The purpose of the thesis aims to explore characteristics of fantasy literature and how Rowling constructs her world of fantasy with these traits in her Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Moreover, the researcher also conducts an empirical class to probe the effects of the application of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in junior high school English teaching as well as the attitudes and difficulties of junior high school students toward the literature course. This thesis is divided into six parts. In Chapter One, the introduction presents a survey of perspectives on the Harry Potter series, biographical background of J. K. Rowling, the reasons for literature as a teaching material, and the organization of the thesis. In Chapter Two, the definitions of fantasy, the roots and development of fantasy, the values of fantasy, and the characteristics of fantasy are dealt with. In general, fantasy includes five characteristics: time, space, magic, transformation and inhabitants. In Chapter Three, J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is analyzed with the above five characteristics. Moreover, Harry’s heroic quest and his inspiration to the readers are discussed. Chapter Four is analyses and the application of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in junior high school English class. The reasons for choosing Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as appropriate teaching materials, the language teaching approaches and their application in EFL literature instruction, instructional context and activities for teaching English fictional works, the teaching aids and reading skills are demonstrated first. Then the application of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in junior high school English class, including the motivation, purposes, research questions, the significance, the course design and teachers’ opinions on the course, are presented. Chapter Five shows the results and discussions of the teaching application. First, the participants, the instruments and the data collection procedures are mentioned. Second, the responses in the students’ Pre-instructional Questionnaires and the Post-instructional Questionnaires are compared. Third, the results of students’ pretest and posttest are discussed. Fourth, the students’ learning journals and portfolios are analyzed. The final chapter summaries the major findings of the study, discusses the limitations of the present study and offers suggestions for further study.
