Abstract:
Although Bifidobacterium bifidum expresses lactase activity, no clinical trials have determined its impact on lactose-intolerant subjects. This study evaluated whether acute and chronic ingestion of ice creams containing B. bifidum 900791 at high (107 CFU/g) or low (105 CFU/g) concentrations improved lactose tolerance in hypolactasic subjects. Fifty subjects were selected based on a positive lactose (20 g) hydrogen breath test (HBT0) and the presence of digestive symptoms. The recruited subjects were required to perform breath tests after the acute ingestion of: (1) ice cream containing 20 g o

Sickle cell disease (SCD), the most commonly inherited hemoglobinopathy, can result in vision loss due to sickle cell retinopathy (SCR), vascular occlusions, and retinal atrophy. SCR is more common in heterozygous (HbSc) than homozygous (HbSS) patients. HbD (Punjab) is a less commonly reported form of hemoglobin in SCD, seen in northwestern states of India. Patients with sickle cell hemoglobin D disease (HbSD) can clinically behave like HbSS. We report a case of asymmetric SCR and multiple branch retinal artery occlusions in a patient with sickle cell hemoglobin D disease in central India.

Abstract:
Targeting the iron requirement of Pseudomonas aeruginosa may be an effective adjunctive for conventional antibiotic treatment against biofilm-dwelling P. aeruginosa. We, therefore, assessed the anti-biofilm activity of N,N’-bis (2-hydroxybenzyl) ethylenediamine-N,N’-diacetic acid (HBED), which is a synthetic hexadentate iron chelator. The effect of HBED was studied using short-term (microtitre plate) and longer-term (flow-cell) biofilm models, under aerobic, anaerobic, and microaerobic (flow-cell) conditions and in combination with the polymyxin antibiotic colistimethate sodium (colistin). Abstract:
This study tested the anticoagulant effect of cyclodextrin (CD) hyper-branched-based polymers (HBCD-Pols). These polymers were synthesized and tested for their coagulant characteristics in vitro and in vivo. Due to their polymeric structure and anionic nature, the polymers can chelate Ca2+, reducing the free quantity in blood. HBCD-Pol increased the blood clotting time, PT, and aPTT 3.5 times over the control, showing a better effect than even ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), as occured with recalcification time as well. A titration of HBCD-Pol and EDTA showed exciting differences in th
