The purpose of this essay is to present the reader an analysis of Harry Potter as high fantasy and how Rowling has expanded on high fantasy norms which can be seen as a contributing factor to why the saga became such a global phenomenon.  This essay will show the ways in which Harry Potter elaborates on the high-fantasy norms by analyzing its narrative elements (setting, narrative structure, characters, and language). The first part will be a brief introduction to high-fantasy and its norms while the second part will be an analysis of the novels in terms of these norms.

Abstract:
This study travels into the magical world of Harry Potter as both story and book series to explore its reception in Iran. The purpose of this study is to discover how the magical world of Harry Potter has broken down cultural boundaries and reinforced others, and has attracted many children and adults as readers in Iran, where it is read mostly through translated versions and where certain aspects of the story are censored or adapted for an Iranian audience. I will discuss how the Harry Potter series is read and received differently in Iran and North America by comparing critical responses, for example, to religion, magic, and technology in the series. By using the text-oriented branch of reader-response theory, which is supported by theorists such as Wolfgang Iser and Georges Poulet, I will explain how readers of the Harry Potter series leave their own world and engage in the world of the novel. Also, by applying the reader-centered school of reception theory, as argued by scholars such as Stanley Fish, I will discuss the role of the reader's personal life experiences and cultural background in the reading process. In order to better explore the influence of cultural communities on both readers and writers, this study will explain intercultural theories and the importance of cultural similarities and differences in both producing and interpreting a text. This study will also consider the cross-cultural factors that may affect the writing and reading processes. These factors include religious, social, literary, and historical issues which vary for readers from different countries. To discuss the intercultural reception of the series in Iran, I will analyze the Persian translations of the series as well as the important role of cultural norms and the issue of censorship in the process of translation in Iran. I am very interested in the intercultural aspects of the reception of the book series as someone who grew up in Iran and first read Harry Potter in translation there, before moving to Canada where I undertook graduate studies in comparative literature and continued to follow the series and its critical reception in English. The reception of the novel in Canada is similar to that of most Western countries and there are not enough cultural specificities to warrant a study of Canadian reception alone, except for its French translations as part of the reception in Quebec. However, as I will study further, the translations for French Canada are done in France, so I will compare translation strategies of French and Iranian translators. Contrary to Quebec, where there are currently no Quebecois translations of the Harry Potter series and where readers read translations by a French translator from Europe, in Iran readers have several translations of each volume to choose from. As a result of the issue of censorship in Iran, Persian translators of Harry Potter have to find the best possible method in order to transfer the Western series into Persian for an Islamic culture. This thesis discusses the specific challenges of translating from English to Persian, but I will also refer to celebrated theorists such as Jeremy Munday, Lawrence Venuti, Antoine Berman, and Friedrich Schleiermacher, who discuss different methods of translation, which enable French and Persian translators of the series to transfer both cultural and literal contexts in the most faithful way possible. I will compare the reception of the Harry Potter novels in the context of North American societies and Islamic Iranian society by discussing which aspects of the series are more closely studied by Western and Iranian critics and how these choices reflect different cultural norms, values, beliefs, and taboos concerning childhood and children's literature, especially in terms of gender relations and religion. As I will explain, the series has been condemned by extremist Christians in the West for prompting the dark arts and the occult. These negative critics claim that the series presents magic as fun and harmless, thus promoting sorcery and convincing children that they can use magic in order to reach their goals. Since magic is more a part of Iranian everyday culture, the series is not criticised for presenting magic in Iran, but it is marginally accused of being a Zionist plot aimed at destroying the morality of children. On the other hand, positive critics in both the West and Iran argue that the series promotes modern values and teaches morality by presenting the notions of love, sacrifice, friendship, family, and self discovery."--Résumé abrégé par UMI.

