Abstract:
The focus of this paper was to determine research support benchmarks from higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa for application in the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). These benchmarks were sought from networked international HEIs and leading research HEIs in the country. Other benchmarks were sourced from cost-effective models of deployment from other service departments within SMU. The study involved nine HEIs and SMU human resources (HR) department for benchmarking. The study found that the statistics departments were used in these HEIs for major research sup

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with approaches used by the Scottish Programme for Clinical Effectiveness in Reproductive Health (SPCERH) to improve quality of care. The work embraces two main themes: understanding factors that influence clinical practice; and evaluating strategies to improve practice. Many factors influence practice, such as the nature of targeted behaviours, professionals and organisations (Chapter 1). An observational study, of practice related to 42 audit recommendations in 16 gynaecology units, found that attributes of recommendations independently modified the effects of a nati

New health technologies offer both challenges and opportunities. Regulation is one mechanism to help balance the benefits and risks of new health technologies. This thesis examines the extent to which ‘good’ health technology regulation is achieved and the effectiveness of the policy measures regulators (and others) employ to meet such aims. To accomplish these objectives, a conceptual framework of ‘good regulation’ based on the academic and practitioner literatures was developed and its various dimensions considered and explored across eight different studies. Mental health service user involvement had been UK government policy since the early 1990s. This dissertation explored the current state of policy and practice in mental health service user involvement by reviewing peer reviewed literature. A number of potential indicators of effective involvement were drawn from the literature. A discrepancy was found between policy and practice and the concept of indicators of effective involvement was proposed to support the process of enabling practice to develop to match policy expectations. Hydrogen fuel cells, and notably the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), present an important opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within a range of sectors of society, particularly for transportation and portable products. Despite several decades of research and development, there exist three main hurdles to full commercialisation; namely infrastructure, costs, and durability. This thesis considers the latter of these. The lifetime target for an automotive fuel cell power plant is to survive 5000 hours of usage before significant performance loss; current demonstration projects ha

HLB is the most devastating citrus disease in the US, causing 70% produce losses yearly. It is caused by the phloem-limited bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), which is transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP, Diaphorina citri). Using a comparative analysis between HLB-sensitive citrus cultivars and HLB-tolerant plants, we identified a novel class of stable antimicrobial peptides (SAMPs) that can rapidly kill CLas directly and induce plant natural immunity. SAMP application not only inhibits HLB symptoms and reduces the CLas titer in the HLB-positive citrus trees, but also
