Full textMy PhD project focused on functional study of the TAR1 gene. TAR1 is localized on the antisense strand of the 25S rDNA of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and encodes a polypeptide (Tar1p) of unknown function, which localized into mitochondria. First, I was interested to the TAR1 transcript to identify its 5' and 3' ends. Using a reporter system I set up, I studied the expression of TAR1 in various conditions. Then I have demonstrated that Tar1p is localized in the inner membrane of mitochondria with its amino-terminal end in the matrix and its carboxy-terminal end in the intermembrane space. The last 32 amino acids appear to be cleavable but this sequence is not essential for the protein import into mitochondria. I detected the endogenous Tar1p polypeptide in mitochondria of the yeast Kluyveromyces lactis but not of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Secondly, I tried to inactivate TAR1. However, due to the high copy number of this gene in the genome, it was not possible to use classical deletion approach. I developed two approaches to inactivate TAR1. The first one is based on the use of C/D snoRNAs. SnoRNAs were constructed to target the methylation of one nucleotide within the TAR1 mRNA. One may expect that this methylation will interfere with mRNA translation. The second one is to introduce stop codons within the open reading frame of TAR1 in a yeast strain containing a single plasmidic unit of rDNA. These stop codons are expected to stop translation, preventing the synthesis of Tar1p

Anyone leaning towards sleep quality; this statement is equally applicable to person hospitalized or in home-care center. In fact, it is essential to understand that biological and physiological aspects of sleep vary with age and health of the person. In situations where the need to sleep is disrupted, nurses must attempt to positively influence the satisfaction of this need and ensure that the positive effects of the sleep occurs for the person to promote his recovery and return to health. The goal of this pre-experimental study is to influence the choice of nursing interventions by focusing on better knowledge of the need for sleep and a wider choice of non-pharmacological nursing interventions following a training on sleep for a specific population: hospitalized seniors or in home-care centre. The purpose of this training is to provide optimal nursing interventions for seniors – both hospitalized or in a home-care center – by helping nurses to understand pharmacological interventions effects on elderly and by proposing them non-pharmacological nursing interventions. Two complementary frameworks guide this research: the Virginia Henderson’s conceptual framework and the "Approche adaptée à la personne âgée" framework proposed by the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and adopted by every health organizations. Based on a convenience sample of 59 nurses and 285 seniors, a measurement of knowledge, a measurement of potential means and a measurement of interventions were completed. The results showed that the nurses have improved their knowledge for non-pharmacological interventions, which was reflected by a decrease in medication use to promote sleep among hospitalized and home-care center seniors. Finally, nursing interventions in this research highlighted the impact of nursing care: following the training, positive effects were noticeable about the medication use as a way to promote sleep quality for elders hospitalized and in home-care center.

Full textRhetoric, in the modern sense of the word (following the work of the Groupe Mu, Gerard Genette and Roland Barthes) enables, on the one hand, a lexical analysis of the vocabulary of the extreme (such as "toujours", "rien", "pas un", etc.), and on the other, through the character analysis of Elisabeth Rolland, heroine of Kamouraska, renders the repeated use of the oxymoron meaningful.
Finally, the adoption of a holistic viewpoint highlights an evolution in her style. Given the possible juxtapositions inherent in a Manichean universe (opposition in her earliest and latest works, union in her three novels from the 1970s), two different worldviews are revealed which correspond, for the author, to two stylistic modes.

Full textResume : water, a biographic feature before being a symbolic one, will help anne hebert express her poetic and personal quest, through the mysterious link which binds it to the author. The superficial exploration of various liquid expanses and the survey of water metamorphoses in les songes en equilibre enable the poetess to analyze herself. Eager to proceed with her intimate enquiry. Influenced and transformed the watery chasm which symbolizes her unconscious. Influenced and transformed by her stay deep in the mute and icy waters of le tombeau des rois, she will later turn her novelistic and dramatic characters into the emblematic figure of the liquid abyss. But the call of life prevails : the poetess-cum-novelist and some of her characters emerge from the depths to fuse with the concrete world lit by a soft fluid light. The alliance of water and fire opens their hearts to self-sacrifice, generosity and communication

Full textAbstract : This M.A. thesis focuses on the two translations of Anne Hébert’s novel Kamouraska into Romanian. Published in Romania in 1986, the first translation was done from the English version that Norman Shapiro proposed in 1973. The second translation, this time done directly from the original French version, was published in 2008. We aim at introducing the political context in which the first translation of Kamouraska was made, more specifically under the Communist regime. We then proceed to present the editorial context of these two translations as well as some of the paratextual elements: covers, back covers, prefaces, etc. A survey of Anne Hébert’s main stylistic features in writing Kamouraska is followed by a comparative analysis of significant excerpts from the novel for the first and the second translation. Afterwards we introduce our French version of the two prefaces to the translations of Kamouraska: the first is signed by Irina Bădescu, and the second by Cătălin Sturza. The French translation of these two introductions enriches the critical understanding that is done of that novel everywhere in the world.

