Abstract:
Background: The notch of Harty is a normal variant radiologically and incidentally diagnosed finding but can be mistaken as pathology. Objective: To identify the incidence and characteristic findings of the notch of Harty.Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 121 patients referred to the Radiology department, MRI unit, to undergo ankle MRI through a one-year period (January to December 2020). Cases with significant ankle lesions were excluded. All MRI studies were performed on 1.5 T MR scanners (Aera, Siemens, Arlington). Results: The notch of Harty was present in 35.5% patients; their age ranged from 5-83 years with a mean age of 38.20 years. The average width of the notch was 5.65mm while the mean depth was 1.04 mm. There was no significant correlation between the presence of the notch of Harty and findings such as rheumatic arthritis, minor trauma, chondral thinning. However, there was significant correlation between the presence of the notch of Harty and subjacent subchondral sclerosis. Conclusion: The notch of Harty was present among a considerable number of cases with no sex predominance. The notch might be misinterpreted by radiologists as true osteochondral lesions, thus, familiarity with location and appearance of these pseudodefects will avoid their misinterpretation. Keywords: The notch of Harty, pseudodefects, MRI, tibial plafond, osteochondral lesions

Abstract:
Background: The aim of this study was to report the incidence of associated osteochondral lesions (OCLs) on postop CTs, which may benefit from arthroscopic treatment, in patients with rotational type ankle fractures with syndesmotic injury. The diagnosis and treatment of associated OCLs may be an additional benefit of the use of arthroscopy in the management of rotational type ankle fractures with syndesmotic injury. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data of a prospective cohort study of patients who underwent open reduction and surgical fixation of an ankle fracture with syndesmotic injury. These patients underwent routine bilateral postoperative CT assessment. Two independent observers classified ankle fractures according to Weber and OCLs according to the classification system by Berndt and Harty. Fifty-nine patients were included. There were 19 (32%) Weber B type ankle fractures and 39 (66%) Weber C type fractures. One patient (2%) had fixation for a medial malleolus fracture and syndesmotic rupture without fibula fracture. Results: Talar OCLs were present in 8 patients (14%). In one patient, 2 OCLs were found, which resulted in a total of 9 lesions. Two lesions were found on the medial side, both anterior. The other 7 were located laterally, of which 1 was anterior, 3 central, and 3 posterior on the talus. According to the Berndt and Harty classification, 1 was classified as stage I, 4 as stage III, and 4 as stage IV. Conclusion: The prevalence of OCLs in ankle fractures with syndesmotic instability was 14%. We believe that lesions were arthroscopically accessible in 6 patients (10%). Moreover, most lesions were located on the lateral dome, and thus also potentially approachable through an anterolateral arthrotomy during open reduction and internal fixation. The majority of OCLs found in this series were Berndt and Harty type III or IV, and so likely would preferably have been addressed during the index procedure. Level of Evidence: Level III, diagnostic cohort study.

Abstract:
Any consideration of William Walton's Second Symphony should begin with some mention of its predecessor, first performed complete in November, 1935, twenty-five years before No.2. The First Symphony created an enormous impact, coming soon after the successes of the Viola Concerto of 1929 and the oratorio Belshazzar's Feast of 1931. The Symphony's vast scale, its emotional power and fierce utterance, allied to an impressive consistency of style, conspired to declare a work of originality and almost instantaneous appeal. An early Decca recording of it under Sir Hamilton Harty, who had conducted the first performances, enabled the Symphony to be heard worldwide.

Abstract:
Wide application of cell therapy particularly platelet enriched plasma (PRP) in modern orthopaedics enabled to improved treatment results in certain orthopaedic diseases and injury consequences. Treatment results for 7 patients (2 men and 5 women) with osteochondral lesions of talus (OLT) are presented. Mean age of patients was 26 years, mean duration of disease — 4 years. By Brendt and Harty roentgenologic classification I—II degree of OLT was diagnosed in 1 and III—IV degree — in 6 patients. In all patients mosaic chondroplasty of talus with implantation of PRP gel was performed. Postoperatively mean AOFAS index raised from 53 to 92. Follow up period made up around 2 years.

Abstract:
Surgical treatment of posteromedial talar dome lesions is frequently necessary for Berndt and Harty grade IV osteochondral defects and nondisplaced osteochondral fragments resistant to conservative modalities. When operative intervention is indicated, the approach and management can be complicated by the location and extent of the injury. The operative technique we advocate allows direct exposure of the lesion and minimizes damage to healthy articular cartilage and surrounding soft tissue. Use of a drill guide assists the surgeon in precisely placing a transmalleolar portal through the tibia for subchondral drilling of osteochondral defects when the lesions are inaccessible through traditional arthroscopic portals. Plummer, Declan. "'Music based on worth' : the conducting career of Sir Hamilton Harty." Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.557640.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis assesses the conducting career of Sir Hamilton Harty, particularly his conductorship with the Halle Orchestra from 1920 to 1933, and places his career in the context of the social, economic and political changes brought about by World War I, the introduction of mass culture, and the effects of the Great Depression. The thesis re-examines Harty's legacy: reviews from numerous newspapers and journals demonstrate the quality of his conducting and the supreme standards he achieved with the Halle Orchestra; and a detailed study of the Halle programmes and the orchestra's finances from 1920 to 1933 shows that, by comparison to other British orchestras, Harty was one of the most catholic conductors in Britain who laboured under particularly difficult financial restrictions. The thesis is structured in eight chapters. Chapters one to three discuss Harty's career prior to his Halle appointment in 1920. They explain how his conservative aesthetic beliefs, catholic tastes, and conducting abilities were shaped by his informal education in Ireland, the artistic limitations of Belfast and Dublin in the late nineteenth century, his career as an accompanist in Dublin and London and his engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Halle Orchestra from 1911 to 1919. Chapters four to six discuss Harty's conductorship with the Halle Orchestra from 1920 and 1933, and include an examination of the orchestra's first BBC broadcasts and gramophone recordings, reviews of Harty's conducting and the structure of his programmes. Chapter seven discusses Harty's artistic beliefs, demonstrating how they represented an outdated reaction to modernism, and his conducting style, including comparisons with other contemporary conductors. Chapter eight discusses Harty's tours in America and Australia from 1931 to 1936 in detail and provides additional accounts of his conducting abilities. Appendices, music examples, figures and a select bibliography are included.

