Abstract:
Every person can do something to help contribute to healthy living, it just takes a little effort but the rewards are great. The interest to the health and the healthy way of life is natural. The origins of health care lie in the people’s culture. Like the folk song didn’t lose its meaning for the modern musical culture, the original folk active games, entertainments, dancing and bathing also took a certain place in the physical education system.

Abstract:
This overview was made to discuss coping with families who have lost a child/sibling, specifically children in preschool and elementary school. This subject can be daunting and difficult to navigate for parents however, understanding the importance of communication, involvement, and proper coping techniques is vital to the child’s development and perception of death. This educational poster discusses ways to tackle the issues that come when losing a child and give parents further insight into young minds dealing with tragedy. We look at Family Stress Theory to further explain assumptions about families, how families manage conflict and stress, stressors family systems undergo, and other related concepts.

Abstract:
The importance of the way of life in strengthening health and expanding the functional reserves of student youth. Analysis of scientific and methodological literature has shown that the way of life is a key factor in the direction of strengthening health and expanding the functional capabilities of students in particular and the person as a whole. The positive impact of the way of life on human health is assessed in different ways. The specific weight of the corresponding factor in the total sum of factors that have a positive effect ranges from 50 to 80%. At the same time, in our opinion, this distribution in terms of the level of influence of health factors in our country and other countries of the world is rather conditional. The key criteria can be: the standard of living, the level of citizens' safety, the state of health, natural and climatic conditions, etc. There is also no common opinion in understanding the term "healthy lifestyle" and its key components. Understanding by students of our country the importance of a way of life as the main component of health is at a low level, as evidenced by a large number of studies.
Znaczenie sposobu życia w celu wzmocnienia zdrowia i rozszerzenia rezerw funkcjonalnych młodzieży studenckiej.

Minns, Michael David. "National Health Service (N.H.S.) mediation in focus : a psychoanalytic lens on the unconscious at work : how does conflict find its way into organisational life?" Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/25894.

Full text
Abstract:
Workplace mediation services are committed to developing strategies that help people resolve conflict. In its various intrapsychic and psychosocial guises conflict is central to psychoanalytic theory and practice, but within the current literature there are no qualitative workplace mediation studies explicitly drawing on psychoanalytic/systems psychodynamic theory and thinking. In this way, the dynamic unconscious is effectively marginalised from the mediation research literature. This research adopts a case study approach, and reports the findings of a mixed methods mediation service review undertaken in an N.H.S. Trust. All research participants experienced significant conflict in the workplace, or were directly involved in addressing the antecedents, management and/or consequences associated with collegial and organisational dispute. 27 current N.H.S employees, selected by the mediation service lead, were invited to participate, with 15 proceeding to interview. All 15 participants contribute towards the service review data, whilst 6 of these interviews are used to specifically underpin psychoanalytic/systems psychodynamic analysis. The study methodology incorporates analytically informed negative capability and the Free Association Narrative Interviewing (F.A.N.I.) and analysis methods of Holloway & Jefferson (2012). An emphasis is placed working with the whole data according to the principles of gestalt, including the inter-subjective dynamics of the interview encounter itself, and analytical concepts such as counter-transference, splitting and projective identification. Many of the skills needed to work successfully as a psychoanalytic mediator are illustrated. The study also presents a summative content analysis of Trust board minutes Dec.2012 - Dec. 2015 to establish the representation of organisational conflict and mediation at the most senior levels of the organisation. A discrepancy between the reported prevalence of organisational conflict and its representation at board level is evident. The study links the service review findings to recommendations for the N.H.S. Trust at the level of policy and practice, alongside suggestions for further research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis, “Lacan and the American Way of Life”, examines Jacques Lacan and the United States in order to understand why Lacan’s teachings have had difficulty being taken seriously in American clinical practice. If psychoanalysts in the United States have kept Lacanian theory at a distance, it is perhaps because of the ways American practice has been oriented. We isolate three orientations: ego psychology, which had a strong influence in the United States as early as the 1930’s; Wilhelm Reich, the Viennese psychoanalyst and brilliant student of Freud who emigrated to the US and became known for his Sexual Revolution; and gender studies which considers that psychoanalysis, being overly subjected to patriarchal signifiers, should be abandoned. These movements represent three modalities of sexual theory that have left their mark on America, each bringing a meaning to sexuality in a way that excludes Lacan’s work. We examine these movements from a Lacanian point of view starting with his response to ego psychology (his return to Freud) and continuing with his later teachings (after 1970) that founded a practice oriented by the real – a re-thinking of psychoanalysis. The Lacanian concept of the real will be the compass that guides us through this demonstration. We will see that Lacan’s works, and especially his later formulations as explained by Jacques-Alain Miller, provide a way out of the impasses of ego psychology and its ego cult, of Reich and his genital phallic jouissance, and of gender studies and their entanglement with identity

