Abstract:
The fast Hartley transform (FHT) is a new tool for converting data between time and frequency domains. In this thesis, some speed-optimized software implementations of the radix-2 and split-radix FHT algorithms are presented initially, and then applied to the problems of convolution, computation of power spectra, image degradation, and image restoration. Subsequent work involved the development of a new bit-reversal algorithm. This algorithm is fast and efficient, and can be used to increase the throughput of the FHT. Finally, several hardware implementations are presented for the discrete Hartley transform (DHT) and the FHT with architectures using a single butterfly unit, pipelining and superparallelism. The advantages of each implementation are stressed. The data processing rates of these hardware implementations are analyzed.

Abstract:

Deer, Lesley. "The repetition of difference : marginality and the films of Hal Hartley." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/141.

Abstract:
Hal Hartley is prominent within the recent rise of the independent film-making movement in America. This thesis is centred around the issues of repetition, difference and marginality which characterise his films. Marginality inhabits Hartley's position as an American independent who makes a European art-house style of film. He is an auteur who articulates his influences through his reference to Godard. Marginality is also the dominant characteristic of those who people Hartley's films. Difference, which is marginality pushed to its greatest extent, is further imposed upon Hartley's characters. It is interposed through Hartley's concern with repetition, in which the degree of formal repetition becomes so high that difference is forefronted. This thesis asserts that the essential difference in Hartley's films lies in gender. After an introduction which engages with the issues highlighted above, Chapter I contains a literature review which serves both to delineate critical opinions on Hartley, and to demonstrate the lack of sustained material which this thesis hopes to go some way towards redressing. Chapter II's taxonomy emphasises the consistency of Hartley's concern with repetition. It establishes both the formal repetition, linear and cyclical, which structures Hartley's films, and the behavioural repetition which his characters exhibit. Chapter III extends the taxonomy by applying theories of repetition to Trust. It uses Deleuze to engage with the tensions between the linear and cyclical modes of formal repetition in the film. An analogy with minimalism introduces difference into this repetition. Finally, the chapter examines Matthew's marginality and crisis of masculinity, embodied within the compulsion to repeat passive behaviour, in light of Freud's theories on repetition. Chapter IV extends male marginality into the interrogation of Thomas' criminality in Amateur. It is a criminality largely instituted through parodic generic reference. Thomas' amnesia does not allow him either to repent or to escape the reputation through which his criminality is perpetuated. Religion, notably the figure of Redeemer, is introduced as a means to bring about Thomas' redemption. The film's engagement with the resonances of pornography problematises both the Redeemer, Isabelle (who is both Virgin and Whore) and wider gender issues. Chapter V extends the concern with pornography, which defiles the ecstatic experience of writing characteristic of Henry Fool's shamanic figures. The film questions Henry's status as a criminal who refuses to repent. The blurring of legal and moral judgement in the film suggests an analogy with the genre of a morality play. Without repentance, redemption occurs though forgiveness and trust. The pornographic, which in invoked but never seen, serves to interrogate gender positioning in relation to it. Chapter VI examines female agency, with The Unbelievable Truth's Audry ostensibly exerting control over her commodification. Audry is not as able to control her commodification as much as the film suggests. She loses her ideals through the sale of images of herself. The film attempts a Godardian engagement with the problem of the commodified female image. It does so without showing the images of Audry, resisting their inherently exploitative nature and not allowing them to become pornographic by eliciting viewing pleasure. Yet by not showing these images, Hartley increases their coding as objects of desire. He does not escape the problems of the auteur using female images. Chapter VII concerns Simple Men, a film which seeks to make reparation for the exploitative use of women by placing women as the film's necessary centre. However, in alluding to male-centred genres, Hartley's film displaces women into the margins of male scenarios, reducing them both to function and difference in relation to men. Rather than the problems of femininity, the film engages with the troubled masculinities which its genre invokes. Chapter VIII reprises repetition in light of Hartley's wider questioning of gender. Applying formal and behavioural theories of repetition to Flirt, the chapter asks: What is the difference in Hartley's repetitions? Since Flirt's repetitions involve the gendering of masochism as female, and mark femininity as the essential difference, it can retrospectively be asserted that it is gender that is the key difference, the ultimately signified, of Hartley's repetitions. It is with this that the thesis concludes by drawing together the central themes of Hartley's films. These include male marginality, and its association with troubled masculinities, and the problematic associations of pornography with the objectification and commodification of women. Although marginality extends across gender boundaries within Hartley's films, it is ultimately women who are more fundamentally marginalised by them. This is brought about through the association of the difference which inhabits repetition with femininity.