Abstract:
Against the backdrop of the Gaelic Revival and the foundation of the Irish Free State Hamilton Harty plied his trade as an organist, pianist, conductor and composer. It is his compositional output that is the focus of this thesis, and, more specifically, his songs, Sea Wrack, My Lagan Love and A Cradle Song. Both Harty and Herbert Hughes wrote an accompaniment for the folk-song My Lagan Love and set to music the poem “A Cradle Song”—both Harty and Charles Villiers Stanford set to music the poem “Sea Wrack”, all of which make for an interesting comparison. The purpose of this investigation is to explore Harty’s aforementioned three works with a view to finding evidence for the development of Harty’s compositional voice. Despite the publication in 2013 of Jeremy Dibble’s substantial volume, Hamilton Harty: Musical Polymath, the opportunity remains to analyse individual works in a detailed manner. Therefore, this paper will examine features such as genre, motif, harmony, text-music relationship and Irish traditional music in the context of nationalism. It is my contention that Harty’s musical language developed a greater level of complexity as he synthesized more elements identifiable with Irish music, such as ornamentation, modal harmony, inflection and pentatonicism, in combination with word painting and musical symbolism, in the writing of recognisable genres such as a parlour song, a folk-song and a lullaby. My analysis clarifies Harty’s position on the continuum from Anglo-Irish to Irish composers and provides a response to remarks such as Raymond Warren’s claim that Harty’s nationalism was in melody alone.

Memel, Jonathan Godshaw. "Thomas Hardy and education." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/21848.

Full text
Abstract:
Thomas Hardy wrote during a time of extraordinary growth in British education when the purposes of learning were being passionately questioned. This thesis situates Hardy’s writing both within and beyond these debates, showing how his writing avows a Victorian fascination with education while contesting its often rigid actualization in nineteenth-century society. This project places new emphasis on the range of educationalists that Hardy counted as friends. These included the dialect poet and early-Victorian schoolmaster, William Barnes; the influential architect of the 1870s board schools, Thomas Roger Smith; and the leader of late-century reforms to female teacher training colleges, Joshua Fitch. Caught between life in rural surroundings and systemized forms of education, Hardy's characters frequently endure dislocation from community and estrangement from natural environments as penalties of their intellectual development. Much previous scholarship has for this reason claimed education as a source of despair in Hardy’s writing. However, this thesis reveals the people and experiences which rigid institutions exclude, and foregrounds Hardy’s depiction of the natural environment as an alternative source of learning. Exploring Hardy's representations of education as both reflective of contemporary change and suggestive of new possibilities, chapters focus on aspects of education most resonant with Hardy's own life and central to his fiction, including the professionalization and training of schoolmistresses, the working-class movement for liberal education, educational architecture, and rural forms of education. By exploring connections between fiction and social and political concerns, the thesis demonstrates how the idea of education relates to some key characteristics of Hardy's writing, for example the observant onlooker and the native returned.

Abstract:
Abstract The continued development of HART (Human Assistive RoboT) is presented in this paper. HART has been designed and built by ART (Assistive Robot Team) in University of Hartford since 2017. To enable the robot to manipulate various control inputs of off-the-shelf vehicles with different sizes and structures in the market, HARTs mechanical design was focused on the achievement of kinematic re-scalability as its main technical design requirement. In this study, the mechanical design upgrade which can increase the robots power and dexterousness to control the steering wheel of the assigned vehicle is mainly described. For this, the third arm which is newly designed with passive joints and expendable links is built and added to HART. Next, HARTs new sensor head which is also redesigned for advancement of its perception capability is introduced in this paper. Lastly, the upgraded robot is tested and evaluated in human-centered environments which include both indoor and outdoor task spaces.

Abstract:
Harry Potter is a blockbuster. Reading the books from the series, one can find challenges and problems every adolescent confronts with. Harry faces real-world challenges, such as: racism, status in society, corruption. Reading about Harry Potter’s experiences, the choices he faces and the dilemmas he has empowers the reader (the learner) to find a way through his/her own choices and dilemmas. Education through active citizenship means empowering the learners to take part actively in society and to think critically about certain issues in society. Harry Potter books are a good resource for educators in attaining active citizenship skills.