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series is the latest popular addition to translated Afrikaans children’s literature. Although these books have a double readership, the Afrikaans translations are primarily aimed at young Afrikaans children who either can’t speak English, or whose English is too poor to understand the original text on their own. Translating for children makes specific demands on the translator. One such demand involves the choices the translator is forced to make during the translation process by taking into account the child reader’s limited cultural experience and world knowledge. This implies that the translator cannot translate automatically by merely transferring synonyms from one language to another, but should take on the role of a cultural mediator who bridges the gaps between the source and the target cultures and takes responsibility for successful intercultural communication. This study investigates the culturally mediating role of the Afrikaans translators, Janie Oosthuysen and Kobus Geldenhuys, in a comparative study of the target texts, Harry Potter en die beker vol vuur and Harry Potter en die halfbloed prins. The proposed translation method is a functionalist approach with loyalty. According to this apporach, the translator should have a thorough background knowledge of both the source and target cultures and the functions these texts perform in their respective cultures, as well as the range of available translation strategies for a specific translation situation. Care should also be taken not to mislead the target reader. A descriptive methodology is followed, pointing out the absence of consistent translation norms and a well-planned translation strategy in both target texts, thus increasing the cultural divide between the source and the target cultures which could confuse the young Afrikaans reader.

Harry Potter, succès d’édition sans précédent, est une œuvre hybride et intertextuelle, héritière de nombreuses traditions littéraires. A l’influence des genres de l’imaginaire s’ajoute celle du roman scolaire, du récit de mystère ou d’aventures et celle du texte initiatique. De cette intergénéricité naît un univers riche, foisonnant de trouvailles dont l’écrit et ses instruments proposent de multiples exemples. L’auteure met ainsi en place moult jeux d’imitation et de détournement autour de scènes de lecture et d’écriture, reflétant la richesse de ses romans. Elle propose en outre à son lecteur, par une écriture ludique et manipulatrice, de nombreux jeux, sollicitant tantôt son esprit de déduction et sa mémoire, tantôt sa culture littéraire. Elle multiplie en effet les clins d’œil et références à d’autres œuvres dans son texte dont la lecture peut se faire à plusieurs niveaux. Fidèle à la tradition du cycle en littérature, la romancière a prolongé son univers de fiction dans de nouveaux écrits, dans une logique de pratique transfictionnelle. The Harry Potter books are the inheritors of several literary traditions. Both intergeneric and intertextual, they do not only belong to the category of non-realistic genres but also to the traditions of school fiction, mystery or adventure novels and initiation stories. This hybridity results in the creation of a very rich universe, teeming with inventions; all sorts of texts and writing tools are representative of this creativity. J. K. Rowling both imitates and distorts her sources, in scenes in which writing and reading play an important part. Besides, thanks to a playful and manipulative style, she invites her readers to play with their sense of deduction and memory and their literary culture. Indeed, she refers to many works of fiction and thus, proposes different ways of reading and understanding her stories. As is the case with most literary cycles, she has expanded on her fictional world in new texts, pieces of what is now called “trans-fictional” writing. J. K. Rowling and her readers also have developed the Harry Potter world, rewritten it and transferred it to new media, turning this literary work into transmedia fiction. This study focuses on the three main points mentioned, that is to say first on the part played by reading and writing in the Harry Potter books, then on the relation between the writer and her readers through her writing and on the many different ways in which the novels have been and still are being rewritten

