Abstract:
Low-mass binary millisecond pulsars are born with very small orbital eccentricities, typically of order ei ∼ 10−6−10−3. In globular clusters, however, higher eccentricities ef ≫ ei can be induced by dynamical interactions with passing stars. Using both analytical perturbation calculations and numerical integrations, we have shown (Heggie & Rasio 1996) that the cross section for this process is much larger than previously estimated. This is because, even for initially circular binaries, the induced eccentricity ef for an encounter with pericentre separation rp beyond a few times the binary

AbstractWe answer some questions which arise from a recent paper of Campbell, Heggie, Robertson and Thomas on one-relator free products of two cyclic groups. In the process we show how publicly accessible computer programs can be used to help answer questions about finite group presentations.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, a very considerable amount of effort in stellar dynamics has gone into the study of interactions between binary systems and other stars. The asymptotic analytic results obtained by Heggie (1975) for binary-single star encounters have been largely confirmed and extended by later numerical experiments (Hills 1975, Hut and Bahcall 1983). Binary-binary interactions have been studied by Mikkola (1983).

Abstract:
The last three years have been very productive for cluster research. This report, on activities in the field, has been compiled by the members of Commission 37. It begins with sections on recent meetings, and on data catalogs (G. Lynga). Detailed tables of work on associations (P.E. Nissen), open clusters (G.L.H. Harris) and globular clusters (R.E. White) are then given. A section on cluster dynamics (D.C. Heggie) follows, and the final section concerns present trends in cluster research (C. Pilachowski).
