Barlow, Sarah Elizabeth. "The effects of invertebrates on the plant communities in upland hay meadows." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1878.

Abstract:
Species rich upland hay meadows are of high biodiversity importance and are internationally rare. There is increasing interest in restoring botanically diverse meadows in the uplands but little is known about the role of invertebrates. The purpose of the project was to investigate the role of (i) slugs as seedling herbivores and (ii) pollinators in affecting the plant communities. Research has revealed important interactions between invertebrates and plant life history traits with implications for grassland restoration. Slugs are known to affect plant communities by the selective seedling remo

Abstract:
Methods of increasing the number, diversity and evenness of plant species establishing in species-rich meadows created or enhanced with green hay from a semi-natural source meadow were studied. Three experiments were conducted on grasslands in Birmingham and Herefordshire: (i) Comparisons of species and community transfer resulting from green hay being strewn in consecutive years onto a glyphosated receiver meadow. (ii) The effect on species-richness of introducing green hay into a species-rich created meadow. (iii) The effect of different levels of disturbance in combination with grazing on t

Today traditionally managed wooded hay meadows only exist in small fractions of their former distributions. Because of the fragmentation and degeneration of hay meadows and the fact that pollinating insect diversity and abundance also are declining, pollination services in these habitats requires attention. To examine the pollination services in traditionally managed hay meadows I collected Ranunculus acris (Buttercup) in 20 meadows of varying quality on Gotland and evaluated the mean seed set and mean number of produced seeds per plant. I also collected Filipendula vulgaris (Dropwort) in 18 m

Abstract:
Traditionally managed hay meadows of the Pennines are highly prized for their botanical diversity. In recent decades there has been a drastic reduction in these meadows because of the negative effects on botanical diversity of widespread management changes, such as the application of inorganic fertiliser and the switch from hay to silage production. The consequences of changes in grazing regime, cut date and inorganic fertiliser application have been well documented. However, although farmyard manure application is an integral part of long term meadow management it has as yet received less sci

Abstract:
Marginal (‘upland’) areas in the UK are enjoyed by many tourists, and provide ecosystem services of clean water, soil carbon storage and agricultural produce (breeding livestock, meat and wool). However, poor financial return from the agricultural land puts it at risk of abandonment. Hay meadows in marginal areas are prized for their biodiversity, which is maintained by their traditional, low-input management including sheep production. If their management was abandoned, their biodiversity would fall. This thesis examined if bioenergy production (by anaerobic digestion (AD)) could provide a su

Abstract:
There is a pressing need to develop means of creating habitats that can contribute to the conservation of species threatened by loss of existing natural and semi-natural habitats. Decommissioned landfill presents excellent opportunities for the creation of a number of habitat types. However, landfills are often sealed with a compacted clay cap which not only creates harsh growing conditions and poor soil quality but also results in an impoverished soil fauna making it a challenging environment in which to effect rapid habitat creation. It is currently unclear to what extent the established pri

<p>One of the main reasons for the massive loss in plant species diversity is the fragmentation of habitats. In Europe, open pastures and meadows are the habitats going through the most changes during the 20th century, according to the agricultural changes. In this study vascular plants were invented at five different islands in the Lurö archipelago, Vänern, Sweden. The aim of the study was to sort out whether the diversity of plants has gone through any changes in abandoned managed grasslands compared to continuous managed grasslands. The aim was also to study if a change in the landscape has