Abstract:
This thesis examines David Hartley’s Observations on Man (1749) and elucidates how Hartley’s mechanical approach to mind, his conception of emotion, and the religious status he awards the body were newly relevant after 1791. In this way it identifies a ‘Hartlean culture’ within the Romantic period and seeks to explore how such an intellectual climate influenced the radical writers William Blake (1757–1827) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759–1797). Blake and Wollstonecraft were acquainted with the famous bookseller Joseph Johnson, who republished Observations on Man in various forms and versions between 1775 and 1801. They also had an association with Johnson’s circle; the Hartlean concepts found throughout their work evidence Hartley’s latent popularity within intellectual culture, as well as the writers’ engagement with contemporary philosophical ideas. I propose that the renewed curiosity in Hartley during the 1790s reveals a specific religious and revolutionary culture wherein non-conformist views about Christianity and new ideas about the body, emotion and women flourished. Such a cultural moment renders Hartley a particularly important figure for debate since he integrated progressive values about equality and faith alongside advancing understanding of anatomy and mind. Hartley identified how God and happiness could be found physically within each person. He did this by combining a complex theory of vibrations and theory of association, where the body and mind functioned mechanically through a person’s feelings of pleasure and pain. These feelings manifested as physical vibrations and eventually led every person to desire goodness until finally, they can become ‘Godlike’ themselves. Hartley’s amalgamation of Christian and new theoretical concepts appealed to Blake and Wollstonecraft, and was much unlike the approach of Joseph Priestley who abridged Observations in 1775 to promote a wholly ‘scientific’ text. In this way, we can see resonances between Hartley, Blake and Wollstonecraft, even if they existed in different cultural contexts. In rethinking Blake and Wollstonecraft through Hartley, I offer new insights into their feminism. In particular I attend to how Hartlean culture enabled these writers to re-imagine gender and emotion: Wollstonecraft reinstates the female experience back into Hartlean concepts in order to promote women’s emotional potential and what she understands as the special power of the female-female bond. Blake responds to both Wollstonecraft and Hartley with his elevation of the feminine, one that envisions new potential for both sexes, emotionally and spiritually. In both cases, the writers share a fascination for the image of the female saviour, and they use terminology and concepts found in Hartley’s work to communicate their views. In being attentive to the shared vocabulary and ideas of these three writers’ works, this thesis highlights the importance of David Hartley and Hartlean culture for the field of Romantic Studies. It also illuminates Observations on Man as a vital contribution to the intellectual context of the 1790s.

Abstract:
Ignorance of the basic principles of music reading was one of the primary obstacles to the improvement of congregational singing in nineteenth-century America. Six separate numeral notation systems arose to provide a simple way for the common man to learn the basic principles of music. Hartley Day developed his own numeral notation system and published six tune-books that enjoyed modest success in the New England area. This thesis examines Day's numeral notation system as it appeared in the Boston Numeral Harmony (1845), and the One-Line Psalmist (1849). It also studies Day's periodical, The Musical Visitor, in which he continually attacked Lowell Mason, possibly leading to Mason's dismissal as Superintendent of Music of Boston's public schools.

