Full textMulti-terminal High Voltage Direct Current (MTDC) grids, have been proven to be an adequate solution for massive integration of renewable energy power to existing High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) grids. Indeed, HVDC grids are capable of transmitting efficiently high level of power over very long distances compared to HVAC grids since, from a certain power to be transmitted, there is a limited distance from which the AC power transmission loses its efficiency and becomes very costly compared to DC power transmission. One of the main challenges related to the development of theses multi-terminal HVDC grids, or Supergrids, concerns their protection against DC short-circuit faults. In this thesis, a new concept of protection strategy for MTDC grids in case of permanent short-circuit fault on a DC cable has been proposed. The strategy is based on the non-selective fault clearing philosophy where the priority is given to the suppression of the fault current before isolating the faulty transmission line. The strategy is based on mechanical DC breakers and no fault current limiting devices are used. A primary protection sequence as well as two back-up sequences in case of breakers operation failure have been developed, tested and validated through Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) and Real-Time (RT) simulations. Also, algorithms to be implemented on protective relays have been designed with the help of the Structured Analysis and Design System (SADT). This PhD thesis has been performed in the frame of the SuperGrid Institute, a collaborative research platform aiming to develop technologies for the future electricity transmission network and bringing together the expertise of industries such as GE grid solutions and public research laboratories as the Grenoble Electrical Engineering Laboratory (G2Elab)

Full textEpigenetics represents changes in gene expression without altering the nucleic sequence of DNA. One of the main mechanisms of regulation of gene expression is chromatin remodeling via histone acetyltransferases and histone deacetylases (HDAC), which may or may not allow gene transcription. An abnormal expression of HDACs is correlated with many diseases (alcohol dependence, inflammation as well as cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, cancers...). It is essential to target the selectivity of one isoform among the 11 known zinc-dependent HDACs to avoid side effects. The aim of the research was to design and synthesize new compounds, verify their inhibitory activity against class I or II HDACs and their cytotoxicity on four cell lines: HaCaT, V79-4, SH-SY5Y and PC12. We focused on the pharmacomodulations of ZBG, the linker and the cap of known molecules such as MS-275 (selective for class I of HDACs), SAHA and TSA (spacer in C5 or C6) with a strong inhibitory activity towards HDACs, but not selective. We concentrated on the pharmacomodulations of known HDACI modifying the zinc binding domain (sulfonylhydrazide, catechol), the nature of the spacer (alkyl, aryl) and the surface recognition group (bis-aryl, adamantyl, indolopyridazinone). A library of 57 new compounds was designed in three series. None of them showed satisfactory inhibitory activity. The selected compounds did not show cytotoxic activity on neuronal cell lines. Based on this research, it is possible to create new compounds in the indolopyridazinone series in order to test them

Full textThe synthesis and characterization of new types of solid polymer electrolytes based on hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl cellulose grafted with different polyethers were investigated. The synthesis is based on the reaction between the cellulose derivative and mono and difunctional isocyanates prepared from amines of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide. It were also synthesized films of hydroxyethyl cellulose grafted with hexamethylene diisocyanate and phenylisocyanate. These materials were characterized through techniques of infrared, ultraviolet and nuclear magnetic ressonance spectroscopies, thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. The films of polysaccharide and polyether that contained LiClO4 showed conductivity values of the order of 10-5 Scm-1 at 60oC. The value of this parameter seems to be independent of the cellulose derivative parameters and it is better related to the type of isocyanate grafted on the polysaccharide chain. The conductivity and chain mobility results show that the systems studied here can be applied as solid polymer electrolytes. The materials synthesized using commercial isocyanates as grafting reactant did not show interesting conductivity response.

