The purposes of this study explore the causes of willingness of stakeholders’ distinction to Majia Harvest Festival through the service gap model to understand the gap between expectation and evaluation to find solution and to improve the quality of the event. This study uses case-study method through the collection of secondary data, field observations, in-depth interviews and open-ended questionnaires; qualitative data coding and inductive analyses were conducted. Key findings are: (1) five motivation factors were identified that affect willingness to participate, including “attractiveness”, “cultural exploration”, “social net working”, “family reunion”, and “novel experience”.(2) the quality gap between expectations and satisfaction, which lies the key issue in the cultural symbols and meaninings were not delivered in that event. In practiccal implementations, this study suggests that (1) event organizers should coordinate the event with the help of cultural and spiritual leaders’s influences, and the use of their symbolic relevance to Paiwan cultural heritage. Carefully select the most suitable day to host the event (e.g., on weekend) which will increase participation and attract young generation participants ;(2)event organizers and staff must injected cultural significance and meanings into the event content and activities, resonance and emotion arousal of stakeholders may achieve greater cultural identity, self-identification, and cultural confidence. By doing so, stakeholders will take proud of Majia and the Paiwan, proactive participation can last for the long term. (3)The first two implementation strategies need to be coordinated with appropriate event host date to be effectively narrow the quality gap.

Taiwan Aboriginal is limited by the rapid industrial economic development, forcing the former agriculture as the mainstay of the economy of social structure, steering to the business industry towards economic self-reliance. Making the most of the indigenous peoples migrate to metropolitan area, such as Amis come to metropolitan area for school and employment. Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) is used to conduct the data analysis. The results of this research show that A quadrant (continue to maintain our advantage), Amis think we can strengthen ethnic identity and self-affirmation; B quadrant (meaningless advantage analysis), the traditional culture and ethnic recognition is high, but lower willingness to participate; C quadrant (lower precedence analysis), the perception of various dimension are secondary or necessity are not high; D quadrant (strengthened to improve important analysis), the public sector grant Harvest Festival activities generally with low satisfaction. Regarding interviews analysis, first public sector budgeting (intervention), ambitious people (go-between), to promote the Harvest Festival activities continue to be in the city; due to the exigencies of highly urbanized, the younger groups need to continue to strengthen the cultural identity and concern, in order to avoid cultural recognition fritter away. Finally, since the younger population is no longer to respect culture transmission. Hope to educate young ethnic understanding of cultural and transmission significance. A new generation of aboriginal faced with the loss of traditional culture and ethnic identity crisis, causing cultural fault serious problem and directly impact Amis continuation of traditional culture. Tradition should be a driving force, make the tribe to know what their cultural traditions are? As the aboriginal one, regardless move to somewhere else or homeland, should have a sense of mission and strive for the continuation of their own cultural heritage, to avoid valuable traditional culture disappeared in history. In the final conclusion, "Culture sustainable transmission, ethnic harmony communion" is becoming the trend through public-private sector co-operation. Personal and tribal have come to do their ability for cultural infusion of new life to sustainable transmission. Key word: Aboriginal, Urban Amis, Importance Performance Analysis

In particular, the cultural and creative industry was one of the six key emerging industries in recent years. All local governments tried to hold various activities with local characteristics of the festival and with the new packaging "cultural industry, industrial culture" to increase tourism consumption. This study, targeting at Harvest Festival of Fatt’an Amis from Hualian County, explored the suitability of experiential marketing factors and later applied it with Kano two-dimensional quality analysis to know the availability of the two-dimensional characteristics. Furthermore, a Harvest Festival of Fatt’an Amis experiential marketing strategy was developed. It is found that most of the participants in Harvest Festival of Fatt’an Amis had the concept of two-dimensional quality. Therefore, two-dimensional form instead of one-dimensional form should be considered in the quality factors planning. From the result of Kano two-dimensional quality model analysis in Harvest Festival of Fatt’an Amis, the attractive quality are most for the related experience, the increase of the coefficient in the highest satisfaction dimensions is the sense experience. It would be recommended that the business owner should pay special intentions to the planning of this factor.

