Abstract:
The following text concerns itself with the comprehensive research and design of costumes for The Beggar's Opera by Václav Havel. The author of this thesis presents her historical and theoretical research, the development of her creative concept and final designs. The play was written in the 1970s, when Havel was reacting critically to the current situation in his home country. To make this social criticism up to date, the author imagined doing a production of this play at a cafe in a small town, and sourcing inspiration for the designs of the individual character types from observing modern small town mentality. The text is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part concerns itself with the history of the play, studies past productions, and examines Havel's approach to theatre. In the practical part we can follow the development of the design concept, including analyses of the individual characters and the sources of inspiration used. Descriptions of the final designs are supported by images.

Abstract:

During Weichselian glaciation initially a continuous ice sheet existed in this region. In the process of general deglaciation, it disintegrated into to local glacial streams, glacial lobes and glacial tongues, in particular during intermittent ice-advances. As a result, narrow ridges, curved. half-moon-shaped or angular in outline, border the basins left by glacial tongues. The morphological elements oberved are attributed respectively to 6 or 7 ice margins. How certain is the position of the maximal Weichselian ice advance, of the Brandenburg stage, in this area? Some evidence (relief, sand, gravel, stones, loam) suggests another ice-margin in the Elbe-Havel-pradolina in front of the main Brandenburg ice margin.

The major morphological features are described by position, relief, sediments and rocks, depositional fabrics and deformation structures. Periglacial dry vallieys yield further evidence with respect to kind and depositional fabrics. Comprehensive and well founded knowledge of glacial deposits and structures is important for solving problems concerning mineral deposits, hydrogeology and ecology.

Typical glaciogenic landforms investigated include terminal moraines, ice-push-ridges (mainly ridges of glaciofluial material), overriden terminal moraines, composit terminal moraines (pushed basis overlain by non-deformed sediments), sandurs, basal moraines with compressed sedimments overlain by thin Weichselian till), basins of glacial tongues, drumlins, subglacial channels, kames, kame fields and fluvial lowlands with former channels of the river Elber.

A point of discussion is the glacial and Holocene history of the Lower Havel river and the river Elbe between the towns of Burg and Havelberg.
Finally, a map showing Weichselian ice-margins between the rivers Elbe and Nuthe is presented.

Abstract:
In the following work, I intend to illuminate the importance of the lives and the works of Václav Havel and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. I have chosen to employ a multi-disciplinary approach - one that will include elements of political philosophy, educational theory, cultural theory, and literary criticism. I will analyze and compare their works, the convergence and divergence of their views, their shared emphasis on the theme of the 'ideological lie', and the lack of an alternative view in Post-Communist societies. I will demonstrate that their philosophical framework is not fundamentally or properly understood by the archaic dialectic between capitalism and communism that has shaped academic discourse for the last two centuries. For that reason, their works and central themes are still relevant; indeed the conceptual framework they have constructed can help illuminate the continued struggles faced by 21st century global society.

Abstract:
This work wants to show the relation between Plato, Jan Patocka and Vaclav Havel through Patocka's notion of care of the soul (pece o dusi) and through the Platonism related to it. We will focus on the way this care is expressed through dramatic form in Plato's works and in Havel's Vanek Plays (1975-78). We will analyse the genealogy of Patocka's project of negative Platonism in his 1947-49 university courses on Socrates and Plato, and we will put it together with phenomenological and dramatic elements in Patocka's own thinking. This will take us to enrich the notion of. dramatic phenomenology (Stanley Rosen) and to find a drama for the care of the soul that will become elements of a European historical meditation.

