Abstract:
Lao students have not fared well in the American educational system. Raised in a home culture that emphasizes and values the oral tradition, the acquisition of academic writing skills has been especially problematic even for U.S.-born students of Lao heritage. Recognizing that writing is a critical component for academic success, this study examines the second language writing experiences of three long-term ESL learners of Lao heritage who took part in a nine-week writing workshop. Analysis of their writings, pre and post interviews, and observational notes from the writing workshops revealed that these students had been unmotivated to write at school. However, joining a community of emerging writers who shared similar social, academic and cultural experiences created a supportive environment for students to write about topics of personal relevance such as community, isolation, and their heritage language and culture. Participation in the workshop was associated with more positive attitudes towards writing, increased motivation, a clearer understanding of the writing process, and improved writing mechanics. Thus, we argue for the need to value, validate, and make visible students' personal experiences, including their heritage cultures and languages, as a critical strategy in motivating students to write.

Abstract:
This chapter examines a final case study, the TRPG Numenera. It finds in writers such as China Miéville and Gene Wolfe precursors of how literary studies can inform and understanding of the imaginary worlds found in a game like Numenera. Miéville, for example, finds roots for his Bas Lag trilogy in elements from TRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, articulating a granular style of textured detail like that found in the best of Lovecraft. With Wolfe, this chapter reads his blending of science fiction and fantasy elements, especially how he embraces a magical impulse. Numenera incorporates these elements into a post-anthropocene setting that imagines a post-human far future. Its cosmicism, though, lacks the pessimism of Lovecraft or a writer like Thomas Ligotto, who this chapter sees as moving beyond Lovecraft, yet retaining much of his insistence in resisting drawing the ultimate horror. This chapter ends by arguing that realized worlds such as those inspired by Lovecraft, e.g. Numenera, can also be seen in the first season of the HBO series True Detective, a series that valorized a pulp fantasism, yet refused to acknowledge it in the end.

Abstract:
This chapter is intended to be an analysis over Elif Shafak's novels which have as main theme the fight for women's rights and freedom. The writer expresses her indignation against the honor code and she pleads for women's emancipation in modern Turkey. Within her novels, Honour and The Bastard of Istanbul Elif Shafak manages to portray Turkish women both traditional and modern, pointing out the gap between these two faces of the Turkish society. An active writer, an anti-violence advocate, but also a journalist who during her interviews and articles published mainly in Western media draws the picture of HBV victims, Shafak reminds the main solution for the eradication of the honor killings and sexual discrimination: ‘Higher Education' for the Turkish girls who stay in their country and integration for those who immigrate in different corners of the world where Women's Rights are respected and the perpetrators punished for their crimes.

Abstract:
This chapter takes the reader to aging Harry Dean Stanton's Mulholland Drive home where he watched game shows, worked crossword puzzles, entertained guests with his music. Often he came in late after dinner at Ago and drinks at Dan Tana's, staying up into the wee hours, smoking his cigarettes, going to bed alone. His two closest relatives, Sara Stanton and Jim Huggins Jr., became his protectors when his health failed. At work, he scored important supporting roles in The Man Who Cried (2000) with Johnny Depp and Sean Penn's The Pledge (2001). He was memorable as devious Mormon patriarch Roman Grant in the HBO series Big Love. He was in a handful of forgettable films, too, before landing the lead in his final film Lucky (2017), written by his personal assistant Logan Sparks and Drago Sumonja. The storyline was roughly Harry Dean's own, a fitting screen farewell as health issues landed him in a series of hospitals. Sara and Jim stood guard as legions of friends and fans came to pay homage. He died fearful of death despite the consolations of Zen teaching. His remains were returned to Lexington and placed near his mother's grave.

Van Treuren, Kenneth W., Zoulan Wang, Peter Ireland, Terry V. Jones, and S. T. Kohler. "The Role of the Impingement Plate in Array Heat Transfer." In ASME 1996 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exhibition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/96-gt-162.

Full text
Abstract:
Most research involving arrays of impinging jets was conducted using steady state techniques which allow the impingement plate (through which the gas flows) to achieve an equilibrium (adiabatic) temperature during the test. Invariably, the impingement plate temperature was not reported for these tests as the floating temperature condition was taken to be representative of conditions in the application being modeled. Thermal analysis of gas turbine conditions showed the present authors that conditions in the engine could often be significantly different from this floating plate temperature state. Such conditions include engine operating point transients and situations in which the plate is fixed to the aerofoil in such a way to achieve good thermal contact. Furthermore, the capacity of the impingement plate to contribute to enhanced heat transfer by paying attention to the thermal boundary conditions at its support has not been realized. The influence of the impingement plate temperature on local target surface heat transfer was fully quantified by Van Treuren et al. (1993, 1994 and 1996), using a transient liquid crystal heat transfer technique. Superposition was used to show that the target surface heat flux can be written as the summation af two separate heat transfer coefficients. These temperature difference products quantify the contributions of the impingement plate and the target surface thermal boundary conditions. In other words:(1)q=hjTw-Tj+hpTw-TpVan Treuren et al.’s experiments showed the heat transfer coefficient for target surface heat flux and impingement plate to target surface temperature difference, hp, can be up to 40% of the heat transfer coefficient for plenum to target surface temperature difference, hj, in crossflow areas away from the jet stagnation zone. The present report covers steady state experiments conducted at three average jet Reynolds numbers (10,000, 14,000, and 18,000) and two impingement to target plate spacings (1 and 4) for an inline array of jets. The purpose of the experiments was to determine the adiabatic impingement plate temperature expressed as a non-dimensional temperature difference, θ. The data allow the difference in thermal boundary conditions between the steady state experiments and the transient heat transfer experiments to be accounted for.