The general objective was the conditions, the way of life and the health of the people who use the Mastology Program of Hospital das Clínicas (HC) beneficiaries of the Continuous Benefit Benefit (BPC). Nine women participated in the event in the United States of Goiânia and Aparecida de Goiânia, with 15 between 35 and 65 years. The construction of the information was carried out through a series of documentary analyzes and collected at home, based on a constructed road map. As the surveys were constructed in a qualitative way, allowing the construction of a sociodemographic profile of women, including the same, but, above all, better access to social goods, and thus, a better quality of life. Through the study, it has strong indicators that BPC, no sense of being human, can improve the lives of women, yet keeps a woman in the same poverty condition. In the face of the results, it is concluded that it is better to have a link between social policies, so that women who benefit from income transfer programs can benefit from a labor market, with life and improvement in health care.

Abstract:
The World Health Organisation has developed a concept of ecological health- a notion that health, using a broad definition, is a product of the societies and environments in which we live. It is the aim of the WHO to achieve "Health for All by the Year 2000." This reform agenda incorporates education as a tool for social change. This study investigates the role of education in social change, with local and global health as an objective. The background to the development of this concept is outlined, as are the social issues that make this such an important perspective. Theories of social formation and the role of the school in relation to society are discussed, and the research that confirms that schools do "make a difference" reported. Definitions of change, factors affecting social change and models of change are described. Factors relating specifically to educational change are outlined and related to examples of educational change, designed to promote social change, in Australia. Case studies, composed of descriptions of schools written by staff members to illustrate the process of working towards becoming "Healthy School Communities" and transcripts of interviews, are analysed to determine the extent and type of change that is taking place within each school, and how the changes are happening. Schools reported changes to attitude, understanding, policies and practice. The analysis is then discussed, and the conclusion reached that this construct of education has some useful conceptual frameworks, for the cultural changes that are occurring in Australia and other Western cultures.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to offer a critique of Nietzsche's project for the revaluation of values interpreted as a philosophy for a way of living aimed at achieving 'great health'. I argue that, in this respect, it is illuminating and aids the interpretation of Nietzsche's views on sickness and the achievement of health to compare his philosophy with that of the Pyrrhonian Sceptics whom I argue share similar philosophical objectives. This thesis also critiques and builds on Jessica Berry's comparative study of Nietzsche and the Pyrrhonian sceptics regarding health in which she argues for a similarity between the Pyrrhonian sceptic's notion of health and Nietzsche's great health. I highlight difficulties in her arguments. Instead I offer my own comparative study on health which highlights alternative similarities between Nietzsche and the Pyrrhonian sceptics, principally their rejection of orthodox philosophical principles in favour of a new way of doing philosophy. I argue that both philosophies identify a psychological sickness which they associate with adherence to conventional values - the cure for which is achieved through a comparable methodology, specifically involving the attack on dogmatism and the adoption of scepticism, doubt and suspension. I also show that both consider that philosophical deliberation should be directed towards the Socratic question 'how should I live a good life?'