Os livros da série Harry Potter tiveram seu primeiro volume publicado em 1997 e o último em 2007. Desde o princípio, a série passou a exercer um forte apelo sobre leitores de todas as idades e de todos os lugares. O objetivo desta dissertação é investigar esse fenômeno, a fim de identificar os motivos pelos quais a resposta às obras provou ser tão intensa. O corpus de investigação compreende os sete livros que formam a saga: Harry Potter e a Pedra Filosofal, Harry Potter e a Câmara Secreta, Harry Potter e o Prisioneiro de Azkaban, Harry Potter e o Cálice de Fogo, Harry Potter e a Ordem da Fênix, Harry Potter e o Enigma do Príncipe, e Harry Potter e as Relíquias da Morte. Os focos da análise se concentram em três aspectos: a jornada do herói; as diferentes formas de apresentação da ideia de morte; e o tratamento das dicotomias. Como suporte teórico, recorro a estudos sobre mitologia e imaginário, conforme tratados por Joseph Campbell; às considerações morais e estéticas de Umberto Eco sobre conexões entre os reinos vizinhos da Vida e da Literatura; e à abordagem filosófica de Zygmunt Bauman sobre nossos tempos líquidos contemporâneos. O trabalho está estruturado em duas partes. A primeira apresenta algumas hipóteses sobre a pronta aceitação da obra por parte do público leitor e expõe a base teórica sobre a qual se apoiam os arrazoados do trabalho, estabelecendo as conexões necessárias com os pontos investigados. A segunda parte contém minha leitura da série Harry Potter, centrada nos três itens propostos para análise. Ao final da dissertação, espero que minha análise possa contribuir para a discussão sobre o papel que a série Harry Potter desempenha no contexto contemporâneo e também sobre quais paradigmas atuais ela ratifica, questiona ou refuta.
The Harry Potter Books had their first instalment published in 1997 and the last in 2007. From the beginning, the series exerted a very strong appeal upon readers of all ages, and from all places. The aim of the present thesis is to investigate this phenomenon so as to identify some reasons why the response to the works has proved so intense. The corpus of investigation comprises the seven books that form the saga: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The focus of the analysis closes upon three aspects, the journey of the hero, the different approaches to death, and the treatment of dichotomies. As for critical and theoretical support I rely on studies about mythology and the imaginary, especially as presented by Joseph Campbell, on Umberto Eco‟s moral and aesthetic considerations about the connections between the neighbouring realms of Life and Literature, and on Zygmunt Bauman's philosophical approach to our liquid contemporary times. The work is divided into two parts. The first presents the necessary contextualization, poses some hypotheses about the prompt acceptance on the part of the reading public, and exposes the theoretic background on which this thesis is grounded, and establishes the necessary connections with the points investigated. The second part contains my reading of the Harry Potter Books, closing on the three items to be analysed. At the end of this argumentative thesis I hope my analysis may contribute to the discussion about the role the Harry Potter Books play in their contemporary context, and about which of the current paradigms they ratify, question or deny.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Harry Potter series is currently one of the most popular book series for children in the world. The original British books have been translated into more than three hundred languages - one of them being Afrikaans, for which the Afrikaans translator received two translation prizes. Yet closer investigation reveals that these translations are not written in idiomatic Afrikaans, mostly due to the phenomenon of 'interference'. This phenomenon entails an excessive influence of the linguistic structures of the source text on that of the target text. The influence of the English source text on the Afrikaans translator by means of interference was of such an extent that the texts have been written in unnatural language, called 'translationese'. In this study the influence of interference on the quality of the Afrikaans translations of Harry Potter is examined. The focus is on books 4 and 5 in the series, namely Harry Potter en die Beker vol Vuur and Harry Potter en die Orde van die Feniks. The basic premises of the functionalistic approach to translation are used to emphasise the importance of the translation skopos, the function that the translation has to fulfil in the target culture, a detailed translation brief as well as the translator's loyalty towards the various role players in the translation process. Descriptive translation studies is used to prove the apparent absence of knowledge of translation norms as well as translation decisions and strategies that had to be considered carefully during the production of the Afrikaans translations. The researcher hereby attempts to emphasise the importance of careful consideration and planning of translation strategies. Cognisance of the functionalistic and descriptive premises would have lead to a more natural translation that communicates optimally with the target readers in the target culture.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Harry Potter-reeks is tans een van die mees gesogte kinderreeksboeke ter wêreld. Die oorspronklike Britse boeke is in meer as driehonderd tale vertaal - onder andere ook in Afrikaans, waarvoor die Afrikaanse vertaler reeds twee vertaalpryse ontvang het. Tog toon nadere ondersoek dat hierdie vertalings inderwaarheid nie in idiomatiese Afrikaans vertaal is nie, hoofsaaklik weens die verskynsel 'interferensie'. Hierdie verskynsel behels 'n oormatige invloed van die linguistiese strukture van die brontaal op die doeltaal. Die Engelse bronteks het sodanige invloed op die Afrikaanse vertaler gehad, dat die teks weens interferensie in onnatuurlike taal geskryf is, oftewel in 'translationese'. In hierdie studie word die invloed van interferensie op die kwaliteit van die Afrikaanse Harry Potter-vertalings, spesifiek boeke 4 en 5 in die reeks, naamlik Harry Potter en die Beker vol Vuur en Harry Potter en die Orde van die Feniks, ondersoek. Die basiese uitgangspunte van die funksionalistiese benadering tot vertaling word gebruik om die noodsaaklikheid van 'n vooropstelling van die vertaalskopos, die funksie wat die vertaling in die doelkultuur moet speel, die belangrikheid van 'n gedetailleerde vertaalopdrag asook lojaliteit van die vertaler aan die onderskeie rolspelers in die vertaalproses uit te lig. Abstract:
In this essay I have studied the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling from an ecocritical point of view. The main theorist is Timothy Morton and his concepts of the Mesh and Strange Strangers. The analysis shows that the books are anthropocentric, and that Culture has a higher status than Nature in the magic world. The analysis also shows that the witches and wizards of the books have a similar way of looking at nature as the real world has, which can be used to open up discussions about nature. The books are anthropocentric when it comes to animals and how they can be used. The analysis also focuses on coexisting, and how the magic world deals with Strange Strangers. The Strange Strangers that the analysis deals with are both humans and other entities.

