This study examines whether Jamaica's free public healthcare policy affectedhealth status and labor supply of adult individuals. It compares outcomes of adults without health insurance versus their insured counterparts, before and after policy implementation. The study finds that the policy reduced both the likelihood of suffering illnesses with associated lost work days and the number of lost days due to illnesses by 28.6 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Consistent with the absence of "employment lock", no effects are found on employment at the extensive margin. However, consistent with

Barbados is a small, open island economy with one of the highest trade/GDP ratios in the Western Hemisphere. Because trade plays such a dominant role in the Barbadian economy, it also substantially determines the country¿s development prospects. Exports are particularly important in this respect: export income is needed to create and sustain jobs, to finance imports, to pay off foreign debt, and to maintain a healthy balance in the country¿s external accounts, all of which is necessary to achieve sustainable levels of economic growth. Successful international insertion, through trade facilitat

Trade can be a powerful engine of growth. In today¿s global economy, where investment moves quickly across borders and continents, and trade barriers are rapidly coming down, a competitive exporter has much to gain. In an ever-more liberalized world economy, however, competition is also that much harsher, and only the best will capture the benefits of new markets and business opportunities. Particularly in small, open economies like that of Trinidad and Tobago, weak export performance can impair a country¿s development prospects. The climate emergency is a health emergency. The British Medical Journal (2021) indicated that “if healthcare was a single country, it would be the world’s fifth largest emitter, accounting for 4.6% of greenhouse gas emissions”. This is resonant in the UK, where the National Health Service (NHS) is a cornerstone of society, deeply connected to the lives and wellbeing of its people. Abstract:
Business failure is a natural part of the development lifecycle. In a healthy economy, the formations and dissolutions of small firms drive innovation through the process of creative destruction. However, an excessive level of involuntary closures lowers both economic mobility and community social capital. We partnered with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Office (NCSOS) to identify factors that might be driving involuntary firm closures using administrative data. This analysis outlines our recommendation to use an exploratory open-ended survey instrument which targets dissolved firm ow
