AbstractLike many other fields in the UAE, cancer research showed a significant achievement. Measuring research outcomes is considered a crucial and critical step in evaluating the research impact. In this chapter, we analyzed various indicators that measure the number and impact of cancer research performed within the UAE in the last decades using the PubMed search engine and the Scopus database. Our results showed an exponential increment in cancer-related publications, from only 66 in 2011 to 865 in 2021. The increment in the number of publications was also associated with an improvement in the quality of cancer-related manuscripts, and this is presented as publication in more diverse and high-ranking journals, including PLOS One, Scientific Reports, Molecules, Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, and Lancet. While United Arab Emirates University, the University of Sharjah, and Tawam Hospital were shown to be the top UAE-affiliated institutions, the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Medical Research Council (MRC), and the US Department of Health and Human Services represent the top international funding bodies and collaborators. In conclusion, our analysis revealed an exponential increase in cancer research productivity, which is also coupled with improvements in the quality and impact of those research activities. This was achieved through investment in research infrastructure, recruitment of experienced researchers, and the establishment of various training programs.

Abstract:
Abstract Birthweight has been extensively used to construct perinatal indicators for identifying and monitoring newborns at risk. These indicators include measures such as low birthweight (<2500 grams irrespective of gestational age) and being small for gestational age (e.g., birthweight below the tenth percentile for a given gestational age). Determinants of adverse health at birth encompass biological and behavioral factors, often exhibiting a social pattern, with the highest prevalence observed in families of low socioeconomic status. Given the strong link between health and social outcomes throughout the life course, perinatal health is considered a vital dimension for examining how inequalities are (re)produced in society. Although immigrants are categorized as a socially vulnerable group experiencing multiple disadvantages, such as racism and discrimination, international evidence indicates that the offspring of foreign-born (immigrant) mothers often experience similar or even better perinatal health outcomes than their counterparts in the receiving country, which supports the healthy immigrant paradox. In this chapter, we conduct a narrative synthesis of the literature based on a systematic search using two electronic databases (PubMed and Web of Sciences) to identify quantitative studies published in peer-reviewed journals before March 2023. These studies were written in English or Spanish and include the birthweight outcomes of the offspring of immigrant women residing in Spain, with comparison groups consisting of the offspring of Spanish-born women. Using the vote-counting method, we assessed 28 studies that met our inclusion criteria. The findings of our review generally confirm the perinatal health advantage of small children among the offspring of most immigrant-origin mothers in Spain, except for those of African and Asian descent, compared with children of Spanish-born women. However, mothers from most immigrant origins exhibited higher risks than Spanish-born ones of delivering children with macrosomia (high birthweight), which challenges the interpretation of immigrants’ health advantage.

AbstractMoving from a first draft of the complete manuscript to a published article requires ongoing collaboration with your co-authors and with journal editors. Clear, efficient, and professional communication helps advance your manuscript. Authors who respect the time of their co-authors and so request comments within a professional turnaround time, carefully consider the comments that they have received, and take multiple steps to minimize the time demands on busy co-authors are much more likely to develop productive collegial relationships that help to advance their work. Sending blank forms for co-authors to complete, not providing co-authors a copy of the submitted manuscript, not keeping co-authors informed of discussion with journal editors, and sending draft manuscripts with figures that are not compressed demonstrate a lack of courtesy for your collaborators’ time. Choosing a journal that is appropriate for your manuscript, following the journal’s details of style, including respecting the journal word limit, and using an appropriate reporting guideline, all facilitate moving from a draft manuscript to a published article.