Full textWe will demonstrate that the evolution in the male characters' position in relation to the female characters and to space is realized simultaneously. When a significant change occurs in the male-female relation, it is accompanied by a similar change in the relation of the male characters to physical and psychological space. Starting from a doubly conflictual position (with relation to the female characters and to physical and psychological space), the male characters evolve, on both counts, towards what we call a harmonious state. This evolution is not, of course, linear; the male characters sometimes seem to hesitate. But still, we cannot deny that they progress, from one novel to the other, towards freedom.

The aim of this study is to examine feminist traits in the Brazilian translation of the following works of Quebec writer Anne Hébert (1916-2000): Kamouraska (1970), Les fous de Bassan (1982) and La cage (1990). The original texts and their respective translations by Leonidas Gontijo de Carvalho (A mascara da Inocência – 1972), Vera de Azambuja Harvey (Os gansos selvagens de Bassan – 1986), Nubia Hanciau (A gaiola de ferro – 2003) are analyzed from a comparative perspective. A textual and contextual reading of the translation is proposed based upon the premise of Antoine Berman (1995) that translating is not the same as transferring meanings. In this sense, translation is considered as reading, interpretation, rewriting and creation, according to the theorists: Lefevere (2007), Simon (1994) and von Flotow (1997). This analytical perspective considers both critical texts of Hebertian work and theorists of translation studies − especially those of feminist trait and from gender studies, such as Rita Felski (1989), Sherry Simon (1996), Suzanne Lotbinière-Harwood (1991), France Theoret (1987). Face to these multiple points of view, we seek to demonstrate if the lucid, strong, full of vitality and sometimes unscrupulous Hebertian woman is represented as such in the Brazilian translations. In addition, we focus on those characters, it must be said rare, that are not able to express their dissatisfaction before the patriarchal oppression to which they are subjugated. To do so, the position that Anne Hébert holds within reflections on écriture au féminin in the Canadian context is discussed in the first chapter. We believe that such discussion leads inevitably to the so called feminist translation and to the role Hébert played in the introduction of this new practice of translation. In the following chapters, we bring our attention to the works that make up the corpus of this thesis. We have devoted a chapter for each one of the books in which fragments of the original texts and their translations into Portuguese are confronted. Such approach takes into account a diversity of themes that allow the analysis of feminist traits according to the translation modalities of Francis Aubert (1998). Therefore, in Kamouraska we explore the representation of motherhood and the presence of sexuality and violence, especially considering the texts of Lori Saint-Martin (1999) and Elisabeth Grosz (2000). In Les fous de Bassan different types of resistance against the patriarchal powers are identified in female characters in accordance to the thinking developed by Michel Foucault (1979) regarding power and resistance. Finally, in La cage, we analyze the feminist reading of the story of Corriveau, popular in Quebec, taking into account the contributions of Michel Pêcheux (1999), Levi-Strauss (1967) and Maurice Halbwachs (2006), with respect to issues related to myth and memory. For the feminist issues, on the other hand, we recur to Luce Irigaray (1981) and Simone de Beauvoir (2003), among others.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the study of dreams and recollection of dreams in Anne Hébert's novels, an important Quebecois writer. The aims of this paper are to identify a dream pattern following the importance of the oneiric phenomenon as presented in the corpus and to analyze the particularities of dream transposition into the discourse and their purpose, in order to prove the existence of a Herbertian oneiric discourse framed by the Romanesque discourse.A narrative study of the content, the narrative instance, the narrative tense and the structure of the recollection of dreams in Anne Hébert novels underlie this research and lead up to various results. Thus, the dream as manner of supernatural revelation, the premonitory dream, the dream as a way of exile, the recalling dream, the dream as a reflection of reality and imagination are all experiences that place the Hebertian character between the two of them, causing breaches into his perception of wakefulness. The Romanesque discourse shows these scissions by a wide fragmentation and through the complex relations with the oneiric discourse within the content, the narrative instance, the narrative tense and oneiric structure

Full textSince the mid-1990s, a national program has been in place in order to renovate migrant workers' hostels (known as foyers), which were built in France mainly in the 1970s. Having been renovated, these hostels are used as “social residences”, a kind of supported and temporary accommodation for “vulnerable groups”. This transformation from hostels for migrant workers to social residences has distracted from the original purpose of providing accommodation to post-colonial immigrants by opening up these residences to non-immigrants as well. What constitutes these transformations and what do they signify? What do they tell us about policies towards migrant workers and ethnic communities in France? In order to address these questions, we have focused our research on a social landlord historically specialized in managing “Black Africans' hostels”: Aftam. The analysis draws from three types of qualitative approach : first, we have analysed the framework of national public policy using official documents and semi-structured interviews with key actors; second, we have investigated Aftam's archives in order to throw new light as the origin and history of this organization and its “Black Africans' hostels”; third, we have conducted ethnographic observation of the renovation project in four different hostels managed by Aftam, focusing on observing the interaction between migrants, representatives from Aftam and representatives from local authorities. This thesis demonstrates that community life, cultural practices and informal economic activities existing in Black Africans' hostels, which are condemned by many national institutions today, have developed through a long-term process, as a consequence both of the migrants living in the hostels and the landlord (Aftam) encouraging them to do so. Moreover, the implementation of renovation projects in Aftam's hostels emphasizes the contradictions of national public policy and also the hesitations of Aftam to address the demands of the communities in question, particularly concerning their cultural and religious practices. The actors involved in the transformation of migrant workers' hostels are from between the contrasting ideologies of multiculturalism and universalism. Nevertheless, the implementation of this policy by Aftam appears more pragmatic than ideological and the collective action of the migrant residents creates a power struggle with the institutions. Ultimately, this has led to a form of tolerance, rather than a total ignorance or absolute recognition of cultural, religious and ethnic minority practices

