Abstract:
The use of qualitative methods is increasing in the health education literature, and there is need for more information on these methods and their use. This investigation looks at qualitative sampling practices as reported in the 93 qualitative or mixed-method studies published in Health Education & Behavior from 1980 to 2000. It focuses particularly on the extensiveness of sampling in this research (i.e., the volume and diversity of information collected about the phenomenon of interest). Among these studies, individual interviews averaged 104 ± 134 informants(range 2 to 720) and 92 ± 39 minutes. Focused group interviews averaged 10 groups (range 1 to 40) and 90 ± 25 minutes. Observational studies usually occurred in multiple sites and involved approximately 16 to 24 months of fieldwork. Document analysis extensiveness varied considerably on a variety of indicators. Future qualitative research would benefit from more complete consideration and fuller reporting of sample extensiveness.

Abstract:
Observational studies are not uncommon in health professional education and are frequently associated with ethnography as a methodology. This article aims to provide an overview of how observational studies are used in health professional education research. Firstly, we explore some ways in which observational methods can be used in association with a range of qualitative research stances, and then we focus on the practicalities of undertaking observational research. Next, we use two case studies to illustrate some of the key decision points when designing observational research. Finally, we collate resources and consider the implications of contemporary world events on observational research.

Abstract:
This article takes the form of a case study of a master's course for health and development professionals working in the field of primary health care. It argues the need for health professionals to critically examine research paradigms and the assumptions that inform them, considering their appropriateness to primary health care, a health strategy based on a recognition of the relationship between inequalities and health status. Conventional training of health professionals does not encourage health workers to reflect critically on their research practice. This can be facilitated through an educational strategy that emphasises issues of inequality as central to health and addresses issues of power and purpose in research activity.

Abstract:
This mental health curriculum module, developed from the BPD-NIMH Task Force, provides an overview of the research on the Family Psychoeducational model as it has been applied to the New York state system of mental health. This module was developed from the rigorous research that was conducted to examine the effectiveness of this model of service delivery: McFarlane, W. et. al. article, “Dissemination of New York states family psychoeducation project.” The module has been developed for inclusion in the advanced practice, policy and/or research courses of undergraduate social work education. Specific course content is provided for BSW educators, as well as ideas and options for inclusion in the class structure. This module is meant to serve as a piece of the entire course content.