Abstract:
Nowadays, due to huge deployment of optical transport networks, a continuous increase towards higher data rates up to 100 Gb/s and beyond is observed. Furthermore, an evolution of the current optical networks is forecasted, acquiring new functionalities, e.g. elastic spectrum assignment for the optical signals. The target for these new challenges in transmission is to find techniques ready to deal with a growth of demand for bandwidth continuously asked by network operators, for whom the standard systems do not meet the new functionalities while higher rates are being set up. A solution for covering all of those needs is to adapt techniques capable to deal with such enormous data rates, and ensuring the same high efficiency for long distances and mitigate the optical impairments accumulated along the transmission path. Additionally, these transmission techniques are expected to provide some degree of flexibility, in order to enhance the network flexibility. A promising technology that can fully cope with those requires is the coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM). CO-OFDM provides several advantages, namely high sensitivity and spectral efficiency, simple integration and possibility to fully recover a signal in phase, amplitude and polarization. These systems are composed by digital signal processing (DSP) blocks that easily process data and can equalize and compensate the main impairments, providing high tolerance for dispersion effects. However, CO-OFDM systems are not free from drawbacks. Their high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduce their tolerance to nonlinearities. Furthermore, CO-OFDM systems are sensitive to any frequency shift and phase offset. Hence, a constant envelope optical OFDM (CE-OFDM) is proposed for significantly reducing the PAPR and solving high sensitivity to nonlinear impairments. It consists in a phase modulated discrete multi-tone signal, which is coherently detected at the receiver side. An alternative transform, the discrete Hartley transform, is proposed to speed up calculations in the DSP and eliminate the need to have a Hermitian symmetry. The optical CE-OFDM by its unique flexibility and rate scalability turns out as a great technology applicable to different configurations, ranging from access to core networks. In case of access solutions, several cases are investigated. First, the optical CE-OFDM is applied for radio access network signals delivery by means of a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) overlay in deployed access architecture. A decomposed radio access network is deployed over an existing standard passive optical network (PON), capable to avoid interference and cross talks with access signals between network clients. The system exhibited narrow channel spacing, while reducing losses fed into the access equipment path. Next, a full duplex 10 Gb/s bidirectional PON transmission over a single wavelength with RSOA based ONU is investigated. The key point of that system is the upstream transmission, which is achieved re-modulating the phase of a downstream intensity modulated signal after proper saturation. The reported sensitivity performances show a power budget matching the PON standards and an OSNR easy to reach on non-amplified PON. Next, a flexible metropolitan area network of up to 100km with traffic add/drop using WDM is investigated. There the narrowing effect of the optical filters is studied. Finally, an elastic upgrade of the existing Telefonica model of the Spanish national core network is proposed. For that, the transceiver architecture is proposed to be operated featuring polarization multiplexing. Respect to the existing fixed grid, the flexible approach (enabled by the CE-OFDM transceiver) results into reduced bandwidth occupancy and low OSNR requirement.

Abstract:
Bronchogenic carcinoma (lung cancer) is a major source of morbidity and mortality in industrialized nations. Although bronchogenic carcinoma is largely a preventable neoplasm, it will undoubtedly remain a major medical concern throughout this century, and considerable effort needs to be directed towards its early detection, establishing effective treatment, and understanding the neoplastic process. The objective of this study was to develop a practical and reliable model of localized bronchogenic carcinoma in laboratory rodents. This was done by impregnating cotton threads with the potent carcinogen, benzo(a)pyrene (BP). These BP-impregnated threads were then coated with a silicone rubber sheath to control the release of BP from the threads. The prepared threads were sewn around four cartilage rings in the ventral tracheal wall of guinea pigs and hamsters. The animals were sacrificed periodically, and two histopathologists graded the tracheal epithelium adjacent to the thread. The first experiment consisted of 94 Camm-Hartley guinea pigs: 48 experimental animals with BP-impregnated threads and 46 control animals with non-impregnated threads. The second experiment consisted of 70 Golden Syrian hamsters: 54 experimental and 16 control animals. The data showed that the implantation of the thread in the trachea induced a regenerative hyperplasia of the epithelium, and that the BP initiated carcinogenesis. Squamous metaplasia and progressive intraepithelial neoplasia (IEN) was evident prior to the development of squamous cell carcinoma (CA). In the experimental guinea pigs, only one guinea pig developed an invasive CA at 265 days. In the experimental hamsters, the first CA was seen at 55 days and after 120 days, 65% of the animals showed histopathologic evidence of CA. Most of the hamsters with CA also had spindle cell tumors in the tracheal stroma. The control hamsters and guinea pigs did not develop IEN, and the mature respiratory epithelium was reconstituted. We conclude that this method produced localized, readily accessible preneoplastic and neoplastic lesion in the trachea of hamsters, and to a lesser extent in guinea pigs. The model should prove useful in the study of tumor ultrastructure, the immunologic response to cancer, and the relationship of diet to cancer.

