Abstract:
In this artistic contribution, New York-based German artist Heide Hatry offers pictures of her sculpture series Imagine It Thick In Your Own Hair. According to Hatry, the project was intended to make people aware of the tragedy and motivate them to help clean up the disaster BP created in 2010 with the Deepwater Horizon spill. Hatry is best known for her body-related performances and her work employing animal flesh and organs, and cremated remains. Among her fundamental preoccupations are identity, death, the nature of aesthetic experience and the meaning of beauty, the effects of knowledge upon perception, the human exploitation of the natural world, and the social oblivion that permits atrocity to persist in our midst.

Textured surfaces are known to play an important role in water-repellency and uptake for a number of creatures. While the influence of chemistry and surface roughness on the wettability of surfaces has been studied extensively, little is known about the role of larger-scale objects such as hairs. This thesis is directed towards rationalizing the benefits gained from hairy textures through a combined experimental and theoretical approach. First, we are motivated by semi-aquatic mammals, who rely on fur for insulation underwater. This thesis investigates the mechanism of dynamic air entrainment for hairy surfaces plunged in liquid. Hairy surfaces that are fabricated by casting PDMS elastomer in laser cut molds are plunged into a fluid bath. Modeling the hairy texture as a network of capillary tubes, the imbibition speed of liquid into the hairs is obtained through a balance of hydrostatic pressure and viscous stress. In this scenario, the bending of the hairs, capillary forces, and inertial effects are negligible. The maximum diving depth that can be achieved before the hairs are wetted to the roots is predicted from a comparison of the diving speed and imbibition speed. Second, motivated by nectar-drinking animals with hairy tongues, we investigate the reverse scenario, where a hairy surface is withdrawn from a bath of fluid, emerging with viscous liquid entrained in the hairy texture. The drainage of the liquid trapped between the texture is modeled using a Darcy-Brinkmann like approach. The amount of fluid that is entrained depends on the viscosity of the fluid, the density of the hairs, and the withdrawal speed. Both theory and experiments show that there is an optimal hair density to maximize fluid uptake. Finally, we investigate drop impact on hairy surfaces. By varying the speed of the drop, the spacing of the hairs, and the viscosity of the liquid, we observe a variety of behaviors. In some cases, the liquid drop can remain on top of the hair after impact, similar to a Cassie-Baxter state. If the drop penetrates the hairy surface, the hairs can resist its spreading. Using this scenario as a reference case, we rationalize the role of the hairs in mitigating the inertia of the impacting drop through a balance of inertial, viscous, and surface tension effects.

Baqqain, Hanna Suleiman Issa. "The architecture of Hatra." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 1988. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.540548.

Full text
Abstract:
This study provides a full description of the architecture of Hatra. It investigates some problems relevant to the design and function of buildings. The thesis is composed of two volumes, the first contains the text, the second holds the illustrations. The text is divided into five parts. Part one concerns the location of Hatra, early activities in the region, choice of site, factors for the rise and prosperity of the city, explorations and excavations, and the history of Hatra. Part two investigates three topics: the plan of the city, fortifications, and the rectangular enclosure and the porticoes on it. The third part deals with the buildings in the city. It comprises, five topics: the great temples, the small shrines, the Bouleuterion of Hatra, dwellings and tombs. Part four discusses materials and methods of construction. It is divided into two major sections; the first discusses materials used in the construction of the buildings of the city, while the second studies the methods that the Hatrans architects followed in the construction-of the walls, doors, windows, roofs, floors, altars and columns of their buildings. Part five by way of conclusion discusses the general trends and characteristics of the architecture of Hatra, and the most essential factors which had determined them. Thus it is hoped that this thesis achieves a comprehensive account of the architecture of Hatra, a topic that has not been adequately investigated before.

Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för språk, litteratur och interkultur (from 2013), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-78047.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine how the Harry Potter books may be used to support teaching about source criticism and critical thinking in terms of the teaching of Swedish. This is done through four textual examples, two from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and two from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, being analysed in relation to the Lgr11 and Gy11 curricula and source-critical principles as well as fantasy-specific theories. The essay concludes with a discussion about the advantages the novels have in a classroom context and in connection to teaching about source criticism and critical thinking. The conclusion is that the novels, at least in theory, work well in this context.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This paper contrasts J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series in the English original with its Swedish translation, by Lena Fries-Gedin. After an initial presentation of related research, some concepts such as implied narrator, implied reader, as well as intertextuality in translation and dual audience in children’s literature are explained. These concepts are applied to the two bodies of text to examine if they are identical in both the English and the Swedish versions. Some translational strategies are presented, and looking at examples from the texts it is discerned which strategies are being used. The Swedish translation’s use of formal ‘you’ to reflect the quality of inter-character relationships is discussed and examined, and the portrayal of sociolects in the original and translation are compared, concluding that the dialects are transformed into average spoken Swedish, and that adolescent speech is only partially transposed from the English original. There is also a comparison of differences in register, where the mentioned examples show that there is a loss of fluidity in style, and that the tone of the Swedish text is more dated than the English text. Some comparisons to other translations of Harry Potter are made, citing examples from other research, to view the Swedish translation in an international context. A brief comparison of the graphic design differences of layout is discussed, concluding that the Swedish design is likely more appealing to children.
