Abstract:

"Subtle Resistance: How Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Martha Jackson Resisted Post-World War II Gender Constructions" explores the careers of three women in postwar New York City—artists commonly referred to as "second generation" Abstract Expressionist painters, Grace Hartigan and Joan Mitchell, and gallerist Martha Jackson. Following the Second World War, the distinctions between men and women, and masculinity and femininity grew. It is in this polarized social field that Hartigan and Mitchell were able to carve out success, claim agency over the formation of their artistic identities, and overall resist the gender constructions that were so pervasive to postwar American culture. Martha Jackson, a Buffalo native who opened the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York City in 1953, played an important role in the careers of Hartigan and Mitchell and ensured continued progress in their careers during the tumultuous 1960s.

Chapter 1 examines the gendered construction of postwar American culture and the exemplary career of Martha Jackson, an independent woman who challenged traditional notions of a woman's role in society. Chapter 2 explores how Hartigan and Mitchell navigated the gendered tensions of the New York School. Chapter 3 studies how Hartigan and Mitchell's artistic styles reflect their construction of identity in relation to art historical tradition and the use of a controlled expressivity in their work.

Archival materials from the Martha Jackson Gallery Archives at the UB Anderson Gallery and the Grace Hartigan Papers at the Special Collections Research Center at Syracuse University, as well as periodicals, oral history interviews and other primary sources provide a new perspective of the social history of the time. With this new perspective, the challenges Hartigan, Mitchell, and Jackson faced become clearer, as do their means of resistance.

Abstract:
The repressive political conditions of the New Order state and the social dislocation caused by rapid industrial and technological development unquestionably affected the nature of artistic and cultural production in Indonesia. This thesis considers the dynamic of these conditions within a focused long-term study of the art and life of Indonesian "Surealis" painter, Lucia Hartini. My doctoral dissertation comprises this thesis and the forty-two minute documentary film Perbatasan / Boundaries: Lucia Hartini, Paintings from a Life (1999 – 2002) which I filmed in Indonesia and presents Lucia Hartini and her art in the context of her times from the historical standpoint of Reformasi and millennial change. Art historically, this thesis informs us of a wider journey, that of selected twentieth century Indonesian contemporary artists exploring concepts of simulacra, hyper-reality, the meta-real and the surreal through the stylistic use of photo-realism. Lucia Hartini is known for her "Beautiful Surrealism". A founding member of the "Surealis Yogya", formed in 1985, she was the only woman from the original group to continue painting professionally from the late 1970s, throughout the New Order, and into the era of Reform. The consideration of Lucia Hartini's work in this thesis acknowledges the gradual shift in her concerns. Lucia's paintings respond to her natural and social environment, as well as to the challenges and dramatic changes in her life. This thesis charts the journey of her artistic maturation, so richly embodied in her third solo exhibition, "Irama Kehidupan / The Spirit of Life", in January 2002. Through a critical commentary on paintings selected from her oeuvre and the textual analysis of Perbatasan / Boundaries, I discuss Lucia Hartini’s subject matter, unique systems of image formation and use of detail, her particular contribution to the characteristic qualities of Indonesian "Surealisme". I regard the techniques, conceptual approaches and processes of filmmaking as intrinsic to this exploration, a methodological perspective arising from Hendro Wiyanto (2001) observation that Indonesia's "Surealis" artists present us with "reality bundled as a dream". Lucia Hartini’s work raises questions of gender and personal transformation. This thesis argues that, for many years, the tensions created by the contrary forces of political repression and social transformation characterising much of New Order Indonesia, were reflected in her art. In a microcosmic-macrocosmic sense, Lucia and her art quietly contributed to attitudinal and social change in Indonesia. Works painted between 1986 and 1996 autobiographically chart a shift from personal distress to a growing sense of empowerment, followed by life-changing spiritual growth. I contextualize these paintings socially by studying the changing interstices between Lucia Hartini’s private life, her professional creative practice and the public persona she adopted in Indonesia’s emergent civilian society. My approach is informed by a conceptual framework based on difference, hybridity and its transformations, on the psychology of borderlands, negotiation and the transcendence of boundaries, witnessed through a study of the spiritual practice and quest for religious tolerance important to Lucia and evident in her art. This thesis reveals those boundaries which were transcended and those which remain negotiable. Twice filming Lucia Hartini’s art, I was also affected by the dramatically different conditions of production prevailing in 1992 in New Order Indonesia and those possible between 1999 and 2001 during Reformasi. These differences are highlighted in the textual analysis of Perbatasan / Boundaries. Engaging comparisons between contemporary Indonesian art and Indonesian documentary and feature films, I discuss important attempts to solve the problems associated with restrictions on freedom of expression in paintings made prior to Reformasi. I consider the different uses of figurative realism to depict subjects deemed controversial by the state, and the creation of credible representations in art and convincing characterisations in filmmaking. The dramatically real yet poetic work of the Indonesian Neo-realist filmmakers of the 1950s exemplified one such solution. Their films and ideas prompted comparisons with the photo-realism, poetic intent and dramatic juxtapositional image making of the "Surealis Yogya". The relationship I perceive between Neo-realist cinematic practice and contemporary international documentary filmmaking encouraged me to make a documentary about Lucia rather than a purely creative or experimentally surreal work. Because of Reformasi and the changes wrought by Lucia’s personal development, Perbatasan / Boundaries: Lucia Hartini, Paintings from a Life (1999 – 2002) is the documentary which my first short experimental video, Pusaran / Vortex: From the Kitchen to Outer Space (1992 - 1993), made during the New Order, could not be.

Madl, Claire. Paris, EPHE, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007EPHE4174.