Abstract:
Hal Hartley’s films are organised around and characterised by issues of performance.  This thesis examines the key aesthetic and thematic consequences of the emphasis on performance in Hartley’s work, wherein the two are seen as fundamentally interlocking.  Hartley’s use of a multitude of different performing styles, including alienated acting, dancing, singing and abstract gestural movement, develops and sustains a contextual discourse on style, narrative and culture.  This centrality of performance in Hartley’s oeuvre, the thesis argues, simultaneously explores both the performance of the film performer and the performance of the subject in socio-cultural spheres.  The performance of the text and the performances of the performers are exposed as analogous on aesthetic, social and cultural levels where the performer in front of the camera is made congruent with the social performer before the public eye.  Looking closely at the role played by performance and the performer in Hartley’s presentation of gesture, dance and violence, the thesis examines the manner in which his films utilise paradigmatic modes of performance to emphasise the materiality of the cinematic body and the social and cultural consequences of performing in narrative spaces.  Drawing on theories of aesthetic and socio-anthropological performance, the thesis argues that Hartley’s films exist in a gap between realism and abstraction and examine the performances of both the exposed, abstract performer and the character within the diegetic space, whose performance is contingent upon the articulation of socio-cultural signs relating to gender, sexual, national and cultural difference.  The central focus on issues of performance allows the thesis to explore Hartley’s broader concerns regarding cultural performance, such as the schism between personal and public images, the consumption and circulation of knowledge and the commodification of body and image.

Abstract:
Hal Hartley, an American film-maker, takes generic structures and turns them into something unique where colour, an essential visual ingredient, is a discourse on parody as well as a discourse on aesthetics. After having summed up the main scientific theories of light and colour, this work deals with the philosophical and aesthetic aspect of colour in general and considers the technical experimentations which gave birth to the first film in colour and the corresponding aesthetic trends. It analyses, through the study of a number of American films in black and white and in colour, chosen for their specific palette, the Gangster, the " Film Noir " and the Western which constitute the basic codes subverted by HAL HARTLEY's postmodernism. Beyond the realistic polychromy, the deconstruction of films aims at exploring the aesthetic power of colour, reaching pure abstraction, the blue, the red and the yellow springing from the moving image as from an Abstract Expressionist painting

Abstract:
Art History
M.A.
Homoerotic images date back as early as 800 BCE in Persian art. Examples of homoeroticism in the arts continue in the works of the Greeks and Romans. A sharp decline in the subject coincided with the rise of Christianity and the demonization of homosexuality in Europe between 300-1000 CE. This notion of homosexuality as depraved and sinful behavior became embedded in European culture for over a millennium, and some parts of the world still believe this to be true. Criminalization of homosexuality forced most homosexual artists to hide any references to their own sexuality in their works, a practice known as “encoding,” which allowed for symbols to be hidden “in plain sight” and without context. Among the most prominent mainstream artists to utilize homosexual coding in his work was the modern American artist Marsden Hartley. Through the hidden symbols in the 1914-1915 “War Images” of his “Amerika” series, Hartley expressed his grief for his likely lover Karl van Freyberg, who had passed away following the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. Following in the footsteps of Hartley queer artists working in later generations utilized similar methods of encoding to express their sexuality in a guarded fashion. Operating in the 1950s and 60s, the artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns used varying methods of encoding to disguise references to their sexuality in their work. Such encoding would become a major theme of the “queer aesthetic,” where queer artists encoded symbols through semiotic methods such as floating or dual signifiers to convey their homosexuality in a covert way. In pioneering the concept of encoding, Marsden Hartley gave several generations of artists a means of expressing their sexuality in their works without being fully “out of the closet,” or revealing their sexual identity.

Abstract:
The intention of the present work is to make a reading of the novel The Go- Between, by the British writer, L.P. Hartley, in the form of a journey through the strange country of the protagonist/ narrator´s own past. Such reading comes as an accepted invitation to make the trip together with the narrator, who aesthetically leaves suggestions under the form of tricks, fragments of veiled messages, ambiguous expressions, shadows, gaps on his way. However, Mercury, the messenger of the ancient Gods – the protector of the travelers, the trickster is now is an indistinct being, whose image and function has undergone great transformations during the journey until modern times. Wars, remains of traumatic collective and personal experiences, are visualized in form of substantial fragmented material proper for narrative throughout the unstable route of the melancholy protagonist. Nietzsche and Walter Benjamin provide the basic theoretical support throughout the route.

