Abstract:
Preconceptions about the construction and function of burial mounds can heavily influence the degree of complexity one is apt to see in the field. Rather than seeing a burial mound as the result of a single moment in time, a single burial in prehistory, the mound should be considered as an entire grave field in use over a long period. The excavation of a burial mound at Hålandsmarka, in Time municipality, southwestern Norway, revealed that the monumental structure actually consisted of many different structures and was developed over the course of 2,000 years. By setting aside the standard model of a single burial centrally placed in a homogenous mound, and focusing on the processes of construction and activities that may have left recoverable traces in and around the mound, the excavation allowed for the development of new insights into the longterm use of the site before, during, and after the burials. It is argued that the situation at Hålandsmarka is not unique, and that the ability to accurately document such complexities in grave mounds is heavily dependent upon excavation strategy. It is further argued that the responsibility to document these processes must be taken into consideration in the planning of future excavations.

Abstract:
In this short paper, the author takes a closer look at Einar Haugen's (1906–1994) writings in as far as they touch upon the historiography of linguistics. After a sketch of his scholarly background and the role he played in the Linguistic Society of America generally and, more particularly, as a historian of linguistic thought from his well-known LSA presidential address of 1950 onwards, Haugen's treatment of the so-called First grammatical treatise comes under closer scrutiny. In particular, the author discusses two expressions in Haugen's 1950 edition of the text that seem to have given rise to much speculation, namely, the word grein and the (probably juridical) phrase skipta máli. It is argued that Haugen and others—notably Hreinn Benediktsson—are at best overinterpreting them by assigning modern structural phonologist meanings to the words, turning them into metalinguistic terms. It is maintained instead that the First Grammarian had made a practical argument in favor of the addition of four vowels not found in the five-vowel Roman alphabet necessitated by the facts of Old Icelandic, and that the text was basically a pedagogical treatise on orthographic requirements and not a precocious phonological discussion.

Representations of romantic love in Norwegian and Swedish texts for children are considered focusing on the humorous, ironic and parodic strategies used by the Norwegian author Tormod Haugen in a trilogy of novels, which traces the intersubjective relations of the protagonists, Georg and Gloria. Haugen's trilogy incorporates a sequence of three stages, the heroic project, the pastoral idyll, and the love tragedy, which is informed both by conventions and genre expectations in regard to love stories.

Abstract:
language ecology was proposed by Einar Haugen in 1972 as the study of the interaction of any given language and its environment. Despite some use of the term in the literature, sociolinguistics have failed to develop the potenstial that Haugen saw in an ecological approach. Recent developments in ecological thought, however; when applied to language, raise questions about many basic assumptions of conventional linguistics. For example, from an ecological perspective, language is not a rule-governed system, but a form of patterned behaviour arising from the needs of human socialtity: communication, culture, and community. As Haugen foresaw, language ecology offers an exciting alternative approach to linguistic theory.Key words: language ecology, patterned behaviour, holistic, dynamic, and interactive

Abstract:
This work provides the community with a study of the ecological paradigm in linguistics. As recent years have seen a significant increase in publications based on ecolinguistics, a selection of well-known contributions as well as lesser-known ones was compiled, in order to present a state of the art of this new field of research. A detailed examination of the main concepts of ecolinguistics enabled us to study the various orientations within this paradigm in the context of current neo-darwinian approaches of the evolution of language. The history of the discipline was traced back to the so-called seminal article by Haugen, whose analysis shows the empirical and theoretical contradictions which threaten the new paradigm. The work suggests that the ecological approach lays a foundation for a true rethinking of sociolinguistic and ethno/anthropological linguistics theories, and also highlights the importance of a thorough examination of biological background information