Healthy Pancakes is a healthy, nutritious and fast prepared food product. On s'y sent moins étranger.
Modernity is not always easy to live. What thé individual bas gained in Hberty, he has lost in « ontological security » (Giddens). To exist legitimately in society, thé individual needs « supports » (Martuccelli). For surfers, il will be thé Wave. Generally speaking, if some individuals always trust institutionnal frameworks, others prefer more unofficial means which deal with intimacy. Personal plots are often built today on a background of sports and leisures, where thé « status-self » is put aside. The individual has now to invent his destiny, to write his own life-story. The world loses its strangeness. One feels less solitary. The original split is less obvious, because our individualistic societies develop a complex towards holistic societies. And whenever thé individual projects his fantasies born from a Golden Age past, he might get prône to some melancholy

Abstract:

My dissertation is a critical philosophical interpretation of selected constructs of Haudenosaunee culture addressing barriers to liberation from colonialism; the decolonization of the disruption of the original humanistic constructs rooted within Onkwehónweneha; and what transformation means in the 21st century. I also explore the contemporary realities of Haudenosaunee life from the Seven Spans paradigm of standards established by the Kaianerekowa – The Great Law of Peace; Gaiwiio – the Teachings of Handsome Lake; Indigenous deconstructive methodology framed by cultural transformation; and the construct of "extending the rafters" as a critical analysis of the Haudenosaunee from within.

Haudenosaunee culture is growing and flourishing, and in recent years, the young people who are driven by identity are seeking more understanding from life and culture. They are often met with resistance by self-appointed doorkeepers of the culture who are protectionist, and, in their attempts to protect, they discourage people. Their family's lack of activity in the longhouse community is often cited as reasonable cause. This is contrary to the original birthright of every Haudenosaunee person with respect to their culture. To challenge this issue, I advocate for more written cultural knowledge to be produced by Indigenous scholars as one critical step to cultural inclusion.

How we think, why we dream, how we solve problems, and what is important to a Haudenosaunee person are accumulating notions of cultural knowledge being forgotten as the Elders, the wisdom-keepers of repository knowledge, make their journey back to the Skyworld. It is vital that we explore these ideas in a process of decolonizing and experiential cultural learning connected to the important stories of the culture. This is an attempt at focusing that challenge with cause for dialogue.

Abstract:
In the following nine linked stories, characters from disparate backgrounds and socio-economic strata converge in a rural community along the Missouri river in central Montana. A Texas-based oil exploration and production company takes up residence in the area, causing a stir in the neighborhood. Long-time local residents experience their daily lives amid a tourist driven economy and reaffirm their aspirations to leave despite significant obstacles and limitations. In "Show Me the Way to Go Home," a young waitress is stranded after a car accident and seeks help from residents living on the single row of houses in the area. In "Give Death Grace," a resident artist leaves to resolve her tumultuous past with her father. In "A Good Little Fisherwoman," a woman deals with the repercussions of her recent reproductive decisions during a fishing trip. In "Little Fires," a local man deals with the tragic burn injury of a child while also facing deeply rooted resentments with his mother. In "Dwelling," an aging local must decide whether or not she will sell her home to two strangers. In "Other Important Areas of Functioning," a woman decides to discontinue her mood stabilizing medications in favor of a more natural lifestyle. While this place means something different to each of these characters, they all coexist while facing individual challenges.

Belcastro, Elizabeth Lynn. "Life Cycle Analysis of a Ceramic Three-Way Catalytic Converter." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32342.

Full text
Abstract:
The life cycle analysis compares the environmental impacts of catalytic converters and the effects of not using these devices. To environmentally evaluate the catalytic converter, the emissions during extraction, processing, use of the product are considered. All relevant materials and energy supplies are evaluated for the catalytic converter. The goal of this life cycle is to compare the pollutants of a car with and without a catalytic converter. Pollutants examined are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The main finding is that even considering materials and processing, a catalytic converter decreases the CO, HC and NOx pollutant emissions. The CO2 emissions are increased with a catalytic converter, but this increase is small relative to the overall CO2 emissions. The majority of catalytic converter pollutants are caused by the use phase, not extraction or processing. The life cycle analysis indicates that a catalytic converter decreases damage to human health by almost half, and the ecosystem quality damage is decreased by more than half. There is no damage to resources without a converter, as there are no materials or energy required; the damages with a converter are so small that they are not a significant factor. Overall, catalytic converters can be seen as worthwhile environmental products when considering short term effects like human health effects of smog, which are their design intent. If broader environmental perspectives that include climate change are considered, then the benefits depend on the weighting of these different environmental impacts.
Master of Science

Abstract:
As the face of aging in our society changes, there is an increasing need for healthy interventions for the elderly. Spirituality and religion are powerful cultural influences for many African Americans and are used as resources to overcome personal, physical and health crises. Churches and other faith-based organizations have become increasingly popular settings to conduct health promotion and research studies, particularly in the African American community. The proposed study is to contextualize the spiritual life and eating behaviors of older adults (63 years and older) using the H.E.A.L. Congregation study. This survey was developed by the research team and utilized a mixed methods approach to assess the role of the church on their health and well-being and administered via Qualtrics to over 300 African Americans across the US. Preliminary analyses identified nearly 75% of participants recognized the church having a role in their spiritual and physical growth.

