Abstract:
We interpret borehole geophysical logs in conjunction with lithology developed from continuous core to produce high-resolution hydro- and geo-stratigraphic profiles for the drillhole CR-622 (Strat 8) in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North Carolina. The resulting hydrologic and stratigraphic columns show a generalized relation between hydrologic and geologic units. Fresh-water aquifers encountered are the surficial,Yorktown, Pungo River and Castle Hayne.Geologic units present are of the middle and upper Tertiary and Quaternary periods, these are the Castle Hayne (Eocene), Pungo River (Miocene), Yorktown (Pliocene), James City and Flanner Beach (Pleistocene), and the topsoil (Holocene). The River Bend Formation (Oligocene) is missing as a distinct unit between the Pungo River Formation and the Castle Hayne Formation. The confining unit underlying the Yorktown Aquifer corresponds to the Yorktown Geologic Unit. The remaining hydrologic units and geologic units are hydrologically transitional and non-coincident. The lower Pungo River Formation serves as the confining unit for the Castle Hayne Aquifer, rather than the River Bend Aquifer, and separates the Pungo RiverAquifer from the upperCastle Hayne Aquifer. All geologic formations were bound by unconformities. All aquifers were confined by the anticipated hydrologic units. We conclude that CR-622 (Strat 8) represents a normal sequence in the Atlantic Coastal Plain.

A new spider crab, Eoinachoides bretoni n. sp. (Epialtidae MacLeay, 1838) from the Comfort Member of the Castle Hayne Formation (Eocene) of Onslow County, North Carolina (USA), is herein described, representing the second spider crab recovered from this member. Although the new species does not enlarge the stratigraphical range for the genus which is currently restricted from the Eocene to Miocene, it is the first report in North America, extending the palaeogeographic distribution of Eoinachoides, limited currently in the fossil record of South America. In addition, an updated list of the species of the Castle Hayne Formation is herein provided.

Abstract:
Despite the diligent efforts of archivists, there are a number of fifteenth-century composers for whom are lacking most or all of their biographical details. Not all of these are minor figures. Caron, Hayne van Ghizeghem and Loyset Compère were all active composers who achieved a large degree of contemporary esteem, evidenced not only by the number of concordances but even by direct references. Yet Caron has become so obscure that not even his forename is certain. Hayne van Ghizeghem disappears from Burgundian records while still a relatively young man. There are no records at all for Compère's early years, and his later career is plagued by gaps. At this point, it is not likely that much more documentation will be found to shed light on any of these individuals.

Abstract:
Hymenaea martiana Hayne belongs to the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae) and presents the popular name of jatobá. It is a tree that demonstrates medicinal purposes and represents a food source in Brazil. The potential contribution of each species to recommended nutrient intakes (DRI) and Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) for children and adults were calculated. A comparison between the quantified contents of micro- and macronutrients Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, S, and Zn in leaves tea and tea of the bark of this plant was made with the recommendation of FDA and ANVISA. General safety regarding metal content (Na, K, Ca, Fe, Zn, and Ni) and nonmetal (P) was assured as none of them exceed the safety limit of the daily intake. However, the content of Mn observed in the teas of H. martiana Hayne is above the UL for tolerable intake level for children aged 1-6 years. There are no limits established for the UL of Cr and S for children and adults. The data on quantification of mineral concentration in the species Hymenaea martiana Hayne obtained can serve as a tool to decide the dosage of preparations from this plant used for medicinal purposes.

Copaifera multijuga Hayne is a large plant species, popularly known as copaiba, native to Latin America and Africa. They are widely used in Amazonian folk medicine, due to the properties of oleoresin extracted from the trunk of their trees, mainly used as: diuretic, laxative, anti-tetanic, anti-inflammatory, antitussive, healing and anti-tumor. Therefore, it is of great importance for research aimed at identifying in plants substances with potential medical and biotechnological purposes. Therefore, this work aimed to search for the transcriptome of C. multijuga Hayne, which was sequenced using the Roche 454 platform, obtaining a total of 638,576 reads, assembled using the de novo methodology using the MIRA and TRINITY platforms. Being generated, from the assembly by TRINITY 53.319 contigs and 62.839 by assembly MIRA. The transcriptome annotation was performed using BLASTx (NCBI) and the functional annotation through the Gene Ontology (GO) bank. The results were categorized according to GO, where the contigs were grouped in the categories: "Cell Component" with 6.249 contigs involved in this category, "Molecular Function" with a total of 17.208 contigs and "Biological Process" with 9,499 contigs. In the three categories the contigs evidenced are involved in the primary plant metabolism. A total of 184 unigenes were detected in 22 clusters, mainly involved in responses to plant oxidative stress, terpenes, important metabolites involved in the formation of copaiba oleoresin, diterpenes (resinous portion of oleoresin) and sesquiterpenes (volatile components of oil) and unigenes related to vegetal pigmentation such as: flavonoids, carotenoids and anthocyanins. In phylogenetic analysis, evolutionary comparisons of terpene synthase enzymes, copaiba oil formation components, with enzymes from the NCBI database were made. C. multijuga TPS4-2 unigene had similarity to other Copaifera TPS4-2 terpene sequences available from the bank. Thus, in this work the transcriptome of C. multijuga was carried out with new assembly and annotation, which leads to the perspective of studies with the unigenes encoding enzymes components of the oleoresin evidenced in this work, aiming with this future research for biotechnological purposes.

