Abstract:
Using William Shakespeare’s character Mistress Nell Quickly as an example, this article contends that familiarity with both the literary tradition of alewives and the historical conditions in which said literary tradition brewed aids in revising our interpretation of working-class women on the early modern stage. Mistress Quickly, the multi-faceted comic character in three history plays and a city-comedy, resembles closely those women with whom Shakespeare and his contemporaries would have lived and worked in their day-to-day lives. Rather than dismissing her role as minor or merely comic, as previous criticism largely has, scholarship can embrace this character type and her narrative as an example to complicate teleological progressions for women.

Abstract:
This article is a case study addressing the issues of concubines, legitimacy and inheritance in early modern Japan. Although there was some discussion about the legal status of concubines/mistresses in the late nineteenth century in Meiji Japan, the topic has attracted surprisingly little recent research. The Meiji debate was concerned with how to treat concubines under a system that both outlawed bigamy and recognized common law marriages. The later academic debate refers back to the earlier interpretations of the legal and social status of concubines, with one side claiming they were nearly equal to wives and the other claiming they were little more than servants. In this study I review the above debates and then address the issue with a study of an inheritance case that began in 1819 when Fukui Sakuzaemon adopted an heir from outside the family. Sakuzaemon's concubine Iwa played an important role in the inheritance agreement and in further developments in the suit, including later efforts to disinherit the new head and gain support for her daughters by Sakuzaemon. I use the documents from this complicated case to analyse the social and legal statuses of Iwa and the relationship of her daughters to the Fukui family and its assets.

Abstract:
On Wednesday 1 June 1692, a young man, about fifteen years of age, went to his bed. He had no sooner lain down than he heard ‘a Hand sweeping on the wall’. Then it came ‘with a rushing noise on his beds-head’ and ‘stroaked him over the face twice very gently’. Opening his eyes he saw before him ‘an apparition of a woman cloathed in black apparel’. Following this eerie encounter, other members of the family claimed to have seen the apparition ‘in the same room with a lighted candle’. Perplexed by these unexplained visits the mistress of this ‘Civiliz’d Family’ wrote to the editors of the bi-weekly periodical the Athenian Mercury desiring to know ‘what should be the occasion of the disturbance’ and ‘whether it be advisable to ask the question of the apparition’. Samuel Wesley (father of John), Church of England minister and co-editor of the Athenian Mercury, advised the woman to have a chat with the ghost, to find out its purpose and to discover how it might be satisfied.

Abstract:
Abstract Decentralization has been a means to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the management of local government affairs. Tanzania has undergone a reform through decentralization by devolution (D by D) and shifted relative power to lower levels of government known as local government authorities. The purpose is to improve the management of local government affair including the management of community health, free basic education and the management of contracts through public-private partnership. The objective of this paper is to review and analyse on how D by D has enhanced efficiency and effectiveness in the management of local government affairs in Tanzania. Data were collected through reviewing different documents including published journal articles, unpublished Master and PhD thesis/dissertations, government reports and online materials. Efficiency and effectiveness in the management of local government affairs are enhanced by D by D as there are improvements in the management of the community health fund as the number of households enrolled is consecutively increasing in the past five years from 543,328 in 2012/2013 to 2,251,055 in 2017/2018giving a total of 13,506,330 beneficiaries out of the total population. In the management of free fee basic education, head masters, mistress and head teachers in Singida and Ruangwa districts are successful in overcoming the challenges of free fee basic education while there is improved community participation in the management of management of contracted services in Ulanga district council. This paper recommends for reviewing and analysing how D by D has enhanced management of waste collection, the use of Government electronic Payment Gateway (GePG) in revenue collection and the efficiency and effectiveness of Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA).

