Abstract:
Access to London Heathrow Airport has played an integral role in the development of the UK– Russia air services agreement. The entry into force of the original agreement signed in 1957 was delayed by two years due to concerns regarding the noise created by Russian aircraft at Heathrow. Since then, Russia has sought amendments to the agreement to allow Aeroflot to increase its London-Moscow frequencies, in exchange for granting UK carriers permission to operate over Siberian airspace, which is crucial for flights from Heathrow to the Far East to operate efficiently. Russia has only been willing

Improving airport collaborative decision making is at the heart of airport operations centers (APOCs) recently established in several major European airports. In this paper, we describe a project commissioned by Eurocontrol, the organization in charge of the safety and seamless flow of European air traffic. The project’s goal was to examine the opportunities offered by the colocation and real-time data sharing in the APOC at London’s Heathrow airport, arguably the most advanced of its type in Europe. We developed and implemented a pilot study of a real-time data-sharing and collaborative decis

Some two years ago the Club of Mainz Executive Committee endorsed a proposal to investigate the rescue and medical facilities at a selection of the world's airports. A number of members of the Club agreed to take part in a survey of a sample of airports in their own regions and some of these reports will be presented in this article. Three airports were studied in the United Kingdom — London Heathrow and Stansted — both civilian airports, and one military airport, Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire.London Heathrow is one of the biggest international airports in the world, handling more airlines than

Over a two-year period, 24 patients were admitted from Heathrow airport to the catchment area psychiatric hospital, St. Bernard's, 19 under compulsion, after they had attracted attention whilst wandering aimlessly at Heathrow airport, as opposed to arriving or departing. Diagnostic and epidemiological data is presented, together with vignettes of three typical cases. Of these patients, 16 were suffering from schizophrenia and this overwhelming preponderance is considered, together with the fact that eight persons had previous admissions under similar circumstances.

This thesis examines the call for reform in the governance of risk and control within major construction programmes in the UK. Over the next 8 years, Construction 2025 describes aspirations for major improvements in productivity, cost efficiency and delivery lead times. However, the pathway to reform remains unclear. Major infrastructure projects have a history of dissonance where competing value systems can create friction. However, the productive friction from multiple evaluative perspectives can also be a fundamental part of resolving emergent and perplexing problems. Construction 2025 high

The research problem considered in this thesis was presented by NATS, who are responsible for the take-off runway scheduling at London Heathrow airport. The sequence in which aircraft take off is very important and can have a huge effect upon the throughput of the runway and the consequent delay for aircraft awaiting take-off. Sequence-dependent separations apply between aircraft at take-off, some aircraft have time-slots within which they must take-off and all re-sequencing performed by the runway controller has to take place within restrictive areas of the airport surface called holding area

Social media has created new protest spaces and has enabled people to do things differently. The focus of the research is on campaign groups, created before social media was used as a tool for protest. Social media data was obtained from three anti-airport expansion groups which included the extraction of approximately 9,000 tweets and 8,000 Facebook posts. The data were then ana

AbstractThis chapter describes the core aspects of the land-use planning (LUP) element of the Balanced Approach (BA) by acknowledging the potential of effective LUP as one of the few anticipatory tools available to manage noise. It explores the planning shortcomings that fail to stop encroachment and, thus, the need for remedial mitigation actions such as sound insulation, compensation and buy-out. It goes on to outline core future challenges and steps to develop a better spatial understanding of noise through improved understanding of people’s soundscapes (e.g. via the ANIMA app). To illustra