Abstract:
An analysis of American independent cinema from 1990 until 2007, with an emphasis on these films? relationship to the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. There is a uniquely American tendency to use cinema to reevaluate marriage that was most clearly evident in the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s, this thesis contends that this tendency has emphatically reemerged in American independent cinema since 1990. Using detailed analyses of films that most clearly evidence the persistence of this theme, this thesis explores, in-depth, four films: Hal Hartley?s Trust (1990), Richard Linklater?s Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), and Aaron Katz?s Quiet City (2007). These four films combine to form a coherent vision of a new perspective on romantic coupling, uniting to together show what they are rebelling against, what their new relationships should be built upon, and, finally, what the new kind of relationship that they present can look like. The definitively American theme that is delineated in these four films not only forms a clear connection to the history of American cinema, but also shows how new generations approach the essential questions implicit in coupling and marriage.

Abstract:
The first part of this work describes the chemical investigation of a new neocaledonian endemic species of Zanthoxylum, Zanthoxylum unifoliolatum. From the bark of Zanthoxylum unifoliolatum T. G. Hartley, ined, were isolated one coumarin and twelve alkaloids, two furoquinolines and ten benzo[c]phenanthridines. Two compounds of the benzo[c]phenanthridine series are new and were determined on the basic of the spectral data as the 6-methoxynoravicine and the 6-methoxynornitidine. The alkaloid acronycine ( 6-methoxy-3,3,12-trimethyl-3,12-dihydro-7H-pyrano-[2,3-c]acridin-7-one ), first isolated from Acronychia baueri Schott (Rutaceae), was subsequently shown to exhibit a broad spectrum of activity against numerous experimental tumors models. Neverthless, clinical trials gave only poor results, probably due to the moderate potency of this alkaloid. Further on, structural analogues with an additional aromatic ring linearly fused on the natural alkaloid skeleton were developed, and several cis-1,2-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-3,3,14-trimethyl-1,2,3,14-tetrahydro-7H-benzo[b]pyrano[3,2-h]acridin-7-one diesters proved even more potent. Among them, the cis-1,2-diacetate, currently under preclinical development under the code S 23906-1, and two series of amino derivatives have been prepared. Their in vitro cytotoxic activities have been evaluated against the murine L1210 leukemia cell line and the human colon tumor HT29, and are shown to exhibit cytotoxic activities comparable to those of their benzo[b]acronycine counterparts. One of the compounds is currently evaluating in vivo against the tumors colon 38 in mice

With society I mean our culture, attitudes and history. Do people, especially young people, have a more positive attitudetowards the Internet and has the fact that we, as a country, were among the first to use theInternet anything to do with it.Material/Method: Data collected from books, newspapers and articles from several sites onthe internet. I’ll use the information I’ve gathered to try to find an answer to my givenproblems for the paper. To mark off my problem and information gathering I’ve decided touse three research questions which my work will circle around.Main Result: You can clearly tell that Sweden has a great climate for social media services tobe created. Sweden, as a country, had access to computers and internet in a very early stageand took great advantage of that. Their culture encourages creativity which is important andpeople in Sweden aren’t afraid to run into problems. Abstract:
A new circuit is proposed that uses an RC-CR filter in a feedback configuration to achieve a wideband precision quadrature phase shift with constant amplitude response. Such a circuit can be used to perform image rejection in a low IF receiver using the Hartley method. Simulation results show that the circuit can achieve an average image rejection ratio of 50 dB over a 16 MHz bandwidth. The feedback loop enables the circuit to maintain high accuracy over process and temperature.

Abstract:
This study deals with trombone soloists and music of nineteenth-century Germany. Much of the discussion is based on the influence of two trombone virtuosos, Carl Traugott Queisser (1800-1846) and Friedrich August Belcke (1795- 1874) . Finally, a style and form analysis is given of several representative trombone compositions of the period. These include Ferdinand David's Concertino. Op. 4, Friedebald Grafe's Concerto. and Josef Serafin Alschausky's Concerto No. I.