Abstract:
This dissertation tries to prove that the so-called philosopher on the throne can be a better ruler not only than dictators but also than contemporary liberal democratic politician. Since the sixth century BC, when the human undertook a systematic and critical contemplation upon surrounding reality, she/he has begun to dream about political rulers to be guided in their doings by the imperative of reason. In principal, the higher level of spiritual culture characterized the rulers, the more likely their subjects were to live to a great age in relative peace. That is why for centuries it has been dreamed of a political system that is something like a kind of a sophocracy. The most complete picture of such a sovereign, which fulfilled dreams about a sage in the crown, was outlined by Plato in his State. In his point of view, as long as the lovers of wisdom will not have royal power in the states, or the rulers will not begin to love wisdom honestly, there is no help for states and for the human race. Nevertheless, over the centuries, authority was enforced mainly by physical strenght and not by reason. It was not until the twentieth century that democracy brought freedom and equality of rights, thanks to which political power became more rational. Unfortunately, also contemporary liberal democracy is not free from fundamental contradictions that can bring about its collapse. The main contradiction is the increasingly smaller influence of citizens – who in the theory of democracy are the only legal sovereign – on political decision-making. This is accompanied by the enhancing influence of entities with no democratic legitimacy, e.g. global corporations that do not care about the common (public) good, but only about their own. These entities use the growing intellectual and ethical weakness of democratic politicians whose purpose is their own particular interest and not the happiness (good) of their citizens. This may indicate a slow system disintegration. For this reason liberal democracy needs politicians who are wise enough to realize this threat. Of all the people in the history of the world who led political communities, to the Platonic ideal in the highest degree (among others, like T. G. Masaryk and Á. Göncz) got closer the man who, paradoxically, never wanted to be a ruler. Václav Havel's thought is a critique of both Soviet post-totalitarianism and Western democracy. In his opinion both systems, though to a different degree, alienate a human trying to reduce her/him to the role of a machine's cog. Havel proposes that each citizen take individual and global responsibility for herself/himself and the whole world, because only in this way she/he can consciously exert real influence over political decisions. What is more, this is the only way to build a politics that aims – if possible – the happiness of every person. Havel realizes that in today's world this attitude is extremely impractical and very difficult to apply in everyday life. Nevertheless, he knows no better possibility.

This study begins with the acknowledgment that Václav Havel was a man of theatre before being elected as the Czechoslovakian Republic’s president. By studying and encountering the author and his writings, it strives to understand the various possible inter-dependencies or separations between the field of theatre and the field of politics. In order to immerse ourselves in this research, our first analysis concerns angling out historical context of a repetitive political and cultural process. We have observed the impact of both culture and theatre within the history of the new Czechoslovakian Republic. We have then considered the various repercussions that these same inseparable links defining the Czech nation may have had on the biographical journey of Václav Havel. His drama writings, essays and speeches have allowed us to assess the different links and networks maintained between the realm of politics and the realm of theatre, and to measure the limitations related to this proximity

"Living in Truth in the Age of Automatization" is a discussion of dehumanization in the period of technological and bureaucratic supremacy. The article uses the writings of former Czech president Václav Havel and American novelist Kurt Vonnegut to argue that neither the automatization inherent within the Eastern Communist Model nor the mass consumer culture of the Western Capitalist Model are ideal, and to discuss the possibility of a third way, a way called "living in truth" which protects human dignity and the right of every man to pursue meaningful work in a society

Abstract:

Abstract:
This project explores how cosmopolitan personas rhetorically negotiate the space between local and global, discursively tying people to the national as well as to the global or transnational. It examines the possible co-existence of cosmopolitanism and nationalism while identifying how each is articulated in response to the other. As global networks become increasingly complex, rethinking borders and how they are articulated is essential. Can a quintessential cosmopolitan also be a public nationalist? Are cosmopolitan discourses compromised by their presumed lack of attachment to the local? To what extent and with what success are cosmopolitanism and nationalism siultaneously articulated? In order to study these and other questions, I analyze the public personas crafted by cosmopolitan figures Vaclav Havel, Jimmy Carter, and Edward Said. By illuminating how they negotiate that ambiguous space between locale and its absence, a project attentive to the rhetorical possibilities of discursive connection in a world increasingly devoid of shared loyalties and histories enables a fuller understanding of the possibilites of intercultural contact in a globalizing world.

Abstract:
Taking its depature point in a translation of a play by a Czech playwright and philosopher, Václav Havel, into Swahili, the article strives at a cross-cultural comparison of a pivotal concept of Havel`s thought, lidství (`humanity´), and an equally central concept of Swahili moral and philosophical thought, utu. The basis of this copmparison is, on the Czech side, an explanation of Havel`s concept and its grounding in existentialist philosophy. The Swahili side is presented in a two-step procedure. First, the semantic field of `humanity´in the Swahili language, comprising utu and several concepts related to it (especially ubinadamu), is analyzed. Second, the concepts belonging to the semantic field of utu are traced in the development of Swahili literature, as a prominent representative of intellecual discourses in the Swahili culture.

Abstract:
For a sustainable management of lowland river basins, a comprehensive knowledge about floodplain water balance and nutrient transport processes is required. This investigation aims to analyse water balance processes and nutrient dynamics and transport within the groundwater influenced floodplains of lowland areas. Thus, the investigation was focused on the Havel river catchment at the Northeast German Lowlands, which is a typical example of a lowland floodplain. Experimental investigations were performed at different spatial scales for qualitative analysis of water balance. The complex model IWAN was developed which enables the simulation and quantitative analysis of water balance and nutrient dynamics. Furthermore it allows the scenario based simulation and analysis of changing landuse management and boundary conditions.