Abstract:
This essay explores how in the Harry Potter series, J. K. Rowling's magical heroes function asparadigms whose roles reflect on issues of race, prejudice and racism. Those issues include goodand evil, socialism and aristocracy, purity and impurity, freedom and indebtedness. This essayfocuses on showing how those themes are reflected and confronted in the dipole between HarryPotter and Draco Malfoy. Additionally, the Critical Race Theory, a theory that examines howculture uses and assorts power and race in society, is implemented to show how race andprejudice are reflected in the magical world. By further analyzing Harry and Draco's upbringingand social milieus in relation to the theme of good vs. evil, the development of these characters ispresented in response to their contrasting surroundings. The paper concludes that thesecharacters evolve in the final novels and make conscious choices to achieve the common causeof defying evil, despite their opposing backgrounds.
Denna uppsats utforskar hur J. K. Rowlings magiska hjältar, i Harry Potter-serien, fungerar somen paradigm vars roller reflekterar frågor kring ras, fördomar och rasism. Dessa frågor inkluderargott och ont, socialism och aristokrati, renhet och orenhet, frihet och skuldsättning. Dennauppsats fokuserar på att visa hur dessa teman reflekteras och konfronteras i dipolen mellan HarryPotter och Draco Malfoy. Dessutom implementeras Critical Race Theory, en teori somundersöker hur kultur använder och sorterar makt och ras i samhället, för att visa hur ras ochfördomar återspeglas i den magiska världen. Genom att ytterligare analysera Harry och Dracosuppväxt och sociala miljöer i förhållande till temat ’gott mot ont’, presenteras dessa karaktärersutveckling som ett resultat av kontrasterande omgivning. Uppsatsen drar slutsatsen att dessakaraktärer utvecklas i de sista romanerna och gör medvetna val för att uppnå det gemensammamålet till att bekämpa det onda, trots deras motsatta bakgrunder.

Abstract:

My intentions with this essay has been to examine the World in which the story of J. K. Rowlings Harry Potter takes place, the structure, narrative and restrictions, in order to place the suite of novels in the tradition of the Fantasy genre. Since the release of the first book Harry Potter has become a household name, possibly more than any other contemporary literature written for children. Various readings concerning gender, etymological, linguistic aspects and so forth have been done, and in most cases the books are placed in the genre of Fantasy without distinguishing what in fact makes the novels Fantasy. I wanted to see which specific sectors of the books that place them in the genre, and, assuming that it would in fact fit into the Fantasy genre, in which ways it diverges from the tradition of the genre in means of the structure of the world/s of the story. I also looked at the faults in the logic within the novels to see if the inconsistencies in the rules of the world have an impact on the agency of the story.

I found the novels to be a part of the fantasy tradition, not only by having many intertextual relations and similar features to other fantasy-novels but also in the fundament of the story, its basic conditions such as the supernatural elements and the hidden places in the world of the books. The minor inconstancies that I found where to small to disrupt the narrative, and the fact that some of the aspects of the books drift slightly away from the logic of the world within the story have reasonable explanations such as making the story easier to relate to.