Abstract:
Pero nuestro corpus propiamente hablando consta de seis títulos heredados o adquiridos (Lord, Lady, Sir, Gentleman, Mr., Mrs.), veinte fórmulas de tratamiento de respeto, entre pares, incluyendo seis insultantes o degradantes (Your Grace, Lady, Your Ladyship, Your Worship, Worshipful, Right Worshipful, Right honourable, Sir, Fellow, Goodman/Goodwife, Master, Mistress, Madam, Miss, Rascal, Rogue, Sirrah, Wench, Hussy, Slut) y cuatro fórmulas paródicas o burlescas (Your Mastership, Your Solicitorship, His Wise Head, Reverend Ladies), extraídos de tres comedias ‘estuardas’ (Carlos I y Carlos II) del siglo XVII: A new way to pay old debts (1633) de Philip Massinger, The country wife (1675) de William Wycherley y Love for love (1695) de William Congreve.Palabras clave: onomástica, equivalencia histórica y cultural, traducción, naturalización, comedia del inglés moderno temprano

Abstract:
The article considers the development of social attitudes including gender imperatives in Yakut mythology and epic. The analysis of the role of the character of Urung Aiyy Toyon in the formation of the patriarchal organization of the Yakut society is carried out. The character of Urung Aiyy Toyon was a patron of the new social order and a tool for supplanting the matrilineal community cult and its leading character the mistress of the Earth. The work highlights the stages of the historical development of the character of Urung Aiyy Toyon, associated with structural changes in the Yakut society during the process of transition from matrilineality to patrilineality, as well as the ideological function of this cult. The character of Urung Aiyy Toyon acted as a bearer of typical features of the social group of toyons, and myths about him turned out to be an active element of the structures of domination in the Yakut society. The cult of Urung Aiyy Toyon was formed and maintained as an ideological rationale for the power of the toyons, heads of individual patronymias. It was necessary in order to bring and strengthen the idea of a patriarchal organization in Yakut mythology. The character of Urung Aiyy Toyon is self-sufficient and does not need magical qualities and heroic deeds. For creators and consumers of mythology its social status as the head of the agnationalcommunitythe was most important. In the myth and the heroic epic of Olonkho, Urung Aiyy Toyon reinforces the patriarchal genealogy. In the cult of Urung Aiyy Toyon, the idea of male dominance is vividly represented and the tendencies that lead to the formation of a gender hierarchy in Yakut society are manifested. The mythology of Urung Aiyy Toyon was the rationale for the system of agnatic kinship, sanctifying the norms of customary law, reinforcing male dominance and women's subordinate position. The myth of Urung Aiyy Toyon appears as an active element of the structures of domination in Yakut society, which functioned as a tool for consolidating gender inequality and establishing the power of the Yakut toyons.

Abstract:
IntroductionDespite considerable improvements in vaccination coverage over the last decade, half of the world’s unvaccinated and undervaccinated children are located in Africa. The role of institutional trust in explaining vaccination gaps has been highlighted in several qualitative reports but so far has only been quantified in a small number of high-income countries.MethodsWe matched information on child vaccination status from the Demographic Health Surveys with information on institutional trust from the Afrobarometer surveys at the subnational level. A total of 166 953 children from 41 surveys administered in 22 African countries covering 216 subnational regions were used. Based on a principal component analysis, we constructed an institutional mistrust index that combined the level of mistrust in the head of state, parliament, electoral system, courts and local government. Associations between institutional mistrust and child vaccination uptake were assessed with multivariable fixed effects logistic regressions that controlled for time-invariant subnational region characteristics and various child, caregiver, household and community characteristics.ResultsA 1 SD increase in the institutional mistrust index was associated with a 10% (95% CI of ORs: 1.03 to 1.18) increase in the likelihood that a child had not received any of eight basic vaccines and with a 6% decrease in the likelihood a child had received all of the basic vaccines (95% CI: 0.92 to 0.97). Institutional mistrust was negatively associated with the likelihood that a child had received each of the eight basic vaccinations (p<0.05).ConclusionsChild vaccination rates in Africa are considerably lower in areas in which the local population displays high levels of mistrust towards local authorities. Institutional mistrust is an important dimension of vaccine hesitancy, considered as one of the most important threats to global health. Empowering local authorities with resources and communication strategies to address institutional mistrust may be needed to close the remaining vaccination gaps in Africa.