The Disney International College Program (ICP) is an internship program sponsored by The Walt Disney Company, in which foreign university and college students travel to the United States, to spend their summer vocation working on the Walt Disney World Resort on Florida. The ICP has become very popular among Brazilian university students. Every year, almost thirty thousands of them apply for this program, though only about eight hundred manage to become a cast member. While on the program these youngsters develop a Disney Identity that is joined to their self. This research's goal is to explore the ICP role on the participants` life, showing its effects on these youngsters self-construction. In addition, we have aimed to investigate how ICP Alumni (people who took part of the ICP) manage to sustain their Disney identity, even after leaving the program. In order to meet our goal we have developed a qualitative case study, in which the case studied was the ICP alumni identity. Moreover, through our literature review we have acknowledged that someone’s self lays in the capacity to keep a particular narrative going on. Hence, our data was collected and analyzed through a narrative inquire method. Athwart our study, we have found out that the Walt Disney Company does an efficient job in convincing these youngsters that their mission and values are very important and thus, the ICP alumni become to praise the Disney Company and brand. We have also observed the existence of an actual Disney alumni community bonded by principles, ideas and consumption.

Abstract:

Humans are currently living in a way that profoundly affects the planet, and the lives of future generations. Our value system promotes economic gain over environmental health. We are taking more than we are giving back, stretching beyond the limits of sustainability. Earth cannot sustain the current human lifestyle under these conditions. This is paired with the fact that the current system of education focuses on producing economically productive individuals instead of environmentally and socially aware persons who carefully consider the impacts of their actions. This study examines the capacity for “ecological living” to use outdoor education as a tool for changing the present human way of life. Thirty three ecological farms responded to a questionnaire examining the importance each placed on current vs. alternative values. The respondents also answered questions displaying the relationship between life on their farms and the key components of outdoor education. Results show a positive opportunity exists for using ecological farms and the ecological lifestyle to promote a change in way of life. The results also exhibit a high level of connection between the ideals of outdoor education and the activities that are part of life on an ecological farm. This suggests that by specifically tailoring ecological farms to be educational institutions, a further change in way of life could be expanded. The ecological lifestyle shows potential to educate people in greater awareness of others and the environment, thereby decreasing the human impact on earth and creating an opportunity for future generations.

Abstract:
Life is a One-Way Ticket is a twenty-three minute documentary about jazz photographer Herman Leonard's 80th birthday party. The event took place at Rosy's Jazz Hall, a club in the uptown section of New Orleans where musicians including Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Stevie Wonder once performed. Within the documentary, I show the celebration as an analogy for the life of Herman Leonard. In short but moving passages, Herman Leonard reflects upon the nature of his longevity, the world today, and the "luck" he has had with photography. In addition to the voice of Herman Leonard, interviews with Herman Leonard's friends and family show him as both a world-class photographer and the down-toearth human being. Upon completion of the documentary, the final cut will be authored onto a DVD. This will allow for extra features, including an extended interview with Herman Leonard.