Abstract:
This analysis describes the social connections and involvement of a bohemian nobleman from the late Enlightenment period in order to re-examine the models of cosmopolitanism and patriotism and the model whereby this period is seen as the beginning of the national awakening in Bohemia. It aims to point out divergences from these models by means of a biographical study. The changes in the ideas of the nobility are alos examined. The study draws on the library, reading, writings, publications, and also the activities in the public sphere of an aristocrat, Franz Anton Hartig (1758-1797). His efforts, seen as a discourse, to present multiple images of himself intended for different publics, inform us about his own conceptions of the communities he was addressing and which he wanted to be actively involved in, in the name of shared values such as natural law, the common good, or the progress of knowledge. These conceptions are examined in the light of the pratices used in the elaboration of this discourse (such as reading, writing, social networks, information networks or patronage). Literary figure, diplomat, protector of bohemian intellectual circles, active landowner, sick man in search of healing and salvation, Hartig envisaged different levels for his involvement: literary Europe, political Europe, Holy Roman Empire and Habsburg monarchy, new bohemian public sphere, landowning nobility, universal human community. He thus reinvents communities of involvement which do not owe anything to an exclusive corporatism of the nobility

Abstract:
The ontogenetic development in fish is considered as one of the most important steps in providing information to developmental biology, aquaculture and taxonomic studies. The Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP-2) is considered as a molecule essential for regulaton of embryonic development and bone formation, and has been poorly studied in fish. In this work, we have compared all the development phases of three important species of fish from the Pardo River basin, Curimbata (Prochilodus hartii) Piabanha (Brycon sp) and Piau (Leporinus steindachneri). The surface oocyte, stage and duration of embryonic/larval development were classified by using a stereoscopic microscope, and showed variations between the studied species. The transformation of the juveniles also showed variations, with 16 days post-hatching in P. hartii, 5 days in Brycon sp and 14 days in L. steindachneri. In immunohistochemistry, BMP-2 was identified in the blastocoel of the blastocyst and gastrula stages; forming the optic vesicle, notochord and somites on embryo of the ivestigated species. In larval and juvenil stages, BMP-2 has been identified in the formation of gills, eyes, heart, stomach, intestine, liver, fins, muscle and ossification in the species studies. Adults were sacrificed, dissected for biometrics measurements of the internal organs and photo documentation. The stomach of P. hartii showed a \"U\" shape with the presence of a structure similar to a gizzard, whereas in Brycon sp it was shaped like a \"J\" with the presence of pyloric caeca and in L. steindachneri it presented a \"Y\" form without the presence of pyloric caeca. Skeletons were prepared by retting technique with Dermestides beetles, interesting differences were observed between numbers of bones, where 4 infraorbital bones were found in P. hartii, 6 in Brycon sp and 4 in L. steindachneri. It is concluded that the specimens of P. hartii show ilyophagous eating habits while Brycon sp and L. steindachneri were considered omnivorous based on anatomical findings and that expression of BMP-2 is linked with morphogenesis and organogenesis of the studied species.

Abstract:

Zou, Liwen. "Construction of amino acid rate matrices and extensions of the Barry and Hartigan model for phylogenetic inference." 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10222/14248.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers two distinct topics in phylogenetic analysis. The first is construction of empirical rate matrices for amino acid models. The second topic, which constitutes the majority of the thesis, involves analysis of and extensions to the BH model of Barry and Hartigan (1987). There are a number of rate matrices used for phylogenetic analysis including the PAM (Dayhoff et al. 1979), JTT (Jones et al. 1992) and WAG (Whelan and Goldman 2001). The construction of each of these has difficulties. To avoid adjusting for multiple substitutions, the PAM and JTT matrices were constructed using only a subset of the data consisting of closely related species. The WAG model used an incomplete maximum likelihood estimation to reduce computational cost. We develop a modification of the pairwise methods first described in Arvestad and Bruno that better adjusts for some of the sparseness difficulties that arise with amino acid data. The BH model is very flexible, allowing separate discrete-time Markov processes to occur along different edges. We show, however, that an identifiability problem arises for the BH model making it difficult to estimate character state frequencies at internal nodes. To obtain such frequencies and edge-lengths for BH model fits, we define a nonstationary GTR (NSGTR) model along an edge, and find the NSGTR model that best approximates the fitted BH model. The NSGTR model is slightly more restrictive but allows for estimation of internal node frequencies and interpretable edge lengths. While adjusting for rates-across-sites variation is now common practice in phylogenetic analyses, it is widely recognized that in reality evolutionary processes can change over both sites and lineages. As an adjustment for this, we introduce a BH mixture model that not only allows completely different models along edges of a topology, but also allows for different site classes whose evolutionary dynamics can take any form.

Abstract:
This dissertation thesis is focused on music performance within the bounds of Order of the Cross with Red Star in the 18th century. The history of the Knight's Order rises from the first half of the 13th century and concerns the only original Czech church order. In the 18th century Knights of the Cross belonged to the most significant patrons of Art in Czech lands. Church and monastery of St. František in Prague, the center of the Order, became the most influential culture center. The charity work of the Order of that time influenced the creation of the extraordinary institution - the Order's menza that had the significant importance for operating of organ lofts of St. František Church because it provided the sufficient amount of singers and musicians. The research is exclusively based on non-music materials deposited in the Cross paper fond (Nr.195) consigned in the 1st department of the National Archives in Prague. According the information of the inventory department, the fond contains altogether 2315 cartons of paper material and 3306 books. Until now, the researchers have been interested in these sources only marginally which was caused mostly by its disorderliness and most important discoveries have been realized mostly just by lucky coincidences. The main part of this work is devoted to St....