Abstract:
6521 Background: We surveyed breast cancer patients in New York City to understand why women did not receive radiotherapy (RT) following lumpectomy, chemotherapy, or hormonal therapy for hormone receptor negative or positive tumors >1 cm, respectively. Methods: 258 New York City women recently surgically treated for a new primary stage I or II breast cancer were surveyed about their experience of care, knowledge and beliefs about breast cancer and its treatment. Adjuvant treatment data were obtained from in and out-patient chart abstraction. Principal components factor analysis was used to create scales of adjuvant treatment beliefs and knowledge, medical mistrust, physician communication about treatment and social support. Scales were scored to 100. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to determine differences between treated and untreated women; odds ratios were converted to adjusted relative risks. Results: Compared to treated women, untreated women were less likely to know adjuvant therapies increase survival (66 vs 75; p < 0.0001), had greater mistrust (64 vs 53; p = 0.001), and less self efficacy (92 vs 97; p < 0.05); there was no association between physician communication of treatment information and patient knowledge and beliefs about adjuvant treatment (r = 0.8; p = 0.21). Multivariate analysis found that compared to those who were treated, untreated women were more likely to be 70 years or older (OR = 4.46; 95%CI: 1.9–10.7), more likely to have a comorbidity (OR = 3.39;1.5–7.9), more likely to express mistrust in the medical delivery system (OR = 1.03;1.0–1.1), and less likely to believe adjuvant treatments beneficial (OR = 0.91; 0.87–0.96) (model c = 0.84; p =< 0.0001). Conclusions: Patient knowledge and beliefs about treatment and medical mistrust are mutable factors associated with underuse of adjuvant therapies. Despite physicians' discussion of treatment, patients do not have a clear understanding of treatments' benefits and risks. This disconnect between what is said and what is heard may be mediated and addressed by dealing with patients' trust in and concerns about the medical delivery system. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ṭuqūs al-išārāt wa-l-taḥawwulāt (Rituals of Signs and Transformations), published in 1994, is a play which can be attributed to the last phase of Saʿd Allāh Wannūs’s literary production. At this stage, the Syrian author’s political commitment is no longer expressed through the interest for the collective dimension, but it focuses on the individual, considered as a pivotal element for social change. In Ṭuqūs, Saʿd Allāh Wannūs revisits history from an individual point of view, fragmenting it into a multiplicity of micro-narratives. During the 1880s in Damascus, the muftī, the chief religious legal authority, and the leader of the ašrāf, the descendants of the Prophet, are involved in a feud that splits the city into factions and brings it on the verge of anarchy. When the chief of police arrests the leader of the ašrāf while he is engaged in lovemaking with his mistress in his semi-private garden, the muftī concocts a scheme to save his enemy’s reputation, but his real aim is to subdue him and get rid of him. This event triggers a series of transformations involving the identities of the characters. Thus, the leader of the ašrāf, a regular of prostitutes and assiduous drinker, suddenly becomes a mystic with ascetic ambitions, while the upright muftī loses his head for a high-ranking woman who leaves her respectable life to become a prostitute. The whole society is destabilized by the desires of the characters. Desire not only affects their individual identity, but it also exerts influence on their social position, undermining a system of norms based on hypocrisy and on the division between the ‘latent’ and the ‘manifest’.

Abstract:
In this chapter, Kathryn Ledbetter considers some of the ‘invisible’ figures that were at the heart of domestic magazines. If, as Beetham notes, domestic magazines often elided the presence of the servant in the middle-class home, Ledbetter’s essay addresses this lacuna head on. Although a topic ripe for satire by the likes of Punch, ‘women’s periodicals and household manuals rarely made light of the responsibilities involved in proper service’ (33). Part of being a successful middle-class woman, these publications maintained, was the effective regulation of servants, who without such monitoring might succumb to immorality and poor working habits. Indeed, Ledbetter notes that a ‘common response in women’s periodicals was that bad mistresses made bad servants’ (34). Yet what did servants make of such discussions of their lives in these magazines or in the servants’ magazines that more directly targeted them?

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the relationship between East Germany and Poland during the last phase of the Cold War. It explains how the historical legacy of German–Polish relations infused the relationship of both countries with mistrust, despite the officially proclaimed brotherhood of a “socialist community” mandated from Moscow. Personal enmity between communist leaders Walter Ulbricht and Władysław Gomułka, conceptual differences of notions of statehood, and rivaling foreign policy goals and ideas about tolerance for domestic opposition since the end of the 1970s only exacerbated these tensions, which not even successful military cooperation under the Warsaw Pact umbrella was able to alleviate. Held together by their relationship to the Soviet hegemon, the officially required “trust” between the two countries fully disintegrated in the second half of the 1980s.

