Jones, Blake. "Effect of landing size on operational delays for New Zealand harvest operations." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Forestry, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9696.

Full text
Abstract:
Landings are an integral part of New Zealand Harvest operations where extracted trees are processed into logs and loaded out onto trucks. Forest owners need to balance the cost and environmental considerations when designing and constructing landings, with the productivity and safety of the harvesting crew that will use the landing. The objective of this study is to gain a greater understanding of landing size and how they affect forest harvest operations. This study investigates the relationship between landing size and processing delays. A time study was carried out for ten harvest operation

Abstract:
Utilization of woody biomass for energy is expected to increase rapidly and logging residues are a likely feedstock to meet increased demands. Potentials for increased biomass utilization have created concerns regarding possible impacts of using logging residues for energy. The overall goals of this project were to characterize biomass harvesting operations and to evaluate potential impacts on soil erosion and implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for water quality on biomass harvesting sites. Results indicate that biomass harvesting was integrated into a wide range of logging bus

Timber harvesting is an important activity in the state of Kentucky; however, there is still a lack of information about the procedure used by the local loggers. The stump to landing transport of logs with skidders is often the most expensive and time-consuming task in timber harvesting operations. The research content includes felling and bucking operations and yarding operations, those were the major parts on timber harvesting operations in this study. In this work, log taper, log grade and heartwood ratio after timber harvesting operations were also discussed. The third part of this study was to compare the log volume difference between manual log scaling and automatic image recognition method. The timber harvesting op

Farming caused occupational injury is an issue worth concern. The objective of this research is to study human factor engineering related issues and problems about manual harvesting operations for gingers in order to improve the operational procedures or to provide information for potential future development of ginger harvesters. Abstract:
As forest harvesting shifts from old-growth to second-growth stands, profitability is becoming an important issue. In a cooperative project involving Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC), University of British Columbia (UBC) and Canadian Forest Service - Pacific Forestry Center, a model was developed to predict economics of second-growth harvests. The final result that can be obtained with the model is the net revenue produced after logging a second-growth stand. This is computed as a function of stand characteristics, company product requirements and harvest equipment

Limited wireless resources, such as spectrum and maximum power, give rise to various resource allocation problems that are interesting both from theoretical and application viewpoints. While the problems in some of the wireless networking applications are amenable to general resource allocation methods, others require a more specialized approach suited to their unique structural characteristics. We study both types of the problems in this thesis. We start with a general problem of alpha-fair packing, namely, the problem of maximizing sum_j {w_j f_α(x_j)}, where w_j > 0, ∀j, and (i) f_α

Wireless is everywhere. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, implantable medical devices, and many other wireless devices are massively taking part of our everyday activities. On average, an actively digital consumer has three devices. However, most of these wireless devices are small equipped with batteries that are often limited and need to be replaced or recharged. This fact limits the operating lifetime of wireless devices and presents a major challenge in wireless communication. To improve the perpetual energy operation of wireless communication systems, energy harvesting (EH) from the radio fr

Waste heat recovery is a multi-billion-dollar industry with a compound annual growth rate of 8.8% assessed between 2016 to 2024 and low-grade waste heat (< 230oC ± 20oC) makes up 66% of this ubiquitous resource. Thermoelectric generators are preferred for the recovery process because they are cheap and are well suited for this temperature range. They generate power by converting thermal potential to electric potential, known as the Seebeck effect. Since they have no moving parts, they are inherently immune to mechanical failure or an intermittent need for maintenance. How