The Harvest Festival, as one of the cultural resources, not only belongs to the environmental resources, it is also a part of non-market goods. The tourism opportunities it creates have the characteristics of public goods and non-trading market price as well. Because, the Harvest Festival is the most treasured cultural resources to the Aborigine in Taiwan, how to measure its value by monetary numbers so as to serve as the reference for government to objectively and fairly allocate annual budget to support this festival was the major purpose to conduct this research. The Contingent Valuation method (CVM) was applied to measure the total benefits of the Harvest Festival, including use and non-use value, and the later one was divided into three kinds, including existence value, option value and bequest value. According to the CVM, a virtual market was designed in a questionnaire survey on site to provide randomly selected respondents with several assumptive questions about the value of the Amis’ Harvest Festival. Data were collected by asking those respondents to express their perceived value of the festival in terms of their willingness to pay (WTP) to each question. The payment value card method was used by respondents to express their WTP to each question and a virtual Foundation was set up as the place where the WTP went to. The study results have shown as follows: 1. The average use value for each respondent attending the Amis’ Harvest Festival in Hualien city was 764 NT per year; as to the non-use value, the average existence value was 730 NT per year; the average option value was 732 NT per year; the average bequest value was 730 NT per year; and the average total benefit estimated by those different kinds of value was 2959 NT per year. These amounts of different value could serve as a reference for government to allocate reasonable budget to different festivals. 2. The main motivations for the visitor respondents to participate in the Festival were to preserve Amis’ cultural resources and to experience their traditional living custom. It may indicate that the preservation of the Amis’ cultural resources is a very important issue. 3. The respondents’ socio-economic attributes were not the significant factors to affect their WTP to each value measurement. However, such touring characteristics as past experience and the length of staying in the festival would significantly affect their WTP. As to the most influential reason why visitors were willing to pay to attend the festival was Amis’ traditional music and dance. It may indicate that those who are holding the festival could promote this special attraction in their marketing program. In addition, some suggestions for management and operation of the festival were presented in this research for the reference of relevant agencies.

“Fatt’an is a ‘Blackened Tribe’. It is the biggest Amis tribe and it never declines.” Through these words, Fatt’an Amis not only make a declaration of self-identity but also emphasize the long-standing historical status of their tribe to outsiders. “ As the most important medium which can display their self-expression and propagate their culture, all programs and activities in Harvest Festival are well-designed and executed by the age-organization in order to make it more culturally meaningful. The festival include both traditional elements and many creative parts that several modern cultural organizations of Fatt’an Amis perform. In addition to Harvest Festival, these days performances for tourists also become another field in which these cultural organizations of Fatt’an Amis represent their culture and identity. Although the lost parts of culture cannot be completely recovered, the memory about the past and the identity of Fatt’an Amis cannot be erasable In other words, through the annual “Harvest Festival” and touristic activities, culture of Fatt’an Amis can be continuously passed on by cultural performances in various creative forms. The main purpose of this thesis is making a comprehensive description and analysis of the relationship between cultural performance and identity of modern Fatt’an Amis.

The research of present participation and constraints of Amis Harvest Festival via the investigation of Chang-yuan village people Abstract The purpose of this research is to explore and specify the constraints of the present participation of Aboriginal Harvest Festival, via the exploration of Amis aborigines in Chang-yuan community. With the survey, the model investigated is classified into three different groups-people stay in the community, people employed in metropolitan areas, and people educated away from the community. The results of the survey are analyzed by the methods of descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and sheffe’s method. The final outcome of the research is as follows: 1. The influential factors of Chang-yuan village people’s participation motivations are: (1) to develop the team spirit (2) to obtain traditional songs, dances, and ritual ceremonies (3) to cultivate cultural sophistication (4) to develop interpersonal relation (5) to pay respect to Amis ancestors. The influence of the four categories of motivations is in the following order: Intellectual, Social, Competence-Mastery, and Stimulus-Avoidance. 2. According to the results, the impact of the factors of personal background, except for “age” and “marriage condition,” on participation motivations is statistically significant. As for the differences among participation motivations shown in the three different types of participation-the actual and the expectative participation, and whether the tribe people are in charge of the festival-are also statistically significant. 3. The first five predominant factors of Chang-yuan village people’s participation constraints are: (1) being under obligation to jobs (2) being burdened with work and studies (3) a lack of leadership (4) a lack of companions and (5) a lack of information resources. As the obstacles resulted from the three categories of constraints taken into account, the “structural” constraints have the dominant influence over the succeeding two- the interpersonal and the intra-personal constraints. 4. Related to their impact on the participation constraints, the factors of personal background are all statistically significant, except for “gender;” in other words, different personal backgrounds are the primary referential indication of constraints of Chang-yuan village people’s Harvest Festival participation. Similar to the differences among participation motivations obtained from the three different types of participation, those among participation constraints are all statistically significant, too. 5. In general, the correlation between motivations and constraints is found obviously meaningful in the final result. Key words: Aboriginal、Amis、Harvest Festival、participation motivation、 participation constraints