Syftet med denna studie är att med fokus på miljöbeskrivningar undersöka den fantastiska berättelsens samspel med verkligheten utanför romanen. Den fantastiska berättelse som står i centrum för texttolkning och närläsning är Harry Potter och De vises sten skriven av J. K. Rowling (2001).

Studien visar att Rowling bland annat använder sig av den realistiska verkligheten som inspiration där en realistisk verklighet ofta förändras genom fantastiska inslag. Vid ett flertal tillfällen i romanen är samspelet så intimt att många ting och detaljer i miljöskildringar likväl skulle kunna ha skildrats i en realistisk verklighet utanför romanen.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the first four books of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It accounts for the widespread success of the novels by examining their publication and marketing histories, and their literary achievement as narratives including a sophisticated mix of generic traditions. Chapter One looks at the popularity of the novels, comparing their material production and marketing by Rowling’s English language publishers: Bloomsbury in Britain and Scholastic in the United States of America. The publisher’s influence on the public perception of each book is demonstrated by comparative study of its mode of illustration and layout. Further, the design of the books is linked to their strategic marketing and branding within the literary world. The second chapter considers Rowling’s debt to the school story. It concentrates first on the history of this relatively short-lived genre, briefly discussing its stereotypical features and values. Traditional elements of setting and characterisation are then examined to show how the Harry Potter novels present a value system which, though apparently old-fashioned, still has an ethical standpoint designed to appeal to the modern reader. Chapter Three focuses on the characterisation of Harry as a hero-figure, especially on how the influence of classical and medieval texts infuses Rowling’s portrayal of Harry as a hero in the chivalric mode. The episodes of “quest” and “test” in each book illustrate specifically how he learns the values of selflessness, loyalty, mercy and fairness. Chapter Four surveys the contribution of modern fantasy writing to the series. It shows how Rowling creates a secondary world that allows us to perceive magic as a metaphorical representation of power. This focus on the relationship between magic and power in turn has a bearing on our assessment of the author’s moral stance. The thesis concludes by suggesting that Rowling’s unusual mix of genres is justified by the values they share, and which are inscribed in her work: the generic combination forms a workable, new and exciting mode of writing that helps to account for the phenomenal popularity of the series.

In order to describe and verify the most common resources used in the creation of Harry Potter fanfictions in Brazil, this study presents the movement of consumers towards a more participative culture in the last two decades, its implications to debates on intellectual property and the impact of technological evolution on the production and circulation of media content. The work also examines the history of fanfiction and the existent mechanisms of reinterpretation of original narratives, as well as the expressive numbers that represent the success of J.K. Rowling's books both as an editorial phenomenon and fandom on the internet. Given the significant production inspired in the Harry Potter series by Brazilian fans, three representative fanfictions are analyzed, in the light of the specific ways the original is rewritten. Alternative universe, focus on secondary characters, slash and timeline expansion, which were found to be the most recurrent procedures in the rewritings, evince partiality for personal creation on the part of authors and readers

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation provides a reading of the fantasy novel series Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling and The Belgariad by David Eddings. In particular this dissertation endeavours to recuperate a literary critical methodology rooted in Myth Criticism. Further, it seeks to demonstrate the continued relevance and necessity of this form of criticism in our postmodern era and to refute some of the commonplaces of postmodern critical theory, specifically the poststructuralist scepticism towards the idea of universal truth and individual agency. Using Jungian theory, myth critics ranging from Laurence Coupe to Joseph Campbell and incorporating various postmodern theorists, like the contemporary Marxist theorist Terry Eagleton, and fantasy critics like Brian Attebery and Ursula LeGuin, this dissertation aims to give a well-rounded analysis of the merits of looking at fantasy as a legitimate field of literary study. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to illustrate the fact that fantasy is capable of informing readers’ interaction with the ‘real’ world and that this genre allows for insight into identity formation in present day reality. The chief structure used to explore these claims is an analysis of the Hero’s Journey.

