generative phonology. Generative phonology developed in part from the collaboration of Roman Jakobson and Morris Halle, continuing the Prague School approach by elaborating and modifying earlier ideas concerning distinctive features and relating them to mathematical models from the then-new field of information theory. Another source was the formalization of American structuralist phonology by Zellig Harris and the critique of that theory by Noam Chomsky. These sources merged in the collaboration of Chomsky and Halle and their criticisms of prevailing notions of the phoneme. Another fruitful area of collaboration was their account of English stress and the cycle. We will show how the emerging synthesis both built on and diverged from earlier ideas, and discuss some of the controversies of the years leading up to the appearance of The Sound Pattern of English.

Abstract:
Abstract Rapid urbanization resulted in the drastic expansion of the built infrastructure in urban areas. This eventually led to an increase in energy consumption in the residential and commercial sectors. An appropriate selection of the convective heat transfer coefficient correlation at the design stage is of vital importance as it directly affects the cooling load of the building and consequently buildings’ energy demand. In this context, the comparative analysis of existing convective heat transfer coefficient correlations (CHTCs) used in building simulation programs such as EnergyPlus, ESP-r, IES, IDA, and TAS, are assessed. These correlations are tested against the data of Liu et al.’s [1]. It is observed that some of CHTCs correlations show lower error and others exhibit a significant deviation. In the case of the CHTCs used EnergyPlus, it is observed that the TARP algorithm shows overall better prediction ability for windward, leeward, and roof surface. On the other hand, in the case of the ESP-r, different correlations show a good prediction ability for different surfaces. For windward surface: MoWiTT; for leeward surface: MoWiTT and McAdams; and for roof surface: Liu and Harris show closer prediction with an error of less than 30% among other correlations. The correlation used in IES, IDA, and TAS shows a large deviation for windward, leeward, and roof surfaces under considered input. Based on this analysis, it can be concluded that the choice of such CHTCs uses in the BES tool can lead to the significantly higher energy consumption of the building and hence need the expertise to make the appropriate selection.
