Full textBased on the presupposition that humor is a phenomenon that is usually present in chronicles, this thesis aims at investigating the origins of such relation. Why are diverse readers, language and journalism students categorical when it comes to this association? Moreover, if humor is a remarkable feature of the genre, how are the strategies that enable it characterized? In order to answer these inquiries, we present the trajectory of the humorous phenomena in chronicles prior and subsequent to the arrival of the Press in Brazil. Besides, we have worked with the semiolinguistic theory of the discourse with a corpus taken from O Globo a Brazilian newspaper. The corpus stems specifically from the communication contract and the modes of discursive-textual organization. Our main aim, in summary, is to investigate to what extent various discoursive procedures can explain the operation of humor in contemporary journalistic chronicles, contributing to their becoming of an icon of seduction in the different sections of newspapers, which eventually lead them to turn into entertainment columns

Full textOppression is easily recognized. That is, at least, when oppression results from overt, consciously professed racism, for example, in which violence, explicit exclusion from economic opportunities, denial of adequate legal access, and open discrimination perpetuate the subjugation of a group of people. There are relatively clear legal remedies to such oppression. But this is not the case with covert oppression where the psychological harms and resulting legal and economic exclusion are every bit as real, but caused by concealed mechanisms subtly and systematically employed. In many cases, those with power and privilege use cultural stereotypes in order to sustain an unjust status quo. This is so even if the biases are implicit, automatic, and contrary to the consciously professed beliefs of the stereotyper. Furthermore, since many of these biases are not consciously reasoned into one's system of beliefs, and since they are notoriously difficult to bring to consciousness and dislodge via direct, logical confrontation, some other creative means of resistance is needed.
I argue that an indirect and imaginative route through subversive humor offers a means to raise consciousness about covert oppression and the mechanisms underlying it, reveal the errors of those with power who complacently sustain systematic oppression, and even open those people up to changing their minds. Subversive humor confronts serious matters, but in a playful manner that fosters creative and critical thinking, and cultivates a desire and skill for recognizing incongruities between our professed ideals and a reality that does not meet those standards. Successful subversive wits create fictional scenarios that highlight such moral incongruities, but, like philosophical thought experiments, they reveal a moral truth that also holds in the real world. Such humor offers opportunities for "border crossing" where the audience is encouraged to see from the perspectives of marginalized people who, because they inhabit ambiguous spaces in between the dominant and subordinate spheres, are in an epistemically privileged position with respect to matters of oppression. Subversive humorists open their audiences to the lived experiences of others, uncover the absurdities of otherwise covert oppression, and appeal to our desire to be truthful and just.

Full textThe work outlines first the process by which Aristotle laid the foundations for logic which has become the standard for correct reasoning, as well as the shortcuts which he took and has made logic virtually useless for the study of arguments as they occur in informal arguments. Then the work establishes new concepts on which actual reasoning and argumentation are based and introduces what is labeled as reasoning square, a structure on which any form of discourse can be analyzed. In order to prove the validity of the new theory, it is applied to various forms of discourse or literary devices, then to the book of Ecclesiastes, one of the most confusing books in the Bible for which no satisfactory explanation and interpretation has been offered before. And finally, the new theory is applied to analyzing scholarly works from the point of view of how consistent they are in what they say as well as their relation to the text whose meaning they claim to accurately expose

This work discusses the use of humor in psychotherapy. Humor is one of the primary phenomena of human life. It integrates the activities and life forms of different cultures and societies, in such a way that its emergence in the context of psychotherapy should be expected. Therefore, it’s important for the psychotherapist to understand how humor phenomenon is related to the particularities of the psychotherapeutic context, and how it can be utilized to enhance healthy processes within the relationships of the individuals involved. In this theoretical study we pinpoint and discuss the main processes and experiential qualities of humor, as well as reflect over its relationship with the main goals, means, processes and conditions of psychotherapy, pointing the clowning arts as a potential tool in the development of the therapist’s comic ability and sensibility. Our understanding is that a humorous exchange act like a phármakon – i.e. can enhance processes of healing or sickening, depending upon its use –, whereas the sense of humor – as in a more general way of relating to the world – is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Exercises and practices can help the therapist not only to develop his/her ability to create humor in psychotherapy, but also to cultivate his/her sense of humor. Therefore, we advocate the importance of integrating humor into the psychotherapeutic paradigm, motivating its study and practice in the academic and professional environment.

Full textThe purpose of our thesis is to investigate whether humor appears in cosmetic commercials on YouTube. If humor is implemented we would want to analyse which humor type it is. We also want to investigate which storytelling technique is used and what type of advertising message is applied. Furthermore, we intend to investigate whether humor is appropriate in commercials for cosmetics from the consumer's perspective in Sweden. In order to investigate this, a visual content analysis is used to help us see how the cosmetic commercials are constructed. A survey is created to get a picture of how the consumer perceives cosmetic commercials. The respondents are asked about their opinion on general perception about humor in cosmetics advertising and their opinion on commercials that are shown in the survey. The study shows that humor is not used to any great extent in the cosmetic commercials that are studied. Most of the commercials use the same advertising message and storytelling technique. In the few cases where humor occurres, only three types of humor are used of the seven included in the study. The respondents appreciate commercials with humor as they are seen more positive and personal.

Full textHumour is a useful copingmechanism and a valuable resource in nursing care, which unfortunately not is enough lightened up, neither in nursing school nor in different healthcare establishment. The aim of this study is therefore to describe the impact of humour, as a copingmechanism, on registered nurses and/or patients in different situations in nursing care. The method is a study of literature that in that has been inspired by the model of Goodman. The sample consists of 10 scientific articles, which has been examined and analysed in accordance to scientific criteria. The result is divided into two themes: The impact of humour, as a copingmechanism, on registered nurses and The impact of humour, as a copingmechanism, on patients. Under the themes, there are categories that demonstrate that humour is an important copingmechanism to both registered nurses and to patients. Registered nurses can use humour as a help to ease things up in difficult situations and in job related stress, to bridge conflicts and to create understanding. Humour can make patients forget the painful and hard for a while, and help them accept their diagnosis and the situation. The use of humour is, to a lot of patients, an important copingstrategy, to survive and to have strength to carry on with treatments and life if self. Humour is also significant in the interaction between registered nurses and patients, as it creates contact and a special bond of solidarity. The conclusion is that humour is a valuable and effective copingmechanism, which can be/should be used by both registered nurses and patients, as a copingstrategy in different situations in nursing care.

Full textBackground: Humor is a phenomenon that through history has had varying de-grees of importance to humans. In healthcare, the knowledge of humor has in-creased in recent decades and has been highlighted as a social tool for communi-cation and relationships between nurses and patients. Home health care is a form of care where there is a close contact between nurses and patients and where the humor therefore is important to notice. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' experience of conditions for humor and the importance of hu-mor when encountering patients in home health care. Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative empirical study with data collection through semistruc-tured interviews. A total of eight nurses with a basic nursing degree participated in the study, all working in home health care in southern Sweden. The collected ma-terial was analyzed using a latent content analysis by Burnard (1991), which was modified by the authors. Results: The basics of using humor lies in the ability to interpret signals and read the situation. Continuity in terms of time and the inter-actions that form each situation are also of importance to the humor. The humor in the encounter also seems to support the communication and relationship as well as even out differences and contribute to a more human encounter. Humor gives the feeling of doing something good and gives work satisfaction. It also seems to give the patient a feeling of joy in life. Conclusion: Humor has an impact on the en-counter and may be an important tool to ease the nurse's work in home health care. With this study the authors wish to highlight humor and increase the aware-ness of its effects in health care in general.