Leung, King-Ho. "Being, living, thinking : metaphysics and philosophy as a way of life." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/52574/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between metaphysical theorisation and the practice of philosophy as a way of life. The thesis begins by highlighting the parallels between the Cartesian shift away from the premodern practice of philosophy as a way of life (what Foucault terms ‘the Cartesian moment’) and the ontological suspension of ‘life’ in Descartes’ influential re-conception of the soul as the principle of thinking instead of life and in his mechanistic understanding of living beings as automata. After this, it examines the works of Martin Heidegger, Heidegger’s former students Hannah Arendt and Giorgio Agamben, as well as Gilles Deleuze (and via Deleuze, Henri Bergson) and considers how the metaphysical theoretical conception of ‘being’, ‘living’ and ‘thinking’ informs and affects the practice of philosophy. The thesis concludes with a re-reading of Augustine’s philosophy of life in light of these contemporary philosophical developments. By underscoring the connections between Augustine’s metaphysical conception of God as ‘Life itself’ and his philosophical practice of introspection as notably found in his Confessions—one of the most important texts of Western metaphysics and spiritual practice, this thesis argues that metaphysical theorisation is in fact not incompatible with the premodern practice of philosophy as a way of life or spiritual exercise (as suggested by Foucault and to some extent Heidegger). Instead, Augustine’s Christian appropriation of the Platonic metaphysics of participation in light of his philosophical interpretation of the Christian doctrine of the incarnation not only shows us how speculative metaphysics can provide a powerful theoretical incentive to lead a philosophical life, but also how a ‘religious’ approach to philosophising can help recover the understanding of philosophy as way of life and furthermore reconcile the supposed division between metaphysical theorisation and the practice of philosophy as a way of living.

Abstract:
At present, only one in teree Peruvians over 15 years of age performs some type of physical activity, this situation is alarming. It should be noted that those who suffer from the aforementioned diseases are at risk by contracting covid-19. To the aforementioned, it is added that the constant exhalations due to effort during physical activity cause a more favorable environment for coronavirus infections within gyms. That is why the Peruvian Government was forced to close the gyms. However, in Peru, according to the latest IHRSA report (2019), there are 1,818 gyms and training centers, which are currently closed, affecting around 20,000 sports professionals. Based on this, “HEALTHY MIND” was born, a business idea from a group of students from the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences. This team analyzed the current situation and developed a service so that people can change their lifestyle from home and have no excuses for doing any physical activity.

Background: Health is an important concept that there are many different definitions of. There are definitions of Health believes that health is about feeling good and having a good ability to act. The concept highlights the importance of that every individual should have the opportunity to do what she values as important. People which are mentally retarded have limits they can no do what they want and live their lives in the same way as normal gifted can. These limitations are physical, mental and social. People which are mentally retarded are aging faster than normal gifted people. It is relevant to work to promote residents' health and work for a healthy aging to happen. Literature Review: Literature in the fields of mentally retarded, health and aging show that there is a need to work to promote healthy aging of the mentally retarded and therefore we find it interesting to work with this subject. Aim: To find out how a healthy life can be promoted with disabilities according to staff attitudes towards the mentally handicapped. Method: The study is qualitative and individual interviews were carried out at eight people who work on housing for the mentally retarded. The interviews were recorded on tape and then transcribed. The material was treated confidential. Results: Staff in the housing for mentally retarded emphasize the importance of eating healthy and being physically active. They mean that a good social life increases the chance of a healthy aging and that cultural activities have good effect on health. They also see that they themselves have an important part in promoting healthy aging of the mentally retarded. Discussion: Mentally retarded living in housing for the mentally retarded is dependent on the staff working there. Therefore the staff has an extremely important role in encouraging the residents' healths and works towards healthy aging. This they can do in a variety of ways both in terms of physical, mental and social health.