Abstract:
The genus Thesium in Lithuania is represented by 2 species: Thesium ebracteatum Hayne and T. linophyllon L.. Both these species are included into the Red Data Book of Lithuania (T. ebracteatum under protection is since 2003 and T. linophyllon – is protected since 2007). Both Thesium species are ascribed to the group of vulnerable species. Furthermore, T. ebracteatum is included in to the Annex II of the EU Habitat Directive. Investigations on cenopopulations of T. ebracteatum were performed in 2003 and 2006 during June–July. Five cenopopulations were investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate populations of T. ebracteatum and to reveal dependence of population state upon habitat conditions. The study revealed that abundant and viable cenopopulations of T. ebracteatum usually occur in open, well-illuminated sites. Individuals of this species, as a rule, are well developed, with higher number of flowers. When meadows and slopes overgrow with shrubs and trees, because of law illumination T. ebracteatum flowers poorly, does not reproduce by seeds and occurs as vegetative shoots only. Accumulation of dead herb and leaf litter as well as dense and thick moss cover influence coenopopuliations of T. ebracteatum especially negatively. Results of this investigation revealed strong positive correlation between abundance of Medicago falcata and Knautia arvensis in the habitat. These species are, probably, important host plants for Thesium ebracteatum. In order to sustain or... [to full text]

Ordinarily named “copaiba”, the Copaifera multijuga Hayne (CmH) is a plant of Copaifera genus (Leguminosae-Caesalpinoideae) occurring in the Brazilian Amazon. The oil-resin of Copaifera spp. is composed of resinous acids and volatile compounds, mainly sesquiterpenes and diterpenes In this study, a range of CmH oil-resin sesquiterpenes, biological scenarios for their biosynthesis, and its chemical mechanisms were collected from several studies. Based on this data collection, on CmH transcriptome data, and on computational methods and tools, an in silico sesquiterpene metabolic network of Copaifera multijuga Hayne (CmH) was reconstructed. The resulting sesquiterpene metabolic network of CmH is a compilation of reactions covering cyclization mechanisms, predicted compounds, and biological scenarios for the biosynthesis. These results were suitably stored in a graph database designed for it, and they became findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. The workflow for the in silico reconstruction can be used for multiple organisms as well as graph grammar rules can be added or removed to achieve different types of chemical mechanisms.

