During Park Chung Hee’s first term as president (1963-1967), regime ideologues incorporated selected elements of the wholesome modernization and student vanguard schemas into his gendered program to “Modernize of the Fatherland.” This program subordinated the position of women to that of men in the collective enterprise of rapid but uneven economic development. It also replaced the unreliable student vanguard with the notion of the militarized vanguard, which was to serve as the primary force for the interlinked projects of national defense and industrialization. On the other hand, progressive activists drew on unofficial memories of April 19<sup>th</sup> and the vanguard schema in staging antiregime protests in 1964-1965. In doing so, they consolidated the culture of noninstitutional youth protest that drove South Korea’s democracy movement (1964-1987).

&lt;em&gt;Abstract.&lt;/em&gt;—The hatchery program in Alaska was initiated in the 1970s to rehabilitate depleted salmon fisheries. It was predicated on protecting wild salmon stocks through development of rigorous permitting processes that include genetics, pathology, and management reviews, policies that require hatcheries to be located away from significant wild stocks, use of local brood sources, laws that give priority to wild stocks in fisheries, requirements for marking hatchery fish, and requirements for special studies on hatchery/wild stock interactions. The program is comprised of state, federal and private nonprofit (PNP) hatcheries. Currently, 16 of 26 operating hatcheries are run by PNP aquaculture associations. In 2002, hatcheries accounted for 23% of the salmon harvested commercially. Hatcheries produce approximately 1.5 billion juvenile fish annually, the majority of which are pink salmon &lt;em&gt;Oncorhynchus gorbuscha &lt;/em&gt;and chum salmon &lt;em&gt;O. keta&lt;/em&gt;. Whether hatchery production adversely impacts wild stocks is debated in Alaska. Interactions between hatchery-produced and relatively smaller populations of wild salmon are unavoidable. However, obvious, adverse impacts from hatcheries on wild salmon are not evident. The success of the Alaska hatchery program can be attributed to the development of laws, plans, and policies that require continued protection of wild stocks and to favorable environmental conditions in the North Pacific Ocean.

&lt;i&gt;Abstract&lt;/i&gt;.—Detailed knowledge of the life history of Paddlefish &lt;i&gt;Polyodon spathula&lt;/i&gt; is a relatively recent scientific chapter. The foundation was initially established in Missouri, where there was a significant sport fishery for Paddlefish; initial observations on natural spawning and subsequent techniques for artificial propagation were developed there. Building on this impetus, a different trajectory was initiated in the late 1970s by our research group, one focusing on aquaculture with a goal of developing a breeding program to produce all-female progeny; our collaboration continued over the next three and one-half decades. Managed reproduction through artificial propagation, nursing of juveniles and grow-out for commercial production were components of this program, but more detailed techniques such as ploidy manipulation, sperm physiology, and cryopreservation were also developed. Our present objective is to highlight the improvements in artificial propagation that have been incorporated into hatchery programs. Initially, ovulation was induced with pituitary glands, but today Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone analog (LHRHa) is used; ovulated eggs were collected by laboriously stripping, then a caesarian-section technique used in sturgeon was adopted, and subsequently the Minimally Invasive Surgical Technique (MIST) was introduced. Today, a Modified MIST technique offers a more efficient means of collecting eggs. Nursing of juveniles continues to evolve; primary nursing is now commonly done in tanks where fish may be offered live food during training to a prepared diet instead of starting culture in enriched ponds managed for zooplankton. The development of Paddlefish artificial propagation has benefitted from techniques which were initially developed and used in sturgeon culture. These operational hatchery techniques are common to both culture for restoration stocking and food fish production.

&lt;em&gt;Abstract&lt;/em&gt;.—The Asian black carp &lt;em&gt;Mylopharyngodon piceus &lt;/em&gt;is of interest to the aquaculture industry in the United States as a biological control for snails and mollusks. However, past experience in North America with other Asian carps has raised concern that black carp will establish wild populations and negatively affect native populations of fish and invertebrates, especially mollusks. The demand for black carp has led biologists to seek ways to allow their use while at the same time maintaining control over their distribution and reproduction. Physical containment and restrictions on importation, release, and stocking have mostly failed. Control of reproduction holds more promise. The induction of triploidy (having three sets of chromosomes), which can render an individual biologically sterile, is of particular interest. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of proposed testing procedures used to assure genetic triploidy in black carp prior to distribution by the state of Missouri, using black carp and grass carp &lt;em&gt;Ctenopharyngodon idella&lt;/em&gt;. Our objectives were to (1) verify if the ploidy determination methodology (nuclear size) employed was 100% accurate, (2) determine growth and survival of juvenile black carp over extended periods of time under laboratory and pond conditions, and (3) histologically examine development and gametogenesis in gonads collected from triploid and diploid black and grass carps of different ages and stages of maturation. Comparison of erythrocyte nuclear size using the Coulter counter method versus the more accurate method of flow cytometry that measures DNA content indicated an error rate of 0.25% by the former method. Black carp grew and survived well in mid-Missouri ponds. Triploid grass carp males appeared to produce functional gametes, and some triploid black carp male testes had apparently normal spermatocytes within cysts. A few normally developing oocytes at previtellogenic and vitellogenic stages were observed in triploid grass carp females, and a few normal perinuclear oocytes could be identified in triploid black carp females. Currently, the standards of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s triploid grass carp voluntary inspection program are being followed by some states to manage triploid black carp. Our results indicate that although the percentage of diploid black carp that could pass through the currently proposed screening program is small, overall numbers of diploid black carp distributed in a state could be substantial depending on the number of triploids distributed. Furthermore, despite indications that triploid male black carp can be expected to be functionally sterile, reproductive studies may be warranted given the large wild populations of diploid grass carp, bighead carp &lt;em&gt;Hypophthalmichthys nobilis&lt;/em&gt;, and silver carp &lt;em&gt;H. molitrix &lt;/em&gt;in the Mississippi River basin system.
