Several external and internal factors can affect the performance and variability of Hemoglobin concentration [Hb] measurements using HemoCue, and documentation on the contribution of different sources of [Hb] variation is limited. We used an experimental repeated measurements design with nine randomly selected participants, three HemoCue devices, and three trained field workers. HemoCue measurements for all samples were repeated three times. The [Hb] measurement system considers four sources of error: 1) HemoCue devices, 2) field workers, 3) between individuals, and 4) within individuals. A co

Population-based surveys matched by time but using different methodologies for determining hemoglobin (Hb) concentration have shown inconsistencies in estimating anemia prevalence. This study aimed to estimate measurement errors in Hb quantification in HemoCue 201+ using venous blood (VB) and capillary blood both drops (DCB) and pools (PCB), and compare the results against those of a reference method (VB analyzed in hematology analyzers based on the cyanmethemoglobin method). Children (n = 49), adult females (n = 50), and older adults (n = 50) were randomly allocated to donate VB (4 mL) and ei

Abstract Introduction The pathophysiological implications of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) in patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) remains unclear. While novel pulse oximetry-derived measures of OSA-related cardiovascular risk have recently been described, these have not been comprehensively assessed in HFpEF. Methods Clinical, cardiovascular and polysomnography assessments have been conducted in thirty-five HFpEF patients to date. INTRODUCTION: It is known that the hepatitis B (HB) vaccine is effective, but it is alarming that sudden drops of antibody levels may coincide with the onset of adolescence. METHODS: Antibody levels against HB vaccine surface antigen (anti-HBs) and HB vaccine core antigen (anti-HBc) were measured on the blood samples of children with a mean age of 11.4 years. RESULTS: About 54.8% had protective levels of anti-HBs. Of those who were anti-HBc-positive (4.4%), an average of 218.4 anti-HBs mIU/mL was found. CONCLUSIONS: Immunological protection was found in the majority of children. However, more

Background: Shoulder arthroscopy is a common, minimally invasive surgery, but the resulting postoperative blood loss remains poorly understood. In this study, we quantified the intraoperative and postoperative blood loss, the hemoglobin (Hb) drop, and the effects of irrigation fluid retention, as well as the influence of solutions administered through infusions. Methods: A prospective observational study of 49 patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff tear (RCT) repair was conducted. However, the lack of cemented sealing of an exposed resected bone has raised concerns about the potential for greater blood loss. Abstract Carriers of typical β thalassemia alleles have microcytic hypochromic red blood cells with elevated Hb A2 values and a normal or slightly elevated level of Hb F. The increased level of Hb A2 is a reliable marker for heterozygous beta-thalassemia while Hb A2 levels within normal ranges do not exclude heterozygous beta-thalassemia.
