Abstract:
Background The massive scale of social media platforms requires an automatic solution for detecting hate speech. These automatic solutions will help reduce the need for manual analysis of content. Most previous literature has cast the hate speech detection problem as a supervised text classification task using classical machine learning methods or, more recently, deep learning methods. However, work investigating this problem in Arabic cyberspace is still limited compared to the published work on English text. Objective This study aims to identify hate speech related to the COVID-19 pandemic posted by Twitter users in the Arab region and to discover the main issues discussed in tweets containing hate speech. Methods We used the ArCOV-19 dataset, an ongoing collection of Arabic tweets related to COVID-19, starting from January 27, 2020. Tweets were analyzed for hate speech using a pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) model; each tweet was given a score between 0 and 1, with 1 being the most hateful text. We also used nonnegative matrix factorization to discover the main issues and topics discussed in hate tweets. Results The analysis of hate speech in Twitter data in the Arab region identified that the number of non–hate tweets greatly exceeded the number of hate tweets, where the percentage of hate tweets among COVID-19 related tweets was 3.2% (11,743/547,554). The analysis also revealed that the majority of hate tweets (8385/11,743, 71.4%) contained a low level of hate based on the score provided by the CNN. This study identified Saudi Arabia as the Arab country from which the most COVID-19 hate tweets originated during the pandemic. Furthermore, we showed that the largest number of hate tweets appeared during the time period of March 1-30, 2020, representing 51.9% of all hate tweets (6095/11,743). Contrary to what was anticipated, in the Arab region, it was found that the spread of COVID-19–related hate speech on Twitter was weakly related with the dissemination of the pandemic based on the Pearson correlation coefficient (r=0.1982, P=.50). The study also identified the commonly discussed topics in hate tweets during the pandemic. Analysis of the 7 extracted topics showed that 6 of the 7 identified topics were related to hate speech against China and Iran. Arab users also discussed topics related to political conflicts in the Arab region during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic poses serious public health challenges to nations worldwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, frequent use of social media can contribute to the spread of hate speech. Hate speech on the web can have a negative impact on society, and hate speech may have a direct correlation with real hate crimes, which increases the threat associated with being targeted by hate speech and abusive language. This study is the first to analyze hate speech in the context of Arabic COVID-19–related tweets in the Arab region.

Kellstedt, The Mass Media and the Dynamics of American Racial Attitudes. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003, 174 pages, ISBN 0-521-82171-1, $60.00.Carol M. Swain's book, The New White Nationalism in American: Its Challenge to Integration, is an ambitious and, in many ways, novel blend of traditional social science and social advocacy. At the outset, Swain informs the reader that this book breaks with “… the tradition of impersonal, value-free social science insofar as I do not pretend to be neutral and do not hesitate to interject many personal observations and comments into the body of the text.” She does not disappoint on this score. This nearly 500-page book combines original interviews and survey and focus group data, with Swain's reflections on a range of topics including reparations, affirmative action, racial hate crimes, and the redemptive power of religion. To Swain's credit, she also steps outside her role as a (nominally) dispassionate social scientist to offer a range of policy prescriptions near the end of her book to combat what she views as the potentially alarming growth of the White power movement. In many ways, Swain's passion for her subject is refreshing, and even commendable. Unfortunately, her passion is also the source of the principal weakness of this book: its inability to match its uncompromising rhetoric with persuasive, or even plausible, supportive evidence for readers who do not already agree with her arguments.

Koeller, P. A., L. Coates-Markle, and J. D. Neilson. "Feeding Ecology of Juvenile (Age-0) Silver Hake (Merluccius bilinearis) on the Scotian Shelf." Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences 46, no. 10 (October 1, 1989): 1762–68. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/f89-223.

Full text
Abstract:
Feeding patterns of juvenile silver hake (Merluccius bilinearis) (length range 19–90 mm) captured by midwater trawl were compared between seasons (fall and winter), years (1980 and 1981), fish lengths, and depth and time of capture. Prey selection shifted gradually with increasing fish length, from copepods at the smaller size ranges, to amphipods, euphausiids and silver hake at the larger sizes. An abrupt shift in the feeding pattern occurred as larvae metamorphosed into juveniles, but there were no similar "critical" changes during the juvenile phase itself. Cannibalism of juveniles by juveniles was pronounced and could be an important factor influencing year-class strength. Silver hake juveniles did not prey on the larvae or juveniles of other fish species, nor did they compete with them for available food, mainly because the juveniles of other species were rare during the period of greatest silver hake abundance in the pelagic zone. Evidence from abundance surveys and the feeding study suggests that increased size-at-date at the early juvenile stage, possibly due to more favourable growth and feeding conditions, resulted in increased survival. Differences in feeding patterns among fish in different size categories, and captured at different depths and times generally substantiate diet migration patterns inferred from previous vertical distribution experiments.