L’adaptation existe depuis les débuts du cinéma. Dès lors, le nombre de versions filmiques d’œuvres littéraires ne cesse de croître et l’adaptation reste au cœur de la production cinématographique partout dans. Toutefois nous constatons que l’adaptation se trouve dans une situation quelque peu paradoxale. Ce qui motive sa conception est également à l’origine de la majeure partie des critiques. D’une part, le bénéfice économique est évident. La notoriété d’un roman à succès garantit un public nombreux. D’autre part, le contexte créatif se révèle difficile car, du point de vue ontologique, l’adaptation préserve la comparaison traditionnelle en s’appuyant sur un paradigme oppositionnel des arts où le film se doit de se justifier face au texte source. Se situant à la croisée des arts, l’adaptation focalise un débat sur une hiérarchie notionnelle des arts où la narration à travers des images serait toujours perçue comme inférieure aux autres formes. Dans cette thèse, nous étudions ce phénomène dans le contexte de la résurgence de la fantasy lors des années 2000. Ce fait culturel du monde anglophone atteindra un niveau inattendu au cinéma avec le succès des adaptations des romans de J. R. R. Tolkien et de J. K. Rowling tandis que la réception des versions filmiques des œuvres de C. S. Lewis peut paraître mitigée. À partir de ces constats, nous nous interrogeons parallèlement sur le processus et le produit de l’adaptation en plaçant notre corpus au centre du débat à travers une approche descendante de comparaison. Nous espérons ainsi pouvoir apporter quelques éléments de réflexion sur l’engouement du public pour ces histoires et sur l’adaptation comme domaine d’étude
Adaptation has been a part of cinema since its very beginning. Since then, the number of film versions of literary works which appear on screen has never ceases to increase and adaptation is still at the heart of cinematic production around the world. Adaptation actually exists in a rather paradoxical situation. What motivates its conception is also the source of the majority of criticism against it. On one hand, the economic advantage is clear. The fame of a popular novel guarantees a large audience. On the other hand, its creative context can prove to be difficult since ontologically adaptation serves to preserve the traditional comparison based on an oppositional paradigm of the arts where the film has to justify itself in front of the source text. Standing at a crossroads between the arts, adaptation is the focus of a debate on a notional hierarchy within the arts where narration through images could still be perceived as inferior compared to other forms.We wanted to study this phenomenon within the context of the resurgence of fantasy witnessed in the 2000’s in this thesis. In the English-speaking world this cultural event reached an unexpected level with the success of the adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling’s novels while the film versions of C. S. Lewis’ works were less well received. With these points in mind, we consider the process and the product of adaptation in order to situate our corpus in the debate through a top down approach of comparison. We thus hope to bring some elements of reflections on the craze for these stories and the domain of adaptation studies

Just as memory pervades our everyday lives, it pervades the lives of the characters and readers of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Acts of recall or recollection occur in almost every chapter as the characters in these novels devote much of the present to keeping in touch with some aspect of the past. Memory is integral to Harry Potter and His Dark Materials, highlighting the following problematic questions: Who are we and how do we relate to the past? How is what we wish for the future grounded in the past and the present? Memory is at the core of constructivism, the active construction of reality by the individual through the use of mental activity. In this thesis I maintain that the central protagonists in Harry Potter and His Dark Materials, Harry Potter and Lyra Belacqua, actively construct their "selves" from memories and narratives – their own and those of others – just as the novels' readers negotiate their own identities in the world outside of the novels. The constant recalling of the past to confirm and amply one's present creates a complex web of remembering and forgetting, assimilating and discarding, which we attempt to explicate through the use of culturally appropriate metaphors. The thesis comprises three chapters that correlate memory with genre, narrative, and technology respectively. I commence the thesis by exploring the idea of genre as collective memory. I position Harry Potter and His Dark Materials within the genre of heroic fantasy and examine how the monomyth provides readers with the memory triggers they require to decode the structure of these texts. The novels conform to and yet manipulate the preconceived patterns present in the heroic or "high" fantasy genre, where narrative, memory and identity are all linked by the desires of the stories' participants. Chapter Two applies Freud's concept of Nachtraglichkeit, which supposes the process of memory is one of incessant reconsideration or "retranslation", the reworking of memory traces in the light of later knowledge and experience. This conceptualisation of memory is compared to the common, but less productive, tendency to describe memory through objectifying metaphors, such as the idea that memory works analogously to a photograph. Chapter Three addresses how knowledge and experience in Harry Potter and His Dark Materials are furnished by prosthetic memory devices, such as photographs, the Pensieve, the alethiometer and the Amber Spyglass, “that permit us to transcend "raw" biological limits – for example, the limits on memory capacity or limits on our auditory range” (Bruner, Acts of Meaning 34). The novel's protagonists are then armed with these devices in trying to make sense of the landscapes they inhabit. Ultimately, we are all story-tellers (for better or for worse), weaving our self-narratives from material gleaned from the collective memories and prosthetic memory devices of the society we belong to, our own experiences, and the tales of others, trying to achieve the uniformity of consciousness and an awareness of the connection between the actions and events of the past, and the experience of the present, which are fundamental to a sense of individual identity.