Copaíbas (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae) are best known for the production of an oilresin with anti-inflammatory properties, used in the folk medicine and pharmaceutical industry. The substance is usually taken from the stem, through the use of an auger to drill the stem until the oilresin drips. This oilresin seems to be produced, stored and secreted by two types of secretory structures, canals and secretory cavities. Although many studies address the chemical analysis and the biological activity of the oilresin in species of Copaifera, the cellular mechanisms of production, storage and secretion have rarely been exploited. The objective of this study was to compare the distribution, morphology, development and secretion biology of oilresin-secreting canals and/or cavities, in the stem and in the leaf of Copaifera trapezifolia Hayne, unique among the 35 species of the genus that occurs in the Atlantic Rain Forest. The study tested wheather canals and/or cavities produce oilresin in the leaf, as reported to the stem, in order to propose alternatives to the use of the trunk of the tree as a source of secretion. Considering that the chemical nature of the secretion is already known to the stem, the ultrastructural study of canal/cavity in several stages of development aim at to associate subcellular components with substances produced and secreted. Data obtained can increase the knowledge on the production and secretion mechanisms of within epithelial cells of secretory canals and/or cavities. Materials include axillary buds containing leaf and stem primordial, besides mature middle leaflets and portions of stem in primary and secondary growth. They were collected from three individuals in the Botanic Garden of Rio de Janeiro and prepared to be employed in anatomy, histolocalization of oilresin, ultrastructure and clearing of whole leaves. Secretory cavities were observed in the leaf and the stem (primary and secondary growth), between the palisade and spongy mesophyll, petiole cortex, and shoot cortex and pith. Cavities originate from ground meristem cells by a periclinal division followed by two anticlinals; the lumen is formed by esquizogenous process. The content of the cavities of both the stem and leaf contains oil and resin, as shown in the literature for the genus. This suggests that the extraction of the oleoresin would be less harmful for the plant if extracted from the leaf. The presence of a biseriate epithelium in foliar and shoot cavities, as similarly found in C. langsdorffii, is a novelty for Leguminosae, and probably represents the replacement of epithelial cells that have secreted. In the beginning of substance production epithelial cells are polarized: nucleus near the inner periclinal wall and cytoplasm near the outer periclinal wall. The cytoplasm is rich in mitochondria, and smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum associated to vesicles (leaf) or plastids (stem). There is a greater amount of smooth endoplasmic reticulum in cells of the leaf cavities and rough endoplasmic reticulum in cells of the stem cavities. Vesicles with different content (electron-dense and electron-opaque) are produced by the reticulum, transported through microfibrils of anticlinals and inner periclinal walls and released into the lumen. Production and secretion of metabolites are not synchronized in epithelial cells of the same cavity. It is suggested that the resin component is produced in the rough reticulum and plastids, and the oily component in the smooth reticulum. The comparison between C. langsdorffii and C. trapezifolia using characters with diagnostic value represents a pioneer result if considered the number of species and morpho-species of the genus. However, the inclusion of a greater number of species in studies of secretory structures of Copaifera would certainly help the complex infrageneric division of this group.

Schimmel, Majken K. "Traces of Predation/Parasitism Recorded in Eocene Brachiopods from the Castle Hayne Limestone, North Carolina, U.S.A." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32240.

Full text
Abstract:
The Castle Hayne Limestone (Middle Eocene, North Carolina), noted for its diverse macro-invertebrate fossils, was sampled to assess if early Cenozoic brachiopods from eastern North America record any traces of biotic interactions. Systematic surveys of two North Carolina quarries yielded 494 brachiopods, dominated by one species: Plicatoria wilmingtonensis (Lyell and Sowerby, 1845). Despite subtle variations in taphonomy, taxonomy, and drilling patterns, the two sampled quarries are remarkably similar in terms of quantitative and qualitative paleoecological and taphonomic patterns. Ninety-two brachiopod shells (18.6% specimens) contained a single circular hole. Majority of drillholes were singular, perpendicular to shell surface, and drilled from the outside. In addition, ventral valves were drilled slightly more frequently than dorsal ones and larger brachiopods contained more drillholes than smaller ones. However, the size of drillholes did not correlate with the size of brachiopods. The drillholes record â live-liveâ biotic interactions, which may represent either predatory attacks or parasitic infestations or combination of those two types of interactions. A notable fraction of specimens bears multiple drillholes, which is consistent with either parasitic nature of interactions or frequent failed predatory events. Drilling frequency was high in both quarries (24.5%); this high frequency reinforces other recent reports (from other continents and Cenozoic epochs) that drilling organisms may be a frequent predator or parasite of brachiopod prey or hosts. The number of case studies reporting high frequencies of drilling in brachiopods is still limited and thus insufficient to draw reliable generalizations regarding the causes and consequences of these occasionally intense ecological interactions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
HAYNES 230 and 617 alloys are competing for use on Generation IV, high temperature gas cooled reactor components because of their good high temperature creep strength in the temperature range of 760°C and 982°C and resistance to attack in the gas cooled reactor environment. A review of the metallurgy affecting the properties in each alloy is provided. It is shown that the grain size and carbide precipitation developed during manufacture affect short term and long term ductility, fatigue life, and creep strength. For example, 230 alloy has a finer grained structure which promotes fatigue strength with a slight sacrifice in creep strength. The 617 alloy has a coarser grain structure which provides slightly higher creep resistance while sacrificing some fatigue strength. Thermal aging also introduces gamma prime precipitation to 617 alloy in addition to grain boundary carbides. This, along with grain boundary oxidation, reduces the low cycle fatigue strength of 617 alloy compared to 230 alloy. Independent studies have shown that 230 alloy possesses higher resistance to thermal fatigue than 617 alloy. However, welds of both base metals with similar weld composition have about the same thermal fatigue life. Cooling rates from solution annealing temperatures during processing affect the ductility and creep strength of these alloys with the highest cooling rates preferred for retention of ductility and creep strength. Slow cooling rates promote carbide precipitation in the grain boundaries which reduces ductility and creep strength.