Abstract:
Let f(·, λ) : R→R be given so that f(0, λ) = 0 and f(x, λ) = (1 + λ)x + ax2 + bx3 + o(x3) as x → 0. We characterize those small values of ε > 0 and λ ∈ R for which there are periodic solutions of periods approximately 1/k with k ∈ N of the delay equations When a = 0, these periodic solutions approach square waves if b < 0 or pulses if b > 0 as ε → 0. These results are similar to those obtained by Chow et al. and Hale and Huang, where the case of f(x, λ) = −(1 + λ)x + ax2 + bx3 + o(x3) as x → 0 is considered. However, when a ≠ 0, all these periodic solutions approach pulses as ε → 0; an interesting phenomenon that cannot happen in the case considered by Chow et al. and Hale and Huang.

Abstract:
We counted the number of snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) fecal pellets on 50 quadrats of 0.155 m2 on each of six areas near Kluane Lake, Yukon Territory, once a year from 1977 to 1983. On four of these areas we livetrapped hares once a month and estimated population density from the Jolly–Seber model. Average hare density for the year was linearly related to fecal pellet counts (r = 0.94) over the range 0–10 hares/ha. Mean turd counts also are related to the variance of these counts by Taylor's power law with exponent 1.30, indicating a clumped pattern in turd deposition. Fecal pellet counts provide a quick and accurate method for snowshoe hare censuses on an extensive scale.

Abstract:
HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) UAVs are aircraft systems for surveillance and reconnaissance for over 25 hours. Most of UAVs consist of fuselage and high aspect ratio wing because of long-endurance flight mission. The structural weight of HALE UAV is one of the most critical design requirements. In addition, the structural stiffness for the high aspect ratio wing is another critical design requirement because the UAV has to keep the minimum clearance between wing tip and ground when the UAV is being towed. For above design requirements, the wing structure of the UAV has been designed by intermediate modulus Gr/Ep composite materials. The goal of this research is to present the optimized design concepts for the composite wing structure of the UAV. Although there are many design parameters for the composite structure of the aircraft, this research is focused on composite structure strength and buckling analysis for the plate type structures, such as cover panel skins and spar webs, which are loaded in in-plane shear and/or compression. This research presents that the wing structural weight can be reduced when the material allowables based on tape laminate are applied instead of unidirectional lamina allowables. For the buckling analysis, this report has a trade off study to find an optimized lay-up design and stacking sequence with 0°, ±45° and 90° plies. This research shows that the critical buckling load is a function of the number of ±45° plies and the position of the ±45° plies through the laminate thickness using a typical Gr/Ep composite tape material. The structural design of the UAV composite wing regarding buckling analysis is more effective when the laminates are stacked up with high percent of ±45° plies and the ±45° plies are located toward outside through the laminate.

Abstract:
A method is described to determine the age of hake by counting zones in sectioned otoliths. The technique was validated to age 1 years from the progression of modes in length–frequency distributions, and for ages 2 years onwards by examining the state of otolith margins from fish sampled regularly over a one-year period. von Bertalanffy growth parameters are estimated for hake on the Campbell Plateau and Stewart–Snares shelf, on the Chatham Rise, and off the west coast of the South Island. Hake grow rapidly for about five years, but growth is slight after about 12 years. Female fish have a significantly faster rate of growth than males. A value forM of 0·20–0·25 is proposed. Differences in growth rates and population age distributions imply that there are at least two stocks of hake in New Zealand waters, with fish off the west coast of the South Island being distinct from those on the Campbell Plateau and Chatham Rise.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT A heterologous radioimmunoassay system developed for the rabbit has been shown to measure prolactin in the hare. Concentrations of prolactin showed a significant (P<0·01) increase in the last 3 days of pregnancy (87·7±11·7 compared with 9·8 ± 1·4 (s.e.m.) μg/l; n= 10 and 9 respectively) in pregnant females isolated from males, as well as in pregnant females kept with males and mating prepartum. This rise of prolactin at the end of pregnancy was not due to mating stimuli and occurred at a time when progesterone levels were still high (159 nmol/l). The injection of a slow-release preparation of bromocriptine (5 mg s.c.), which reduces prolactin secretion at the end of pregnancy, did not impair parturition. During lactation, prolactin levels increased significantly (61·2±19·8 compared with 5·3 ± 0·1 μg/l; P<0·01) only after suckling stimuli. Journal of Endocrinology (1990) 124, 11–17
