The concept “radiation detriment” has been debated intensively in the pages of the ICRP Publica-tion 103 (2007), new radiation epidemiological data obtained after 2007 have also been brought into discussion. For radiation detriment calculation radiation risk models based on data of the study of Japanese cohort of atomic bombings survivors were used. Models developed for esti-mating radiation risk factors take account of gender and age at exposure. Now ICRP has estimat-ed radiation detriment in specially designed standard population by averaging the estimates based on age at exposure. The conce

Radiation detriment is a basic measure which is currently applied to assess health risks caused by exposure to ionizing radiation. This concept was developed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) more than 30 years ago; it has both certain advantages and drawbacks that limit the scope of its possible application. A certain drawback is that this value is used exclusively to assess effects produced on health by radiation thus making it ineligible for correct comparative analysis of different risks. Abstract:
Structural mental health and substance use (MHSU) stigma is a health equity and human rights issue that results in significant disparities in health outcomes for people with MHSU disorders. Two early career psychiatric physicians share the vicarious and witnessed experiences of their patients within the public mental health system, especially those deemed to be high risk. The authors also describe barriers patients face, and the unacceptable reality that mental health emergencies are systematically not handled as such, to the detriment of patient, family and provider well-being. We examined patterns of Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR) funding on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research. From 1999 to 2013, CIHR funded 190 ASD grants worth $48 million. Biomedical research received 43% of grants (46% of dollars), clinical research 27% (41%), health services 10% (7%), and population health research 8% (3%). The greatest number of grants was given in 2009, but 2003 saw the greatest amount. Funding is clustered in a handful of provinces and institutions, favouring biomedical research and disfavouring behavioural interventions, adaptation, and institutional respo

Summary The aim of this study was to examine the impact of regional diets on the health of the poor in mid-Victorian Britain. Contemporary surveys of regional diets and living condition were reviewed. This information was compared with mortality data from Britain over the same period. Although there was an overall improvement in life expectancy during the latter part of the 19th century, there were large regional differences in lifestyle, diet and mortality rates. Dietary surveys showed that the poor labouring population in isolated rural areas of England, in the mainland and islands of Scotla

Previous analyses indicate that there are a number of potentially serious health risks associated with the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The objective of this work is to provide further insight into the potential health impacts of the TPP by investigating labour market pathways. The impact of the TPP on employment and working conditions is a major point of contention in broader public debates. In public health literature, these factors are considered fundamental determinants of health, yet they are rarely addressed in analyses of trade and investment agreements. Instead of a solid theoretical base from which to describe, study and understand human-information technology interactions we continue to have fragmented, unelaborated understandings. This has resulted in a continuing focus on technical system performance and increasingly managerial out

Recent years have seen the re-emergence of charges of AIDS exceptionalism in response to ‘revolutionary’ increases in global funding for health that have coalesced around HIV/AIDS treatment. These increases are argued to illustrate that AIDS demands an exceptional and exaggerated portion of global resources to the detriment of other health needs and the strengthening of health systems. I argue in contrast that AIDS ‘exceptionalism’ in funding represents a welcome departure from a long-standing norm that tolerates grossly insufficient domestic and global allocations to health. The current recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) are based on the classification of exposure situations as: planned, emergency and existing exposure situations. In planned situations, annual risk limits are set to limit human exposure. However, in emergency exposure situations or in existing exposure situations, permanent (annual) source control is not always possible, so the radiation protection strategy by monitoring the individual annual risk limit cannot always be practically implemented either. The purpose of this work is to assess the radiatio