Full textThe thesis presents compared analyses of the personages of Duras and of Anne Hebert. The literary compared analysis is based on the fiction itself. The behaviors of the personages, their decisions, their choices, their psychological procedures in relation to the love, the death, and the research of the identity are at the center of this work. The principal literary works, read and analyzed are: The lover, The summer rain, Agatha, Savannah Bay, The Disease of the death, The rapture of Lol V. Stein, of Duras, as well as Aurelien, Clara, Miss and English Lieutenant, The children of the Sabbath, The wood rooms, The first garden, Anne Hebert’s Kamouraska. This thesis united the voices of two writers, two women of letters, and the creation of which ones are situated in the twentieth century. A scriptural creation who behaves in itself their spiritual itinerary, their real crossing of the oceans and borders, /between Canada, Quebec and France for Anne Hebert, and between Indochina and France for Duras/, as well as crossings deeper, more intimate and more human

Full textWriting incest (critic). Studying incest literature in Les Enfants du sabbat by Anne Hebert. Taboo that needs to be shut of. But can not be because of the enchanting attraction of transgression; incest is shown and is said, it uncovers itself like a souvenir which repeats, here again, itself, hides behind lust, mysticism, whereas the voluptuous relationship is disembodied. This art of expression of disappearance which is found at each level in the text (tense used in the narration, characters, space) loans also to incest its defence mechanism and censorship as the symbolical exclusion, identification to the aggressor, and the will to succeed which is initialized by the confession of the victim denounciating the crime against human nature.

Full textThe main purpose of this thesis is to study the care for the homeless immigrant families, within or outside the social emergency accommodation devices in Paris. This research meets several objectives. In the first place, it proposes an objective analysis of the homeless immigrant families in Paris, on the basis of quantitative surveys and interviews with the families. This thesis enlightens the process of social disqualification that the families are confronted with. In fact, the immigrant families do not have the same resources compared to other homeless families. They follow different trajectories regarding both their habitus formed in their countries of origin and the way that they are treated by the institutions. In the particular case of families labelled as the ‘Roma’, the living conditions of these families and their strong ethno-racial stigmatisation, decrease considerably their chances of obtaining a shelter to avoid being out streets. The difficulty of finding a shelter is strongly shaped and differentiated by the institutional context. In the second place, this research analyses the evolution of social policies towards the homeless populations, in particular concerning the immigrant families. The segmentation of accommodation devices falls within the poverty reduction policies, which have been wavering for a long time between social aid and repression. The chronic embolism of accommodation facilities undermines the principle of unconditional access to shelter and prevents its application. Due to the lack of accommodation places, the logic of selection and prioritization of families is based on an evaluation of vulnerability through which the cultural stigma has a negative effect in the sheltering process. Finally, this study analyses the social relations and tensions around the sheltering of these populations qualified as vulnerable. Considered as social actors, homeless families try to manage with the skills they acquired through their trajectories. In other words, the margin of the autonomy of the immigrant families facing the absence of accommodation and their ways of negotiation with the institutions depend partly on the economic, social and cultural capitals that they dispose, and on the time, they spent in their survival career. Between willingness for insertion and renouncement, in particular the ‘Roma’ families do not adhere to the accommodation devices in the same way

Full textThe purpose of this study is to describe the homeless experience of school-aged children. The theoretical framework for the study was Lazarus’ and Folkman’s (1984) stress and coping processes. In this study the focus was on a child perception of the situation, the stressors they identify and the coping strategies they use. The data was collected from 30 school-aged children living with their families at hotel, through comprehensive interviews and KidCope checklist. This study also brings knowledge about homeless families’ profile through the data collected from parents.Half of the children live in single parent families and two third have siblings. More than two third of children are born abroad, one third live as undocumented migrants and the most of families have no resources. The average family’s length of stay in France is 5,54 years and the average length of being sheltered is 3,24 years. The discourse of children is characterized by negative emotions, sometimes confusion, in face of lack of predictability in their life. The central place is accorded to school and family. School is often the unique place which provide a sense of stability and belonging, as well as social support. Family, through a support of loved ones, help child to cope with difficulties. For many of children, homelessness appears closely connected with migratory experience. Homeless experience is stressful for them: all children who participated in this research perceived at least one thing as stressful in their life. Beyond the stressors specific to school-aged children, the factors identified by the children involved in our research can be classified into one of three groups: stressors related to homelessness, stressors related to poverty and / or stressors related to migratory experience. Children use many different ways to cope with stressors. In general, they used more often approach coping and they rate it as more efficacious than avoidance coping