Abstract:
Introduction All human beings require qualitatively and quantitatively good sleep, quality of sleep in terms of sound sleep and quantity in terms of sufficient duration. However, both quality and quantity of sleep in individual cases may be sub-optimal due to several factors related to physical health, mental health and sociological aspects. Several studies have been conducted to examine the effect of these factors on sleep quality and quantity. One of the less studied and important aspects is the effect of depression on temporal sleep quality and quantity. The relationship between sleep and depression is complex and maybe bi-directional. Sleep disturbances resulting from depression or vice versa can impact on the quality of life. A recognition of this importance prompted this research. As the first step towards assessment of this research, the methodology and the variables to be included, a review of available literature on various aspects of sleep quality and quantity was undertaken. The review provided an overview of most aspects of sleep and ranged from the medical definition of sleep, components of quality and quantity, measurement methods and factors affecting sleep. The methods and results of many studies were synthesised to obtain a cohesive picture. In the review process, depression was one of the factors that was considered along with other factors. Studies comparing sleep and quality of life characteristics between healthy and depressed groups were scarce. To study the differences in the sleep and quality of life characteristics between healthy and depressed groups was identified as the research gap to be addressed. It is well-recognised that healthy and depressed individuals differ in their mood state and other psychological health factors. The mood state can impact sleep parameters in different ways. Life quality is directly influenced by physical and psychosocial aspects of life and may contain as many as eight dimensions. It is clear that any one or more of the components of life quality is affected in more than one way if sleep is disturbed, especially, in depressed individuals. This is a matter worth detailed study and was included in this research. Therefore, this thesis explored qualitative and quantitative variables of sleep and life quality using scientifically validated methods. The thesis examined the following research questions: What are the differences between the temporal sleep patterns of healthy and depressed groups? (Chapter 4); What are the differences in the periodicity of sleep duration between healthy and depressed groups? (Chapter 5); and how does the relationship between quality of life and sleep compare between healthy and depressed groups? (Chapter 6). In chapter 7, the use of EEG spectral power to differentiate healthy and depressed groups more effectively has been examined. What are the elements of light therapy that contribute to successful treatment of depression? Although this question was raised, the study did not proceed as a similar clinical trial had already begun within the University. The completed comprehensive review of literature on all aspects of light therapy is published and presented in Chapter 9. Methods The research utilised a quantitative methodology to compare the differences between the sleep and quality of life characteristics of healthy and depressed groups. Objective sleep parameters were measured using the Actiwatch 2 (AW2) and sleep EEG. The subjective quality of sleep was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The 8-dimensional Assessment of Quality of Life instrument (AQoL-8D) was applied to assess life quality on a group of 20 healthy and 20 depressed individuals. A Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS)-16 and Depressive Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-D, DASS-S and DASS-S) were also administered to participants. The sleep and quality of life data were collected over a period of 4 weeks. Summary statistics and multivariate analysis were conducted. Significance of differences in the mean scores of variables between healthy and depressed groups were tested using t-tests. Multiple linear regression analyses to identify predictors of sleep, and the Cosinor analysis to measure sleep cycle periodicities were performed. Cluster analysis was done to group the temporal characteristics of sleep variables into healthy and depressed groups. A discrete time-frequency distribution definition method was used to calculate the average power spectra for the right and left brain hemispheres using MATLAB R2009 and its wavelet toolbox (MathWorks Inc., Natick, MA). The right-left asymmetry was calculated as the difference in the voltage between the Right and Left sides for each frequency band. All data were used to compare the EEG power for the different frequency bands between healthy participants and those with depression. Results and Conclusions Differences between the temporal sleep patterns of healthy and depressed groups were identified in Chapter 4. The depressed group had significantly higher levels of depression, stress and anxiety. Their level of physical activity was at a considerably lower level. Moreover, depressed people slept more (longer total sleep time) compared to healthy people. Association of both lower and higher sleep duration with depression are noted according to the American Psychiatric Association's 2013 update to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) suggesting that future research should aim to explore the differences in physical and psychological characteristics of short versus long sleepers who have depression. Delayed sleep onset was significantly correlated with anxiety and depression in the depressed group. Delayed sleep onset was also significantly correlated with activity levels of the depressed group. The positive association between activity level and SOL was anomalous, and did not reflect the expected pattern seen in healthy individuals. Cluster analysis revealed the potential of using the sleep variables of total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency (SE), sleep onset latency (SOL) and wake after sleep onset (WASO) as predictors of depression when the sample size is large. The differences between the periodicity of sleep duration between healthy and depressed groups were reported in Chapter 5. The Cosinor analysis highlighted that the variability in sleep duration between nights was in the form of a cosine wave over time. The sleep parameters were more variable in the depressed group compared to the healthy group. High stress as measured by the depression, stress and anxiety scores (DASS) was associated with irregular total sleep time incurred by healthy individuals, whereas higher stress was noted among depressed individuals with the number of nights/days farther away from the longest night/day sleep (i.e. higher acrophase). Thus, healthy and depressed groups were differentiated by the effect of stress on total sleep time in the healthy group and how many nights/days away from their sleep peaks in the depressed group. The associations between quality of life and sleep in both the healthy and depressed groups were examined in Chapter 6. There were significant differences between depressed and healthy participants in the DASS scores, depressive symptoms (QIDS), sleep quality (PSQI), and all dimensions of AQoL-8D. The correlations between PSQI and the dimensions of AQoL-8D namely, independent living, happiness, self-worth, and quality of sleep were stronger in depressed people compared to healthy people with the exclusion of the association between PSQI and dimensions of mental health, relationships, pain, functioning of senses and coping and PSQI, which was similar or weaker in the depressed groups. Regression analysis of subjective sleep quality (PSQI) found mental health to be the only significant predictor of quality of sleep in healthy people, and happiness to be the only significant predictor of quality of sleep in depressed people. For objective sleep data, however, no quality of life dimensions were significant predictors of TST in both groups. Self-worth predicted three sleep variables: SE, SOL and WASO for the healthy group. Coping predicted SOL in the depressed group. The results of EEG studies described in chapter 7 failed to show any difference between depressed and healthy group, except for the delta frequency band which distinguished the groups. The systematic review, Chapter 9, examined the properties of light therapy: light specification, dose, timing and delivery that contribute to the effectiveness of light exposure based on the mood scores in major depressive disorder. The findings indicated that exposure duration between 30 min to 2 h per day, intensity range between 176 to 10,000 lux, in any of blue, green or white light colour and exposure during morning or evening mostly translated to a positive change in mood effects in people with major depressive disorders. Additionally, it was found that factors such as anti-depressant medication use, depression episodes and severity, natural light exposure and sleep deprivation may confound the effects of light therapy. Overall, it can be concluded from this research that, depression has a significant impact on both sleep and quality of life characteristics. This work has been successful in quantifying the association between depression, sleep and quality of life characteristics. The temporal characteristics of sleep variables may potentially be used to predict depression. This insight may be used to predict early onset of depression, which may be translated to better quality of life outcomes with early interventions, although more research is needed in the future.

