The Hawthorne Effect is a prevalent observer effect that causes behavioral changes among participants of epidemiological studies or infection control interventions. The “Hawthorne effect” draws its name from a landmark set of studies conducted at the Hawthorne plant in the 1920s. The data from the first and most influential of these studies, the “Illumination Experiment,” were never formally analyzed and were thought to have been destroyed. Our research has uncovered these data. Existing descriptions of supposedly remarkable data patterns prove to be entirely fictional. We do find more subtle manifestations of possible Hawthorne effects. We also propose a new means of testing for Hawthorne effects based on excess responsiveness to experimenter-induced var

Hawthorne effect refers to an aspect of research that can have an influential role in the interpretation of results of in vivo studies. When participants modify their behavior upon knowing that they are a part of research, it leads to erratic assessments of the participant's behavior, thereby drawing misleading conclusions. Many existing studies, though, have been performed in a controlled laboratory setting, and assumed that measures obtained are representative of gait in a naturalistic environment (e.g., outdoors). Methods: A real-time location system tracked hospital hand hygiene auditors and recorded alcohol-based hand rub and soap dispenses. Rates of hand hygiene events per dispenser per hour within sight of auditors were compared to dispensers not exposed to auditors. Results: The event rate in dispensers visible to auditors (3.75/dispenser/hour) was significantly higher than unexposed dispensers at the same time (