Stibbe, A. H. "Hans Nielsen Hauge and the prophetic imagination." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/15430/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Norwegian lay preacher Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824) has been described as a prophet who brought religious, social, economic and political change to nineteenth-century Norway. This thesis examines Hauge’s first four texts as prophecy using the paradigm ‘prophetic imagination’ as an analytical model to provide a comprehensive explanation as to how his speech acted to ‘evoke consciousness and perception alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture’ by means of the cooperative action of ‘prophetic criticism’ and ‘prophetic energising’ (Brueggemann 2001:13). A formal analysis of Hauge’s texts identified idiosyncratic ‘framing devices’ which act to indicate the presence of prophetic speech at both the general and the specific level. These devices, particularly the prophetic call narratives, were also found to act to legitimate Hauge’s prophetic speech. Formal elements of prophetic speech were identified in Hauge’s specific prophetic utterances, enabling these to be classified as forms of two major prophetic genres: announcements of judgement (criticising) or announcements of salvation (energising). Apocalyptic, the third major prophetic genre, was identified as playing a greater role in Hauge’s early texts than has been previously acknowledged. An analysis of Hauge’s apocalyptic thought indicated that his prophetic task was motivated by basic beliefs rooted in this idiosyncratic worldview. The supplementation of Brueggemann’s paradigm with Wright’s worldview schema permitted the scrutiny of Hauge’s use of prophetic narrative against this apocalyptic backdrop (Wright 2001). This subsequently permitted the identification of the symbols which were dismantled by Hauge’s prophetic criticism - the personnel, practice and place of institutional religion, and the symbols which were transformed or generated by his prophetic energising - ‘true shepherds’, ‘priests and kings’, and membership of ‘a prophethood of all believers’. The adoption of these symbols explains the self-confidence expressed by Hauge’s followers and their subsequent involvement in all areas of public life.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Multi-phase flows containing liquid droplets widely exist in piping system of process plants. Sudden geometry change like elbow causes the flow turbulence, which leads to droplet impingement against the piping wall. As a result, erosion can be induced, and hence, may cause leak of piping. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate erosion rate for determining design margin and finding countermeasures for erosion-related trouble. Some models have been proposed for predicting droplet-induced erosion rate, but there is large difference in their prediction accuracy. The present study aims at verifying prediction accuracy of some major erosion models for engineering applications. CFD simulations of water jets are conducted to verify the prediction accuracy of erosion induced by liquid droplets, using the published experimental data. In the present simulations, a two-way approach is applied for solving the air-water two-phase flow. An original algorithm is used to calculate the droplet-induced erosion rate using the obtained two-phase flow fields. The investigated erosion models include the models of Haugen, DNV and Isomoto. CFD results show that almost all the investigated erosion models for various simulation conditions provide the conservative evaluation of erosion rates, compared with the experimental results. Among them, the erosion rates predicted by Haugen model are closest to the experimental results with acceptable prediction accuracy for engineering applications.

Abstract:
Electrical submersible pump (ESP) is one of the most widely used artificial lift methods in the petroleum industry. It is crucial to study the wear in ESP stages with sand production, which can severely reduce pump performance and life span. Usually, experiments and simulation studies were conducted for simple flow geometry such as direct impingement and pipe elbow. Various erosion equations and models were developed for different material and affecting factors. However, the predictions of these erosion models for complex flow geometry need to be evaluated in order to make a proper selection. This study will compare the wear patterns and erosion rates of six different erosion models in three ESPs by using commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS Fluent. The results will offer engineers a brief guidance of erosion model selection for complicated flow domain. In this paper, stages of three ESPs, DN1750, TE2700 and Flex31, are modeled. For each pump, the flow domain of two stages are selected and high-quality structured meshes, comprising around 1.2 to 1.8 million hexahedral grids per stage, are generated by ICEM or Turbogrid. Six erosion models, Ahlert (1994), Haugen (1995), Zhang (2007), Oka (2007), Mansouri (2014) and DNV (2015), are simulated under pump best efficiency point. Among six selected erosion models, Ahlert (1994) gives a much higher wear rate than others, while DNV predicts lowest, Besides, the impact angle functions show that all models, except Haugen (1995), assume steel to be a ductile material. Furthermore, the erosion pattern, location, and distribution of all three pumps are different, which indicates different solid particle handling capabilities and failure reasons of radial type and mixed type ESPs.

Abstract The particles (including solid particles and liquid droplets) existing in multi-phase flow in process plants can cause erosion due to flow turbulence, and thus, result in pipe wall thinning. Hence, it is important to evaluate erosion rate for determining design margin and finding counter-measures. Many models have been proposed for predicting particles induced erosion rate, but there is significant disparity in their prediction accuracy. The present study aims to verify prediction accuracy of some major erosion models utilizing the published experimental data, for applications to engineering. CFD benchmark study was conducted for three different piping geometries to investigate prediction accuracy of solid particle induced erosion rates for five major erosion models. CFD results show that the erosion rates predicted by Grant &amp; Tabakoff model are closest to the experimental results with acceptable prediction accuracy for applications to engineering. Also, CFD benchmark study was also performed to verify the prediction accuracy of droplet induced erosion rates for three erosion models, utilizing the published experimental data. CFD results show that the erosion rates predicted by Haugen model for all the water impingement velocities are closest to the experimental results with acceptable prediction accuracy for applications to engineering.