Abstract:
Plural World Interpretations are part of our everyday lives, even if we are not aware of the fact. They result from the simultaneous existence of different but equal models for interpreting the world we live in. These models are the product of human constructivity and co-exist as parallel realities, complementing and contradicting each other. Based on fieldwork among the Tyva of southern Siberia, the book discusses the practice of dealing with this multiplicity of world interpretations and shows how individual actors oscillate flexibly between two of many possible models for interpreting specific situations and act on them. The rules Tyvans apply in varying contexts, the reasons behind their choices and the consequences they have to deal with, are analysed. The result is an account of contemporary culture that explores the flexibility and plurality of human interpretation, action and behaviour.

Dissertation thesis Air Cargo HUBs and Corridors deals with air cargo transport and HUB and Spoke technology and it is focused on Václav Havel Airport Prague. The purpose of this disseration thesis is to present air cargo transport with all its specifics, to explain application of HUB and Spoke technology in air cargo transport and location of the most important air cargo HUBs. This thesis searches for an answer to a question whether Václav Havel Airport Prague can be considered an air cargo HUB. To meet the target methods of research, analysis, description and comparasion were used. On the basis of assessment of current situation, nowadyas it is not possible to consider Václav Havel Airport Prague an air cargo HUB. An entrance of a new air cargo carrier, a reinforcement of current connections and the construction of parallel runway indicate an increase in transported air cargo, depending on positive economic development.

Hoppen, Franziska. "Putting politics in its place : philosophies and practices of presence in the works of Gustav Landauer, Eric Voegelin, Simone Weil and Václav Havel." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/66778/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an alternative perspective to the "discourse of crisis" that currently pervades political debate. "Post-truth politics", "post-politics" and "anti-politics" - these are only a few of the new concepts that have recently emerged to describe what is perceived as a deviation from politics proper. At the core of this crisis appears to be the phenomenon of externalisation, where self-realisation is outsourced to external markers of identification, such as race or nation. Traditional political concepts no longer seem sufficient to grasp such externalisation - hence the discourse calls for new, original ways of thinking and doing politics. This thesis discusses the limits of the discourse of crisis and introduces the philosophy of presence, traditionally excluded from the canon of modern political thought. It is concerned with the question of politics only as a derivative. Unlike contemporary mainstream and critical political thought, this philosophy argues that externalisation is not a deviation from politics, but its very essence. Its core argument is that another order, prior to and beyond the political, is already present in the world and can be experienced by human faculties, so that, instead of ordering the world politically, the task is to "become present" to the world spiritually. Hence, the philosophy of presence puts politics in its place - secondary to experience. I present this philosophy by exploring four thinkers in depth and by focusing on what I refer to as "practices of presence": means by which presence can be cultivated and made habitual. Thereby, I seek to show that the philosophy of presence does not promote withdrawal but may lead to another type of community and sociality - one that is not political. The thinkers discussed will be Gustav Landauer and his practice of Absonderung, Eric Voegelin and his practice of Anamnesis, Simone Weil and her practice of Malheur and Václav Havel and his practice of Neklid.

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040133.

Full text
Abstract:
Berlin and London are crossed by rivers. The River Thames flows after 346 km in the North Sea. Berlin is crossed by the Spree and the Havel. The Spree has a length of 400 km and the Havel of 325 km; these two rivers are connected by the Elbe to the North Sea. The population was sedentary on the river banks due to the presence of drinking water. From the Middle – Ages, the situation has changed. The people used the river to eliminate wastewater from the city and transport goods by the waterway. In the past, the industries have bordered these rivers. Today, they no longer occupy these functions and the industrial wastelands can be redeveloped. These urban rivers can either create a city break or an opportunity in terms of planning. Each metropolis has its own conceptions. Many urban projects on industrial wastelands have already been realized such as the London Docklands and the Museumsinsel project in Berlin. On the one hand, the functional mix with the creation of housing, trade, services and green areas is predominant in the project of the Docklands in London. On the other hand, the Museumsinsel project is directed towards the culture. The problem of gentrification appears with these projects. Many inhabitants who live in these districts can no longer pay the increasing rents and must leave their homes in the metropolis. Will the riverbanks be only intended for the upper class people or at any public ? Therefore, the projects can create a territorial rupture. But, urban projects can also be an opportunity, when they fit into the existing urban morphology

