On the level of dramatic analysis, I look to understand how "sanctuary" spaces operate in Shakespeare's early plays and the ways in which such zones relate to genre. In tragedy, there is no escape valve, no place for retreat. The aesthetic depends on the increasing pressure and the gradual winnowing of options and possibilities. I analyze Richard III (both Thomas More's and Shakespeare's) as the preeminent example of sanctuary-breaking and generic claustrophobia. Abstract:
AbstractBy way of conclusion, this chapter examines the relationship between historical films and theories of historical culture. At the heart of its discussion is the thesis that appropriation of histospheres in spectators’ reception has a refigurative effect on our historical consciousness. On this view, the historical experiences generated by films augment the conceptions of history we have acquired from written accounts and sources with a physical-sensory dimension. Consequently, this chapter argues that two new forms of remembering make a substantial contribution to transforming our historical culture: The reminiscence triggers integrated in the audiovisual design of a historical film prompt spontaneous or “unbidden” memories that come to us contingently and are essentially receptive. The mise-en-histoire’s referentialization, by contrast, is a productive act of remembering.

For Charles Darwin, the hot summer of 1858 was the time of crisis, as it was, for different reasons, for his close contemporaries Charles Dickens and Benjamin Disraeli. Other Victorians of lasting fame, and some whose notoriety did not outlast the stifling summer heat, found themselves intricately involved in political, social, or cultural events of national importance during the short four-month period from May to August 1858. Several far-reaching acts of parliament were debated and passed: on the governance of India, Jewish representation in parliament, the medical profession, marriage and divorce, and — most visibly and nauseatingly — the ‘Great Stink’ for which 1858 is best known.

The history of the understanding of the heart shows how far scientific research has come. Experimentation resulted in the scientific discovery of congenital heart disease by Mason Sones, whose work led to the understanding of obstructive coronary artery disease, risk stratification for patients, and subsequently to a road map for revascularization procedures. Werner Forssmann is another significant name, having demonstrated the feasibility of placing catheters in the heart by passing a urethral catheter through his own brachial vein into his right atrium. Abstract:
This chapter addresses some of the later psychological dimensions inherent within adolescents' and adults' internalization of a poem. It sets Thomas Gray's “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” within a very specific institutional and emotional history, directing attention to the mingled pain and pleasure that can exist within the possession of a cultural object. This chapter considers how the highest-achieving elementary-school pupils might have felt when they read and recited a work that dubs the poor both unlettered and mute. Further, it speculates about the ability of the memorized poem to stay within those individuals for the remainder of their days, and to act as a constant reminder of the educational and social processes that moved them out of one class and into another—an elevation the eighteenth-century poem deems impossible.

This chapter covers the issues surrounding heart failure in patients with palliative needs, including definition of heart failure, Management of heart failure, end-of-life care, complex decision-making, and models of care. Chronic heart failure is a progressive, terminal syndrome and is the final common pathway of many cardiovascular diseases. There is difficulty in defining heart failure as there are many different criteria around the world used to define it. However, common criteria usually include history, physical examination, chest radiography, and echocardiography. The European Society of Cardiology defines heart failure as the presence of symptoms of heart failure at rest or during exercise, and objective evidence of cardiac dysfunction (usually on echocardiography).