Abstract:
Purpose: Despite a growing literature on the benefits of gratitude for adjustment to chronic illness, little is known about gratitude in medical populations compared to healthy populations, or the degree to which potential deficits in gratitude might impact quality of life. The purpose of the present study was to (1) examine levels of gratitude and quality of life in fibromyalgia patients and healthy controls and (2) consider the role of gratitude in explaining quality of life differences between fibromyalgia patients and healthy controls. Methods: Participants were 173 fibromyalgia patients and 81 healthy controls. All participants completed measures of gratitude, quality of life, and socio-demographics. Results: Although gratitude was positively associated with quality of life, levels of gratitude and quality of life were lower in the fibromyalgia sample relative to the healthy controls. This difference in gratitude partially mediated differences in quality of life between the two groups after controlling for socio-demographic variables. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that gratitude is a valuable positive psychological trait for quality of life in people with fibromyalgia. Interventions to improve gratitude in this patient population may also bring enhancement in quality of life.

Abstract:
Book Summary: In addition to providing foundational information about ethical codes and legal statues, this new text advocates for counseling personnel to view ethical issues as challenges for personal and professional growth. Written in an accessible, concise and easy to read style, this book endeavors to broaden the traditional focus of ethical study to include topics that students and practicing clinicians will find consistent with their own personal striving and professional needs. While covering the traditional core percepts of professional ethics in considerable detail: confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries and the use of power, and competency and professional responsibility, it also advocates for counseling personnel to view ethical issues as challenges for personal and professional growth. And, it includes a number of critical topics that counselors and therapists face or will face in daily practice. These include organizational ethics, virtue ethics, and an expanded view of multicultural ethics with a focus on community values as well as on religious and spiritual issues. This new book includes a special chapter in the appendix that emphasizes ways in which counselors and therapists can grow and achieve excellence in their personal and professional lives. Unique and essential coverage of organizational ethics (OE) is addressed making readers aware of how organizational dynamics can exert such powerful influence on ethical decision making (Ch 4 & 10-14). Unique coverage of the ethical considerations involving spiritual and religious issues as well as the use of alternative interventions in counseling and psychotherapy are covered, including the common lawsuits brought against counselors and therapists using spiritual and alternative interventions (Ch 3). A unique section in the appendix describes the psychological and philosophical basis of ethical decision-making for readers who want and need a more in-depth discussion.
