Unobserved heterogeneity is one of the main concerns for applied economists, this is particularly so when modelling health and health related behaviours. This thesis illustrates four studies on modelling unobserved heterogeneity using some recent developments in latent class analysis. Chapter 2 examines two sources of individual unobserved heterogeneity when subjective indicators are used to measure health status: variations in unobservable true health and differences in self-reporting behaviour for a given level of “true health”. Heterogeneity is a ubiquitous finding in human tissues. Indeed, the cellular heterogeneity of a tumor may be viewed as a caricature of normal tissue that defines the tissue of tumor origin and prognosis. Abstract:
Abstract Natriuretic peptides have emerged as important candidates for the development of diagnostic tools in cardiovascular disease. Their increased concentrations have been found to be useful for ruling out disease of cardiac origin, as prognostic indicators, and in the follow-up of patients with heart failure. In order for natriuretic peptides to be efficient biomarkers, analytical problems in assay specificity and calibration need to be resolved. The aim of the present study was to elucidate circulating molecular components of N-terminal fragments of A- and B-type natriuretic peptides (NT-

Abstract:
Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) accumulation is a hallmark of atherosclerosis and vascular injury. However, fundamental aspects of proliferation and the phenotypic changes within individual VSMCs, which underlie vascular disease remain unresolved. In particular, it is not known if all VSMCs proliferate and display plasticity, or whether individual cells can switch to multiple phenotypes. To assess whether proliferation and plasticity in disease is a general characteristic of VSMCs or a feature of a subset of cells, multi-colour lineage labelling is used to demonstrate that VSMCs in injury-i

Abstract:

Abstract:
In cardiovascular disease the definition and the detection of the ECG parameters related to repolarization dynamics in post MI patients is still a crucial unmet need. In addition, the use of a 3D sensor in the implantable medical devices would be a crucial mean in the assessment or prediction of Heart Failure status, but the inclusion of such feature is limited by hardware and firmware constraints. The aim of this thesis is the definition of a reliable surrogate of the 500 Hz ECG signal to reach the aforementioned objective. To evaluate the worsening of reliability due to sampling frequency

Abstract:
This thesis examines the development and validation of Canadian Land Surface Scheme (CLASS) for various wetland landscapes individually, along with an evaluation of modelled results over a heterogeneous surface with airborne observations. A further statistical analysis of the effects of land surface classification procedures over the study area and their influence on modelled results is performed. CLASS is tested over individual wetland types: bog, fen and marsh in a stand-alone (non-GCM coupled) mode. Atmospheric conditions are provided for the eight site locations from tower measured data, w

Abstract:
Numerical experiments assuming land-use distributions of different heterogeneity of wet and dry surfaces were performed on a cloudy day in spring with a calm wind to examine their influences on the domain-averaged fluxes as well as on the distribution of the fluxes within the domain. The results substantiate that, for ]arge heterogeneity, i.e., small patches, the distribution of the patches plays no role in the magnitude of the atmospheric fluxes. For !arger patches, however, the domain-averaged latent heat-fluxes depend appreciably on both the heterogeneity as well as on the fractional covera