In this study I apply social constructionism as propounded by Vivian Burr (1998) to show that although J. K. Rowling uses stereotypes in the Harry Potter series as a reflection of how gender is constructed across a wide range of societal institutions in contemporary Britain, she created complex characters who on an individual level subvert social constructs and thereby offers her readers alternatives to culturally defined concepts of gender. I explore the all-pervasive social phenomenon of gender and examine how it is constructed in present-day Britain and reflected in the series (bearing in mind that the first book was published in 1997 and the last one in 2007). My analysis of female and male characters in the books, and their interpersonal relationships, shows that Rowling's often tricky portrayal of femininities and masculinities gives us an honest view of teenagers’ lives and contemporary gender relations in an ever-changing, complex world.

The thesis deals with the interpretation of Series of Unfortunate Events written by an American author Lemony Snicket and Joanne K. Rowling´s story about Harry Potter. The analysis is focused on the moral and ethical aspects of individual motifs and symbols, as well as on the importance of human values in the behaviour of main characters. Some of the main protagonist were analysed according to their ability to spread good or evil, and therefore their influence on the young reader. The most important aspect was the good will of characters according to the principles of Lévinas' ethics while the self-sacrifice of the heroes is considered the highest moral value.

Tendo como base um racional psicanalítico, procuramos entender os principais motivos psicodinâmicos presentes na obra e a forma como a presença dos mesmos pode contribuir para o enorme sucesso da saga. Tal como a criança que brinca, o escritor tem a possibilidade de criar o seu próprio mundo distinto da realidade, fornecendo ao leitor a possibilidade deste apreciar as suas fantasias sem vergonha ou culpa. Com este estudo, pretendemos demonstrar como, através da ficção, conteúdos inconscientes reprimidos podem ser evocados, ao mesmo tempo que analisamos o significado das relações de objecto precoces.
This work is a theoretical study about J.K. Rowling’s seven books and her famous character, the young wizard Harry Potter – the boy who survived. Based on a psychoanalytic approach, we try to understand the main psychodynamic motifs that can be found within the books, as well as how they can be engaged with the tremendous success of this boy’s adventures. Similarly to the playing children, the writer can create his own world away from reality and, through his work, he offers the reader a way for him to enjoy his fantasies without shame or guilt. With this paper we pretend to demonstrate how, by fiction, repressed unconscious contents can be evoked, at the same time we analyse the meaning of primary object relations.

