Abstract Building upon recent phraseological studies on Old High and Middle High German texts, the alliterating word pairs in the early works of Hartmann von Aue are catalogued and analyzed philologically, thus contributing to an emerging complete listing of the paired rhetorical expressions through the Early Middle High German period. The first extant courtly Arthurian romance, Hartmann's Erec, a shorter piece of his known as Diu Klage, and a handful of poems he composed are by all indications from the last decade of the twelfth century, despite later manuscript transmission. Each pair is listed, described in the context in which it appears, and compared with any extant pairs from earlier German works. What emerge are insights into the evolution of these expressions, in some cases through centuries. On the one hand, Hartmann employs alliterating expressions that date to the Old High German period, while on the other hand apparently creating new ones. As in findings in earlier texts, pairs recorded on multiple occasions are likely to have been used by other authors. Typical for medieval German texts – when compared to similar modern expressions – is the insight that there is a fair amount of variation concerning the sequence of the alliterating elements and/or the inclusion of morpho-syntactic modifiers such as pronouns, possessives, adjectives, or adverbs. Modern translations of Hartmann's works into German and English show just how varied these phrases can appear in translation. When known, later examples of the alliterating word-pairs are cited, albeit for obvious reasons only in an incomplete fashion. The long-term project is designed to continue to chart the emergence of the early German alliterating word-pairs chronologically.

Abstract This study presents a first-time complete accounting and analysis of the alliterating word-pairs in Wolfram’s “Willehalm,” “Titurel,” and his poetry, representing the completion of a project to survey Wolframs’ complete oeuvre. Each pair is described philologically within the work in which it appears, relevant earlier or parallel occurrences are noted, and on occasion the further life of the pair is discussed. A complete listing integrates the 98 pairs from “Parzival.” This rounds out studies of the major Middle High German classical works of courtly literature, cataloguing Wolfram’s use of the rhetorical device following similar studies of Hartmann von Aue and Gottfried von Strassburg.

Abstract:
This article investigates the social isolation of the protagonist in a crisis using the example of Iwein by Hartmann von Aue. It is an Arthurian novel written around 1203 which depicts the adventures of the knight Iwein of the Round Table. The novel embodies various medieval topics such as the struggle for honour, loyalty, knight’s duties and virtues, challenges, mythical and fantastic beasts, etc. Among these subjects, there is also the so-called crisis of a hero, which is represented by social isolation and mental illness, i. e. by the knight’s insane behaviour. Thus, the depiction of Iwein's isolation will be interpreted, analysed and critically evaluated in relation to his illness and recovery in the context of the crisis. In addition, the function and the representation of this isolation in regard to the knighthood and court society of the time will also be examined. Therefore, this article attempts to answer the following questions: How is Iwein's social isolation depicted during his crisis and what role does this isolation play during the crisis in terms of his illness and recovery? What is the difference between isolation, loneliness and marginalisation in this novel? In this paper, however, it is assumed that Iwein's isolation plays a crucial role in Iwein's illness and recovery and that his madness can only be interpreted as a symptom of this isolation. In this way, his insane episode is observed in relation to his isolation and not separately. The power of isolation does not lie in the loneliness, but in the reflection of the solitude, which allows the individuum to rebalance themselves, far from the disruptions of everyday life. After all, even today, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, things are out of balance. However, this pandemic has brought to light that even now, perhaps more than ever, one has the possibility to reconnect with oneself and with one's nature due to the isolation.

Es geht darum, wie ja der Untertitel deutlich ankündigt, die zwei arturischen Romane Erec und Iwein, die religiöse Versnovelle Gregorius und die mehr weltlich orientierte Versnovelle Der arme Heinrich erneut einer kritischen Sichtung zu unterziehen und sie so zu diskutieren, dass vor allem das studentische Publikum den größten Nutzen daraus ziehen kann. Nicht dass dies ein neuer Ansatz wäre, handelt es sich ja schließlich um die mit beliebtesten mittelhochdeutschen Dichtungen, die stets noch in zahllosen Seminaren u.a. Veranstaltungen behandelt werden. Aber Lieb bemüht sich darum, eine frische Behandlung anzubieten, indem er einerseits die großen Themen, Strukturen, Motive und Inhalte kritisch diskutiert und andererseits, wenn auch etwas unterschwellig, die neueste Forschung miteinbezieht. Sehr viel an neuen Einsichten ist damit zwar nicht gewonnen, aber darin besteht ja letztlich nicht die Absicht.

The 'Arme Heinrich' is usually interpreted as fairytale or legend. If one takes the term gemahel seriously and sees the relationship between Heinrich and the girl as a kind of marriage, based on reciprocal triuwe, which is disturbed by the selfish offer and acceptance of self-sacrifice, but which is restored when this solution is subsequently rejected, then the work seems rather to be in conformity with Hartmann's romances. Der 'Arme Heinrich' wird zumeist als Märchen oder Legende interpretiert. Abstract:
The analysis of historical, culturally motivated ideas about the German knight, which are objectified in the language not only in conventional, unified standards, but primarily in socio-ethnocultural assessments and stereotypes, is presented. The material of the study was German knightly novels: “Tristan” (“Tristan”) by Gottfried of Strasbourg, “Poor Heinrich” (“Der arme Heinrich”) by Hartmann von Aue, “Eneasroman” by Heinrich von Veldeke. Particular attention is paid to the study of indicators of the national specificity of the image of the German knight. It is proved in the work that the actualization of lexical units that serve to represent the image of a knight is largely specific and due to the genre specificity of Western European literature texts of the Middle Ages. It is stated that the knowledge of medieval German culture bearers about the surrounding reality, objectified by the semantics and pragmatics of linguistic and speech units, structures, compositions, united as a whole by the characteristics of the surrounding world are accumulated in the artistic picture of the world in the Middle Ages. It is concluded that the image of a knight embodies the complex of worldview coordinates and values of the knightly estate, which are recorded in a verbal (artistic) text in the form of a specially organized system of knowledge and ideas about the world.