Abstract:
Abstract Prior to utilizing new advanced materials in coal power plants, a large number of experimental testing is required. Test procedures are needed in specialized high temperature laboratories with state of the art facilities and precise, accurate analytical equipment capable of performing tests at a variety of temperatures and environments. In this study, the results of a unique technique involving salt spray testing at high temperatures are presented. The Haynes 282 gamma – prime (γ’) strengthened alloy fabricated by means of three different manufacturing processes: HAYNES 282 WROUGHT alloy, Haynes 282-SINT alloy, and finally Haynes 282-CAST alloy have been tested. The materials have been exposed to a salt spray corrosion atmosphere using 1% NaCl - 1% Na2SO4. Post exposure investigations have included SEM, EDS and XRD examinations. The test using salt spray of 1% NaCl - 1% Na2SO4 water solution at 550 °C for 500 hours indicted no influence on the corrosion products formation, where Cr2O3 has been developed in all three alloys, whereas NiO has been found only in Haynes 282-CAST material. On the other hand, it has been found that the fabrication process of HAYNES 282 alloy strongly influences the corrosion products formation under the high temperature exposures.

Abstract Haynes 188 is a cobalt-based superalloy used in hot section gas turbine components due to its excellent oxidation resistance and elevated temperature stability. Parts made from Haynes 188 are traditionally manufactured from wrought or forged material. Additive manufacturing (AM) may be a less time consuming and more cost-effective alternative, particularly for replacement parts. Additionally, necessary design changes can be quickly introduced into service using additive manufacturing. It is important to understand the effect of long-term thermal exposure on additively manufactured parts before they are put into demanding high temperature applications. Data on the effect of long-term thermal exposure on wrought Haynes 188 is readily available in the open literature. However, such data for additively manufactured Haynes 188 is scarce. This paper discusses an experimental study that investigated the microstructural evolution in wrought and AM Haynes 188 under long-term thermal exposure. Optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed on wrought and AM Haynes 188 in the virgin and long-term thermally exposed conditions. Mechanical test samples from the coupons were then extracted and tested in both conditions. Lastly, the fracture surfaces of the mechanical test specimens were evaluated by SEM fractography and metallography of sections through the fracture surfaces. The findings help to understand how long-term thermal exposure affects the microstructure and mechanical properties of wrought and AM Haynes 188. Most importantly, it illustrates a significant difference in microstructural response of the two materials to long term thermal exposure and its effect on mechanical properties.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to optimize and compare several different mathematical models using the experimentally determined PVTx density data of Haynes, et al. (1976), Haynes and Hiza (1976), Hiza, et al. (1976), and Hiza (1976). These data are for the liquid phase of methane, ethane, propane, normal butane, isobutane and nitrogen, and various mixtures thereof. The temperature range of the correlations was limited (95-150 K) and the pressures to those of saturation, the range of which was about 0 to 20 atmospheres. The goals of the study were to produce one or more computer models which would predict a density of LNG (liquefied natural gas) to within 0.1% of the true value when the temperature, pressure, and composition of the LNG are specified.

Duch, Michael. Performing Hanne Darboven's Opus 17a and long duration minimalist music. Norges Musikkhøgskole, August 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.22501/nmh-ar.481276.

Abstract:
Hanne Darboven’s (1941-2009) Opus 17a is a composition for solo double bass that is rarely performed due to the physical and mental challenges involved in its performance. It is one of four opuses from the composers monumental 1008 page Wünschkonzert (1984), and was composed during her period of making “mathematical music” based on mathematical systems where numbers were assigned to certain notes and translated to musical scores. It can be described as large-scale minimalism and it is highly repetitive, but even though the same notes and intervals keep repeating, the patterns slightly change throughout the piece. This is an attempt to unfold the many challenges of both interpreting, preparing and performing this 70 minute long solo piece for double bass consisting of a continuous stream of eight notes. It is largely based on my own experiences of preparing, rehearsing and performing Opus 17a, but also on interviews I have conducted with fellow bass players Robert Black and Tom Peters, who have both made recordings of this piece as well as having performed it live. One is met with few instrumental technical challenges such as fingering, string crossing and bowing when performing Opus 17a, but because of its long duration what one normally would take for granted could possibly prove to be challenging.
