AbstractObjectivePrevious work studying vegetarians has often found that they have lower blood pressure (BP). Reasons may include their lower BMI and higher intake levels of fruit and vegetables. Here we seek to extend this evidence in a geographically diverse population containing vegans, lacto-ovo vegetarians and omnivores.DesignData are analysed from a calibration sub-study of the Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2) cohort who attended clinics and provided validated FFQ. Obesity prevention in youth is a health priority, and teaching healthy habits toward this end is one of a school nurse’s many responsibilities. A school nurse developed and implemented a school-wide, 2-week-long Activity and Nutrition Challenge (ANC) using the evidence-based 5-2-1-0 initiative to prevent and fight childhood obesity. Despite minimal promotion, nearly half of the students at two elementary schools participated and earned points by following the guidelines in the ANC. The amount of chocolate milk consumed by students dropped significantly during the ANC, showing that the healthy

Optical diffusion imaging in highly scattering media such as tissue, as an alternative to X-ray tomography, presents significantly lower health risks, and has successfully demonstrated its potential in biomedical applications. Although current reconstruction algorithms have been applied with some success, there are a number of opportunities for improving both the accuracy of the reconstructions and the speed of convergence. Most studies of frequency-resolved diffusion imaging involve casting the diffusion as a Helmholtz equation, which involves the approximation that ∇D = 0. We describe here a

Abstract. Introduction. When using personal protective equipment (PPE) against power-frequency electric fields (PFEF), there is a problem associated with the deterioration of the humans thermal state during a workshift when working in a hot environment. The shielding and shunting elements of the PPE increase the weight of the PPE and has an additional thermal load on a person working in a hot environment and so have a negative impact on his thermal state. The change in the indicators of the persons’ thermal state can be considered as a criteria for the impact of a complex of factors that deter

Abstract. India is a developing country, and the main source of power generation is coal based thermal power plants, contributing to more than 70% of the total electricity generated in the country [1]. The predominant byproduct of a coal-fired thermal power station consists of bottom ash and fly ash. Coal-burning in thermal power plants releases gaseous and particulate pollution into the environment affecting various aspects of the environment & human health, leading to premature deaths and illnesses [2, 3]. The present study investigates the impact of coal ash, more specifically fly ash &

Using data for all 2,454 municipalities of Mexico for the period 1980-2010, this paper analyzes the relationship between exposure to extreme temperatures and precipitation and death, as well as the relationship between severe weather and agricultural income and crop production in the country. It is found that extreme heat increases mortality, while the health effect of extreme cold is generally trivial. Precipitation extremes seem to affect the agricultural system, but their impact on mortality is ambiguous. More specifically, exchanging one day with a temperature of 16-18 °C for one day with

In education, Cambodia has made considerable progress towards achieving universal nine-year basic education. Supply-side issues are more important than demand-side factors, particularly the poor quality of teaching and learning; relatively low, albeit growing, government funds for education; corruption in service del

Background: COVID-19 had a huge impact on the wellbeing of healthcare workers (HCWs). This is well documented during the first peak of the pandemic. With cases in the UK rising for a third peak, hospitalisations and deaths surpassing the first, there is very little known about the mental health of HCWs during this time. Methods: Using a questionnaire, data was collected from patient-facing staff at Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University Trust to quantify and compare the period prevalence of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD during the first peak (P1: March-May 2020) and third peak

Background. Untreated maternal mental health disorders can have devastating sequelae for the mother and child. For women who are currently or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding, a critical question is whether the benefits of treating psychiatric illness with pharmacologic interventions outweigh the harms for mother and child. Methods. We conducted a systematic review to assess the benefits and harms of pharmacologic interventions compared with placebo, no treatment, or other pharmacologic interventions for pregnant and postpartum women with mental health disorders. Abstract:
There is increased demand for high quality fruit produced and marketed with reduced chemical inputs to minimize toxic effects on human health and the environment. Granny Smith (GS) apple quality is reduced by two major physiological disorders, superficial scald and bitter pit (BP). These disorders cause great loss to apple growers worldwide. Superficial scald is commonly controlled by chemical treatments, mainly the antioxidant diphenylamine (DPA) and/or the ethylene action inhibitor, 1-methylcyclopropene (1–MCP). Both chemicals are ineffective in controlling bitter pit incidence. We proposed