Abstract:
The three recitals consisted of performances of original eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century solo works for trombone with the exception of Lyric Suite for Euphonium and Piano by Donald White, Divertimento for Trumpet, Trombone and Piano by Boris Blacher, and Dialogue and Dance for Trombone and Tuba by Newel Kay Brown. The premiere performance of Straight As An Arrow for B-flat-F Trombone and Prepared Tape by Ronn Cox and Dean Crocker was also included. After presenting a brief biography and discussing Gordon Jacob's (1895-1984) stylistic influences, the lecture continues with a Tonal, Motivic and Formal analysis of his three works for solo tenor trombone: Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, Concertino for Trombone and Wind Orchestra, and the Trombone Sonata. Tonality, modality, polymodality and free association of pitches are elements that are present at one time or another in these compositions. Jacob's inclination for using the folk song style is evident in his writing, especially in the slow movements. Introductions, transition areas, and secondary themes, with tonally ambiguous harmonies and instrumental concepts of melodies, create a tension that is released by the return to tonality in the areas that follow. Treatment of rhythmic and melodic motives helps produce the special quality found in Gordon Jacob's compositions. Over half the themes in the works being investigated are built around motivic development. Neoclassicism results from the use of forms rooted in earlier centuries, but the choice of key centers gives these forms a new life. Jacob's composition of absolute music, as well as his use of the older compositional techniques of parallel harmonies and slow introductions, reflect neoclassical practices. The performance of Jacob's pieces is facilitated by his use of musical materials idiomatic to the instrument.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Johann Joseph Fux's influence on the development of eighteenth-century alto trombone literature is significant. His music, when compared with that of other composers who wrote for the alto trombone before 1730, reveals a more elaborate and frequent use of the instrument. Many of Fux's compositions call for alto, tenor, or bass trombone, but his Sonata a Quattro K. 347 and Alma Redemptoris Mater K. 186 are of particular interest in regard to the composer's treatment of the alto trombone. This study points out the technical demands placed on the trombonist in Fux's works as compared to such contemporary composers as Antonio Caldara and Marc'Antonio Ziani. The primary goal of this study is to substantiate the importance of Fux's role in the development of the alto trombone repertoire. Published and unpublished works by Fux that significantly incorporate the instrument have been studied and compared to compositions of his contemporaries. A thorough discussion of Sonata a Quattro and Alma Redemptoris Mater illustrates the technical aspects of his alto trombone writing. The secondary goal of this study is to create a performing edition of Sonata a Quattro and Alma Redemptoris Mater. The existing editions in Denkmaler der Tonkunst in Osterreich and Johann Joseph Fux, Samtliche Werke are less than complete. There are no individual parts for performers, and tempo indications for several movements are missing. Mistakes in the parts of Sonata a Quattro and discrepancies between the figured bass and continuo realization have been corrected for the creation of a new edition. Tempo, ornamentation, instruments, and articulation are also discussed to assist in the presentation of an historically informed performance of the Sonata a Quattro and Alma Redemptoris Mater.

Abstract:
The focus of this dissertation is the political career of R. Vance Hartke, Democratic Senator from Indiana 1958-1976. The areas of emphasis include Hartke's role in the creation of the Veterans' Affairs Committee of the Senate and his chairmanship of the Committee, several of the controversies of his career, and his political style and philosophy.Books and articles written by Hartke were used extensively as were various newspapers and the Conqressional Record. Information was also obtained from interviews with Hartke and Frank Brizzi, who was staff director of the Veterans' Affairs Committee during Hartke's term as chairman. That Hartke philosophically was a liberal and politically was a risk-taker are among the conclusions reached in this study. Hartke's strongest asset in winning election to the Senate three times in a relatively conservative state was an energetic and personalized political style. Despite the controversies which surrounded Hartke and some apparent conflicts of interest," there is no evidence he committed illegal or unethical acts. Hartke used his power as chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee of the Senate to infuse his liberal ideology into public policy for American veterans. Furthermore, he expanded veterans' benefits during his tenure.