Abstract:
This descriptive, non-experimental study examines the strength of the relationship between California school library media programs and student achievement, using data from California criterion-referenced state-wide tests, publically available school and community demographic data, and a state survey of school library programs. Results indicate a substantial discrepancy in library staffing levels from the elementary grades through the high schools. Nevertheless, statistically significant correlations were found between certificated staffing levels and student achievement at each grade. Significant correlations persisted at the elementary and middle school when controlling for five of six school and community variables, and at the high school when controlling for all six of those variables. Bivariate correlations between total staffing and student achievement were significant at both the middle school and high school level when controlling for all school and community variables. Generally, the strength of the correlations between both certificated and total staffing tended to increase with grade level; at the high school level, correlations were among the strongest reported in any statewide study to date. There was a significant positive relationship between a majority of the 21 library services regularly provided and student achievement at all levels. Total library services were significantly related to student achievement at all levels when controlling for all school and community variables. In multiple regression analyses, there was an increasingly stronger relationship between total library programs and student achievement by grade level when controlling for all school and community variables. At every level, certificated and total staffing levels were associated with the strength of library program elements. The findings from this study confirm a host of prior research on the relationship between school libraries and student achievement and point to inequitable access to school library services in California. Results from this study might also provide a baseline of data for qualitative research that more deeply explores ways school library programs contribute to student achievement beyond ways measured by current standardized tests.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the ecology of three endangered European river corridor angiosperms Cnidium dubium (Schkuhr) Thell., Gratiola officinalis L. und Juncus atratus Krocker. The study is based on different experimental approaches and field surveys in a wetland along the Lower Havel River, a designated German Ramsar-site (Wetland of International Importance). This involves the examination of aspects of seed bank dynamics, germination, nitrogen limitation, competitive ability, and the response of plants to summer drought and/or winter/spring flooding. The thesis continues with a detailed study of the population biology of the species at natural sites and the response of these plants to specific disturbances like mowing, herbivory and the severe summer flooding in 2002. The reader learns about the traits of the three plant species to tolerate the typical conditions their natural sites are exposed to in different phases of their life cycle. He gets a comprehensive look at physiological means by which plants can adapt to the prevailing conditions of European river lowlands. The interpretation of the results is used to reveal specific plant traits, which may contribute to the endangerment of the three river corridor plants. As such, this thesis is interesting for protection of species, biotopes and landscapes. Furthermore, it provides numerous close connections to fundamental research from an ecophysiological perspective. The increased use of physiological methods is recommended in order to be able to adequately resolve ecological problems.

Abstract:
Public diplomacy has become an integral part of international relations in the recent years. Effective communication is the key in solving international conflicts and in strengthening the partnership between nations. Building an excellent reputation of the individual country among the foreign community has no less importance. This master thesis deals with the promotion of Czech culture as an important part of public diplomacy in the US, particularly in New York, partly in Washington, DC. First and second chapter provide a theoretical framework for the following issues. Basic concept of public diplomacy is clarified there. The third chapter then presents specific players and partners whose cooperation the author deals in the fourth and fifth chapter. The fourth chapter discusses in detail the Film Festival Panorama Europe, Europe's largest film festival in New York and tries to map its promotion. This event is significant in that it is an original project of the Czech Centre New York. The Film Festival currently has a lot of partners and is held under the auspices of EUNIC. The fifth chapter presents a unique project, which has been involved in over twenty-five different players. Main theme was the freedom celebration, celebration of the 25th anniversary of Velvet Revolution. The main objective of this thesis is to analyze how players contribute in building the reputation of the Czech Republic in the USA and how they promote their activities. Everything is based on case studies.

Full text
Abstract:
The Czechoslovakian dissident thought has been broadly built, in the communist period, on an idea of Europe whose critical outreach has not faded with the totalitarian regime. Even among the ones who had struggled against the communist regime on behalf on the Czechoslovakian europanism, some are become avowed opponents of the European Union, and even the most favourable towards the construction do not spare their critics. How such a process could happen ? In order to understand it, it is necessary to question the very notion of “return to Europe”. Around the philosopher Jan Patočka in particular a thought of “return to Europe” has been worked out, which considers “care of the soul” as the founding principle of the European culture, whether it declines in the scientific, moral or political form. This working out of the European heritage allows to rethink the political modernity in the mirror of what it should have been if it had not been artificially separated from its ground. This Europeanism criticizing the modernity draws itself to ways of thinking we have tried to identify”. The Prague Spring’s “revisionnism” first, thought of a socialism with a human face and which would be embodied in the specifity of a national experience. The husserlian thought of European crisis secondly, which disposes the grounds of a phenomenological critic of modernity whose main topics will be taken by Patočka and Havel. At last the Masarykian vision of democracy and humanism, ingrained in a democratic messianism which can explain some ex-dissidents atlantism today