The aim of this research is to study the cultural meaning of Paiwan tribe’s millet harvest festival, and to study the effect of social changes on this bodily practice in the Paiwan tribe of the Sandimen Township. This research uses ethnographic research methods; data are collected through observations during participation and through in-depth interviews. The results are described below. 1. Cultural connotations in the rituals of Paiwan tribe’s millet harvest festival of Sandimen Township a. Paiwan people believe their ancestors have the spiritual power to ensure abundant grain harvest and to protect their descendants. b. The millet harvest festival is a religious practice: For Paiwan people, millet is at the heart of farming rituals. Paiwan people believe that spirits reside inside the millet. c. The word for tribal chief, heir (which is the eldest son), and millet seed is the same in Paiwan dialect: vusam. Heir is the concept of millet seed projected onto the tribal organization, and the core of the tribe is the chief. Commoners, the warrior class, the noble class and the chief form the everlasting embodiment of the eternal Nature. 2. The body culture of Paiwan’s millet harvest festival of Sandimen Township has been weakened due to several reasons: the aboriginal policy during the Japanese occupation, the introduction of extraneous religions that changed the traditional beliefs, and the national education system that eroded the Paiwan sense of cultural identity. The change in Paiwan lifestyle and social changes caused the traditional tribal system to gradually lose their influence. 3. The preservation and promotion of the Paiwan millet harvest festival of Sandimen Township rely on the effective cooperation of the local government, school education, tribal civil groups and tribal members. Lastly, four recommendations were made: the government should promote the Aboriginal Day, the tribal revitalization education in school should include body culture in the school-based curriculum, more emphasis should be put on the ancient society – family - seed vusam.

The culture research is the fundamental of the cultural and creative industries. Some of folk celebrations progresses extremely related to the social environment development. As the different regions, the festivals developed to various localization colors. There are many Taiwan Hakka Festivals developed to a new trend on localization caused by the social environment transformation, after it combined with the local cultures. This study mainly selects two areas in Taiwan - Jhudong of Hishchu county and Fenglin Township of Hualien county, as the research areas. Meanwhile, it selects two Hakka festivals – Tian-Chuan Day and Winter Harvest Festival, as the research activities. This study adopts semi-structure in–depth expert interview. The researchers actually involved in some activities to do observations as the major research methods to record these celebrations. We hope to explore their similarities and differences, advantages and disadvantages, and the impact of localization from those festivals of these two areas based on their artistic value expression, historical background and humane activities etc. This study explored the results and localization on the same festivals under the same policy in the eastern Taiwan Hakka villages and western. There are two research priorities. One is for exploration on the success of the folk song competitions in Tian-Chuan Day. It is able to hold for a half-century continuously, even if some of challenges arose from much homogenization of these celebrations owing to it has been extensively copied or simulated in various Hakka villages. On the other hand, the Winter Harvest Festival was declined gradually caused of the social transformation. The second is for understanding the Hakka culture transformation on the festival localization due to many diverse Hakka groups in one area. We tried to analysis the elements and reasons of the festival localization and the effects on the same festival in two areas. It explored the phenomenon on localization through these two festivals development of these two areas for both of the rise and decline. As the summary of this research, it indicates the directions to promotion the Hakka villages packing with the Hakka cultures. It will be more significant to keep the both of the well festivals and new celebrations. To build and to preserve the Hakka Festival documents, it will be helpful to pass and to extend the cultures to the following generations. The Amis harvest festival is the most significant ceremony and ritual to Amis people, and among the news reports of Taiwan Indigenous Television (hereinafter referred to as “TITV”), many were reported based on cultural viewpoint and community-centered principles. TITV carries the mission of revitalizing indigenous cultures, enhancing public discussion between indigenous peoples and demonstrating the subjectivity of indigenous peoples. Reflecting upon those newswriting principles learned from related researches of indigenous journalism, TITV have fulfilled its purpose by producing culturally appropriate reports and providing counter narratives; however, when encountering controversial incidents within the community, their reports seemingly failed to play the role of “watch dogs” by adopting the principle of reversing mainstream news discourse whereas the reports should lead the community members to internal discussion by revealing inner conflicts of the community. The thesis adopts the cultural value system and the analysis results found that journalists of TITV appeals to the cultural value of “collectivism”, and respects both the community traditions and the taboos of its rituals and ceremonies. “Genders”, “ethnic groups” and “mother tongues” are the major factors to distinguish the “power distance” between journalists and news sources – the distance which journalists seek to diminish by showing their capabilities. Moreover, when covering disputed incidents, the TITV journalists choose the same side as the news room, with the community perspective and to further highlight on the cultural value of “high uncertainty avoidance” instead of pursuing on the instant benefits; in other words, to show the cultural value of “long-term orientation” after thorough consideration in the long run. In addition, while journalists of TITV emphasize on the cultural value of “masculinity“, the news reports also bring forth the phenomenon of losing female presence, to which the author ponders – can men conduct their cultural practices without the off-site labor force from women? After all, with the expectation of objective reports, the author hopes to balancedly present the wisdom from both male and female during ceremonies and rituals.