Na presente dissertação, pretende-se refletir sobre a criatividade literária e a tradução dessa criatividade para o português europeu. Em sentido lato, o conceito de criatividade que aqui utilizamos tem a ver com a ação da autora sobre a língua inglesa, e a apropriação da língua, de forma a criar novas palavras e expressões que nos transportem para um mundo de magia e de feitiços. Essa “nova“ língua traduz novos valores semânticos e novas categorias, e esses “novos” elementos, que são inseridos na língua pela autora, pressupõem uma atitude de análise e de reflexão sobre a “nova” língua que emerge destas novas experiências linguísticas. Assim, procedeu-se a uma análise da criatividade do texto-fonte, identificando-se os processos criativos utilizados pela autora para a inovação, formal e semântica, inserida na língua, passando de seguida a uma análise comparativa entre o texto original e o texto traduzido, refletindo sobre as premissas que estão subjacentes à tradução do texto literário. Na primeira parte da dissertação, depois da contextualização, apresentaram as diferenças entre texto literário e texto técnico e tradução literária e técnica, para depois realçar a importância da criatividade no texto literário e a frente de resistência que esta criatividade pressupõe no trabalho de tradução. Depois de identificar e analisar os processos de criatividade, realizou-se uma análise comparativa entre o texto-fonte e o texto-alvo que permitiu uma reflexão aprofundada sobre as estratégias de tradução. Com esta dissertação pretendeu-se contribuir para um aprofundamento da relação entre texto literário, criatividade e tradução e optou-se por escolher obras conhecidas do público juvenil, mas também do público em geral.
The following dissertation intends to reflect on the notion of literary creativity and the translation of said creativity into European Portuguese. The concept of creativity that we will use here is related to the author’s influence on the English language and the appropriation of the language, in order to create new words and expressions which carry us into a world of magic and spells. This “new” language translates new semantic values and categories, and these “new” elements, which are integrated into the language by the author, assume an analytical and reflective attitude regarding the “new” language which emerges from these new linguistic experiences. Thereby we proceed to an analysis of the creativity from the source text, identifying the creative processes used by the author for the formal and semantic innovation integrated into the language, followed by a comparative analysis between the original and the translated text, reflecting on the assumptions which are implied by literary translation. In the first part of this dissertation, after the contextualization, the differences between literary and technical translation will be presented, in order to highlight the importance of creativity in the literary text and the challenges that this creativity assumes in terms of translation. After identifying and analysing the creative processes, a comparative analysis will be carried out between the source text and the target text, which allowed an elaborated reflection on the translation strategies. This dissertation intends to contribute towards a further development into the relationship between the literary text, creativity and translation, by choosing books well known not only by a young audience, but also the general public.

The subject of this thesis is the "Comparison of the translations of realia in the fictional universe of Harry Potter". The main aim is to divide the realia found in Harry Potter books into thematic categories and thencarry out translation analysis to estimate translation solutions. This analysis is created through the prism of English. This thesis consists of three parts. The first part covers the general concepts of the theory of translation. The second part contains a brief biography of J. K. Rowling, the definition of fantasy, and an overview of the history of the four translations. The third part presents a comparison of the translation from English into two variations of Russian, Czech, and Ukrainian. In the thesis conclusion, we will summarize and estimate which translation solution of the four is more accurate, based on the carried out analysis of the translation examples discussed in part three. Trees, as threshold beings, effectively blur the line between the real world and fantastical alternate worlds, and destabilise traditional binary classification systems that distinguish humanity, and Culture, from Nature. Though the presence of trees is often peripheral to the main narrative action, their representation is necessary within the fantasy trope. Their consistent inclusion within fantasy texts of the twentieth century demonstrates an enduring arboreal legacy that cannot be disregarded in its contemporary relevance, whether they are represented individually or in collective forests. The purpose of my dissertation is to conduct a study of various prominent fantasy texts of the twentieth century, including the fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Robert Holdstock, Diana Wynne Jones, Natalie Babbitt, and J.K. Rowling. In scrutinising these texts, and drawing on insights offered by liminal, ecocritical, ecofeminist, mythological and psychological theorists, I identify the primary function of trees within fantasy narratives as liminal: what Victor Turner identifies as a ‘betwixt and between’ state (1991:95) where binaries are suspended in favour of embracing potentiality. This liminality is constituted by three central dimensions: the ecological, the mythological, and the psychological. Each dimension informs the relationship between the arboreal as grounded in reality, and represented in fantasy. Trees, as literary and cinematic arboreal totems are positioned within fantasy narratives in such a way as to emphasise an underlying call to bio-conservatorship, to enable a connection to a larger scope of cultural expectation, and to act as a means through which human self-awareness is developed.