Abstract:

Partridge, Helen L. "Establishing the human perspective of the information society." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2007. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/16572/1/Helen_Partridge_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The digital divide is a core issue of the information society. It refers to the division between those who have access to, or are comfortable using, information and communication technology (ICT) (the "haves") and those who do not have access to, or are not comfortable using ICT (the "have-nots"). The digital divide is a complex phenomenon. The majority of studies to date have examined the digital divide from a socio-economic perspective. These studies have identified income, education and employment as the key factors in determining the division between the "haves" and the "have-nots". Very little research has explore the psychological, social or cultural factors that contribute to digital inequality in community. The current study filled this gap by using Bandura's social cognitive theory (SCT) to examine the psychological barriers that prevent individuals from integrating ICT into their everyday lives. SCT postulates that a person will act according to their perceived capabilities and the anticipated consequences of their actions. Four studies have explored the digital divide using SCT. Because of limitations in the research design these studies have shed only limited light onto current understanding of digital inequality in community. The current research was the first study exploring the digital divide that (i) incorporated both socio-economic and socio-cognitive factors, (ii) used a community context that ensured the recruitment of participants who represented the full spectrum of the general population, and (iii) was conducted in both the US and Australia. Data was gathered via self administered questionnaires in two communities: Brisbane, Australia and San Jose, USA. Completed questionnaires were obtained from 330 and 398 participants from the US and Australia, respectively. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to explore the research question: what influence do socio-cognitive factors have in predicting internet use by members of the general population when the effects of socio-economic factors are controlled? The results of this analysis revealed that attitudes do matter. The US study found that socio-economic factors were not statistically significant predictors of internet use. The only factor that found to be a significant predictor of use was internet self efficacy. In short individuals with higher levels of internet self efficacy reported higher levels of internet use. Unlike the US study, the Australian study found that by themselves several socio-economic factors predicted internet use. In order of importance these were age, gender, income and ethnicity. However, the study also revealed that when socio-economic factors are controlled for, and socio-cognitive variables included into the analysis, it is the socio-cognitive and not the socioeconomic variables that are the dominant (in fact the only!) predictors of internet use. The research illustrated that the digital divide involves more than just the availability of resources and funds to access those resources. It incorporates the internal forces of an individual that motivates to them to use or integrate ICT into their lives. The digital divide is not just about ICT such as computers and the internet. It is about people. As such, the key to solving the issue of digital inequality is not going to be found with corporate or government funds providing physical access to technology. Instead, the key to solving digital inequality is inside the individual person. The alternative view of the digital divide presented in this research is by no means intended to minimise the role played by socio-economic factors. Indeed, the socioeconomic perspective has helped shed light on a very real social issue. What this research has done is suggest that the digital divide is more complex and more involved than has been imagined, and that further and different research is required if genuine insights and real steps are going to be made in establishing an information society for all.

Abstract:
In this research, we trace the sociolinguistic profile of the speakers from the state of Alagoas concerning the variation of the verbs "ter" and "haver" in existential constructions, in order to analyse how that variation occurs and verify if the alternance of those verbs, in the alagoana speech, reflects either a process of stable variation or a change in progress. For the development of this work, we appeal to the Theory of Linguistics Variation (LABOV, 2008[1972]) which deals the variation and linguistics change and includes the variable use of the language in its social context. In this way, after the delimitation of the dependent variable and of the independent variables selected as potentially relevant in the variation under analysis, namely, animacity of the internal argument, nature of the internal argument, verbal tense, gender, age and scholarity, we stratify our sample and we did the gathering and transcription of data, as well as, the analysis and codification of all existential constructions formed with the verbs present in the corpus. For the quantitative analysis, we use the software VARBRUL, which delimited the variables statically nonsignificant and the variables statically significant in variation under study, showing not only that there is variation “ter” and “haver” existentials in the community studied and that the uses of “ter” existential is greater than the uses of “haver” existential, as well as that such variation is conditionated by the factor groups scholarity, verbal tense, age and nature of internal argument, leading us to argue that, in the alagoana speech, such variation reflects a process of change in cours in the direction of “ter” existential.