Abstract:
In chapter four, Hitchcott further considers the difficulties faced when fictionalising the testimonies of genocide survivors, as well as the difficulties and prejudice that survivors face in present day Rwanda. Attention is brought to the perceived social hierarchy that exists in post-genocide Rwanda, and where survivors find themselves placed within it by fellow citizens. A culture of mistrust exists between those that returned to Rwanda after fleeing the genocide and those that remained but survived as it is assumed they committed atrocities themselves in order to live. Hitchcott analyses the isolation of survivors as depicted in Rwanda genocide fiction, particularly in Jean-Marie Vianney Rurangwa’s ‘Au sortir de l’enfer’, and ultimately how these authors attempt to re-establish the dignity of survivors by creating characters with stories to be heard and understood.

Abstract:
The academic-media nexus represents a liminal space where intellectual work is regularly held up to public judgment. Three sources of control impinge on the nexus as a sphere for ideas that challenge orthodoxies: self-imposed instrumentalism of intellectuals; a new form of anti-intellectualism that features systemic surveillance of academic discourse; and the strategic communication of university administrations. The contemporary university is instrumental and strategic rather than anti-rationalist in the control of intellect. Still, mistrust of intellect thrives at private and public colleges, entrusted with preservation of cultural heritage. When faculty take risks in the public sphere, they should not assume that administrators will support them against populist blowback. A final section contemplates implications of risk-averse tactics for public perceptions of intellect and its contributions to political discourse and policy.

Abstract:
The reality of the Anthropocene hangs over our heads as we enter the 2020s. Humanity is facing multiple crises, and it has become clear that political and government structures are incapable of dealing with them adequately and equitably. We are seeing the erosion of the liberal democratic state and its institutions, the appeal of populism, mistrust both of politicians and of political institutions, and powerful interests responding by increasing surveillance, secrecy, and control. The Anthropocene also challenges the anthropocentrism that has been taken for granted in the world view of Western modernity, but is proving to be unsustainable and indeed harmful to human and non-human flourishing. This presents a new set of challenges for social work, if it is to remain relevant to the needs of the society, and also to remain true to its value base. This chapter argues that social work needs to explore and adopt theory/practice that is community-based, political, anarchistic, decolonised, matriarchal, and grounded in an ecological epistemology that is both Indigenous and post-human.

Abstract:
Highlights a set of transformative steps to changing the mindset of the stakeholders in the binational negotiations. Seeing is Believing illustrates how, overcoming a long-held pattern of mistrust, the U.S. invited the Mexican negotiators to tour the water infrastructure in the U.S. The visits along the Colorado River Basin led to a new collaborative understanding of the parties’ motivations and concerns. Sharing Tools for Better Understanding demonstrates how, by establishing a working group to jointly share data, train experts, and test modeling tools, the U.S. and Mexico built a common reference framework, unlike ever before, which enabled Mexican technical experts to better evaluate the forecasts and scenarios that underpin operations on the U.S. side of the River. This, in turn, allowed both countries to start exploring mutually beneficial proposals that otherwise would not have been considered. Putting Yourself in Their Shoes recounts how, as the U.S. negotiators developed an increasingly better grasp of Mexico’s back-table context, and vice versa, each side was able to actively help the other craft a more robust agreement that would represent a win for its constituents back home (victory speech).

Abstract:
Sustainable (environmentally friendly) modern construction is not limited only to use of natural and environmentally friendly materials. The concept of the construction is an important factor and that is applied to local materials, especially if they come from renewable sources. The sustainable (environmentally friendly) building principles, methods of construction from straw, the essential building requirements for construction from straw are discussed in the article. Straw as a building material used for a very long time, but this usage is often associated with certain mistrust, fears: the building will burn, the mice, rats are attacking, etc. Straw building uses raw materials which are agricultural waste. Buildings constructed from straw decompose in the end of their lifecycle and the construction waste in the area of construction is biodegradable, consequently, it is not necessary to take them away to a landfill. The evaluation of the global and Lithuanian experience of using straw and the structures in which straw are used shows, that the essential requirements can be provided if the straw and timber-framed buildings with straw as a heat insulating material are constructed properly, they use to meet the essential requirements according to the Law on Construction and the European Council and Parliament Regulation No 305/2011.
