Abstract:
Designated as an emerging epidemic in 1997, heart failure (HF) remains a major clinical and public health problem. This review focuses on the most recent studies identified by searching the Medline database for publications with the subject headings HF, epidemiology, prevalence, incidence, trends between 2010 and present. Publications relevant to epidemiology and population sciences were retained for discussion in this review after reviewing abstracts for relevance to these topics. Studies of the epidemiology of HF over the past decade have improved our understanding of the HF syndrome and of

Heart failure (HF) and gout are common medical conditions that lead to significant morbidity and mortality in Canada and the US. We conducted a population-based nested case-control study to investigate the associations between gout, allopurinol use and HF outcomes using administrative data from the province of Quebec. Our analysis demonstrates that a history of gout is associated with increased HF readmission and death in HF patients (adjusted RR 1.63; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.48-1.80). We also show that chronic allopurinol use, a common medication for gout, is associated with reducti

Little is known on the epidemiology and prognosis of HF in Leicestershire, which includes a large proportion of South Asians. Hypotheses - The epidemiology of heart failure in Leicestershire is different to that of published national and international cohorts. South Asians have more severe coronary disease compared to Caucasians, and will have more severe HF and increased mortality. Simple clinical data on admission can be used to predict survival. Acute heart failure is defined as the rapid development or change of symptoms and signs of heart failure that requires urgent medical attention and usually hospitalization. Acute heart failure is the first reason for hospital admission in individuals aged 65 or more and accounts for nearly 70% of the total health care expenditure for heart failure. It is characterized by an adverse prognosis, with an in-hospital mortality rate of 4-7%, a 2-3-month post-discharge mortality of 7-11%, and a 2-3-month readmission rate of 25-30%. The majority of patients have a previous history of heart failure and

Uses of epidemiology. Venous thromboembolism continues to be an important cause of death and disability in Western Countries. Its epidemiology may provide clues to etiology, e.g. the increased incidence in oral contraceptive users, and the low prevalence at autopsy in Central Africa or Japan compared to the U.S.A. A second use is the monitoring of time-trends: the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism increased during the 1970s, although the case fatality decreased. A third use is the identification and quantification of risk factors: these could be modified in the hope of prevention, or else used t