Full textHDR imaging and 3D imaging are two areas in which the simultaneous but separate development has been growing in recent years. On the one hand, HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging allows to extend the dynamic range of traditionnal images called LDR (Low Dynamic Range). On the other hand, 3Dimaging offers immersion in the shown film with the feeling to be part of the acquired scene. Recently, these two areas have been combined to provide 3D HDR images or videos but few viable solutions existand none of them is available to the public. In this thesis, we propose a method to generate 3D HDR images for autostereoscopic displays by adapting a multi-viewpoints camera to several exposures acquisition. To do that, neutral density filters are fixed on the objectives of the camera. Then, pixel matchingis applied to aggregate pixels that represent the same point in the acquired scene. Finally, radiance is calculated for each pixel of the set of images by using a weighted average of LDR values. An additiona lstep is necessary because some pixels have wrong radiance. We proposed a method based on the color of adjacent pixels and two methods based on the correction of the disparity of those pixels. The first method is based on the disparity of pixels of the neighborhood and the second method on the disparity independently calculated on each color channel. This pipeline allows the generation of 3D HDR image son each viewpoint. A tone-mapping algorithm is then applied on each of these images. Their composition with filters corresponding to the autostereoscopic screen used allows the visualization of the generated 3DHDR image

Full textToday’s electronics in aviation (avionics) are more complex than ever before. With higher requirements on safety and reliability and with new SoC (System on Chip) technology, the validation and verification of designs meet new challenges. In commercial and military aircraft there are many safety-critical systems that need to be reliable. The consequences of a failure of a safety-critical system onboard a civil or military aircraft are immeasurably more serious than a glitch or a bit-flip in a consumer appliance or Internet service delivery. If possible hazards are found early in the design process, a lot of work can be saved later on. Certain structures in the code are prone to produce glitchy logic and timing problems and should be avoided. This thesis will strengthen Saab Avitronics knowledge of adaptable rule checking tools for HDL, with a market analysis of the tools available. Moreover will it evaluate two of the most suitable tools and finally it will describe some of the design issues that exist when coding safety-critical systems. Finally it is concluded that the introduction of static rule checking tools will help the validator to find dangerous constructs in the code. However, it will not be possible to fully automate rule checking for safety-critical systems, because of the high requirements on reliability.

The Manafwa River basin spans several districts in Eastern Uganda. Over the years, frequent floods have constantly posed a great threat to the local communities in these districts. The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) intends to design a precipitation based flood forecasting system for the Manafwa River Basin. Towards this end, the URCS initiated collaboration with MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in January 2013, in an attempt to establish a hydrologic modeling system that relates upstream precipitation with downstream stream discharge using ArcGIS, HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS. This work is dedicated to present the progress in the modeling endeavor, provide technical guidance to the extent possible, and facilitate hydrologic modeling efforts of similar nature. The main focus is on the loss methods used in HEC-HMS: the Curve Number loss method and the Initial and Constant loss method It is found out that the neither the Curve Number nor Initial and Constant loss method is perfectly suitable to modeling both short-term and long term simulations. The Curve Number method is able to better model the precipitation-runoff processes in short term simulations. The Initial and Constant loss method tends to underestimate water volume runoff in short term simulations from what is observed The Curve Number loss method produced results that are on average closer to observed values in short term simulations; however, the resulting curve number values from calibration are considerably lower than the estimated values.

Full textLayered double hydroxides (LDHs) can be used to modify or incorporate characteristics into a variety of thermoplastic or thermoset polymers. The present work aims to synthesize and characterize Mg:Al LDHs intercalated with glycinate, alaninate and dodecyl sulfate and to use them in the formulation of bi-component LDH/epoxy nanocomposites, with distinct LDH content, obtained by casting, and tricomponent LDH/epoxy/glass fiber composites molded by RTM. The LDH was synthesized, using the coprecipitation method, and incorporated into epoxy with the aid of solvents and ultrasonication. For that, acetone, chloroform and DMF solvents were evaluated, and DMF yielded the best performance as dispersing agent. The obtained composites and nanocomposites were evaluated regarding the quality of the LDH dispersion in the matrix, their flame resistance characteristics (horizontal and vertical testing), thermal stability, mechanical and dynamic-mechanical properties. The incorporation of LDH caused an increase in thermal stability of the composites and all samples containing LDH showed self-extinguishing behavior in the vertical burning test, and a large decrease in the burning rate was found compared to neat epoxy. The use of LDH did not significantly alter the mechanical and dynamic-mechanical properties of the composites, which was only achieved by using a glass fiber reinforcement.
